Jocelyn almost fainted when Caden walked into the jewelry store, looking more gorgeous than when he had left. But it was obvious that he didn't recognize her. She just stood there behind the counter with her mouth open, feeling like a complete idiot.

"I'm so sorry to bother you, but I'd like to buy a ring." Caden waited. When she didn't move, he pointed toward the front door. "This is still a jewelry store, isn't it?"

"Yes, of course." Jocelyn suddenly found her voice again. Now, if her heart would just restart-.

He took a step toward the door, obviously questioning her sanity. "I can come back, if now isn't a good time."

"No, no-." Jocelyn motioned him toward the counter. "Please, come in. What can I do for you?" She decided to wait to tell him who she was. She was secretly curious how long it would take him to recognize her, if he even recognized her at all.

Caden slowly approached the counter and then became engrossed in the rings. "I was wanting to by an engagement ring."

Jocelyn's heart sank. "Well-." Her voice croaked. "We have a good selection over here." She walked down the length of the glass case and stopped in front of the sparkling assortment. "If you see anything you like, let me know and I'll take them out so you can get a closer look."

He smiled, never taking his eyes from the rings. "I'd like to see that one-." Caden pointed to a set of rings. "- and this one-." He continued pointing and asking to see rings, until he came to The Christmas Ring. "- and that one."

Jocelyn's head snapped up and she looked directly into his beautiful blue eyes. "That ring?"

Caden nodded slowly, as if she wouldn't understand him. "Yes, that ring. And if you don't mind, I'm in a bit of a hurry." Then he looked at her as if seeing her for the first time and narrowed his eyes. "Don't I know you?"

One corner of her lips curled into a smile. "You don't recognize me?"

"No. Should I?" A crease formed between his eyes as he studied her.

Jocelyn tried to keep from smiling. On one hand, she was disappointed that he didn't recognize her. But on the other hand, she was having too much fun. A sly grin spread across her face. "Are you sure?"

He cocked his head to the side, a grin curling his lips as he really looked at her this time.

"You don't remember this scar?"

She pointed to a fine scar on her hand that she had received when they were ice skating on the lake behind their house one winter. Mallory was at a photoshoot and Caden had asked Jocelyn if she wanted to go skating. While they were out on the lake, she went out past the safety zone and had fallen on the ice. She would have gone through, if Caden hadn't pulled her back to safety. Despite her protests, he had carried her back to the house. The only injury she had sustained was a cut on her hand.

Caden's eyes opened wide and he took a step back. "Jocelyn? Is that really you?"

She burst out laughing. "Caden!"

"Come over here and give me a hug!" Caden motioned for her over the counter.

Instead, she walked around the counter and let him pull her in for a hug, and then leaned back. "So, when did you get into town?"

"Just now." He held her at arm's length, looking her over. "Look at you! You're no longer the knobby-kneed little school girl, are you?"

Her eyes clouded with disappointment, and her smile faded. "No, I guess not." She shook it off and donned a smile. "So, what brings you in here?"

"I wanted to get a ring first before I came over."

Jocelyn's heart skipped a beat. Although she knew there was no way the ring was for her, she couldn't help but let it affect her. "Why?"

Caden let out a deep breath. "Well, I want it to be a surprise."

Jocelyn nodded. "I won't tell anyone."

"Really?" He raised an eyebrow in disbelief.

"Yes, of course." She chuckled nervously, unable to breathe. That was just her luck. The man of her dreams finally comes back into her life again, only to be getting engaged.

Caden leaned closer. "Well- it's for Mallory."

Jocelyn stepped back, unable to believe what she was hearing. "What? You haven't even seen her in like- what- eight years?" She didn't tell him that she had been counting the years--and the days--since he left. But then again, Caden had always been Mallory's boyfriend and Jocelyn would never stand in their way- even after all these years.

Caden narrowed his eyes. "Yes, but I never forgot her."

"Of course you didn't," Jocelyn said flatly. She took a deep breath, forced a smile, and donned her best poker face. "Well then, I wish you both the best of luck."

Caden smiled. "You know if she says yes then you'll be my sister."

Jocelyn couldn't help but laugh. One thing about Caden was that he could always make her laugh. "Hearing you call me that brings back memories."

He looked down at her legs, causing her to blush. "So, you still skate on those skinny legs?"

Jocelyn's heart sank, but she didn't let on. Would he ever see her as a woman and not the knobby-kneed school girl she was when he left? But then again, she was happy for her sister. If he could work it out with Mallory after all these years, then more power to them.

"Yeah, at least that," she said flatly, walking back around the counter. "So, do you still want to look at rings?" She didn't want to be a naysayer and tell him that he should wait to pick out a ring until after he asked Mallory. But, on the other hand, it was common practice for the man to show the woman the ring when he asked. But he hadn't seen Mallory for years- She pushed the thought aside. Both Caden and Mallory never did things normally.

She and Caden spent the next hour looking at rings together. When customers came in, Kiki graciously helped them, allowing Jocelyn time with Caden. A few times, Kiki looked over and raised an eyebrow and then looked over at Caden when he wasn't looking. But Jocelyn shook her head, hoping beyond all hope that Caden hadn't seen. Finally, Caden narrowed his choices down between The Christmas Ring and another engagement ring. "I wish I knew what Mallory liked now-." Then he looked into her eyes. "You're her sister. Which one do you think she'd like?"Jocelyn's heart sank, but she plastered a smile on her face. She would give anything to be picking out a ring with Caden right now, but she guessed it just wasn't meant to be. Get a grip, she thought to herself. He's picking out a ring for your sister! She looked at the two rings, trying to be as objective as possible, and tears came to her eyes, threatening to spill over. Not only was Caden going to ask her sister to marry him, he could qui

Caden gave Jocelyn one last smile and then slowly pulled his Corvette away from the curb. She was no longer the kid he had left. Over the years, she had become a beautiful woman. But he quickly pushed the thought aside. He couldn't allow himself thoughts like that. If Mallory said yes, then Jocelyn would become his sister-in-law. She was definitely off limits. He took a deep breath to clear his mind and then headed over to Mallory and Jocelyn's old house. It would be strange not to have their father greet him at the door with his serious snarl. But of course, Caden had only been eighteen then and Mallory's father had always viewed him as a guy trying to steal his daughter's virtue. But it wasn't like that. Caden had always respected Mallory and had never tried anything with her, other than kissing. They had had plenty of make-out sessions while they were dating, but it had never gone any farther. Caden wanted to be married to her before they did anything more.As he drove through the

As he backed out the drive and onto the street, he guessed that the old saying was true that you couldn't go back home again. When he was younger, he was infatuated with her glamor and her flirtations. But now, she no longer had the same effect on him. He was no longer a boy and could see past beauty. And so far, he didn't like what he saw. Caden pushed on the gas, backed out of the driveway, and headed back toward town, wanting to see the sights before heading over to his parents' house. He was lucky that his parents were still alive and well. On one hand, it would be nice to live near them again, to help them out. But on the other hand, he wondered if he wanted to live in a town again that's main form of capitalism was Christmas. But now that he was here, he knew he could easily get used to it again. He drove back through the winter wonderland of ice and snow that covered everything, as if ordered specifically for the town, enjoying the festive feel. Somehow, Christmases away jus

Although Caden knew his father was proud of the choices he had made, his father was disappointed that he had spent so much time away from home. When he was young, his father used to drop hints of him taking over the family business. But with each visit, there were less hints, and his bitterness grew. "He's still disappointed that I didn't take over the family business, isn't he?" In June, the tree lot became a firework stand until the 4th of July. His parents were usually busy selling something throughout the year, including items they sold at the flea market in between.Emma sighed. "Don't worry about it. You're here to enjoy the holidays, not to discuss business." She turned and waved to her husband over her head and he waved back, frowning. Emma patted Caleb's arm and they started toward his car and stopped beside his Corvette. "Surely you don't expect me to get in that thing."Caleb chuckled. "Mom, it's not all that bad." He opened the passenger-side door. "Here. I'll help you."

"Now, don't stay out too late." Caden's mother warned later that night before he left for his date."Mom, I'm a grown man." He slipped into his black leather jacket. It was cold earlier and now he was sure it'd be freezing."I know that." She pointed to her cheek. "Now, come over here and give your mother a kiss before you go."He did as he was asked and then a sly smile spread across his face. Yes, he had a lot of his mother in him. "And I'll be sure to stay out very late."She looked at him, her eyebrows raised, and then burst out laughing and pushed against his chest. "Oh, you-.""Love you," he called out as he walked out the door."Love you more!" she called after him.He walked out onto the front porch and pulled the door closed tightly behind him. It had started snowing again, but was now just flurries. I asked you to wait for me and you broke up with me."She folded her arms across her chest, pushing out her lower lip. "Well, I wanted to go.""Mallory, you couldn't wait just eight weeks for me?" He pulled the car to a stop onto the side of the road, but kept the engine running. "Mallory, I asked you to marry me.""When?" Mallory's eyes flared. "Yeah, and then I'd be engaged to a man that wasn't here. Then I'd be the wife of a sailor and I would have lost my chance at making it in California.""Then why didn't you go?""I didn't want to go alone. Then after my parents died- I had my reasons." Mallory looked down, defeated. When she looked up, tears were in her eyes. "I thought you were going to take me away from all this. We had made plans to go to California together, and then you went and joined the Navy. Why?"He shrugged. "For one thing, I wanted to serve my country, just as my father had.

The next day, Jocelyn was glad that she was off from work as she folded her mother's afghan and placed it across the back of the couch. She hadn't had much time off lately and was secretly glad to have some time to herself to think. She didn't want to be at work and have Caden walk in the door again, clouding her mind."You've got to be kidding me, Frank! We can't do it another day? I have plans." Mallory asked into her phone and waited, listening. "I screwed up? I don't think so!" She listened again, her ear to the phone as she shook her head. "Okay, okay! I'll be down there in a minute." She clicked off her phone, ending the call. "Jocelyn? Would you do me a favor?"Jocelyn looked up. Uh oh. When Mallory asked for a favor, Jocelyn usually got the raw end of the deal. "What?" she asked flatly."Frank screwed up the shoot and I had plans to go skiing with Caden today." She pooched out her lip into a pout. "Would you mind going with Caden for me?""What?" Then she slid into his Corvette.Caden chuckled as he closed her door. A moment later, he slid into the driver's seat. "Where would you like to go? Cedar Ridge or Snowflake Mountain?"Jocelyn shrugged, her heart racing along with the engine. Since she had never skied before, she had no idea which one was the best. "It doesn't matter to me. Where would you like to go?"Caden threw the car into drive. "Snowflake Mountain was always a bit too kitschy to me. How about Cedar Ridge?" He raised an eyebrow as he looked over at her, completely unaware of the effect he had on her.

The fresh aroma of flowers wafted toward her as Kiki walked into the doorway of the ballroom in The North Pole Lodge. She wrung her silk-gloved hands as she looked around the room. All eyes were on her, but there was only one person she wanted to see. Then she looked over at a group of people and her heart stopped. For standing beside his coworker was Taren, looking dashing in a black tuxedo, white shirt, and black bowtie, his dark blond-streaked hair combed to perfection, looking as if he had stepped out of a fashion magazine or a fireman's calendar.Kiki's heart leapt when their eyes met, but his expression was unreadable as he crossed the room to her. Taren stopped in front of her, and she could smell the fresh scent of his cologne, his muscles bulging beneath his tux."Why are you here?" he asked, his eyes soft and kind.Of all the things she expected him to say, that wasn't it. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come." She turned to leave, but he caught her hand."No- please stay."

Taren stepped out of her reach and adjusted his tux. "What are you doing here?"Through the doors to the ballroom, Dylan, Patrick, Erica, and other firefighters watched, ready if he needed them. Although he appreciated their concern, he just wished they would stay out of it."You invited me." Scarlett pushed out her lower lip. But he was no longer a child, and her silly games no longer worked on him."No, I didn't." Taren shrugged out of her grasp and tried to walk past her, headed toward the ballroom, but she grabbed his arm and swung him around. "Scarlett, just leave. No one wants you here." He turned to walk away."I'll go to court for Abby!" she shouted behind him.Taren stopped and slowly turned around. He walked toward her and stopped just inches from her. "Never threaten me with my daughter again."Scarlett smirked as she folded her arms across her chest. "Besides, my lawyer says we have a good chance of winning the case.""Oh yeah, Scarlett? What lawyer?" He waited for a

Later that night, Taren looked into the full-length mirror in his room, adjusting his bowtie once again. Then he smoothed a hand over his tux and pulled the vest down into place. Although he had given her a ticket, his heart sank, knowing that Kiki probably wouldn't be there. After brushing his hair into place, he laid the brush down onto the counter."Well, I guess this is as good as it's going to get."If it wasn't for the fact that he was obligated to go because it was his turn to host, he wouldn't be going. He just hoped that Scarlett wouldn't make too big of a scene. Although his friends and coworkers knew what kind of person she was, he still didn't want her to embarrass him in front of them. He sighed, knowing it was inevitable. But this time, he wasn't going to let her hold his daughter over his head to get what she wanted."Daddy!" Abby ran to him when he walked into the living room and he scooped her into his arms. "You look nice! Are you going to see Kiki?"Pain gripped

"What do you want from me, Joce? I screwed up and I don't know what to do about it! I jumped to conclusions when I saw Taren with Scarlett, and I hurt him. You should have seen the look on his face." "Want to go sled riding?"He gave her a smile. Abby was the one thing that he and Scarlett had done right, and he was grateful for every second he had with her."We will in a little while. After Scarlett left, he had to grow up fast. Forced to become both father and mother overnight made him grow up quickly of necessity. He was just lucky that his mother had helped him. She had just found her mother's jewelry box and her father's rifles in the glass case that was still locked up, so she didn't pay attention to who it was."You know you really shouldn't be here alone."Kiki's heart sank. She would know that voice anywhere. She flipped around and she was right. Taren was standing just behind her in all his golden good looks, raising an eyebrow as he looked at her. "Well, I just got off work and I thought I'd come over and see what I could salvage."Taren nodded and then pointed to the gun case with the rifles, now laying on its side. "Do you have a key for that?""Yes, of course." She fumbled with her keychain until she found the right one. But her hands were shaking so badly that it was hard for her to manage. On the way back to the station, Taren had texted Kiki over and again, but she hadn't returned his texts. It was just as well. Taren shrugged, knowing it was better if she left now instead of waiting until he--and Abby--were in too deep."What's wrong?" Dylan asked, taking his time driving back to the fire station after the call."Oh, it's Kiki," Taren replied. "She won't return any of my texts."He shrugged. "Maybe she's just busy."Taren raised an eyebrow. "All day?""Hey! Carrie gets busy with the kids sometimes and doesn't even hear the phone ring, let alone text me back. Stop being such a girl and call her." Over the years, Dylan had become Taren's best friend on the fire department.Taren clicked his phone off. "Not right now." He looked out the window, watching as the scenery passed by in the dark. "I don't know, Dylan.
