Its not selfish to put yourself first when you create your life. When you take time for yourself you make everything better.
~Tom Anderson
My eyes flattered open at the sound of my alarm clock ringing and with a groan I shut it off and forced myself out of bed into the bathroom.
With a sigh I grabbed a scrunchie and tied my hair into a bun so it wouldn't get soaked while I took a shower. Stripping out of my pyjamas I got into the shower cubicle and twisted the tap letting the warm water fall on my body.
After the shower I got out, wrapped my body in a towel and dried myself before I went to the sink and brushed my teeth.
"Good morning sunshine." I greeted myself as I stated at my reflection in the mirror above the sink.
Going back into my room I went to the closet and started looking for what to wear.
Yes I had outfits picked out for a whole month but today was different, it was a weekend but not just any normal weekend, my grandparents were having the family get together they held every few months. My mother and I alongside most of my extended family were expected to attend.
"Why aren't you done yet." My mother frowned looking at my body, I was dressed in a white floral knee-length dress and black cardigan.
"I'm done." I stated at her confused.
"That's what you're wearing." She snarled. "Move." She pushed me to the side and invaded my closet. "You can't to anything right."
"I'm sorry." I sighed looking at the ground.
"Here wear this." She tossed a pair of dark jeans and a tan turtle neck sweater. "And hurry up, I don't want to miss my flight because of you."
With that she walked out.
I quickly slipped into the clothes and a pair of white converse before grabbing my backpack and weekender bag that I had packed 2 nights before and leaving my room.
"Let's go." My mother ordered when I reached the bottom of the stairs where she stood staring at her phone intensely.
Arnold grabbed my luggage as my mother's and walked through the front door.
I was kind of hungry because I had gone to bed on an empty stomach last night so I quickly dashed to the kitchen and grabbed some snacks before going to the car and getting in.
"Your chewing is irritating." My mother snapped with a glare.
"Sorry." I sighed putting away the snacks.
"That's all you can do, apologize." She gained and went back to her phone.
Whenever we had this family trip my mother always got worked up and ended up unleashing her anger on me, I understood that my grandparents demanded alot from her and she let them down when she got pregnant with me but that wasn't my fault.
She hated being reminded of her mistakes but no one, especially her siblings would give the subject a rest, especially when I was around. I was the salt being rubbed into her wounds.
Reaching the airport we got onto the plane. Thankfully our seats where different, hers was 3 seats in front of mine and I couldn't be any happier. It was a 6 hour flight and I needed to have some peace of mind before I reached my place of torment.
Taking my seat I got comfortable and plugged in my iPods and my favourite song filled my ears. Removing the snacks I had packed earlier I munched on them and read my book.
'PEACE'
I whispered to myself.
The six hours flight came to an end quicker than I wanted and I was back in the car with my mother.
"Are you ok?" I asked her, she looked very uneasy and I understood why, she always got like that when it came to my grandparents.
"Yes, do I look sick?" She asked trying to calm herself.
"It's going to be ok, it's just 2 days." I squeezed her hand offering some comfort.
"Right." She nodded. "You should stay out of trouble."
"Yes ma'am." I nod.
"Good, we can't have your grandparents-"
"Mum I know." I told her. She gave me this lecture every single time we had these gathering, at this point I had mastered what she would say word for word.
"I hope so." She huffed and turned her head looking out the window.
I did the same but our hands remained intertwined. In as much as she would snap at me for no reason, I was the only one who understood how she felt when it came to her family because I experienced it too. She was some sort of comfort for me and I was hers as well.
"We're here." My mother breathed out as the Uber came to a halt in my grandparents driveway.
"Yay." I frowned taking a deep breath and getting out of the car.
Still standing by the car door I looked at the lavish compound, I hadn't been here in months and the place looked better than before, with the green grass looking greener than ever and blossoming flowers.
"Lyra." My mother whisper yelled snapping me back to reality. "This is not the the time or place for you to be zoning out."
"Sorry." I sighed grabbing my bag from the polite driver and mumbling a thank you.
I contemplated getting back into the Uber and getting as far away as I could from my mother's family but the second the front door opened reviling my grandparents I knew it was too late for that, I had no choice but to take all the hate they would dish out.
"Patricia." My grandmother greeted walking down the steps with my grandfather help.
"Mother." My mother responded with a fake smile. "Father."
My eyes followed the Uber as it drove out the compound and I couldn't help but feel my heart sink when the black gate closed shut. I was in prison.
"Lyra!" My mother snapped lowly tagging on my arm.
Blinking I turned my attention to them.
"I see concentration I still a problem for you." My grandfather taunted.
"Hello grandfather." I responded with a smile. "Grandmother."
"Hello Lyra." She looked at me from head to toe, taking in my appearance. "Why don't you come in, everyone is already here."
"You are the last ones to arrive, as usual." Grandfather commented lowly.
"Our flight got delayed a little." My mother explained.
"It always does." He spoke lowly but we heard him.
Ignoring the comment we went inside and I was shown to the room I used whenever we were here.
"Look who decided to show this time." My cousin Ruby teased.
"Didn't get chicken pox this time." My other cousin Marie added and the two burst out laughing.
"Hi." I forced a smile and decided to ignore their comments.
Moving to my side of the room, which I shared with them as well as my other cousin Sera, I placed my bags on the single bed spread with blush pink sheets and a matching comforter and pillows.
Taking off the converse on my feet I removed my Crocs and slid them on before unpacking my things and packing them in the drawers beside my bed.
"Hi Lyra." Sera waved standing at the door.
"Hey." I responded before getting comfortable on my bed. It was smaller than the bed I had back home but still comfortable.
Marie, Sera and Ruby left the room leaving me to some peace and quiet. I never liked any of my cousins, they always taunted and teased me the entire time we were on these family gatherings and no one could defend me.
After what seemed like forever, I was called down for lunch.
Not wanting to get yelled at I rushed to the huge dinning room and took a seat at the table between my male cousin. As always my grandmother had a buffet prepared.
My grandparents were very wealthy people and so were their kids, my mother included.
"Let's say grace." My grandfather announced and we all interlinked put hands.
He gave a short prayer and everyone dag in.
"You need to eat more, you look malnourished, it's embarrassing." My grandmother taunted me.
"Yeah, don't you feed her Patricia." My mother's only sister, Aunt Greta mocked my mother.
"What would you expect when she inherited most of her father's genes." Uncle Benjamin, their brother added.
"I told her not to get involved with that boy." My grandfather chimed in. "But no she never listened, now look at what she's stuck with." He glanced at me bitterly.
'This is going to be a long weekend.' I frowned already tired.
The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.~Dolly PartonAbsolutely no words could explain the joy I felt when the Uber drove out of my grandparent’s yard. The weekend felt like eternity in hell, especially with all the demeaning comments they made about me and how my father was always a topic of discussion during every meal.“I’ll call you when we land.” My mother spoke into the phone. She had been talking on phone since we got into the Uber, by the attitude she was showing towards me I could tell she was angry at me.“Mum we’re here.” I told her when the car parked.“I have eyes, I can see that.” She responded in a sharp tone.Sighing I got out of the car and grabbed my bags. We did all the necessary procedures before boarding the plane and just like always she sat 4 rows away from me, I should have been happy about that but the thought that my mother didn’t even care to see if I was alright after the I had a flare up yesterday. At the age of 5 I was
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. ~Steve Jobs It was Monday and just as I had hoped the rush had cleared on most parts of my body except for my face but it was not as bad as before, I could hide my face with a mask. My mother an Arnold dropped me off at school and I walked into the premises going straight to my locker so I could get the books I needed for the first 3 periods. “Hey hot stuff.” Marcus grinned slamming my locker shut. If I hadn’t moved away quickly he would have hurt my hand. “Ooh she’s quick.” One of the guys he was with teased. “Leave me alone.” I told them. “What will you do if we don’t?” He taunted pushing me against the metal locker. My back hit the locker with a lot of impact and I knew it was going to leave a mark. “What, can’t speak anymore.” He taunted coming closer. “Leave her alone you jerks!” A feminine voice growled from behind
The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.~Nelson MandelaWe went to a small coffee shop close to the school because Raphael demanded he wanted coffee before we could start our tutorial session and we ended up deciding to have it from there instead because it was quiet.“Your black iced coffee and blueberry muffin.” The waitress said in a flirty tone while placing the cup and plate before Raphael. “And your strawberry green smoothie.” She put my cup in front of me.“Thanks.” I mumbled and put the straw in my mouth sucking the content in the cup.“Do you need anything else?” The waitress asked leaning towards Raphael.“Yeah, your number.” He smirked in response making her blush profusely. With a big grin she leaned over grabbing the smart phone in his hands and put in her number on it.“Text me.” She winked walking away.“Oh I will.” He smiled licking his lips and rubbing his hands together.“You’re disgusting.” I gagged.“Says the girl d
You become what you think.~Earl Nightingale As always, the weekend had gone by very slowly, but on the bright side I didn’t have to go to the hospital and get needles poked in my skin or have any intense flare-ups, the worst I had to encounter was the rush on my face which I had worked so hard to have cleared and well as the aching in my joints, overall, I had quite a good weekend. It was Monday and I was so excited to get out of the house, getting up at the sound of my alarm, I got out of bed. I didn’t know why I kept my alarm because having had the same routine for years, my mind was accustom to doing everything I was supposed to at the set time without having to check the clock, I just knew what and when I had to do things, it had become a norm.Entering the bathroom, I stared at my reflection in the mirror set above the sink on the door of the vanity cabinet and relief filled my lungs, the red spots on my face had cleared out and it looked normal, pale but normal. With a smile o
Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward finding the answer ~Dennnis WaitleyAs planned, immediately the bell indicating the end of first period went off, I handed in my quiz answer sheet before grabbing my things and going to the library where I found Raphael leaning against the wall beside the entrance. His back was against the wall and with hands shoved in his pocket and iPod in his ears, the corner of my lips tugged into a small smile as I admired the man before me, he was very handsome, with midnight black hair that complemented his perfectly shaped face, dark lips and hazel eyes.“Hey.” I tapped his arm when I was in his reach.“You are late.” He grumbled while shooting me a glare.“Ungrateful, I’m skipping class for you and that’s all you can tell me.” I glared back. “I’m going back to class.”“Relax Lyra.” He held onto my hand before I made an attempt to walk away. “I’m sorry.”That was a first, from the time we
To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others ~Anthony Robbins Getting through the weekend had been very tough for me, no sooner had I gotten home from school that I got another flare up and I had to be rushed to the hospital. The doctor said the flare up had occurred because of something I had taken earlier and that made my mother furious, she had warned me on several occasions that I shouldn’t take anything I knew was a hazard to my health but here I was doing the opposite and that was not only inconveniencing my life but hers as well. She went on and on for hours on how I was being irresponsible and that was taking a toll on her work and social life. She already had to stay away from work to take care of me when I had been admitted and now this. “I’m sorry mum.” I mumbled. “Your apology isn’t enough!” She exclaimed. “You need to be more careful, you’r

Just like me she clearly wasn’t expecting to see them anytime soon, especially after what had happened while on the family trip.“Won’t you give your mother a hug?” My grandmother spoke immediately after getting out of the car.“Mother.” My mother walked up to her parents and gave them quick hugs. My feet stayed glued to the spot I was in. “What are you-”“Don’t star with your interrogation sessions just yet Patricia.” My grandfather told her. “We’ve had a long flight at least let us settle first.”“Sorry father.” She took a step back.My grandparents ordered their driver with Arnold’s help to remove their bags out of the car into the house while my mother asked the house helps to thoroughly clean the room they used whenever they were h
“The real lover is a man who can thrill you by kissing your forehead or smiling into your eyes or just staring into space.”– Marilyn Monroe"What kind of A+ student skips lessons?" Raphael's voice reached my ears and I internally groaned, I wanted to be left alone. "Leave her alone." Emilia warned before opening her arms in an attempt to give me a hug but I was quick to move away. "Please don't touch me." I mumbled pulling onto the long sleeves of the grey and black hoodie I had worn, it was quite warm outside but because of the terrible red patches on my skin I had to cover myself up. She looked hurt by my words but still took a step away from me and thankfully didn't speak about it. "Isn't someone in a mood?" Raphael commented. "A sour one at that." Leo spoke. "Come on babe, she clearly doesn't want you here." He added while glaring at me. "It’s great to see that you're alright now." She told me with a small smile. "I'll see you around." With that she waved and her and Leo w
When you're doing the work you're meant to do, it feels right and every day is a bonus, regardless of what you're getting paid. ~Oprah WinfreyLyra It was strange, everything was strange, from how he ignored the constant calls to his expression when he went away to answer it and the jovial expression he held upon returning. I thought my family had bipolar people but I was wrong, Raphael Vicario topped the list. After escorting me to the car like he always did, I expected him to call me later in the night―like always. I anticipated his call but I never came, after all the effort he had undertaken to get a hold of me I thought he would call, Bria did to but he never did, maybe he was done with me.Shifting my focus from Raphael to the upcoming makeup test, I studied hard, I even woke up extra early just to patch up on anything I had missed while I studied the previous nights. When it was almost time for school, I took a quick shower and dressed up.◘“I’m sorry I’m late.” I apologize
He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. ~Muhammad AliRaphael “What is this?” My stepmother growled looking between me and the guard that carried my unconscious brother.“Is the doctor here yet?” I asked one of the house helps and she nodded. “Good, have him set up in his room.”“Raphael!” Stepmother growled angered by my decision to ignore her.“Also,” I continued to converse with the young help. “Have the chef prepare something for him to eat when he wakes up.”“Raphael Oliver Vic-”“Can you not take a hint lady!” I snapped. “Do I need to spell it out that I’m ignoring you, is that what it will take for you to understand.”She was taken back by my reaction, I never raised my voice and that shocked her.“You, take him to his room.” I instructed the guard who nodded curtly before taking to the staircase.Rotating my shoulder blades, I made my way to the kitchen, I thought after yelling I would be left alone be left alone but no, the heels cluck
You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do. ~Henry FordRaphael Replacing the navy shift on my body with a black one, I changed my shoes and added a jacket before moving to grab two large duffle bags and stuffing them with paper and a few dollar notes on the top to make it see as though they where filled entirely with money.I had waited until my tutorial session with Lyra was over and she had safely gotten into the car before making my way to Leo’s, he had everything in place and I had less than an hour to rescue my stupid brother.“Crates are in.” Leo told me as he walked into the room.“Thanks.” I nodded zipping up the last bag and dropping it to the ground. “If you have something to say just come out with it already.” I grumbled.Since I got here he had been watching me intensely, he only ever did that if he had something to say and after this damn rescue mission, I was not going to be in the mood to have a conversation.“I noticed you and Lyra.” He said quietly.“
A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others. ~Ayn RandRaphael She hit me, Lyra Colburn had just balled her small hand into a fist and hit my chest. It did not hit hard enough for it to hurt or leave a mark but it was enough to make me notice. When I averted my gaze from her little fists to her face, I noticed her entire demeanor had changed, she was no longer uneasy and her eyes where calm despite her best efforts to glare at me.“Did you just hit me?” I smirked finding her small action amusing.“Yes.” She raised her fist and hit my chest again twice.“I will report you for assault.” I suppressed my grin.“Go ahead.” She scoffed hitting me again. “Don’t you ever threaten me or Bria.” “Bria?” Grabbing her arm and holding it in place. I repeated the name confused as to who she was talking about.“Yes, the girl you threatened.” She stated pulling her arm away.“Clarify, I threaten a lot of people you know.” It came out as a joke but it was t
Everyone can master a grief but he that has it. ~William ShakespeareRaphael“Glad people with emergencies could join us.” Jasmine’s voice came sharp and taunting as her eyes trained on Lyra who in turn drew a deep breath. Her fingers flew to the hem of the cute peach sweater she had on that went really well with the soft tone of her skin and the rest of her outfit which consisted of a dark jeans, a white button down―I assumed based on the collar and the bottom that peaked out of the sweater and a pair of converse. Even though her outfit was basic and simple, it looked perfect on her―everything did.“Leave her alone.” Leo grumbled beating me to it. He held an irritated expression at Jasmine’s words to Lyra.“I was just-”“Leave her alone.” He repeated this time with more authority than the last.“Alright, geez, y’all are coming to her rescue as though I’ve even attacked her.” She scoffed after Leo had interrupted her.“You are picking unnecessary fights Jasmine.” Pedro chimed in, cle

Character is what you are in the dark. ~UnknownLyra It had been a week and so far so good, I had managed to steer clear from Raphael and any trouble that came with him―I couldn’t find myself getting attached to him, not now, I needed to focus on school, he was a distraction, after a careful analysis and receiving my B+ graded paper, I knew my mother was right, I paid little no concentration on my school work since he had come into my life and the big letter marked in red on my answer sheet proved that.Every time I saw him in school or when he called my heart could skip a beat. I wanted to speak to him, to go back to having our late night conversations but I couldn’t, especially not after my encounter with that girl, he was taken―had a girlfriend that was willing to fight tooth and nail for him and I was never the type to ruin people’s relationships hence, I was going to stay away from him.“Are you awake?” Bria asked quietly shutting the door to the study.“Yes, I am.” I nodded ra
The pursuit of truth will set you free even if you never catch up with it. ~Clarence DarrowRaphael It had been a good weekend, one I hadn’t experienced in the longest time and it was all because of one person. Small as she was, she held so much power and could turn even the shittest of days into the best with only her words.Over the past 3 days we had spoken, I found myself smiling and chuckling at memories of our late night conversations that would flash in my mind every now and then. I rarely smiled or was happy to talk to someone the way I did Lyra.Lyra Colburn, without even knowing it was slowly breaking down every wall I had built up and melting away the ice around my heart, she made me feel emotions I had trained myself never to experience and I had been doing a great job until now. This girl had me excited to go to school, the only reasons I ever did attend school were Leo and Emilia, they made it worth sitting in a classroom for hours listening to a teacher blubber about
A promise made is a debt unpaid. ~Robert W. ServiceRaphael After spending the rest of my day with Lyra, I couldn’t seem to get enough of her. Her presence brought a certain calm to my life and I wanted to feel that at all times. Especially after getting back to my parents― my father and biological mother at each other’s throats as my stepmother tried to step in and my older sister quietly watched them sipping on her margarita, it was never too early to be drinking in our household.“There you are.” My sister announced and all eyes snapped to me.Great, just what I needed, I knew my sister had probably been trying to get away from our parents and whatever where arguing about but had failed miserably, but now that I was here, she had her opportunity and was not going to let it slip away, it was always like this.“Raphael, where have you been?” My mother went straight to scolding.Unlike most parents and children, mine and I rarely shared pleasantries when we met, it was always some s
