The walls of the café felt as if they were closing in on me. Ava’s words hung heavy in the air, each syllable weighing me down. My mind raced to process what she had said—Daniel knew about the files, and now my company was under attack. I’d expected backlash, but not like this. I thought sparing Daniel would give me a sense of control, a way to show that I wasn’t like him. But mercy had turned into a double-edged sword.
