LUCAS.

I didn’t expect to run into Sophia the moment I returned to the city, but I did.

Now she was lying in my bed, her skin a little pale, her eyes filled with sadness and a shell of herself.

“Elias and I divorced two weeks ago,” she remarked in a low voice and although my face was devoid of any emotion, deep down, I was shocked.

Elias and Sophia used to be so in love with each other. What happened for them to divorce?

I wanted to ask more but I changed my mind, seeing how the topic was uncomfortable for Sophia.

“You rest. I need to meet a few friends later on,” I said before leaving her room with the tray.

Heading downstairs, I placed the tray in the kitchen and took out my phone. Dialling Wilson’s number.

“I knew you wouldn’t cast me away the moment you returned!” His voice boomed over the speaker and I pinched the bridge of my nose.

“Cut it out. I need you to investigate everything that happened to Sophia in the last three years that I’ve been gone,” I instructed.

There was something off and I wanted to know what it was.

Sophia was so happy when I was leaving. How did she end up like this?

Just after cutting the call, my phone buzzed and I sighed when I saw that it was my father who was calling.

Word does spread pretty fast. I need to check who the mole is.

“Hello, Dad-“

“You ungrateful brat!” Dad’s angry voice reached my ears. “I heard you arrived a few hours ago. Why haven’t you called?”

“I was going to ca-“

“Nonsense!” He cut me off. “Come home for dinner today without fail!” Dad ordered and cut the call without waiting for my response.

I sighed heavily, knowing what awaited me at the Hart estate. The only person I was close to was my father, Steven Hart.

As for the rest, let’s just say we had been enemies since I don’t know.

...

I drove into the estate, the place already feeling heavy for my liking.

Although this had been where I spent most of my childhood years, it still felt like I was walking into a stranger's home with Richard, my elder brother, his wife, Olivia and his son, Elias, living there.

I walked into the living room and found them all waiting except for Elias.

The fuck... did they think I was a tourist attraction that they needed to watch?

“Lucas! My son! You look great!” Dad was the first to exclaim with a genuine smile.

“Good evening, Dad,” I replied, not returning his smile, not wanting the other two to think I was here to be friendly with them.

“Welcome, Lucas. We didn’t know you were back. It’s good to see you,” Olivia chipped in with her annoying, fake-ass voice and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her.

Dad never liked it when we didn’t get along. So I was trying to be civil for him but god, my brother’s wife was annoying as fuck.

“It’s good to have you back,” Richard said and my eyes fell on him.

The look in his eyes made me scoff internally. He failed to disguise the hatred he has for me.

My face still remained emotionless. I used to get affected and irritated by these two in the past but now I just see them as small fries.

Dad studied me and nodded in approval as if he liked what he saw.

“Now, this is the demeanour of a CEO. You’re different from before... in a good way. I think it’s good that you left, son. Look at you. I feel so proud,” Dad complimented and I saw Olivia roll her eyes.

Dad’s right though. So many things had happened during my stay overseas. I had grown both physically and mentally.

We kept chatting until Elias rushed into the living room, his eyes looking bloodshot and worried.

“Grandpa, I’m here,” he stated.

“So? Do you want me to start dancing?” Dad asked and I almost burst out laughing.

Elias suddenly noticed me and his eyes grew so wide they could fit his face.

“U-uncle Lucas. Long time, no see,” Elias remarked. “Welcome back.”

Elias was about to take a seat when a pillow landed on his back.

“Useless fool!” Dad yelled. “Why did you divorce Sophia? Do you know what such a label would do to your career?”

I looked at Elias and saw him hesitate. He suddenly gained the courage and faced Dad.

“Grandpa, I didn’t divorce her on purpose. Violet is pregnant with my child and I can’t let my heir be born out of wedlock. It’s the right thing to do.”

What? Violet… isn’t that Sophia’s best friend?

My heart clenched for Sophia… that’s why she looked so devastated. This fool betrayed her with her close friend.

A sneer escaped my lips.

The right thing to do?

So he thought divorcing a wife who loved him for his mistress who happened to be her bestie was a noble thing to do?

“Grandpa, don’t be angry, please. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to have an illegitimate grandchild. Sophia couldn’t give me kids. I had to do what I had to do.”

I clenched my hands into fists. If Grandpa wasn’t here I would have delivered some slaps to Elias's face to teach him a lesson for disrespecting Sophia.

However, this development could not be so bad after all. It could work in my favour.

I heard Dad sigh. “Fine. Do whatever you want. But, you need to compensate Sophia. You’ve wasted that young woman’s time.”

Although Dad had agreed to Elias’s absurd relationship, my nephew looked a bit strange.

He looked worried but he forced a smile.

“I’ll do that, Grandpa,” he replied reluctantly.

Dad’s attention fell on me again and I knew what he wanted to ask before he could even say it.

“Lucas, you’re thirty now. When do you plan on getting married?” He asked. “Have you found me a daughter-in-law during the time you were away?”

Dad let out a dramatic sigh. “I wonder if I’ll be able to see my other daughter-in-law before I die.”

All eyes turned to me, waiting to hear my response.

I leaned back in my seat and a small smirk crossed my lips. “Don’t worry. I have a plan.”

LUCAS. I slammed my fist on the table, anger bubbling up in my chest at what I had just read. So, Elias only married Sophia to use her, not because he loved her. To think I sat through dinner with this type of person fills me with disgust. I’ve never really been a fan of my brother or his son because they treated me like an enemy in the past but I didn’t think Elias’s character was this bad. At least I thought he really loved Sophia and made her happy. That's why...“Is this all?” I asked Wilson while waving the file at him. Something seemed to be missing but I couldn’t put my finger on it. After having dinner, I got a call from Wilson and he told me he had found the information I needed. This was why I liked Wilson. He was swift and reliable when it came to getting stuff done. So, before I drove back to my villa, I quickly passed through the office to see Wilson and see what he found about Sophia. My blood boiled when I realised what kind of dick Elias had been to Sophia. Not on

SOPHIA.I blinked once. And then twice. Lucas’s words hung in the air and my jaw dropped to the floor. Wait… what? Did he just propose to me? It took a moment, but I soon came back to my senses and burst into laughter. I laughed so hard that my insides hurt. “Oh, Luca… when did you start telling jokes? Did you not only change but you tried to become funny too… haha,” I said in between laughter. I saw Lucas frown deeply, his face serious like he was one of those CEOs in short dramas. My laughter began to fade, awkwardness falling between us as I studied his expression. He didn’t look like he was joking. So, he really wanted to marry me?“You’re not serious, are you?” I asked, my voice low. Lucas glanced at me, a calm look on his face. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking because his face did nothing to betray his emotions. This was not the Lucas I knew. This one was a bit cold, distant even. Did something happen while he was away?“I’m serious,” he replied in his deep husky vo

SOPHIA. The sun's rays flitting into the room woke me up the next day. I squinted my eyes, stretching and still feeling a little sleepy after having spent almost the whole night tossing and turning in bed. Lucas gave me some time to think about his offer and I couldn’t sleep because I spent time thinking about our conversation. Finally, I had made a decision after weighing my options. What more did I have to lose?I quickly got up from bed and freshened up before going downstairs to look for Lucas. As I descended the stairs, I felt my heart racing a little faster than normal. Was I really doing this?Just as I stepped down the last step, I almost bumped into someone in a neat, tailor-made black suit. I looked up and found Lucas staring down at me with that same serious look on his face. He towered over me, but my view from down here was spectacular. God knew what he was doing when he was creating this man. He was so fine.In this proximity, I could smell his manly cologne that

LUCAS.Finally, she was mine. I glanced at the blonde beauty seated next to me in the backseat of the car and my heart felt at ease. Never would I have imagined that I would get married the moment I returned to Edenport City. Dad had been trying to arrange a marriage for me with one of his childhood friends' daughter, but I had refused. He gave up and begged me to choose a bride of my liking, but I was still uninterested because no woman appealed to me.However, when I realised Sophia was now available, I quickly took the opportunity to marry her and here we are.“Are you going to work in the Hart Group?” She asked me. I internally scoffed at the idea. After the way I was treated three years ago, the Hart Group will have to beg me to join them since my dear nephew has done nothing but let the company sink faster than the titanic. Looking at Sophia, I replied, “I’m not sure. I’ll see.”Sophia frowned. “How are you going to help me with my revenge when you’re not part of the compan

SOPHIA.We were back at the villa and although I knew I shouldn't let Elias affect me, I had been in a bad mood since I saw him. I hated him for cheating on me and locking me up against my will but I couldn’t deny the other part of me that still longed for him. And I hated myself for it. “Are you ok?” Lucas’s voice reached my ears and I looked up to find him staring at me with concern flitting in his blue eyes. Was I ok?I wasn’t. I didn’t think I would be able to face Elias at the party. Back there on the road, he didn’t even know it was me but I was so affected, I couldn’t stop trembling. “Can I not go to the party?” I asked Lucas, biting my lower lip. “I don’t want to see Elias.” Something flashed through Lucas’s eyes but it was so quick I couldn’t make out what it was. “Are you afraid he would ask why I’m going with you?” He asked in a dangerously low voice. “Do you regret marrying me after seeing him again?”My eyes rounded at Lucas. “What? LUCAS. I looked out the window and frowned deeply before putting my phone away. I had just been on a call with my father. He asked me to show up for work today. The only reason I would work in the Hart Group is if I’m the CEO. I didn’t even need the Hart Group anyway; I built my own empire. However, Dad didn’t sound so good. The company wasn’t doing so well and he needed me to come in and help. I will work with them, but I’ll be taking my rightful place as the CEO. Not because I need the Hart Group but because I have to teach Richard and Elias a lesson. My mind flittered to the beautiful woman in the other bedroom and a small smile crossed my lips. Things were beginning to get into place one at a time. I quickly showered and dressed up in a dark suit before heading downstairs. My eyes widened when I found Sophia setting up the table. It took a while for her to calm down after we left the cemetery.I had to signal Rick to take a longer route to the office. I wanted her to have someone beside her as she cried and remembered her parents.“I will go with you,” she replied, her voice resolved and determined.A smirk curled my lips. I reached for a strand of her hair before playing with it in my hand.“Wait for me at our home. I’ll take you shopping when I knock off from work,” I said before looking outside the window. Rick had just parked in front of the Hart Group building.“Our home?” Sophia’s voice came.I glanced at her, giving her one of my rare smiles.“Yes. It’s been three years and you still can’t surpass Lucas! You’re the same age but you can’t even keep him out of the company! He just returned and you already gave up the CEO’s position just like that!” “Dad, I didn’t expect him to come back so soon. Grandpa said he would make me the CEO if Lucas didn’t come back in three years! But he came back right before I could get the position!” I replied, feeling frustrated. LUCAS. “We found high levels of scopolamine in your father’s system. Someone’s been drugging him,” Doctor Devon Kim, my father's personal doctor, said. “They might have switched out his medication when no one was looking.” My hand clenched into a fist, anger searing through me. “What does the drug do?” I asked through gnashing teeth, barely managing to mask my anger. Who the fuck had been drugging my father and why? This was getting out of hand. “It treats motion sickness and nausea, but if taken in high doses, this drug can lead to hallucinations, disorientation, temporary blindness, and it could lead to a coma,” the doctor answered. “It seems whoever drugged him wanted him to either lose his mind or go blind. Perhaps they wanted him to do something against his will while in a disoriented state. Luckily, he collapsed while he was already here, otherwise, we wouldn’t have found out he was being harmed.” I clenched my jaw, my stomach twisting and turning with worry. I wouldn’t

I swiped the contents on the table to the ground, banging the side of my fist on the surface of the table. “Fools! All of you! How can you fail to get rid of that bastard and his stupid wife?” I snapped, anger bubbling in my chest. They had one job... To kill Lucas and make it look like an accident. But what did they do? Lucas and his wife were still alive! "Perhaps I should kill you for failing to do your job." The man who had come to report shivered, making me scoff. “We did what you told us to do. Didn’t you tell us to make it look like Sophia’s parents’ accident, so that no one can trace it to you? That’s what we did. We just didn’t expect Lucas to be so good at defensive driving.” “Nonsense! How many times will you give me excuses? You all fail to do anything until I do it myself!” I hissed, glaring at him. I never addressed him or any of my men by their names. Those were my r

SOPHIA. I narrowed my eyes when I left Lucas’ ward and found Elias waiting for his father in the hallway. How dare he come here? His eyes widened when he saw me, a flicker of worry flitting through them.I scoffed. Who was he trying to fool? Whatever worry he was showing was fake. “Sophia, are you ok…”“Why are you here? Haven’t you done enough?” I cut him off, my voice laced with so much venom. His eyebrows furrowed. “What are you talking about?” I sneered, glaring at him. “Don’t pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about. You tampered with the car’s brakes and caused our accident!” Elias’ eyes grew wide like dinner plates. He shook his head, saying, “I did no such thing. I didn’t even know where you guys were.” I clutched the arms of my wheelchair, anger bubbling up within me. Apart from Elias, I couldn’t think of anyone who would want us dead. He seemed to be telling the truth, but I wasn’t so sure. He was a master at lying and pretending after all. “Look, Sophi

CASPIAN.“Shit,” I cursed, looking down at the vast city below us.I was never one to make mistakes but this... this was a total fuck up. I knew Lucas would never blame me. As expected, he said he would have still gotten into an accident if it was meant to happen. But I begged to differ... if I had updated him, he would have been more cautious. The only relief was that he didn't get killed in that accident. Otherwise, I would have never forgiven myself. Ever. Glancing at Carla, I admitted, “You were right. I should have told Lucas. All this is my fault.” We had gone out to a balcony at the far end of the hallway, wanting to give the couple privacy. “Don’t blame yourself… I also knew, but I didn’t say anything either. Who would have thought they would make a move while we were on the island?” She replied, tucking her short hair behind her ear. There was some stray hair that kept blowing in front of her face, and I was tempted to brush it away for her. I looked away, placing my han

LUCAS.“Help me up,” I said, glancing at Caspian who looked like he hadn’t slept or bathed in days. He was blaming himself for not telling me about my former nanny's death. However, the accident wasn't his fault. We wouldn't have known they had tampered with the car... so whether he told me earlier or not, the accident would have still happened. “No… stay still. You can’t move in your condition,” Sophia said worriedly. Tears were still rolling down her cheeks, and I just wanted to kiss them away. They made my heart ache. “If I don’t get up, how will I hug you?” I uttered just as Caspian came to my side to help me out. I bit back a groan as I sat up, my back resting on the headboard. Every cell in my body was in pain, but I didn’t show it, not wanting Sophia to worry. The last thing I wanted was for her to feel guilty that I shielded her with my body. “Be careful,” Caspian whispered, his eyes falling on my broken arm and leg. I nodded and signaled for him to leave the room with

SOPHIA. My head throbbed as I struggled to open my eyes. Where was I?I gulped, trying to swallow, but I felt like I had swallowed a piece of hot coal. “Water,” I croaked out, wincing. It was too painful to talk.No. It was painful to do anything, even breathing. “Here’s water,” a female voice reached my ears, and my eyes slowly fluttered open, my headache feeling more intense at the blinding white light. A glass of water was brought to my lips, and someone helped to prop my head up. I took a sip of the water, and my throat instantly felt better. “Thank God you’re awake now. I was so worried.” Now that my head was clear, I could make out the voice that was speaking to me. I turned slightly to look at Carla’s worried face. Alice was by her side, looking down at me with tears filling her eyes. “What happened?” I asked, realising I was in a hospital ward. Suddenly, a flash of memories rushed through my mind, making my heart pound like a galloping horse. Our car was hit by a tru

LUCAS. “I’ll drive my wife back home… Caspian, can you give Wilson a ride?” I asked, looking at him. It was the next day, and we had just gotten off the ferry after a few hours. The ride back to town was a bit far, and I wanted to be alone with Sophia. Caspian rolled his eyes. “It’s fine. As long as he stays the fuck away from my sister.”I let out a chuckle. “I thought you wanted her to get married.”“It’s not me… it’s mom who’s been pressuring her,” he replied, his jaw clenching. “Well, then Wilson is not so bad—”“Do you really think my parents would accept a bodyguard or assistant as their son-in-law? I would rather prevent her from falling in love than her having to fight with our parents because of a man,” Caspian said. Adrian and Damian had already left the moment we arrived. Adrian had an ad to shoot, while Damian was on call at his family’s hospital. Carla was talking to Sophia a few meters away, probably making plans about their schedule for the week.I sighed, looking

We had already changed into dry clothes when we got called for dinner at the beach. I looked around, loving the set-up. Lanterns hung from nearby trees, illuminating the table that was laden with grilled seafood, roasted vegetables and lots of other foods. “You'd be hungry after all that screaming. Jeez, I thought someone was trying to kill you or something,” Caspian remarked, earning a glare from his sister. “Are you even my brother?” She questioned. “How could you splash water at me like that? I’ll tell Dad and Mom that you bullied me on this trip.” “What are you? Five?” Caspian asked, laughing. “Go ahead… they are going to tell you to get a husband instead.”“You–” Alice fumed. We went at it like rabbits. In the end, I was the first to pass out. I could tell how hard we went at it from the aches in my body. It was like we were trying to make a baby. I tried to move, but realised there was something hard inside of me…My eyes widened. It seems I had slept off with Lucas’ dick still in my core. His strong arms were holding me as he spooned me, the warmth from his body seeping into me. “Good morning,” Lucas’s deep voice reached my ears, and I raised my head, turning to look up at him, my face burning. I bit my bottom lip. “Morning.” Lucas smirked, reaching over to tuck some of my hair behind my ear. “Tell me what –”“You won the bet. What do you want?” We spoke at the same time, and my eyes widened. What did he mean I won the bet? I clearly passed out first before him…“No, I
