Chapter 2

I had been arrested under suspicion of murder. The video of my arrest had gone viral online, and several media and bot accounts took the opportunity to make the incident blow up more.

My personal details had been dug up, and my company had issued a statement indicating that I was fired. I'd been made out to be some evil monster; everyone had been out for my blood.

Despite the matter still being under investigation, the online community had already declared me dead to society. So, I'd laid in a bathtub and slashed my wrists to end my life.

My life had flowed away with the blood, but I still hadn't understood why Evelyn had taken her life. She'd been so excited for the child's birth!

Now that I'd been reborn, I wanted to discover the truth and reveal it to the world. Since I'd prepared Evelyn's meal, this meant Mom and Chris were the only ones who could've drugged the food.

Evelyn cared about her baby so much that it was more likely than not that she'd been forced or tricked into taking the medication. So, I stopped Mom before she could leave the house to bring the food to Evelyn.

I said, "It's hot outside, Mom. How about you rest at home while I take the food over?"

Mom gladly accepted my offer, her expression completely natural. She praised me once more before returning to her bedroom.

I headed downstairs and got into the car. Before driving off, I scoured every inch of the car but didn't find any trace of any abortion pills. However, in my past life, the police had found it in my car. How had that happened?

I couldn't figure it out but didn't dare delay any longer. So, I drove off. When I arrived at my new place, I saw Evelyn watching TV. She was delighted to see me.

"I'm so happy to see you've come in person today, Win! What have you prepared for me this time? I bet it tastes great!" She tottered toward me, her belly swollen.

I laid out the food, letting the aroma waft into her nostrils. She said, "It smells amazing! You're such a great cook, Win. I feel really bad about you having to spend so much time on me, though."

My heart softened when I saw her eating so happily. I asked, "Has Chris dropped by today? You've been down with a slight cold these few days, right? Have you taken any medication?"

Evelyn mumbled around her food, "He was busy with a client last night. He'll probably only come over in the evening. Also, I wouldn't dare take any medication now. I would be devastated if anything were to go wrong with the baby."

She looked normal for now. I didn't see any bruises on her limbs, which I could see because she wore a short-sleeved T-shirt and shorts.

As she ate, I searched the house. I didn't see any opened bottles of medication aside from the vitamins she had to take.

When she was done eating, she struggled to get up so she could do the dishes. I hurriedly stopped her. "Don't move—I'll do it. Don't hurt yourself."

As I washed the dishes, Evelyn stood beside me and sang my praises. "I must've saved the planet in my past life to have gotten the life I have now, Win. Everyone loves me so much! You even allowed me to stay in your new place before giving birth. None of my girlfriends are as lucky as I am!"

She placed one hand on her belly and the other behind her waist while smiling happily. Her gaze was innocent and naive. She and I had grown up together, so I knew what a wonderful woman she was. Why would someone cause her to die such a horrible death?

My heart twisted when I recalled her broken body after she'd jumped off the building. I secretly wiped my tears while she wasn't paying attention.

Just then, I heard someone open the door. Chris entered the house. There were three hours to go before Evelyn's death.

"Hi, Winston. Were you the one who brought lunch over today? Evelyn's really got all the power now, huh? My hair would've long since gone gray with worry if you weren't preparing her meals daily." Chris held a large bouquet and a bag of fruits and desserts.

He put the things down and kissed Evelyn's cheek affectionately.

I still couldn't understand the situation. In my past life, Mom had come over to deliver the food. I'd received Chris' call after Mom had come home.

By the time I arrived at my new place, Evelyn was already lying dead on the ground. The police had arrested me before I'd had the chance to process the situation.

I tried to recall every detail of what had happened in my past life. Now that I'd been given a chance to redo this, I wouldn't want to take the blame for a crime someone else had committed.

I secretly observed Chris' every action but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. He massaged Evelyn's swollen legs and read the baby a story. He was like the textbook definition of a good husband and father.

Why had Mom praised me for caring for Evelyn before suddenly screaming at me for being a monster? Why had Chris talked about my concern for Evelyn before framing me for being abusive?

Face flushed, Chris yelled at me, "What nonsense is that? Show me the evidence! You can't make up rumors about your mom just to get away from your crimes!"The onlookers immediately split into two cliques with differing opinions. The ones who sided with me whispered, "Hey, that might be the truth. Take a better look; the twins look nothing like their mom. Could the old lady be a child trafficker?""How terrifying!
