The starless night gleamed with city lights and his blazing eyes.
I shook from the trance when I looked at his bruised cheek. My hand involuntarily touched it making me hear a subtle wince."You're hurt. Let me help you", I whispered, holding his bleeding arm to take a look."I don't need your help. You shouldn't be here at this time", he said, jerking his arm away from me.I didn't know why, but something in me was determined to not let him walk away hurt."You are coming with me. I am sorry but you're extremely hurt. Let me help you,", I argued back with surprisingly a firm voice. He looked at me with clear amusement and frowned. His lips curled up into a smirk."Kitten, you have no idea whom you're dealing with. I suggest you fucking shut your pretty little mouth and go mind your own business," he replied, darkly. My lower lip shivered from the threat. Yet, I managed to put a straight face before speaking."I cannot let a hurt person walk away when I am more than capable of helping them.", I said with a serious look.I saw his eyes soften for a flash second and I considered it to be a hallucination. I took a minute to observe his features. His dark hair was messy like he had been doing an extreme activity. A deep scar etched on his eyebrow bone gave him an intimidating feature. He looked around as if someone were watching him."Two minutes and I am out.", he stated.I nodded my head and caught his sleeve to help him walk towards my place. My mind was clouded with questions about the condition of my house. I hoped that it wasn't messy as I opened the door with my guest trailing behind...."Stay still", I huffed as I carefully dabbed the spirit on his face.I was no expert in aiding people, however, I used my common sense and used the necessary items in the first aid kid. Aiden stayed silent all the time while his eyes never left me. I shifted uncomfortably under his piercing gaze."I have never seen you around", he said, breaking the silence.I, somehow expected this question to arise anytime soon. My mind flooded with all the memories back when I used to stay in Seattle. I have never talked about it to anyone and I plan to keep it that way." I just moved here a few months ago", I whispered, avoiding his gaze.He slightly nodded his head and hissed when the cotton ball of spirit made contact with his wound. I squeaked a quick apology and continued aiding his wounds."It's obvious you're new. Or you wouldn't even have talked me, Kitten", he said, dangerously. "Haven't you heard of me?"I looked at him,"Aiden Walters, I have been warned about you", I replied and shook my head.He suddenly stood up with a grim countenance and came closer, towering me, his eyes holding a stern expression." I don't understand if you are oblivious to everything or simply stupid. I am warning you, Haven. It is not pretty to involve in anything that includes me. Stay away.", he said, putting a strand of my hair behind my ear.I frowned at his words and saw him walk out of the door. He definitely had some issues. I inwardly shrugged and got ready for bed. Only to stay up for a while with obvious questions and a pair of hazel eyes lingering in my mind...I woke up with a heavy gasp. It was the third time I had a nightmare this week. When I realized that it was too late, I jumped off the bed to go to work.I graduated college with a business major and worked as a marketing coordinator. However, after moving here, I had to search for proper jobs and apply for them. In the meanwhile, I work as a waitress at a cafe closer to Blossombee. While entering the cafe, I quickly greeted James, my co-worker, and friend, with a bright smile. James had been working here for a few years. We instantly clicked during my first day of work. And I could state, without a doubt, that he is the only reason, I don't die of boredom or stress at work."Uh-huh. You missed Mr. Pineapple-crown head trying to hit on Cinnamon roll.", he said with a fake pout. These are our code words for the daily customers. We make our own screen time with the people around us with our storylines."Really? He made a move? But Cinnamon has a boyfriend", I gasped, while I fixed my hair."Guess he'll never know", he said, wiggling his eyebrows. I laughed and punched his arm.Time passes by quicker with James. He was a fun person to be with. And I think he was the only person who could make me laugh after what felt like eons.I texted Anna that I'd be meeting her while walking down the street to Blossombee."Haven! Hold on!"I turned around to see James half-sprinting towards me."Whoa, James. Is everything alright?", I asked, concerned. He took a few seconds, trying to catch his breath, and spoke"I don't have anything to do this evening. And I see you heading to Blossombee. Let's go and grab a coffee?", he asked, trying to catch his breath again.I smiled at him and said"Firstly, calm down. Breathe. Secondly, why not? Let's go", I said, walking towards Blossombee..."Oh no. You didn't", I said, laughing out loud.James and I were hanging out at the cafe and talking. He was narrating his childhood story while I snickered at his cheeky past behaviors."Unfortunately yes, I did. I also got into detention because of it", he said with a fake groan. As we continued chatting about things, I saw Aiden walk through the doors like he owned the place. His eyes met mine for a second before they slipped towards James. He gave one last glance towards me and walked out of the place. I gulped, remembering our last incidence-something I never told anyone."He has been like that since high school", mentioned James, observing my curious expression."What do you mean?", I asked, processing the fact that James and Aiden used to go to the same school."He always used to get into fights and stuff. You can never wish to witness his temper. Trust me, it's very ugly", he said, with a serious tone.I frowned at his warning. Everybody that I speak to simply warns me to not approach me and I surprisingly find it wrong. Why do they judge him without even talking to him?...I sighed and opened my laptop, checking my emails. I have applied to numerous jobs and I should probably hear from them soon.A sudden loud knock on the door startled me. Who could it be at this time? I was sure that it wasn't Anna or somebody I knew.Paranoia took over me and I grabbed a vase with me for my safety. I tiptoed towards the door and carefully opened it, with the vase ready in my other hand.I frowned when I realized that it was Aiden."What are you doing here?", I gulped. My eyes scanned his whole appearance, making me realize he was hurt. Again."And, you're hurt.", I stated. He made his way inside and raised his brow when he saw the vase in my hand."Uhm, nothing. Come in.", I said, inwardly smacking my head...."You cut open your wound.", I said, cleaning up his wounds and sensing Dejavu. "I think you need stitches for this one."I was surprised by how calm he looked. It was like he was used to all of this."It's not necessary.", he stated.I scowled at his statement and decided to ask him about all of this."What happened?", I asked. "Why do you always get hurt?"His eyes darkened at my question."It's none of your business, Haven.", he snapped.I gasped at his tone."How do you even know my name?", I asked, baffled. He stood up and raised his hand to ruffle his har which made me flinch."I have my ways, Haven.", he replied vaguely.I was not buying it. I needed to know."No! You have to tell me how do you know my name or anything else about me!", I grimly said.He threw the vase that was on the table, shattering it into numerous pieces. I let out a small scream, startled by the unforeseen smash. He looked at me, sending me shivers down my body."Listen to me and listen good. You better not ask me things you are not ready to hear. Just stay clear and do as your told. Am I clear?", he said.I slightly nodded, perplexed by everything. He nodded and let out a "Good" before sitting on the couch for me to continue to aid his wounds."Who was he? The one you were sitting with at Blossombee. Is he your boyfriend?", he asked, with an expression that said I better answer him."No. James is my friend.", I replied meekly, not wanting to set him off.He quietly nodded with what looked like relief or satisfaction. After dressing up his wounds, I quietly arranged everything and asked him if he needed water or anything. He shook his head and got up to leave."Stay safe", he said, before walking out of the door.I stood there, still contemplating what exactly happened today....I slightly knocked on Anna's door and waited for her to open it. Her hurried footsteps were heard before the door opened as she peeked from behind the door."Haven! You haven't called me?", she exclaimed, quickly opening the door and letting me in.I was feeling extremely disturbed and I wanted to distract myself badly. Anna is the best person to rely on during any kind of swings.I was about to suggest her that we could watch a movie when I noticed a purple contusion on her arm that she desperately was trying to hide. I took a step forward near her to see a faint bruise on her cheek. Was she hurt?My mind concocted different scenarios in which Anna could get hurt. I gently touched her cheek and saw her flinch."Anna? What happened? Were you hurt?", I asked, softly, holding her hand. She fiddled with the hem of her dress, something she used to never do, and looked at me."Uhm, it's stupid, I fell down the stairs", she nervously laughed.I narrowed my eyes, not completely believing her. She would've told me if she fell, right. I brushed it off, not wanting to push her more."Let me guess. Here to watch movies?", she asked, eyeing the snacks I bought on the way.My lips broke into a smile as I dumped all the junk on the couch. In a few moments, we were giggling as we opened the bag of chips while flipping through the movies. I honestly needed it with everything happening so fast..It was late at night. I could stay back at Anna's for the night. However, a part of me wanted to see him around. Would he be there lurking around the streets? Is he hurt again?I brushed off all the tho
I still couldn't process the fact that Aiden kissed me. After the kiss, I didn't waste a minute but rushed towards my place and never came out. A part of me wanted Aiden to follow me or knock at my door when the night unfolds, however, I decided to not show myself out for a couple of days. I spent the weekend indoors, reading and applying for jobs. It was nice to find myself in solitude for a few days, which gave me time to think. It took a while when Sunday blew in and I decided to visit Anna for our usual movie nights. I left her a message only to know that she was planning on going to the club and invited me to tag along."Some other time, Anna. I really don't enjoy parties that much", I replied to the phone.Parties trigger my anxiety and bring back some unwanted memories that I desperately try to bury with me. I knew that Anna would insist and I prepared myself to answer her in all ways."Come on, Haven", she said, "have fun for once in your life"After a long conversation of her
"Lisa seems like a very bubbly person", I said, remembering her noticeable energy. He uttered a quick "yes, she is" with his eyes on the road, never glancing away.I started to realize that I walked for so long to be this far from my house or Aiden's place seem to be further away."What were you doing there all alone? In the middle of the night?", he said, after some time, glancing at me slightly. To be honest, I did not have an answer. If I did, it would sound stupid. I put my curl behind my ears and replied." I lost my way after attending a party," I said, trying to make it believable. He raised his brow before replying."It didn't look like it. Are you lying to me, Haven?", he asked, without showing even the tiniest bit of hesitancy.I took a deep breath before attempting to tell him the truth." I came outside for a walk to clear my head. I didn't realize that I was going astray.", I said, feeling stupid by the way it sounded. He seemed convinced but he didn't respond, leaving m
It took us a little while to get back to his place in silence. Uncannily, I didn't want to get off the car. I just wanted the journey back to go on forever, putting the time on loop and not even getting a glimpse of the future. When we reached his place, I expected him to get off the car and make me do the same. However, we stayed still for a few minutes in silence before Aiden started the engine and drove around for a little more time. I was too tired to be surprised how he could know what I wanted."I need to tell Anna about all of this, I guess", I said. "Uhm, she kind of invited me over tonight. And, it'll be a problem if she randomly comes over to my place."Aiden seemed to be thinking about what I had said as his frown deepened."Don't visit her for a few days, until I understand the seriousness of this situation. You can just tell her that you'll be busy for a couple of days.", he said, still putting thought to it. "Just find a reason.""Yeah, just blatantly lie to her.""Blata
It had been a while since I started my stroll. I started to think that it had become my thing to forget time while going on walks to get some fresh air. Remembering that the last time I did this it didn't go well, I decided to go back. No matter how many times I find myself in front of the mansion-like house of Aiden, I can never get used to it.I hummed along with the song that was playing in my head parallelly with my thoughts while stepping inside the house. I decided to greet Martha and let her know that I came back home before going to bed. However, shattered pieces of the bud vase that used to stand on the end table caught my attention. I immediately dashed inside to see if Martha was okay only to find her cleaning an even larger mess of glass bottles and glasses."Oh my god! Martha! Is everything okay?", I exclaimed, rushing towards her and picking up pieces."Oh! It's okay, dear. I think Aiden is having a bad day. He tends to take it out on things surrounding him.", she said l
I prepared my monologue in mind when I saw him enter the house, checking something on his phone. He went straight to his room after sending a quick glance at me. This was it. I decided to go to his room, knock on the door, and tell him that I needed to talk to him about something.Letting out a huge sigh, I made my way across his room being hit with a sense of Deja Vu. It was funny though, a few hours ago I decided to just run away from this place and go home. However, I was not someone who'd make impromptu decisions. I didn't want to risk anything or anyone. So, there I was succumbing to the gravity of the situation and standing in front of his door. I slightly knocked on his door and waited for him to say something."What?", he snapped, clearly agitated with someone disturbing his solitude.I cleared my throat before speaking."Uhm, it's me", I said, softly. After what felt like a minute or two, he opened the door. I noticed a hint of faded shock on his face. He probably was not exp
I rested my head on the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. Last night, we kissed again. I guess, it could have gone more forward but we stopped and declared that it was too late. It was almost nine, which means I had to get ready for work, which means I had to face Aiden. Would it be awkward to look him in the eye after last night? I was not sure.I lazily dragged myself to the bathroom and got ready for the day.Breakfast was moderately entertaining. I told Martha about college and a little bit of my previous job. With everything that had been happening the last few days, I realized that I had not been checking my emails or applying to new jobs nearby. We chatted for some more time until I saw Aiden making his way down the stairs and checking something on his phone. I took a sharp breath and held it for God knows how long. He gave me a quick glance and approached the dining table. Martha immediately got up, ready to serve him breakfast."Finish your breakfast, Martha", he said, b
I think it is established by now that whenever Aiden and I seem to look at each other, our eyes always trail towards each other's eyes. They are the complete opposite which makes it all the more reason to be attracted."Hey", I chirped, making James turn his head to take a look at who I was waving at. It was obvious to him that I didn't know anybody in this town except him and Anna. And right then, Aiden too.Aiden made his way towards us and stood there impatiently."Shall we go?", he said, tapping his foot restlessly on the ground.I frowned at him. He was unnecessarily rude to James by not acknowledging that I had company or that there was a familiar human right next to us. I decided to ease the atmosphere by ignoring his question."Aiden, this is James one of my best friends at work. James, this is Aiden, uhh you know?", I said, pointing at each other.James replied with a 'hi' to which Aiden responded with a nod."Shall we go now?", he repeated. This made me even more agitated at
I could not concentrate much on work even with James around to crack the lamest jokes. After some time, he approached me with a grim expression. "Is everything okay, Haven?", he asked. "You seem to be a little off today." "Yes, James. I am fine. Just a little tired.", I said, letting out a sigh. He gave me a side hug and rubbed my shoulder as a sign of comfort. The little things he does and says usually leave an impact on me. I decided to tell him about Anna and my decision to tell her everything. "James.", I said, "I need your advice about something." He looked at me slightly surprised as I usually do not do this. James knew me and saw me as an independent woman. So, seeing me in confusion and desperate for advice could have perplexed him. "Of course, Haven. What do you need?", he said, frowning. "Let's go to Blossombee after our shift and you tell me everything there?" I nodded and continued with my work while he gave me one last glance before going back to his shift. It felt
Something about last night helped me have a better sleep. I did not know whether it was because of the assurance that Anna would be safe or the certainty that Aiden would always be there for me no matter what.I woke up later than usual with heavy body aches. I blamed it on Lisa for tiring me out by taking me out. My daily ritual continued until it was time for me to go to work. I had second thoughts about going to work with my fatigue, so I decided to inform James and go late."Hey, James.", I chirped into the phone. " I can't make it early today. Is it possible to cover for me for a few hours?""Sure, Haven. Is everything okay?", He asked, worried."Yeah, just a little sick, Jamie.", I said.It was understandable for him to be worried because I had not usually asked him to cover for me unless it was an emergency....I made my way down the stairs and greeted Marth
My mind concocted various reasons why Anna would run away from me. I connected the dots to the day when I found bruises on her face. Was she in trouble? The very thought that she could be in trouble and I had been doing nothing to help her, killed my insides. I redialed her number only to find it going straight to voicemail."Hey, Anna! How are you? I thought I saw you at the club but couldn't reach you. There are so many things I need to tell you. Call me.", I sent the voice mail.I made sure that I did not sound worried but in reality, I was freaking out. My mind made up all indifferent scenarios just to make it worse for my sanity. Eventually, a sense of realization struck me when I remembered her boyfriend, Kyle.Did he do something to hurt her?I pushed past the crowd and came outside the party to get some fresh air. Everything around me seemed to move pretty fast that there was no moment to bre
