Ning Zhuo was exhausted from a whole day of of rough hiking through dense woods. He had not arrived first as this was an endurance over an agility test to see who could handle the long marches associated with being a foot soldier being trafficked to whatever stop they were needed to be fodder for lords who refused to build a half decent wall. The ride to his reporting post would probably be his last taste of a horse in a while as those were luxuries afforded only to a prince. In this test, everyone had to carry their belongings over a twenty mile stretch as they walked from the city towards the remote barracks which were located to an enormous border wall which had b
In two lines opposing stood soldiers with spears, Ning Zhuo grasped his and quickly disarmed his opponent with ease. Sitting on a dais above them was an empty chair and a subordinate who stood next to the chair with a bemused expression as he directed the traffic of losers and winners. The bouts were decided by the subordinate on a chalkboard behind him as the main chair sat vacant. After his quicker bouts, Ning Zhuo would sit at the foot of the dais and watch the other soldiers who took much longer than he did to battle it out. Mostly the deciding factor was who was used to using sword staffs. In most cases, it was the more wealthy or larger opponents. Ning Zhuo was lucky in the couple tries that he had so far that he had idiots. As he rose again as someone called him for a new bout, the subordinate took the weapon out of his hand. "No.""For what reason?" Ning Zhuo asked with irritation. "I won the la
Ning Zhuo looked around himself as he got off the wagon that he had hitched a ride on as his superior rode inside, the general rode inside where he was reading over a military text intently while stabilizing himself on the side of the carriage to stop the rocking. He had never sat outside of a carriage before to guard it and now that he was a lieutenant colonel, it felt strange even more that he was assisting in the training of other soldiers now."Lieutenant Yu, do you ever have the experience of going inside a brothel?" The Colonel, Ao Guong, slapped Ning Zhuo's shoulder heavily."No, I would have been beaten by my grandmother if I did so. I just thought it was not a good idea to have a potential for there to be accidents with the brothel workers.""See you have too much of a thoughts floating around in your head. But this is why the General Gongsun has decided that you will join our little band of wolves. We cannot be dange
The smell of the combination of sickly sweet was overwhelming as Ning Zhuo shuffled behind General Gongsun as they were ushered inside. Woman hung onto the general's every word as it was obvious that he was soldier with the most money. Occassionally a woman's hand would trail over to him, but Ning Zhuo would make sure that the woman's hand would brush along the steel of his sword. The hand would slither down to try to get to his find, but then would slide back, the General carefully dipped back to make sure that Ning Zhuo would not get overwhelmed by the sheer horde of women who were out tonight for money. The brothel definitely was home to over two hundred workers who definitely wanted some gold tonight from a rich client. The private room was spacious and held two beds with elaborately designed curtains. There was a very ornate table and chair as well as a beautiful qin which rested on gold dusted lion's paws.Ning Zhuo cros
"Yanwan," Ning Zhuo turned to Colonel Guong, "you should try to give her a less dangerous job. There is no telling what danger will happen to her. She's unprotected and if there is an issue then we are so far away that we cannot come quickly.""Lieutenant Yu, I see that you have a care for small ladies then. Would you like to be her guard on your days off? You can go visit the brothel and have her serve you wine the entire day. Having it be known that she has a protector other than her older brother could also bring us a benefit. It would be good to have a courier bring information quietly, rather than us all clamboring over there and making a big affair of it." General Gongsun nodded slowly as he looked from his colonel to his lieutenant who were both crammed into the carriage with him as he had gone outside in a downpour after they had returned from the brothel.Ao Guong shook his head vehemently. "It's my sister
"Everyone get out of the room immediately. If it is spoken who is this person, then the punishment will be beheading. I'm not going to have any exceptions if anyone speaks of who was found here today. Get out." As the assassins filed out of the room, Master Guo looked concerned at the former student of his whom he never imagined that he would see again after deciding that there was nothing more that he could teach him. To have a star pupil returned to him in such a sorry state was beyond humiliating. "Ning Zhuo . . . Ning Zhuo? Can you hear me? What in the world is your royal highness doing here in the last place you should be? Why aren't you in the capital serving your royal father?"There was an incessant poking at his head and Ning Zhuo sat straight up as he felt his head and immediatelly groaned. There was an enormous bronze bowl of water which was placed before his bed where reflected he could see th
"Father when picking a good housemaid, she should not be as beautiful as me. If she is going to be by my side and follow me, then she should be invisible to everyone other than the person whose hands she waits on. She must take good care of only me. If I get all of the good qualities in a maid, I am set for success. Then instead of her serving me, she is going to have eyes for my husband instead. Father we have to pick one who is average looking so all the attention will be on me when I enter the room." The small missus of the house strutted around the yard as all the prospective maids were standing in an odd formation around the courtyard.Yan Sha tried to stop herself from rolling her eyes as the young Missus Qian was even more spoiled than she had assumed she would be. In her time in the capital before, a lot of Princess Yan Ming's friends were like this. She had to play as if she cared so she would not be bullied by them.
"Ning Zhuo, it's strange that you survived after being handled by that cult." General Gongsun was seated on Ning Zhuo's pallet as the Taishou towns doctor was palpating Ning Zhuo's wrist. The doctor made a sound with his tongue in disgust as the shallow cuts all around Ning Zhuo's chest had just been bandaged properly by the physician. Ning Zhuo had regained consciousness quickly, but he had felt extremely weak. He burned with fever that only now with the medications from the physician were slowing down enough the pounding in his head for him to have a coherent conversation with anyone."Strange that he survived? It's a miracle. He was obviously thrown off a cliff due to your negligence. Where is the great general I hear about whom treats his men well? Here are you playing with the lives of your new recruits. I am only here due to my interest in who could survive the cesspit of those rebels.""Physician, I understa
The wedding caravan stopped suddenly and Yan Sha felt the sneaking suspicion creep on her back. She jumped out of the line as she wondered what could have stalled the wedding line. She knew that Missus Qian should be out in front shouting at the carriage driver, but there was no sound, as her brave mistress was nowhere to be seen. It was odd.Her feelings were confirmed as she could see up ahead her suspicions had come to light. Up in front as she saw the black masked bandits start to creep onto the young Qian's carriage, Yan Sha dropped the pot she was carrying and immediately sprinted into the woods. As others saw the same, they began to follow her example. As the ruckus started to mount, one of the bandits switched directions and started to hunt the stragglers instead of the main party. She gritted her teeth as she started to wonder why Qian would be targeted. These types of situatios were not unfarmiliar to her,
“Who dares to disturb the emperor after the court session? That’s bold of whatever minister can even bear the thought of death for his point. This is not the time to keep pushing a point that has died through discussion. Tell that courtier that I will execute him if he persists with his petition. I am not in the mood to entertain anybody under any circumstances. I will not be forced into doing more things that I have no care for.” Ning Zhuo nursed his head as his head was spinning after reading so many memorials. Even though the pile to the left of finished memorials was more in height than the one on the right, he knew there was a whole pile of them that his eunuchs had hidden behind a pot to encourage him to continue. It was incredibly annoying as work now was never ending. He already knew all the sides to the argument so he was irked that some small person was still trying to push after being re
Langhua, the queen of Jungpi, put her arms around Yan Sha tightly and started to cry as Yan Sha was too shell shocked to move or react. “You’re healthy. My daughter has finally returned to me the way that she does in my dreams. To see such a beautiful sight is beyond what I have hoped for so many years. I am so happy. You’re healthy finally. I have felt such guilt as your mother for sacrificing so much just to stabilize the reign of the incumbent. I searched so hard for an answer to my question of how to stabilize what I had put up for slaughter.” “Mother I—“ Yan Sha didn’t know what to say as she was so used to the brutality of the ruler. To be even here to see the tears and true joy in her return to a better state of health made Yan Sha realize that her aunt really did love her even if she preferred her own daughter above Yan Sha.
Yan Sha was led to an unmarked carriage on the side gate of the Jungpi palace. It was odd at this time of day and she tensed when she saw it. This was out of her usual routine. No one had left her a note or explained why there was such a deviation so she was instantly alert. Her daggers were with her and she brandished them quickly in a way that would disarm the people around her. But as her movement was swift, there was a clothed man in animal skins who was silent and unexpected to Yan Sha such that she had not thought that such a person would be waiting for her. She couldn’t remember what happened after as the disgusting taste of medicine filled her mouth and she slipped out of consciousness. Her body was dragged into the carriage and the wild man drove off in a huff as all the servants scattered.
Yan Sha looked at Ning Zhuo with a sigh as she could feel the world around her come crashing down. Her breath came in harsh strokes as she tried not to breathe at all, if this was a dream she had to fight hard to make sure that she didn’t wake up. But reality was quick to set in. The bath house behind them was abruptly searched. They could hear the sounds of the maid explaining that there were people just here. “Don’t you feel bad for them?” Yan Sha said with a forlorn expression as she could see their panic and expressions. “They work for me. They are all paid well and even if they are taken into the Prefecture Penitentiary. I will take care of their families and make sure that their descendants are well.”
The black melange was moving up her body which as her clothing disintegrated covered all of her up to her neck. All below the water was pitch black and pulsating. He dropped the torch and there was a hiss as the fire went out. “Crown prince you cannot. I have burned many people. Everyone gets burned as they come close to me. You should not. You cannot. I am poison to everyone. Crown prince, please.” He picked up her body and the black color dripped down onto his hands. He moved swiftly out of the lake. Yan Sha touched his face and bounced back as she remembered what was wrong with her. “Crown prince? Since when have you called me that? If I truly am the cause of this, then I will search day and nig
Yan Sha laughed as she heard this. “Sister, I can’t believe that I hear you say this that you want to share me with others and even outsiders. If the Duke would hear of this I’m sure he would be positively shocked. He would say that someone has stolen away his beloved concubine sun and replaced her with a pious monk. He would look all around the moon for you until he found you right at home where he left you. But truthfully, sister, business is not for me. I could never keep all of the older matrons happy with tinctures. It would be a lot more talking than simply giving medicine.” “Well then you can be in all of their good graces and then they will want to invite us to all of the good gatherings and food tastings. Who is to know what nice things that they will share with us then?” “
“What kind of school are we talking about, your highness. I have definitely never heard of it. Whom is this legendary teacher? But on second thought I would say he has been brutal to you. Your back is full of burns and scars and marks. It doesn't sound like a place where a delicate princess should be sent, even if you are the spare.” “I am not one who has been confined to private quarters like my sister all of her life. One sibling must learn of the outside world to keep the other safe while ruling. It is my duty to protect her and guard the line in front of our house. But these is explained in the words of men, I guard the land so I may have a place to go home to and a bed to sleep on and a sister whom I know will raise my children if I am to die first.” “If you say it in this way
The person was walking upside down now and Yan Sha wondered how that could be. Then she realized that the ground was by her face. She struggled listlessly as the person dragged her away and out of sight. The scene that she had left behind was strange as there was just cloth and bones that were swept away by the morning sweepers as they wondered why this area of town had gotten so dusty. The local magistrates guessed all that ash had come from fires. Not knowing the whole area was hallowed with human remains. =\\= Yan Sha spat up black phlegm again and she coughed to clear her throat. No matter how much she coughed her throat continued to burn until she just gave up that she had gotten used to it that there was no point trying anymore.
Ning Zhuo then turned and saw a shadow in his study. He strutted back to find his bookcases trembling. His movements to fix everything were quick. Maids immediately rushed behind him and one poked him, “Crown prince, your man from Jungpi has arrived to see you.” Yan Sha froze as she sat on the roof. There was a good opening to jump over the roofs but she was torn as she knew that it was incredibly difficult to get spies into this manor. She was proud of her former partner but could not stop the lick of nostalgia. She wanted to say that she knew him. Below her, Ning Zhuo replied. “Oh good. Send him into my study. I want to hear what he has to say immediately.”
