This place was as silent as a graveyard. The only things that could be heard were the sound of crickets, owls and bats. The air was a mixture of oxygen, the stench of cigarettes and alcohol. Coming to a place like this was very, very risky. But, I was pretty sure if I hadn't come here, dad would kill Gregory.

I parked my car in front of one of the old houses, hopped out. A bit fearful, I headed to my destination. I knew this was the only place dad would send his men to beat up anyone, so that was the reason I had decided to come here.

The alcohol content in the air seemed to be surpassing the oxygen. My lungs felt choked, begging me to leave here as soon as possible. Sometimes, I would wonder why the government didn't restrict people from coming here. Anyone could easily get murdered in such a place.

I ignored the offensive odour. Reaching the house I was heading to, just a few feets away, I heard groan

Renee______In thirty minutes, Roy would come here to pick me up. And like damn, I couldn't wait for him to get here. Every woman in love would understand what it meant to always want to have their man beside them. It was like taking a tour in the clouds.I kept my jaw in my palm as I propped my elbow on the counter. A small, warm smile crawled to my lips, and I shut my eyes, inhaled hard, enjoying the serenity around me.Yes, I was exhausted, but I didn't want it to be obvious. Roy had said I shouldn't work any longer, but of course, that wasn't going to be possible. Well, I kind of moved into his house. He had said I didn't have to worry about feeding or any other costs, but as a stubborn person I was, I wasn't willing to listen to him yet.For some reason, mom wasn't so comfortable with me having to stay at his place. I didn't know why, b

Renee______I squeezed my face, so confused. Roy was kind of crazy sometimes. How could he have ordered this much food? Just because I was pregnant, didn't mean I was now some kind of foodie. I was definitely still going to eat the same way I always ate.I scratched my head like I was confused. Oh, yeah, I was confused. Could he have ordered this for a guest? Was he expecting someone? And where the heck was he?I yawned. Last night, for some reason, I was unable to have enough sleep. As far as I knew, pregnant women always slept a lot, but that was completely different for me. I hardly slept very well. I guessed it was because I was kind of used to staying up late at night"Hey, princess?" I yelped when I heard his voice. With a little frown, I snapped my neck around. "Come on. You don't want me to have a heart att

Renee______I scrunched my nose, choking on my own fart. I heard Roy mumble from behind me, but I ignored him. It wasn't my fault. My tummy kind of hurt, so this fart was because of his child. Could he blame me?"Renee," he bed-muffled. "Come on. You could have excused yourself."I bit my lower lip, my eyes jerking open. Shit, this was so embarrassing. Farting in front of him? The crumpling sound behind me denoted he was crawling towards me. Embarrassed, I shut my eyes back. At least, he would think I farted from my sleep."Come here, you naughty thing." He pulled me from behind, dug his lips into the skin of my neck.I remained silent, still pretending to be asleep. But, when he locked the inch between us, I yelped."Go away." I attempted to push him off me, but that didn't work. He only pulle

Tears crinkled in my eyes. I didn't like this at all. Everyone had begun clapping when I had stretched my hand to collect the ring, but now, they were muttering several unnecessary words."Mom." Roy stood straight, hurried to the annoying person he called his mom. "Wh-What are you doing here? What's up?"She turned to him, those evil eyes shooting him some glare. "You're an idiot. Have you taken it this far?"He sighed. "Mom, I get you. This is no longer a game. It's for real now. We've sorted things out between us already.""Sorted what?" She scoffed. Moving her arms to her chest, she inhaled loud. "My boy, I still don't get why you'll choose her over Kath. I mean, Kath's complete. She's just the woman I want for you. She's successful, decent, respectful. She has it all. What the heck do you see in this one?"I swallowed. No matter how I tried to make her like me, the hatr

"Kath, I can explain." She turned around the couch, hurried to me, blinking like a moron."H-How can you…" I still couldn't believe what I had heard. Or, was she kind of playing a prank on me? "How can you do this?! You're nuts?!" My voice covered the entire room. She quivered, only moving unstably. "S-See, it's not what you think. I was only—""Only what?!" I hit my hand hard across her face. She tripped backwards, held her cheek, gasped. "What's your problem? Why would you want to take Roy as well? Are you that much of a harlot?"After a while of being silent, she turned back to me, gave me a hard frown. Obviously, she wasn't sorry. The frown on her filthy eyebrows was enough proof."First, you call me a harlot? And now, you hit me? Bitch, who gives you that right?" She uttered. Her voice always held that creepy dramatic tone, but right now, the e

The moment he moved his hand to my shirt, I gasped, but was too weak to release myself from his grip. He checked whether or not I was wearing the necklace, and when he got a confirmation I wasn't with it, he threw me from his strong hold.I fell to the floor, sat on it, and felt too weak to even breath. Before he had come here, I was so tired. Now that he was moving my body like I was a paper, I felt even more tired."Search the entire room," he ordered his men. Without wasting time, they began scattering the room, looking for something that wasn't even here.He walked past me, heading somewhere. What was I to do now? How would I make him believe it wasn't with me? I didn't want him to know it was with mom, because there was no doubt that he would hurt her if he had to know.I sighed weakly. Where was Roy? He was the only person who knew how to handle his father, so why the he

I sipped from the hot tea Karen had served me, sitting on the bed like a pitiful animal. I still felt so weak and sad. To worsen it all, Roy hadn't come home yet. Fine, I understood he was probably busy, but what was stopping him from giving me just one phone call?I rubbed my knuckles against my eyes, sniffed. I would admit, I was completely dreaded. I really didn't know how to get rid of Scott. It seemed like he was forever going to haunt me."Can I come in?" Karen peeped through the door, gave me a smile.Yes, I was still so puzzled that she was being this nice. When she had given me this tea, I had thought she must have poisoned it, but well, I was only being negative and weird. The tea was completely fine.I gave her a curt nod, dropped the tea on the bedside table, and leaned my back against the headboard of the bed.She ambled to me. Slowly, she sat

Particularly, I had told Roy to drop me at Mom's place because I wanted to speak with her. Also, I was scared of staying alone in that house. At this point, it was time I began to care about my security. Clearly, staying alone there wasn't so safe for me."When will Roy return?" Mom dropped the last plate of meatballs on the left side of the table, and balanced my meal with a glass of orange juice."Soon. And thanks for this delicious meal," I appreciated. Taking a meatball, I threw it into my mouth, sighed on tasting it, and fixed my gaze at her. "Ma, we've gotta talk." I spoke amid a mouthful of meatballs. She sat by the other side of the table. Since mom and I grew up alone, there were only two chairs on this small dining table. When Melissa and Lisa had been living with us, we had two extra seats on the table. But now they were gone, the table only had a seat for mom and me.

  • Chasing Her   Epilogue

Renee______My hands tugged against the guardrails of the bed I was laid on. This pain? I hadn't ever experienced such physical pain in my entire life. At this moment, I appreciated my mom more than ever before."Ah!" My voice didn't come from my vocal cord, it came all the way from my abdomen, went through my lungs, then escaped via my lips. This pain felt like death."It'll be fine." Roy caressed my hair, seeming so worried."Push!" The nurse cried."Lord, help me!" I screamed further, trying to catch my breath, weeping so hard. A loud high-pitched sound banged in my ears, my head felt heavy, my body was full of discomfort. He pecked my forehead. "A little more effort, okay? Just a few more pushes.""A little more force needed," the nurse announced.&nb

I held mom's hand tight, so worried. It had been up to an hour since she woke up, yet she wasn't saying anything to me. She only continued to weep hard, harder than I had ever seen. I had asked her a couple of questions, but got no reply."I can't believe this," she finally spoke.I shifted closer to her, cupped her hand tighter. "I don't get what's going on. Please, say something to me."She finally looked at me. "That's John. That's… your father."I gave her a neutral expression, not knowing what to say or do. My father? The man who had died since I was a baby? Wait, what? Was this a world of fantasy? How in the world did he wake up from the dead?"Mom, that's Pablo. Are you sure you aren't seeing things?" I bit my lower lip when I said that. She sighed. "I don't even know how to react to this. It feels so… unreal. I'm sure S

"Roy, come downstairs!" I cried, grumbling and frowning at myself. Goodness knew what he was doing up there. "Do you want your food to get cold? Don't make me come there and break your bones!""I'm coming, ma'am." He mumbled some things, as he walked down the stairs.Hot, he really was. He was in a sweatpant, a sweatshirt, and slippers. His hair was a bit wet and tousled, some of its strands slipping on his eyebrows. But, that didn't obstruct his beauty. As he took each step down, those arms moved back and forth as if he was bragging about his muscles. He squeezed his face a little, yawned in between. I could tell he still wanted to sleep, but couldn't do that because I had forced him to take a bath earlier than usual. Lazy dude. He didn't wanna go to work anymore."Gosh, why won't you let me sleep? What have I done to deserve this punishment?" He pecked my cheek from behind, and se

I turned back to Scott. His mouth and eyes were dropped. Mom's reply was what he wanted to hear, but that was probably not what he had expected her to say. She groaned from behind, which made me turn back to her. She was trying to get up. Yep, I ought to help her get up, but I was quite angry that she had agreed to give him the necklace."Mom?" I walked to her, and scoffed. "You wanna— what the heck?""Honey." She gasped for air, grumbling a bit as a result of how tired she seemed. "I can't risk your life. He's threatening us at gun point. We should just get rid of him for good. There's no need for you to worry, okay?""But, I can't…" I began to cry. I was so short of words. My mom would start a relationship with my boyfriend's dad? Absolutely ridiculous!"Honey, please—"Just when she was about to speak, the loud sound of… oh my goodness! Si

The thought that could poof into my head, was going on my knees and begging this irritating dude to spare us. Now, I understood why mom wanted us to leave the country as soon as possible. But, the irritating thing was, why the heck were we running away from a criminal? Criminals were the ones who ought to leave, not us!"Scott, at this point, you should know that this isn't possible. I've been guiding my late husband's possession since God-knows-when," Mom sputtered, glowering at him. "So, please, forget about the filthy necklace.""I. Won't." He spat out.She scorned at him. "Then let's see how you'll get it. In two hours, your twenty-five years bet will diminish. John will lose all the money to the betting company, while you'll get nothing!""I swear, I'll kill you." • Chasing Her   Forty Seven: Absolutely no one

Life was the same as boring. There was no Roy to stare at me whenever I woke up in the morning, there was no baby in my tummy to adore, there was no one to keep my company. Mom, who was the only available person around me, was facing a bit of depression.Ever since I had told her about how I had lost my pregnancy, she hadn't been doing fine at all. She had said she had already been knitting sweaters for her unborn grandchild, not knowing the innocent thing would be killed by some morons.Little by little, I was getting rid of the pain of losing the pregnancy, but not a bit had I gotten rid of my love for Roy. I guessed we had a really strong bond. To be frank, in the last one week, sometimes, I would think of speaking with him, but I didn't know how to. Probably, if he hadn't affirmed that this relationship was over, I could have tried to at least call or send a text to him. But, since he had said he didn't want it anymore, I gue

Being shocked was an understatement. Not for once had I thought I would ever get to see her again. When she had first gone to the hospital, I used to visit her, and sometimes, had prepared her favorite dishes. But, when the doctor had told Bella and I that she had been close to death, we had decided to stop going to the hospital in order to prevent ourselves from being too hurt."Virg!" I jumped from my seat, threw my body against hers, cuddling her crazily. She giggled, hugging me tight as well. "Missed you so much, honey.""Oh my goodness." Pulling away, I pecked her on the cheek. "I can't believe you're… alive."She shrugged. "Me too. I can't believe I'm alive."I poked her arm. "Gosh, you've made me so glad tonight. Wanna go somewhere and talk?""Sure." She nodded."Kk." After a moment of being glued to my tracks, I managed to drop the bottle of water and glass, on the bed. Doing that, I traipsed to her, my legs feeling like it would break soon.Immediately I stood in front of her, she put her eyes down. "I'm sorry. I know this might hurt you. As well, I'm hurt. It took me a while to make this decision, but I've made up my mind. And I know it'll be good for us both.""Are you crazy?" I huffed. I hadn't even known when those words had spilled from my mouth. "You want to leave me? In this ruckus?"She raised her head to me, tears in her eyes. "Please, understand this. Breaking up is what we need at this point. Many people don't want us to be together.""But, that's—""We lost our child!" She roared. The seriousness in her tone intensified, tears already trickling down her cheek.
