THE SUN isn’t up yet, but Alexis already budged in inside the trainees’ room. “Wakey, wakey,” she said, hitting her stick on the metal bar of the bed. The trainees groan with astonishment. Who wouldn't be? Their commando bulged in in their room in the middle of their sleep! But they had no choice but to obey what the superior had commanded them.
“Get ready for today’s training. Move faster, turtle buddies!” said Alexis as she leave the trainees’ room and budged in with the others, just like the others, they groan because of the surprise. But what do they even expect?
Blanche leans on the porch, sipping on her cup as the steaming coffee touches her wounded lips. Aerith punch me real hard yesterday, she thought as she remember their sparring yesterday. It was their second sparring since they arrived here. She chuckles and shrugs as she reminisces what they've always done when they had enough time.
“So the captain was up early,” Alexis tapped her shoulder and seated on the steps beside the porch where she was leaning. Holding her stick, she writes something on the snowy ground. “I did not sleep since last night,” she replied, gazing at the newly arrived superior.
“The General gives us a lot of work, isn’t it?” Alexis said, not minding what Blanche just said. “Yeah,” she plainly replied as she sip on her cup, again.
“D'you have any idea why did they hire these recruits? I mean it was too sudden,” shrugging, Alexis stood up and pat her butt, removing the dust that stick on her pants.
“Just like you, I’m clueless,” Blanche responded, staring blankly at her black coffee.
“Well then, I better figure it out by myself. It was not nice to talk with you, Blanche. It’s so not nice,” Alexis said then leave, making Blanche chuckle and lean back on the porch while staring at Alexis' retreating back.
The General, indeed, gives them too much work. She even had no idea why the sudden decision of having recruits and letting them train those newbies. But it was not Blanche’s work to figure things out. A total opposite to Alexis’ decision where she decided to figure things out on her own, she wouldn’t let the General’s personnel, especially if it is Blanche and Aerith, budge in with her actions.
“Now that you’ve mentioned it, it was really mind-blowing. Imagine, he called me just to go in here and train the recruits,” Son Hyun Ah confessed. The latter was just listening to the other’s rants. “The General’s action was weird, don’t you think Hyun Ah?” Alexis asked, looking intently at the Korean girl.
“Nah, I don’t think so. Stop being too paranoid, Alexis. He wouldn’t do those things to you, besides, you’re also---”
“Quit it, Hyun Ah.” Alexis reprimanded, stopping what Hyun-Ah was about to spill.
“What? The General cares for us,” Hyun Ah said but Alexis wouldn’t let that sink in her mind. The General didn’t care for us, he only care for his personnel. She thought.
“The General---”
“What about the General, Alexis?” Aerith interrupted the conversation between the two.
“Nothing,” she said, walking towards the sink and placing her empty cup on it. “I was just saying that the General was putting everything on our shoulder, don’t you think so? Starting from the introduction of the training and now this, the actual training. Despite knowing that we have other comrades who can perform these kinds of responsibilities, why'd he choose us?”
About to open her mouth and comment on what just Alexis said, Aerith instead harshly heave a deep sigh. “You know nothing.” And with that, Aerith leaves the two alone.
ONE, two. One, two. Repeatedly, she counted while holding her sword and slashing it in the air, imagining that she was slicing something in the air. Swish-swash, the sound of the sword along with the air. Blanche was in that state when Alexis throw an apple toward her, Blanche nonchalantly sliced it into two and let it drop to the ground.
“Nice body coordination and alertness,” Alexis said as she clasp both of her hands while sarcastically smiling at her fellow comrade.
“What do you want from me?” Blanche inquired, continuing what she was doing before the latter arrived.
“Well, I’m a bit worried about this creature. She’s kind ‘a weak,” said Alexis. Blanche stop swishing-swashing her sword as she heard someone reply to what Alexis had stated.
“I am not weak!” Aracelli rebuked making Blanche raise her brows and sigh.
“Oh yeah, you’re not. You’re just a weakling, what a shame!” said the Commander in Chief.
“You want me to train her?” asked Blanche while the latter nodded. Blanche examined Aracelli before nodding. “Alright, sure.”
Alexis bade her goodbye and then left the two behind. She can’t handle a being like Aracelli, her headaches as she saw the girl. For her, Aracelli was just a piece of some lost girl finding her way to get out of the scene but hey! This is the reality, she can’t escape the fact that all of them will offer their lives just to die. There’s definitely no way to get out.
Alexis shrugged as she totally return to where she came from, to the training ground, where all the recruits are full of activities.
“Double time!” she shouted.
The captain stared at Aracelli. “Can you even shoot a being from afar?” Stunned as she was, Aracelli drew her attention to Blanche. “What was your reason for joining this organization when you can’t just even harm someone?” The superior lean forward while both of her hands are inside her pocket
“I…” the recruit hesitates to respond.
“Let’s try,” Blanche threw a pocket knife in the direction of the other but Aracelli just step aside, causing the knife to land on the ground. Blanche raised both of her hands, “Why d’ you avoided the knife? You should catch the knife!”
“Why would I?!” Aracelli shouted, trying to hide the uneasiness she was feeling.
“You should do what I am commanding you! Now, get yourself back in your position and let’s try it again,” Blanche hastily grab a knife the threw it against Aracelli, the latter tried to catch it but she failed, causing her to cut one of her left fingers. “Don’t mind the wound, be alert on what I am going to throw against you then try to catch it, once you have succeeded to catch it then throw it back at me.”
Blanche again continues throwing other stuff against Aracelli. Aracelli moved fast as she again tried to catch those kinds of stuff that Blanche was throwing unto her, there was a time when she could catch it and throw it back to Blanche, but mostly, she got herself hurt. “You have the guts to pay those military staff just to let you join this organization yet you do not have enough skills,” Blanche said bluntly, shrugging. “Come here,” she signaled Aracelli to come near her.
Aracelli cautiously took a step, one by one until she reach Blanche’s location. Blanche suddenly grabbed Aracelli’s arm and twist it. The other yelp because of the pain but Blanche did not pay any attention. She pulled Aracelli closer to her, still holding the other’s arm; twisted.
“Fuck! Remove your goddamn hands on my arms!” Aracelli shouted, face turning red. “No one will be going to hear you scream in pain, Aracelli. No one will follow your command when you enter a real battlefield,” she said, whispering in Aracelli’s ear.
Blanche release her arms after a minute, Aracelli checked her arms and it was red, hand mark of Blanche was plastered on them. She was whimpering because of the pain. “Are you proving to me that you are really a weakling just what Alexis said?” teasingly, Blanche smirked.
“I am not a weakling,” Aracelli said, attacking her abruptly. Punches, and kicks, are too weak but can hurt someone when they practice these skills. “Great,” Blanche said, holding Aracelli’s both hands. Both of them are panting.
“You can do it yet you still want me to mock you before you show me your skills,” Blanche said, removing the blood from her lower lips. Aracelli just stared at her, shoulders moving up and down. “Come near me,” she commanded but Aracelli shrugged.
“I don’t want to, you might hurt my arm again. It sucks,” Aracelli reprimanded causing Blanche to laugh.
“I’m not going to hurt you. Let’s clean up your wounds,” she said, holding Aracelli’s arms and letting the other to seat on the bleachers. “You need to learn how to protect yourself, Aracelli. This is not about saving others but this is about saving yourself from dying.”
Clueless as she was, Aracelli's brow furrowed at what her superior just said. Blanche, on the other hand, got her kit under the bleacher and open it. "You shouldn't get yourself involved in this kind of situation, Aracelli. It's not for you," Blanche stated bluntly as she carefully grab Aracelli's arm, placing it on her lap. The Captain then slowly put on an antiseptic on the wounded fingers of the recruit.
"Why are you saying these to me? Are you afraid that I might steal your position or what?" Aracelli asked, looking at what her Captain is doing.
Blanche chuckles as she gets some bandaids inside her first-aid kit. "To think that you have the guts to ask me that question, do you really even think that you can defeat me? At your current state, really?" The captain smiled but those smiles did not even reach her eyes. It was more like a bitter smile.
Aracelli's quite confused. She knew that the Captain is aware of her reasons but why is she telling this stuff to her? "I ain't telling this to you because I want you out of this job, but I am telling you this, for you to be aware. You couldn't trust these people around you, not even me. You know nothing about the job that we're supposed to be doing, Aracelli. If I were you, I wouldn't let myself get involved in this kind of situation."
Aracelli hastily grab back her arms and stood up. "C'mon, I know you do know why'd I join this! You know---"
"You want to kill me, don't you? If that's the case then here," Blanche extends her hands holding a knife towards Aracelli. Aracelli then stared at the Captain's hand. Blanche signaled the recruit to accept it. "We are alone here, Aracelli. You can kill me if that would make you feel free from the past. After all, I had nothing to lose. I had lost almost everything long ago," Blanche look at Aracelli with a blank face. The trainee couldn't even read what the superior is thinking.
Aracelli tightens her grip on the knife, she's shivering about the thought that her superior gave her a chance to kill her using her bare hands. But what she couldn't figure out is why?
She bit her lower lips as she lowered her gaze, she let the knife she was holding stumble on the ground. "Do you really think that killing is always the answer?" Aracelli mumbles. Blanche's lips parted, about to say something. "If it is not for killing, then what for?"
Both of them hastily gazed at the owner of the voice. Alexis stood a meter away from them. "We've been thought to kill almost everyone that gets in our way." She said, walking near them. She reached out the knife that Aracelli had recently been holding and seated on the bleacher. "You couldn't blame us for thinking that killing is always the answer because we've grown up, surrounded by people who used to kill. And what's worst is that we are taught to kill as well."
"But you always had a choice to make any difference! To change what those guys have taught you!" Aracelli insisted. Blanche sighed as she seated beside Alexis. "We can, but at the same time, we couldn't. We can change and make any difference as you have said, but that scenario will only be buried to death once they've killed us." Blanche closed her fist, veins can be seen on her hands as she tried to hide her disgust.
"We can always make a difference, but that thing is, we need to be cautious not to get caught by the higher officials. Once they caught us, we were dead as fuck. That's what you need to understand, Aracelli. Once you've entered this job, there's no turning back. All throughout your life, you need and are required to be devoted to the job that you've been through. Even if you are resting in your grave" Alexis laughed bitterly.
"But now that you've mentioned," Alexis stood up and stared at Blanche. "Blanche will soon have to make her decision if she'll stay to be a puppet of this organization or... fight for her freedom," she added as she stretched out her arms in the air.
FIRE. The whole cabin was on fire! How does it happen? Nobody knows. Even Blanche who was now showering with her own sweat doesn’t know a single thing. All she knew is that when she came back after doing their mission, the whole cabin was on fire. “Good thing all the trainees are outside,” Son Hyun Ah said, heaving a deep breath. Blanche look around, one, two, three, four, wait--- how many was the recruit anyway? All she knew was she had five of them. What was the name of those five? The captain's trying to recognize their names and faces. “Wait! Have you seen Aracelli?” she inquired to others, worried about the other recruit. She glanced at the spot where they were resting but there was no Aracelli. She return her glance to the burning fire, the front part of it was now fuming like hell. She looked at Aerith who was currently wearing a breathing apparatus. “Aerith, may I borrow that?” she drew her attention to Aerith and then back to the cabin. She thought t
THE PAIN will make you yelp, whimper, and cry out loud. To torment, that was their work but it was like that the fate has reversed. The General didn’t see this coming, well at least he did not foresee this one to come this fast. A group of opponents entered their site without their knowledge. “How are you, General?” Agent Ghost inquired, walking towards the higher official. The fierce eyes of the girl meet the innocent yet bold look of the General. “I’m expecting you to be surprised,” she added while wearing a sweet smile. The agent is holding her M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle across her chest while looking intently at the General, alert that every moment, the General might fire at her. “You’re alive?” asked the General, a puzzled look can be traced on the officer's face. Perhaps the General could not believe his very eye. Here, standing in front of him, his previous officer. By the question asked by her former superior, the agent and her comrades could not he
THE MIDNIGHT air touches the being’s skin yet she was oblivious about it. Walking back and forth along the middle of this place calm herself. She haven’t slept for two days, worried about the higher officer. Aracelli pulled her hair out of frustration, biting her lower lips. “Seems like you’re still awake,” said a voice from nowhere. Taken aback, Aracelli slowly looks at her back to see nothing. “Who’s that?” she said, acting valiant. She heard a shaking of the bushes and just in front of her jumped a familiar figure. “Trainees are not allowed in here,” the guest’s voice gave a shiver in her spine, it was strange for Aracelli. “You should go inside and take a rest,” the guest added and try to walk away but Aracelli stopped her. “Please stop bypassing me,” she pleaded as she held Blanche’s left arm tightly. The latter did not bother to look in Aracelli’s way instead, Blanche fidget her arms just for Aracelli to let it go but to no avail. “What the fu
TIRING and nerve-racking, Aracelli’s chest was pounding up and down as she take a rest. Both hands are placed on her both knee, making it support. She hasn’t got enough slumber, again, and yet, here she is, doing some routine on her own this daybreak. “I can do this,” she kept on murmuring as sweat made its way to her cheeks from her forehead. “I can do this,” she repeated. Picking the swords up, she made her stance and shut her eyes. “Keep yourself alert. You need to protect yourself from now on, Aracelli. Don’t let yourself get in trouble again just like what happened in the past.” She said those words to herself, making her feel proud. She continues the drill until her dark past chases her. The place was haunted, from the little girl’s standpoint. Terrified as she was, the fugitive guffawed like a mad wicked witch that you can see in films. Quivering in distress, she moved closer to the wall, greeting the cold surface. Shattered glass was on the floor’s ca
THE STEAMING aroma of the freshly brewed coffee welcomed her, first thing in the morning. She rely on her couch as she took a sip on her cup, thinking of the past. It was never included in her plan to meet her wife, she just feel the need to. The girl has been diverted with everything except Blanche. But when Blanche interrupted her mind, she’ll go and check the being. She surely misses Blanche but she can do nothing about it. Sighing, she wipes away the tears on her cheeks. “I have been staying away from you for too long, I can do it all over again if that's the only way you can forget about me,” she utters as she shut her eyes. “Venus,” a baritone voice called for her name. “I’m glad that you’re awake,” the serious tone of her superior made her shiver. “What are you doing inside my room?” she weakly asked. “Where’s my wife?” she added, roaming her eyes around the room. The latter shrugged and gave her a sly smile, “Who knows? Maybe
THE CLOCK was continuously ticking and with every second passed by, the two beings remain silent; as if they do understand what a silent atmosphere means. Staring blankly at the ceiling, Blanche sighed. Beside her was Venus who was breathing heavily. “How come you’re still alive, Venus?” she breaks the silence but still not looking at the other. Staring sideways at Blanche, Venus reaches for the latter’s hand and holds it. “It was my sanction, to pretend that I am dead.” “After all these years, I really thought you were gone. I thought I lost you,” Blanche said, panting. “But I was shocked when I saw you inside the cabin, what are you doing there?” she inquired. Venus guiltily stares down at the blanket and removes her hand from Blanche’s. “We’re about to start a combat between you and your comrades but we went there at the wrong time, someone put the cabin on fire,” she explained. “For how long will we fight? Our team. We do stand t
DEFEANING SILENCE greeted this being's attention. It has been a week since the last time she saw her wife and it frustrates her as she is currently staying inside this room covered with mostly white painted walls. The sliding window was left slightly open, curtains parted in both directions; swaying as if it is dancing, as the air flows inside. She took a glance beside the room's side table, there, she can see the envelope that was given to her. It was her payment for her service, she scoffs at the thought as she lay her head on her pillow as the being shut her eyes, and furrowed her brows. Tick-tock, tick-tock, the sound of the wall clock is the only thing that she can hear inside her room. Irritated by the sound, she hastily woke up only to find her superior's presence. The higher officer is sitting beside the footboard of her bed, reading a newspaper."I bet you're already awake, officer," her superior said, while still reading the newspaper. Venus sighed as she rolled her eyes hea
OFTENTIMES, people in your surroundings will judge you without even knowing what you've been through and why you've decided to perform your actions. Nevertheless, people will base their judgment purely on their perception which has nothing to do with how you deal with your life. Venus chuckles at the thought as she reveals how she survived her unplanned death of hers. The steaming cup of coffee welcomed Venus' scent of smell. She's standing near the window of their quarters as her fellow comrades stare at her with their eyes widened. Some of them had their mouth barely open, conceivably, they could not sink in what Venus had revealed to them. It was indeed an unimaginable event. "I may not be existing now if it wasn't because of you," Venus said while looking at Alexis. The other officer shrug and sighs, "I've just done what's on the plan." "Well, but then again, if you were a minute late, perhaps, I may be in the tombstone for real, innit?"
A YEAR had passed for Blanche and her family, and during that time, she’d come to realize that building a family wasn’t as straightforward as the missions she had taken on in the past. Yet, despite the challenges, she saw it as a different kind of adventure—one she could cherish alongside the people she loved most. Shiobhan had just turned four last month and was now attending nursery school. Blanche and Venus shared the responsibility of caring for their daughter, and they were both incredibly hands-on. It didn’t have to be perfect, but they made sure to be present for every moment, big or small, ensuring that Shiobhan felt loved and supported every step of the way. More than anything, they had learned that it wasn’t about getting everything right all the time—it was about showing up, being there for each other, and navigating the highs and lows of family life together. They had their struggles, of course, but through it all, they held on to the love that had c
BLANCHE was lost in deep thought when she suddenly felt something warm and soft touch her hand. She flinched slightly and looked down, surprised to see a little girl standing in front of her, holding her hand. Confused, she glanced around the room, wondering if anyone had brought a child along. "A kid?" Yama noticed Blanche's bewildered expression as she stared at the little girl. Yama approached, but as soon as she got close, the child quickly hid behind Blanche's leg. Blanche chuckled. "She's scared of you—probably thinks you're a monster," she teased, then bent down, gently cupping the child's face with her hand. "Are you lost, sweetheart?" Blanche asked softly, offering a kind smile. The little girl giggled, cupping Blanche's face in return. "Hi," the little girl greeted with an adorable voice. Blanche's companions watched curiously. "Hello," Blanche replied in a gentle tone, making sure not to startle her. "Do you want m
THREE months had passed since the downfall of the Black Spectre, which had dominated headlines across Europe. The buzz around it had begun to fade, but for Blanche, life was taking a new direction. She had joined MI6 as a Chemical Pharmacist, now holding the rank of Chemical Weapons Specialist. Rather than participating in operations, she focused on the technical and analytical aspects of chemical substances, especially concerning explosives and drug formulations. "Aren't you going to take your leave?" a voice broke through her concentration. Blanche turned to see Chief Langley approaching and smiled. "Ah, Chief Langley," she said, removing her goggles and gloves. "How's your new position?" Natalia asked, her gaze assessing her daughter-in-law. "Good! I'm honestly enjoying it," Blanche replied, rubbing her nape. She still couldn't believe how she had completely forgotten her mother-in-law's face. What a crackhead she felt like! Natalia n
AS THE sun began to rise, the abandoned building came to life with the sound of authorities collecting guns and other illegal paraphernalia. Outside, Blanche and her team waited for the investigation to conclude, the weight of another all-nighter heavy on their shoulders. Blanche sighed, lifting her gaze to survey the chaos around her, where everyone was busy gathering evidence to use against General Grey. “Finally getting a breather, huh?” Venus’ voice broke through, pulling Blanche’s attention. She turned to see her wife approaching, a smile breaking across her face. “Right,” Blanche replied, though Venus arched an eyebrow, sensing there was more. “Remember the one thing you asked me? To know me more?” Blanche added, her tone shifting as Venus nodded, looking at her with an intensity that made Blanche’s heart flutter. “I guess it’s time for you to know,” she said, rubbing her nape shyly. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Venus; rather, the missions
CAUGHT OFF guard, the General’s team failed to anticipate the twist that had just unfolded. His face flushed with anger, veins throbbing at his temple. Slamming his palm on the table across from the cell where his enemies were held, he glared at them with unbridled fury, his chest heaving as rage overtook him. His eyes locked onto Astrid and her team, the realization that he had been outplayed dawning too late. The prisoners remained calm, their eyes meeting his with an eerie stillness. The power he once held over them was slipping, and he could feel it. "General, we have been compromised! Two snipers are in sight!" One of his men shouted urgently over the communication device, his voice trembling. "I repeat—" The transmission cut off abruptly, leaving the air thick with tension. "Nikolai! Assemble our men!" the General barked, his voice echoing with authority. Cessair couldn’t help but scoff, a smirk forming on her lips as she watched her father’s
THE THREE of them sat in stunned silence, barely able to process the truth that had just been revealed on the news. Their mother was alive. As if her legs had turned to jelly, Cessair sank to the floor, her hands bracing for support, while Blanche leaned heavily against the wall, rendered speechless. Vixx nearly spilled the water she was drinking in shock. “What the hell is happening?” Blanche gasped, blinking as she struggled to absorb the whirlwind of information. They had been focused on gathering intel about the situation outside the Emerson building, and now they were confronted with the astonishing reality of their mother’s existence. But that wasn’t all—she had also revealed their identities to the world. “I... she... she’s alive?” Cessair stammered, swallowing hard against the lump in her throat. She clutched her neck, feeling a sudden tightness that made it hard to breathe. “My father…” She couldn’t finish the thought, her mind racing. All this time, s
RECEIVING no updates on the whereabouts of Vixx, Blanche, and Cessair, the Director reached out to Yama, urging the search and rescue team in London to continue their efforts. There might still be an eyewitness who had seen the three of them. The situation was dire. The company's stock had plummeted, and the board of directors, driven by fear of financial loss, began to panic. It wasn’t surprising—many of them were more interested in their profits than the lives involved. With a sigh, the Director rubbed her temples, forcing herself to focus. This time, she needed a concrete plan. Lucien’s proposal had cast a glimmer of hope, guiding them toward a solution. Desmond had now joined Yama's team and was working closely with them to devise the strategy. Venus, still in shock from what she had witnessed, couldn't hide the disbelief in her expression. Astrid, noticing her state, scoffed slightly before addressing her. "You know, you can talk to your father
DETERMINED to save her sister, Blanche turned back toward the building, refusing to retreat with the team. She couldn’t leave without knowing for certain that her elder sister was safe. The thought of something happening to Cessair gnawed at her, and she knew she would never forgive herself if she didn’t try. Despite her injuries, Blanche managed to make her way down to the lower levels. But with no idea how much time remained before another bomb might detonate, doubt crept into her mind. Would she have enough time to reach her sister? "Cessair..." she whispered, her voice trembling with worry. Just as she took a deep breath and started down the corridor, a familiar voice stopped her in her tracks. "Blanche!" She looked ahead, her eyes widening in shock. "Vixxen?" Confusion washed over her as her gaze shifted to the figure Vixx was supporting. "Cessair!" she exclaimed in relief. "We need to get out of here!" Vixx urged, tuggi
UPON losing contact with the team, Astrid immediately commanded Desmond to proceed with Plan B. If anything went wrong, Desmond's priority was to rescue the team and ensure their safety. They needed to avoid any collateral damage at all costs, especially now, when everything was at stake. Alexis had left the apartment just before the opposition could storm the room. They were closing in, fully aware of their presence. It hadn’t been long since they’d arrived in London, using her late father's apartment as a temporary hideout. Their enemies had successfully infiltrated every branch of the Emerson family’s empire—from the pharmaceutical division to the main headquarters and even their mansion. All the intel was compromised. “Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!” Alexis muttered, her leg shaking in frustration. Right before her eyes, the Emerson headquarters had been obliterated in a massive explosion—and worst of all, Blanche was still inside. Aracelli clenched
