A sense of relief swept through him the moment he slid into the black Ferrari. Switching on the engine, the music blared into the confined space. Putting the gear on reverse, he whipped out of the parking area, then exited the Worthington estate.
A cool breeze washed against his skin, which was nice. James let his mind drift off, thinking about everything and nothing. About twenty minutes later, his cell phone rang. He glanced at the screen and noted the name flashing at him. A smile crept across his face. He flicked on the loudspeaker, at the same time muting the music.
“Hey, sweetheart,” he greeted.
“Daddy?” Aria said.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are you coming home soon?”
He laughed. “Yes. Have you finished your piano lesson?”
Aria paused, then said, “Yes. But, Daddy, Sammy won’t eat the food I gave him. He’ll starve if he doesn’t eat. I’m worried. He hasn’t been eating properly for days now. Should we take him to the vet?”
He frowned. “I’ll be home in a minute, Aria. Daddy will take care of it.”
“Really?” She laughed merrily, which made his heart glow. “Daddy? I’ve just learned a new piece today. Do you want to hear it?”
“Of course,” he said even though he knew she was horrible at it. He didn’t think piano was her thing, but he couldn’t say no because she’d wanted to learn so much.
“It was hard, but Mrs. West told me…”
James shook his head. There she goes again, he thought.
“Shit!” he swore as his foot slammed hard on the brake while one hand pressed down on the horn and the other expertly turned the steering wheel, veering the car out of the way. The sound of tires screeching against asphalt was loud in his ears. An agonizing short moment later, the car came to a complete stop, missing hitting the girl by mere inches.
“Daddy?” A panicky voice reached him, and James realized Aria was still on the line.
He took a deep breath and said calmly, “Everything is okay, sweetheart. Just a rabbit on the road. I’ll see you soon, all right?”
“All right,” Aria replied, uncertain.
He quickly cut the line and opened the door.
The girl was sprawled on the ground, her backpack and printout map scattered around her.
He came to stand before her, concerned she might be hurt. He watched her gaze drift up his legs and then finally to his face. The moment he saw her fully, his gut churned into a delicious twist of sensations. Large, frightened eyes stared up at him. Her face was flushed and delicately pretty. Long, tangled, braided hair rested haphazardly over one shoulder. The longer he looked at her, the more he was convinced he’d seen her somewhere before. Then it hit him! Andy Donovan. Fucking hell! She looked like Andy Donovan. This had to be his sister.
He couldn’t believe Andy’s sister was this young. She didn’t look much older than twenty. Her email suggested otherwise though. Short and to the point with a no-nonsense beating-around-the-bush way. From the email, he thought she was in her late thirties, armed with two million dollars.
He was wrong. He knew the moment he met her eyes this girl didn’t have two hundred dollars in her wallet, just like her brother.
Crouching down to one knee, he looked closely at her. Then she had to go and lick her lips. His gaze was drawn to the glistening, plump flesh, and a surge of desire rushed through him.
Oh shit! Not a good first impression. Nothing good was going to come out of this. The girl looked like she needed a good ravishing, on those lips and maybe a lot of other places on her body.
To distract himself, he asked, “Are you all right?”
When she didn’t respond, he wrapped one hand over her arm. Electrical sparks charged between them, and he felt the wind get knocked out of him.
Sparks!
Fuck! He felt sparks for Andy Donovan’s sister.
His hand tightened on her slender arm as he felt a sudden overwhelming yearning rush through him. He slammed down the urge as quickly as it came. Slowly, he guided her up, his gaze hot on hers. Then he took a step back, refusing to think about the attraction that was inching its way back to the surface.
“Don’t walk into the road without looking if you don’t want to get hit,” he said.
“Thanks,” she replied softly, followed by a tentative smile that took his breath away.
He walked away reluctantly. In the car, he switched on the engine and turned his gaze to watch her again, curiously. She was busy gathering her belongings. Her actions were delicate, and he had no idea why he found it so fascinating. After pushing the gear forward, he pressed his foot on the accelerator and sped past her, heading up the hill.
If she was coming up to see him about her brother, she’d have a hell of a hike to get there. He hoped like hell she wouldn’t. At least not now, not after he’d smelled her, sweat and dirt mingled with something sweet, which was delightful. Not after he’d seen the perfect color of her flushed face and felt the softness of her milky-white skin. She was too fucking tempting by half. His hands itched, and his cock stirred and hardened as blood began to migrate there, readying the little beast for action.
He slammed the arousal shut at the same time he pulled up the hand brake. Switching the engine off, he took a deep breath, his face dark with a scowl.
“Fuck!” he muttered under his breath as sexual frustration spurred hot in his veins once again. He shut his eyes and took another deep breath. A few seconds later, knowing the feeling would be gone soon, he got out of the car and headed up to the front door.
Ms. Lane, the housekeeper, waited for him.
“Where’s Aria?” he asked, his back to her as she carefully pulled down his jacket.
“Upstairs in her sitting room, sir,” she replied tonelessly.
He headed up the stairs two at a time. On the second floor, he went into Aria’s sitting room. She was reading a book, and Sammy and Alfie, two balls of white fur, one big and one small, a Samoyed and a Westie, were beside her, resting their heads on her lap. Ms. Sophie Wilson, Aria’s nanny, sat on a chair not too far away. When James cleared his throat, Aria glanced up. Her face was bright when she saw him.
“Daddy!” she squealed with delight, rushing to him and throwing herself into his open arms. The two dogs were after her and barked excitedly at his feet.
Lifting her, he kissed her on the cheek. “One for me,” he said. Then he kissed her on the other cheek. “One for Uncle Scott.” She giggled when he proceeded to kiss her forehead. “And one for Uncle Eric.”
Aria wrapped her little arms around his neck and kissed him back on his hard cheekbone. “One for Aria.”
He laughed. “Yes, one for Aria.”
“Daddy, Sammy won’t eat.” She pointed down at the Samoyed with accusation. “He won’t listen to me.”
James raised his brows. “Oh? Shall we see if I can make him eat then?”
Aria nodded enthusiastically, and Alfie barked excitedly. James carried her out of the sitting room and then down the stairs toward the kitchen, Sammy, Alfie, and Sophie following close behind. All the while, his little darling kept on chattering, telling him about her day at school. Suddenly, she stopped and asked, “Daddy? Is the rabbit all right?”
For a moment he didn’t understand what she was talking about. Then he remembered, and an image of the girl sprawled on the ground sparked in his mind. A sudden desire to kiss and taste those plump lips seared hot in him.
He snuffed down the scorching craving and concentrated his attention on his lovely daughter instead. “The rabbit is fine.”
“Why didn’t you bring it up? It might have been injured and needed nursing.” She sounded disappointed in him.
He felt like someone punched him in the stomach, hard. Guilty as charged. Why didn’t he offer to bring Andy’s sister up? Because he’d wanted to kiss and fuck her right there and then, and having her sitting in the car with him would just be too tempting.
“It wants to go home to its family, darling,” he said evasively.
“So its mommy can nurse it back to good health?” Aria asked innocently.
“Yes,” he said, finally reaching the first floor.
“But what if it doesn’t have a mommy?” she asked, her bright-blue eyes large. “Like I don’t have a mommy because Mommy ran away?”
A toxic surge of anger and hurt rushed through him. He stroked his daughter’s dark hair fondly and said, “It’ll have a daddy to look after it.”
“Like me?” she asked, smiling happily.
“Yes, sweetheart, like you,” he replied.
She tightened her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. They went into the kitchen a moment later, and Martha greeted him with, “Mr. Maxwell, what can I do for you, sir?”
As usual, she looked flustered in his presence. He was used to staff, regardless if it was here in the house or at the various Maxwell hotels, resorts, and commercial buildings around the world, looking and acting like he was about to pull a gun and shoot them in the head. It was just as well, because he’d had his fair share of shooting people in the head. Not to mention a lot of backstreet and underground fighting.
“Sammy needs food,” he said.
“He just had his,” Martha stammered, her face a little pale as usual.
“He didn’t eat it,” Aria said. “Daddy is going to make him.”
Martha looked at the dogs. “I’ll prepare it for him again right away, sir.”
About five minutes later, Sammy sniffed at the lump of brown meat in his bowl and took a small bite. Alfie helped himself to the food as well. The greedy brat!
“He’s eating,” James said.
“How come he only listens to you?” Aria asked, her eyes large and accusing. She was so cute; he couldn’t help but kiss her.
“I have no idea,” he said honestly. “Still want to play for me?”
She nodded enthusiastically. James lifted her and carried her across the hall to the back of the mansion where the music room was located. The dogs left their food and followed them out, as did Sophie.
He was soon listening to his darling daughter playing mistuned music when the knocks came at the door.
Ms. Lane stood there, her hands clasped before her. “Security needs a word with you, sir.”
He’d known it was coming. He turned to his daughter. “Aria, Daddy has business to attend to, all right?”
Aria nodded. “Can I take Sammy and Alfie outside to play?”
“Of course you can.”
Glancing at Sophie, he said, “Make sure she doesn’t go into the woods.”
“I’ll make sure of that, sir.” She smiled at him, her eyes bright.
He’d admit Sophie was a remarkably beautiful young woman, and he always wondered why she would want to be stuck here as Aria’s nanny. He knew she was more ambitious.
He dismissed the thought from his mind and walked out the door, up the stairs, and into his office. Switching on the intercom, he demanded, “What?”
“Sir.” The voice of Peter O’Neil came through. “There’s a girl here to see you. She said you sent her an email requesting her presence?”
He switched on the laptop screen connected to the security camera. The black screen flashed on, and then a moment later, the girl’s face appeared before him.
He stared at the screen, at Andy’s sister, long and hard, and felt his cock stirring again. “Does she have a name?”
“Mia Donovan, sir.”
He took a deep breath, his eyes still on the laptop screen, on the girl who caused sparks, the girl who managed to awaken his cock without even doing anything seductive. He was so fucking going to regret this.
To Peter, he said, “Let her in.”
MiaThe moment I sighted the humongous gate, my heart missed a beat. I glanced at the number, and sure enough, it was the right property. Or rather estate, because stretching before my eyes were acres of lawn and woods. I hadn’t yet seen the house, but I knew it was going to be big.I stepped over to the intercom and pushed on the button. A buzzing sound came through, and then a male voice said, “Yes?”I nervously cleared my throat. “I… I’m here to see Mr. Maxwell.”“Do you have an appointment with him?” He was harsh and straight to the point.“No, I…”“No appointment, no Mr. Maxwell.”I panicked and knew he was about to end our conversation. “No, please. I mean he sent me an email asking that I come to see him. I mean… Mr. Maxwell sent me an email a couple of weeks ago.”A pause and then, “Your name?”“Mia… Mia Donovan,” I said quickly.“Wait there a minute,” he said, and then the intercom buzzed.I looked around me, taking in the scenery. It was something to do while I waited. But re
MiaOnce Aria was out of sight, I shut the door and busied myself finding a pair of clean jeans and a T-shirt. Personal stuff fell out of the backpack in the process, including a packet of muesli bars I’d made myself two days ago back home in Mystic Spring, a small town no one knew existed in America. On cue, the sound of my empty stomach churning reached my ears, and I hastily unwrapped the packet. I quickly munched on one as I stripped myself naked. I hadn’t eaten since yesterday evening, my last meal, and it had been more than fifteen hours.Still chewing, tasting the sweetness of cereal, dried fruits, and nuts in my mouth, I turned my attention to the shower. Twisting the handle to the right, a burst of cold water sprayed at me, making me jump. I turned it a little farther to the warm section. A few seconds later, it was at the right temperature, and I sighed in relief. It felt so good, and the water temperature was just right. Sticky brown goo ran down my body, leaving my skin onc
Mia“I messed up his room,” I murmured to myself. I glanced at that king-size bed with the expensive duvet cover of grayish blue and black and felt a delicious shiver pass down my spine. Then I turned my attention to the floor. I sighed and proceeded to find a pair of jeans and a T-shirt that were still intact. No such luck, of course.I was midway through pulling my ripped T-shirt on when three knocks came at the door. I quickly pulled the rest of the thin gray material down my body and said, “Come in.”The door cracked open, and Ms. Lane silently entered. She stood straight as she faced me, her hands clasped before her as she addressed me. “Are you ready to see Mr. Maxwell?”If wearing ripped jeans and a shirt without a bra—because that very last one lying on the floor was torn beyond repair and unwearable—was ready, then yes, I was as ready as I could be to face the billionaire my brother owed two million dollars, the man who’d seen me with my naked backside in the air.I murmured,
MiaHe still had his hand wrapped behind my head as I stared up at him, panting, my breasts rising and falling, my lips red and sore from his wonderfully brutal treatment. He didn’t at all look as though he was affected by the kiss. His breathing was even, though his eyes were darker, with a blue fire like I’d seen when I was naked and met his gaze in his bedroom only a short time ago.He was stroking my lower lip now. I wanted him to stop because it was dully aching, yet I wanted him to continue.“Are you a virgin?”The question took me by surprise, and I shoved his hand away from me.“What does that have to do with anything?” I asked. “What the heck if I am? Is it a crime to be a virgin at twenty-two?” I stood, shoving the chair back in the process. If there were any certainty at all, I’d be a virgin for the rest of my life, because I knew I wasn’t going to settle down with just any man. Then again, I’d also been certain I was never going to let any man kiss me either, unless he was
JamesHe was so screwed. So fucking screwed. He shouldn’t have let Mia in, but he did, and now look at where it got him. He was fucking turned on, and his damn cock was hard and sticking out like a goddamn steel pole.Shutting his eyes, James took a deep breath. He knew the beast down there wasn’t going to be satisfied, and he needed to act fast.In ten seconds flat, he was out of the office, up the stairs, and into his bedroom.“Out!” he snapped at the maid busy cleaning up the mess Mia had left behind only minutes ago.“Y-yes, sir,” she stammered. She flew out in a hurry, dragging the vacuum cleaner with her.James headed to the en suite and slammed the door shut. Then he proceeded to take off his clothes, throwing them in a heap on the floor. Naked and muscles tight with sexual frustration, he shoved on the multihead shower. He stood there under the running water, one hand resting against the wall as he inhaled and exhaled deeply.“Fuck!” he hissed, staring at his engorged cock. He
MiaI stared up at the darkening sky, wondering why my life sucked so much, wondering how the heck I was supposed to find two million…wondering if I should take up Mr. Maxwell’s offer. No! the voice in the back of my head shouted. I wasn’t that low. I wasn’t about to become his prostitute.Selfish! the voice screamed at me. You’re a selfish bitch, Mia. It’s Andy, your brother. You’d do anything for him.I sat up, wiping away my tears. That’s right. I’d do anything for Andy. He was all I had. I couldn’t lose him. He needed me, and I needed him. I’d find that two million. Somehow. Someway.Grabbing my bag, I flung the ripped thing over my shoulder and hoisted myself up.The moment my legs straightened, the world spun around me. I gritted my teeth as I shut my eyes. I knew I was very dehydrated and tired. The way I was going, I’d collapse soon. I couldn’t allow that to happen. I needed to find a place to stay for the night and then something to eat.Turning the bag over, I unzipped it and
MiaIt was another twenty minutes later when he pulled into a parking lot. I noticed the many flashy cars parked here. He switched off the engine and got out. Uncertainly, I undid my seat belt and did the same.He was already in front of me by the time I shut the door.“I won’t run,” I said, annoyed he should act like my unwelcome bodyguard. “I want to talk to my brother.”I glanced up and saw the slight smile lifting one side of his lips.“Good,” he said, wrapping a hand over my arm and steering me close to him.As we walked to the door, I felt like I was glued to him by the hip. I scowled and tried to sidle away from him. The feeling of him so close didn’t sit well with me. I was hot and tense at the same time. I couldn’t believe he was turning me on by just holding me close. He tightened his grip on me and even went so far as to rest his other hand around the back of my neck, under my braided hair. I jumped, a gasp escaping my lips. He knew I was about to pull away and tightened his
Mia“You can really eat, can’t you?” The deep timbre of his voice came my way. The tone hinted at humor, and I wondered if the billionaire found my fondness for food amusing.Of course, I couldn’t deny the fact that I loved food. Andy called me the “eating goddess” because of how much I could really put in, despite my slim, willowy frame.I licked my spoon clean, savoring the warm, soft brownie and the cold, creamy ice cream in my mouth. I licked my lips, a smile on my face. When I glanced up, I saw James watching me intensely, as if he found my reaction fascinating. I, in turn, felt butterflies in my stomach.I placed the spoon down onto the empty plate and said, “Thanks for dinner.”James cocked his head to one side and smiled. It was a very handsome expression that snatched away my breath.“You’re welcome,” he said smoothly. “Shall we?”I watched as he stood, pulling on his jacket. The moment is here, I thought with a mixture of dread and relief. I’d be able to talk to Andy. Suddenl
MiaThe day had been long and exhausting for me, especially after James, Aria, and I had started that lunch with Liam, Scott, Eric, Alice, and Yuki. Then, of course, once we were done with that, Liam had suggested we stay for dinner as well since Alice, Yuki, Aria, and I seemed to get along so well. He had said that the sisters needed company near their ages, someone they felt comfortable with, since America was so new and different to them. Of course, I had fun spending time with the sisters, but I must say both Scott and Eric—well, mostly Eric—had behaved poorly, a side of them I had not seen before.Boy, was I glad we were finally home. After helping Aria bathe and dress, I lay beside her—along with Sammy and Alfie, who were being very nice and obedient, snuggling comfortably near Aria—reading them a bedtime story. When I finished the book, I tucked Aria in.I was about to kiss her good night when Aria asked, “Mia? Do you love Daddy?”That took me by surprise, and I blushed intense
MiaWilliam arrived to pick up Savannah at eleven that morning for their return flight to Vegas. After Savannah and I had hugged tightly, Savannah said, “You have to come to Vegas again soon.”Beside me, Aria was excited. “We can ask Daddy. He did promise to take me there soon.” She turned to her father standing not too far away. “Isn’t that right, Daddy?”James nodded. “Yes, sweetheart.”Once William and Savannah departed, James, Aria, and I went to have lunch with Liam, Scott, and Eric at the main house. Of course, I had no idea this was happening until this morning after breakfast when James happened to just casually mention it. And to be honest, I wasn’t exactly prepared for it. Wasn’t it like my boyfriend taking me to meet his parents for the first time? Which freaked most girls out because they had to give a good first impression. But then again, what was there for me to prepare for? I had already met Liam last night, after all.Aria seemed excited to see her grandfather again,
JamesThe moment their father appeared at the door, James knew for a fact that Eric wasn’t happy. He knew also that, soon, the youngest brother would bring up the subject of their father’s future young bride and demand details. Of course, James had no idea why Eric was so riled up about something this trivial. After all, their father was very popular with the opposite sex, regardless of age, and for him to tie the knot again, with a twenty-five-year-old woman at that, wasn’t all that surprising.Currently, they were drinking, nibbling, and chatting about various topics—social and business. They even talked about Herbert Weston and the Mexican mafia, which didn’t much interest James. To him, what was done was done. Of course, what really interested James was Mia.Fuck! He wanted to kiss her and make passionate love to her, but alas, he obviously couldn’t do that until everyone left.It was around midnight when Eric finally brought up the much-anticipated subject. Of course, James was q
MiaI dismissed the thought of my brother and Matt from my mind and headed into the bathroom to shower. When I was done, dressed in a lovely loose, long-sleeved blouse and trousers, my makeup lightly done, since my bruised skin was still too sensitive, I headed out the door.I found Savannah sitting on my bed, waiting for me.“Hey,” I said. “Sorry, I think I might have overslept a little.”Savannah chuckled. “No worries. I did that this morning as well. I was so tired.”I nodded. Of course, her having found out about my kidnapping had really scared her, and the whole situation must have exhausted her. Now that I was safe and sound, everything had just kind of caught up to her. I didn’t miss the dark circles under her eyes, either.I was so moved by the fact that she had been so good to me, especially since we had only been friends for a short time, that I gave her a tight hug again. “Thank you for coming all the way here and helping out.”“It’s fine, Mia,” Savannah said. “You’re my fr
MiaThe next day, I was finally discharged from the hospital, and James, with Andy tagging along, came to pick me up that afternoon. Of course, both men watched over me like mother hens as I slipped out of bed and began to get myself ready.I was just reaching out for the luggage to start packing when Andy said, “I’ll do that for you. You go and get changed.”I nodded and headed into the bathroom, a dress in my hand. While Andy packed my stuff into the bag Savannah had brought for me, James was in the bathroom, aiding me with getting dressed since my movement was slow. Of course, I didn’t mind the fact that I was half naked in front of him, in just undies and bra and my bare skin marked with dark bruises everywhere. After all, he had seen me naked last night when he was making love to me, albeit under the dimness of the wall light.“Raise your arms,” he instructed as if I were his daughter. I thought he was being very parental toward me.I smiled as I obeyed him, raising my arms high
MiaI was finally judged to be well enough to allow a proper shower by myself instead of the occasional sponge bath by the nurse, which, to be honest, was rather embarrassing to say the least. And of course, now that I didn’t have an IV line connected to me, it was even better. After retrieving a towel and the bathroom essentials that Savannah had considerately brought for me yesterday evening, I headed into the bathroom. I took my time brushing my teeth and cleaning myself thoroughly, and, of course, enjoying the warm water on my skin. By the time I was done, I smiled with glee at the fact that I now smelled like the Garden of Eden. After donning the undesirable hospital gown once again and putting on some night cream over my still lightly bruised face, I headed back out, humming to myself.“You sound like you’re having a fine time showering,” the night shift nurse, Laura, said, chuckling.“Hello there. Yes, it’s the first time in five days I’ve showered, so…”Laura nodded. “I can un
MiaWhen I woke again, I felt a lot better. The headache was gone, as was the exhaustion. After cleaning myself up for the second time that day, I returned to my bed with renewed determination. I will no longer allow the thought of Herbert Weston to affect me. I will not cry remembering the trauma he inflicted on me nor the distress he caused me—physically, mentally, and emotionally. I will be free from that bastard! With that, I settled myself to read some magazines Brenda had left for me, and it wasn’t long before lunch arrived. It was also around then that Andy appeared at the door again. With my mouth still full of food, I stared at him wide-eyed as he walked toward me.“Hey,” he said. “Feeling better?”I quickly swallowed my food and reached my arms out for him, begging for a great big hug again.Andy came over and took me into his arms as I wrapped mine around his torso.I chuckled as I raised my eyes to look at him. “I hope you’re not driving Matt crazy because you’re so worrie
MiaWhen I woke, my hands were resting on the empty space on the side of my bed, and I wondered why it felt so warm, as if someone had been there only moments before. I shifted my body and then inhaled deeply. The scent that was unique to James caressed my nostrils, and I smiled. He had been here, hadn’t he? Sleeping next to me. My heart soared at the thought, though at the same time, I was a little disappointed that he didn’t wake me when he had arrived. We could have had a little chat and kiss.“Good morning.” A nurse I didn’t recognize greeted me as she came into the room. “How are you feeling this morning, love?”I gave her a bright smile, my lips and mouth a little sore in the process. Obviously, my wounds had not yet healed properly. “I’m good. A little pain, but it’s fine.”“That’s good,” she said, grinning brightly. Then she came over to stand at the end of the bed and picked up my medical record. She quickly scanned over the documents, and a moment later, looking rather satis
JamesWhen James came in through the door after a long day at the office and headed toward Mia’s bed in the hospital that night, he found her deep in slumber. Standing by her side, he gazed at her long and hard, noting the bruises on her beautiful face. Fuck! He wanted those unsightly marks gone as soon as possible. The sight of them reminded him of Herbert Weston and what the bastard had done to Mia, and once again, he felt rage erupting in his being. For perhaps the hundredth time, he swore nothing like that would ever happen to Mia again. He’d protect her. He’d cherish her.For now, she looked peaceful in her sleep, but he knew it wouldn’t last long. Soon, it would start, the nightmare, as it had the past three nights. She’d start crying and screaming and begging in her sleep as that terrifying episode of her kidnapping returned to haunt her. She’d scream for Herbert Weston to let her go. She’d beg for him to stop hurting her, and fuck, but the sheer fear and panic in her voice bro
