That night, Nathaniel was having a hard time falling asleep. He kept reminiscing the surreal time they shared, not only on that moment but even after, during their training session. He had been with his fair share of ladies before, and even a sorceress that knew all sorts of potions to make things interesting, yet he had never been that fulfilled. There was just something about her and the way she surrendered to him so utterly and completely. He had noticed her honesty before, how she had never lied to him or even told him half-truths, but now he was beginning to notice her genuineness was not restricted to her words. There was not a single thing she did that was not authentic. Her body translated a kind of truth that was ancient and unmistakable, as if she were physically incapable of a dishonest reaction.

“Bree, I…” whatever explanation he was hoping to provide was cut short by the massive root that emerged from the ground and trapped him against the wall. The situation was awfully familiar, except now the branches were twice as large and she had done it without a single hint of effort. At least the training was paying off. Nate noticed she controlled the roots to such extent that he could not move a single muscle from the neck down but was left completely unharmed. He almost smiled from the thought that she was mad, but not enough to hurt him. “I will ask you some questions and you better believe I know you enough to tell w

Brianna left the cottage before the first rays of sunlight pierced her window. It took everything in her to get out of that bed, especially after the night they shared. She could still feel the light touches that rapidly evolved to desperate grasps, the soft kisses, the whispered words. One particular memory crawled into her mind just as she crossed the recently burnt land of the forest she called home.“You are beautiful, Brianna” His voice was still uneven from his recent release, specially so due to the roughness she had requested towards the end. She didn’t know she would enjoy it, but apparently having her wrists pinned by his hand above her head while he thrusted slo

Nate patted the bed hoping to bring a tiny warm body closer to him, letting out a frustrated sight when he found it cold. He stretched lazily, imagining the morning meal she might be cooking for them. He could get used to it, though he would prefer to wake up by her side to replay the indescribable events of the previous night. That was only their second time together and he was already picturing a future there, but how couldn’t he, when she had agreed to work with him for the Council? He was not sure how it worked for them, having a pair under the organization, but they could surely figure it out. They would do anything to have her by their side, he was confident of it. The lower floor

Bree found it harder to locate a spot that served her needs this time; a new village, about the size of the one she left, with a grand forest that needed tending. It used to be easy, the elements always guided her towards the next place she would reside. Granted this time she relocated before her work was done, but it was not as if it was that far from completion as well. She was sleeping in improvised shelters for the past couple of days, and her patience was beginning to fade. The day before, she thought the air finally decided to help her, directing her with soft blows towards a new path on the forest. She walked almost an entire da

The trio reached Brianna’s former cottage after a quick walk and Nate was beginning to get anxious. This part of the story was more sensitive, and any missed detail could undermine his efforts. His expression was casual and relaxed, but his heart was pounding like a racing horse inside his ribcage. They needed to believe him, otherwise not only his position within the organization would be endangered, but also his safety. Nobody hid something as powerful as Brianna from them and went unpunished. He almost believed that was the main reason he wanted them to fall for his story, but deep down he knew his major goal was to keep her out of danger. There were safer stories to tell, but they all

Lucius and Klaus stayed in the village a couple more days, sorting out the leadership change and collecting information from the few months Nate was there. There was not much to report since the village had no fighting inclination whatsoever, making him wonder why they had sent him there in the first place. Apparently, Klaus was wondering the same thing.“Boy, I will assign you to a different location. We’ll go back to the city and you will receive your new post after this week’s meeting”That was bad news. See, he had

Now that she understood the implications, she had to right her wrongs. The door to that wonderful world of possibilities was not simply opened by her. Someone was there to show her the way, and without him she would never have known. She had no idea what she had left behind, no way of telling if he was hurt, or angry, maybe both. She recognized a feeling she didn’t like but was way too honest to simply bury. She wanted him to be sad. Not because she would enjoy his suffering, not at all! But because whenever she allowed herself a second to think about him, she was miserable, and perhaps it soothed her heart to think he would feel the same. The first thing she had to do was call the eleme

Bree had been waiting for over a week now. She was so anxious, so utterly desperate in her absence of action, that she explored entire extension of the forest in the first two days. Then she made a new cottage from the ground up in less than six hours. Granted she used her recently learned skills and that allowed her to work for more than ten minutes without passing out from exhaustion, but still. Impressive work. The days were filled with both useful and useless tasks she performed mostly to keep her mind occupied, because with the slightest hint of idleness, she would spiral down the path of misery due to his absence. If she had any idea how much she would miss him, she probably would have th

  • Called by Fire   Epilogue

The camp near the southern border was perhaps one of the oldest. It lost many residents throughout the years, but still held more people than the resources could feed. The movement of the desert’s sand was the only thing indicating the passing of time on the otherwise static land. Even the strong willed eventually caved to the ruthlessness of the camp, the inevitability of its reality. It was the apex of grief, that much power constrained by the invisible shackles of danger. The self-imposed imprisonment eroded the souls of the adventurers and crushed the wishes of the dreamers.

“Allow me to shed some light into your path, my dears” The couple turned to the woman, surprised to see she was still there. Bree trusted her implicitly, but she knew Nate was still apprehensive. The anger from his drawn need was present, pulsing behind his eyes. She heard him fuming against her hair and intertwined their fingers to help him calm down. The old woman motioned them to take a sit again, and Bree took the opportunity to quickly peck Nate on the lips. It was working, the little contact she was establishi

Bree was the first to accept the situation. She was barely functional during the four days she spent with the older woman, but it was enough for her to understand she was as mysterious as she was caring.“Cassie, where should we start”“Tell me everything you know, child”Nate was beginning to catch up with the ladies.

Brianna was trying to keep herself together, but she was livid. It took her over an hour to calm Nate down enough for him to tell her the story. An hour and two punches to the wall. She felt the anger pouring out of his every word and by the end, most of it was shared between the two.She was sitting on their bed while he paced around, both trying to breath through the rage. “We need to leave” Her voice was sure, probably more that she really felt.

“So, Angel, hm?” Bree threw him an amused look while arching her left brow. He was still laying in the grass by the river after they explored each other to exhaustion. “What do you mean?”“You called me Angel”“Oh, yes. Do you like it?” He asked, eyes still closed enjoying the afternoon sun.

Nate jumped into the river like he was seeking to put out a fire. In a sense, he was, but reaching the water did nothing to calm his need. They reconnected emotionally after the near-death experience, but now he urged for her body. She had a smile that could light up any mood and when his hands reached the back of her neck, it felt like she was molded for him.“So you decided to join me after all?”

Bree and Nate left the room way too late for a morning meal, and both their stomachs were complaining when they got to the main flor of the library. Lady Cassie, as the amazing host she was, prepared them a complete meal to welcome both of them back to the world of the living. As they sat on the table of her simple home, Nate wondered again why someone with the Lady’s means and possibilities would choose such a humble life. He wanted to ask, but she was the one to break the silence.“Nathaniel, I understand you just came back from

Bree knew her routine for the past couple of days was absurd. She tried to spiral out of it, but it was impossible to control matters of the heart with a rational mind. As much as she thought ‘enough is enough’, her soul was not done yet. She had to keep searching and digging. She didn’t even have a chance to grief, despite the sadness that consumed her every move. She was not one for crying, but she knew it wasn’t healthy to bottle all those miserable feelings inside. Yet she didn’t cry. Not once. She tried to, but nothing came out, not even a dry sob.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what the hell is happening. I’ve been away for the past four days and I really need to find Bree. I need to make sure she’s safe.”Nate’s softer tone seemed to make the woman in front of him relax a bit, and he hoped it would make her slip out information on Brianna’s whereabouts. He was using all his will to contain his anger, since it did not seem to be taking him anywhere.“Oh, so you leave the poor girl after she fights a bear alone and now you need to know if s
