Jacob wasn't always like this.

I met him at a dinner party. At the time, he was the prince of Kingsbury's high society whom everyone was eager to please. I, on the other hand, was constantly looked down on for being a daughter of a nouveau riche family.

The heirs and heiresses who ran the upper-crust society had known each other for a while. They had formed cliques that thrived on sidelining those who were below their leagues, which made me the target of their cruel remarks and denigration.

"I was wondering who she was. I can't believe she has the face to show up at a party like this, considering her family's nouveau riche. You agree with me, don't you, Jacob?"

Jacob had only frowned at the question being thrown his way. He turned his handsome face to the crowd and fixed them with an irritated look. "Go find something to do if you're bored. You're annoying me with all the noise you're making," he chastised the sycophants.

The crowd dispersed after that, and Jacob spun to look at me. He snorted. "At least you're pretty, for whatever that's worth."

I slowly tossed away the brick I had been secretly holding behind my back. If Jacob hadn't stepped in earlier and dismissed the crowd, the scion who had insulted me earlier would have had his skull cracked.

I returned the cold, assessing look Jacob gave me and drawled with matching sarcasm, "And you're just plain stupid."

I never expected my casual retort to pique his interest in me. In his words, no one had ever dared call him stupid to his face before, and he was determined to make me sorry for it.

When I heard his reason, I merely snorted and said, "Did he ever think no one said it to his face because they've only been calling him stupid behind his back?"

Unfortunately, my witty argument wound up in Jacob's ears, and he was furious. He then told his group of sycophantic lackeys that he would make me get on my knees and apologize to him in front of the school gates one way or another.

As I rode past him on my bicycle, I grabbed a handful of mud and hurled it at his tailor-made shirt. In less than a second, he had gone from prince to pauper. As his lackeys struggled to hold in their laughter, I zipped into the distance on my trusty bicycle.

I thought Jacob and I would stay enemies forever, but the next day, he saved me from being run down by a speeding van. I had come so close to being run over and killed outright, but thanks to Jacob, I was panting in his arms instead.

I didn't even notice my back was pressed against his torso, not even as I felt his heat through the thin material of his blouse. When I turned to thank him, my mind still a blur, he simply smiled.

That was the first time I saw him smile like that. He looked open and gentle. "If you truly wish to thank me, be my girlfriend."

My heart was racing wildly, though I reckoned it was because of my brush with death. Even so, I knew I could not agree with Jacob's proposition.

To say nothing of whether he was only asking me to be his girlfriend for the fun of it, our families were too different. That alone was enough to take a toll on us if we ever got together.

I tightened my grip on my backpack and deliberately put some distance between us. "I'd rather apologize to you on my knees outside the school gates," I said.

I never got around to doing that. As it turned out, it wasn't an accident that the van had nearly run me down; it was all part of a plan to kidnap me and ask my parents for a ransom.

I calmly explained to the kidnappers, "My dad remarried, and I bet he and my stepmom would love for you to kill me. They would never pay the ransom." Unfortunately, the kidnappers did not believe me. Instead, they fished out their daggers and drew closer to me.

At that moment, a figure came darting out of nowhere. It was Jacob. He stood before me, shielding me as he ground out over his shoulder, "Run and get the cops!"

I was in no position or mood to throw out simpering lines like "I'm not leaving you behind!", so I ran faster than I ever did in this lifetime to the nearest telephone booth.

I called the cops, but by the time they got to the scene, the hilt of a dagger was protruding from Jacob's lower abdomen, and he had already blacked out for some time.

After that, I became Jacob's girlfriend.Seven years passed before we finally got engaged. During the seven years, Jacob hadn't so much as glanced at another woman. He even turned over a new leaf for my sake, no longer the haughty prince who put having fun above all else.He grew into a mature, sensible, and responsible scion of the Gardner family. He learned the ropes and prepared himself for the duties of the head of the family. Even his parents stopped picking on me after a while after seeing how much Jacob had changed for the better.I, on the other hand, had mellowed down considerably since dating Jacob.I gave up on my college major for the Gardner family. I looked after Jacob and learned the ways and unwritten rules of Kingsbury's high society. I also worked hard to get along with the Gardners, and now, I was on their good side.My dad had also gained the respect of the other businessmen in the industry thanks to my relationship with Jacob and, by extension, his family.Ja

Ivana's words had played their part. I was left reeling after hearing them, and any fighting spirit I had to continue debating or reasoning with Jacob was lost. All I wanted was to stay as far away from him as possible.I returned to the marital home Jacob had lovingly decorated and packed up my stuff to leave. If I had any hope that Jacob might turn around before, I was left only with disgust for him now. However, I paused when I grabbed the stuffed bear on the table. The bear had been a gift from Jacob after one of our fights.I had told him how, back when our family was poor, I came across a stuffed bear just like this one while I was in town. I remembered standing outside the shop window for over an hour, staring at the bear like I had been entranced. But that was years ago, and it was impossible to find the same stuffed bear after that much time had passed.Jacob drove through the night and wound up in that secluded little town, only to find that the shop from my memory had

"Well, if it isn't Ariel! Are you here to celebrate Jake's birthday, too? No wonder he told the staff to switch the mango cake to something else. Guess he didn't want your allergies to flare up."Eric continued mockingly, "I think you should stop holding a grudge against Ivana and go back to Jake like a good little wife. He and Ivana are like brother and sister, you hear me? They're tight. Why waste your time—"Before he could finish speaking, I grabbed a bottle of wine and smashed it over his head. Red wine and blood dribbled down his forehead, and he let out an earth-shattering scream as he reached up to wipe them off."How dare you do this to me after the sage advice I gave you, Ariel? If you must know, Ivana is slated to become Mrs. Gardner soon, and you'll still be a nobody!" Eric shrieked.I'd had too much to drink earlier. Coupled with my sudden outburst, I could feel my stomach churning painfully. Before long, beads of cold sweat broke out over my forehead, but that did not

After the incident with Eric, I got several calls from Jacob, which was new. I ignored the calls, but it seemed the man had a proclivity for masochism. The more I ignored him, the more it spurred him on.It was just like our first meeting. Jacob hadn't shown that much interest in me until he realized I wasn't afraid to talk back, and after that, he started pursuing me.In short, Jacob was simply interested in things he hadn't been exposed to before.I returned to the company and sorted out the work I had set aside for the last couple of days. The documents on my desk had piled up thanks to my recent debacle with Jacob. The clock struck five by the time I went through all the documents. I grabbed my phone, only to be taken aback by the dozens of missed calls from Jacob. In the past, I would never have ignored his calls or texts no matter how busy I was. I would have made time to respond to them. After a long beat, I finally deigned to return Jacob's call. He picked up at the first

The last dredges of hope I'd had vanished when I saw how everyone in the room was siding against me. A humorless smile curled my lips as I said, "In that case, perhaps you should have someone cut out for the role to be your daughter-in-law."Jacob's mom frowned at my words but did not object.Jacob gave me a long, hard look as he snapped, "Don't be ridiculous!" He heaved a sigh and poured two cups of tea. He slid the cups toward me and said tersely, "You will have tea with my parents, and we'll leave this incident behind us. We'll be a family from now on."I knew what he meant when he asked me to have tea with his parents. When we first started dating, he told me his parents were strict and old-fashioned. They made it mandatory for their son and future daughter-in-law to have tea with them before giving us their blessings. But Jacob had also promised me years ago that he wouldn't make me go through any humiliation and that he would persuade his parents to give up on the tradition o

Now that I had interfered, the client quickly diverted his attention toward me and my company. I immediately explained all the benefits he stood to gain, and before long, we signed an agreement. The client was anxious to get the deal signed and over with. He had a hard time choosing between working with me and working with Jacob. In the end, he chose me for my decisiveness. This was exactly what I wanted. I couldn't risk Jacob finding out what I had done. As things were, I wasn't powerful enough to take him and his family on just yet. However, something terrible happened when I least expected it.Perhaps the stress of the last couple of days had taken a toll on me, for the painful stomach churning happened again that night. Only it was different this time. No matter how many pills I took, the pain would not ease up.I broke into a cold sweat. When I returned to the company, I took the medication I had gotten from the hospital and hoped it would ease the pain in my stomach. After that, I buried myself in work once more.Thankfully, my dad didn't have much hope for the company when he signed over all the rights to me. Otherwise, the company wouldn't thrive as it did, and my dad wouldn't have been able to resist trying to get on my good side. But I was too naive. I should have known my dad, thick-skinned as he was, wouldn't stay away from me for too long.Days later, my secretary informed me that my dad was waiting in the downstairs lobby. I frowned but left to meet him anyway.Upon seeing me, Dad dropped the haughty and condescending demeanor he usually reserved for me and took my hand. He asked with false kindness, sounding as awkward as he looked, "Goodness, Ariel, you've lost so much weight.
