Next day ....
Tuesday Morning
8:00pm ....
The elevator door opened and Eleanor careful looked around before she stepped outside gingerly.
She looked quite pale, her face had lost it's color, like she was carrying the burden of the whole world on her shoulders.
"Wow wow and wow!" She heard someone say behind her and she stopped in her tracks immediately, she slowly turned back to face whoever it was.
She sighed in frustration as her eyes went momentarily shut, Arthur had been the last person she wanted to see today, even though she knew she couldn't avoid seeing him.
After threatening to quit her job yesterday and she couldn't, she had no idea how to face him.
"You're here to drop your resignation letter right, since I didn't get it yesterday and you left quite early!" He said, her grip on her bag tightened, she swallowed hard as her head slowly bent to look at her knees, she bit the insides of her cheeks in embarrassment.
"I'm talking to you, answer me!" He snapped.
"I'm - I'm - I'm " she stuttered not knowing the right words to say.
"I'm - I'm - I'm , you're what!!" Arthur yelled and she flinched backwards.
# *FLASHBACK*
"Get me my coffee Eleanor!" Eleanor grumbled as she walked into her office and slammed the door shut.
"Can you imagine! Too bad someone as good-looking as that has a disgusting behavior!!"
Eleanor took out a pen from her desk, took out a plain typing paper from underneath the printer and began to write her resignation letter.
"Dear sir," she began, but there was a break in her train of thought as her phone rang.
"Mom?!" She murmured as she picked up the phone "Why would mom be calling me at this time?!" She picked up the phone and placed it in her ear.
"Eleanor, your father is at it again, this time worse!" Her mother said immediately she picked up the call.
"What do you mean?!" She asked as she turned her chair to face the louvers
"The tumor grew bigger and he's gone unconscious!" Eleanor abruptly stood up from her chair,
"I'll be right there!" She said, carelessly dropped her phone in her bag, grabbed it and dashed out of the office, without taking permission of any sort from anyone, she raced down the staircase, flagged down a taxi and headed for the hospital.
Eleanor's heart raced as she sat in the back of the taxi, her mind consumed with worry for her father. She tried to push away the image of him lying in a hospital bed, unconscious and helpless. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him.
Her father had been battling brain cancer for months now, and she had thought he was getting better. But now, hearing her mother's frantic voice on the phone, she realized that things were much worse than she had thought
As the taxi pulled up outside the hospital, Eleanor threw some money at the driver and jumped out, racing towards the entrance. She pushed past people, her eyes frantically scanning the faces of the doctors and nurses rushing past her.
Finally, she spotted her mother standing outside a hospital room, her face twisted with worry. "Mom, what's happening? How is he?" Eleanor gasped as she reached her.
"He's still unconscious, they're doing all they can," her mother replied, her voice shaking with emotion. "It's just a waiting game now."
Eleanor's heart sank. She felt helpless, not knowing what to do or say. She took her mother's hand and they sat in silence, waiting for any news.
Hours passed by and finally, a doctor emerged from the room. Eleanor's heart raced as she stood up, her mother's hand still tightly in hers.
"I'm sorry," the doctor said, his voice low. "We did all we could, but the tumor was too aggressive. I'm afraid he didn't make it."
Eleanor felt the world around her come crashing down. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her father, the man who had always been there for her, was gone.
As she and her mother wept, Eleanor couldn't help but think of the petty argument she had had with her boss just hours earlier. She realized how insignificant it was in the grand scheme of things. Life was too short to waste time on trivial matters.
Reality sort of dawned on her again, her father was their family's largest breadwinner, quitting her job means definitely setting them up for a very difficult life after his death.
She thought about what she had said to her boss and her tears intensified, she could only hope and pray that God hears her prayers through her tears and make Arthur still accept her.
There and then she made a promise to herself to never let Arthur petty actions get in the way of what was truly important.
Atleast he was right, people like her depends on people like him to survive and navigate their ways through the world, if he accepts her back in the company, she was determined to take in all of his bullshit!.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
"Are you even listening to what I'm saying?!" Arthur snapped, Eleanor shook as she slowly looked up at him, a streak of tears fell down her face and she wiped it off immediately.
"No" she whispered.
"There's no resignation letter!" She whispered.
"I'm so sorry for talking back at you rudely yesterday,"
"It was so impolite and thoughtless of me, I shouldn't have done that!" She murmured and bowed in front of him.
Arthur's face twisted into a look of mischievous triumph as he watched Eleanor apologize. His lips curled into a smirk, and his eyes glittered with a hint of malice. He knew that he had her right where he wanted her.
Eleanor, for her part, looked down at her feet, unable to meet Arthur's gaze. She knew that she had been backed into a corner, forced to apologize for something that she had not even done. But she was too tired to argue. Too tired to fight.
Arthur cleared his throat and stepped forward, menacingly close to her.
"That's better," he said, his voice low and menacing. "I thought you might be trying to pull a fast one on me. But it seems that you're not quite as clever as you think you are."
Eleanor gritted her teeth, feeling a surge of anger rise within her. But she bit back her retort, knowing that it would only make things worse. Instead, she simply nodded, mutely acknowledging Arthur's victory.
Arthur chuckled, a dark sound that echoed through the hallway. "You know," he said, leaning even closer to her, "I almost feel sorry for you. You really don't stand a chance against me."
Eleanor felt her face grow hot with anger and humiliation. She wanted to lash out at Arthur, to tell him that he was wrong. But she knew that it would be pointless. Arthur was too smug, too confident in his own superiority.
So instead, she simply nodded, hoping that Arthur would get bored and leave her alone. But she knew that he wouldn't. Not until he had thoroughly broken her spirit.
"However for ever action, there's an equal and corresponding reaction!" He continued as he slowly stepped away from her and placed his hands in his pocket.
"For what you did yesterday, there's no going scot free!" He said and she nodded slowly.
"I understand, I'll do whatever you ask of me!" She stuttered.
"You don't have a choice!"
"Come to my office after work!" He said and with that, he turned around and walked away leaving Eleanor to stare at his retreating figure in anguish.
"Bestie?!" She heard someone whisper behind her and she slowly turned to see Tyler- her work bestie behind her.
They had met here at their place of work and over time they had become eachother's best friend.
"Are you okay?!" He asked as she slowly turned to him.
"Oh Tyler!" She wailed as she bursted out in fresh tears, and pulled him to a tight hug, her tears falling carelessly onto his shirt.
"I lost my Dad!" She kept whimpering repeatedly.
After work ....
4:30 pm ...
Eleanor stood tiredly in her chair and stretched out, she could hear her bones pop as she stretched.
"Eleanor! My office now!" She suddenly heard through the intercom she had with Arthur's office.
Throughout the day as she rushed to get her job done, she was looking forward to going home, she had completely forgotten that she still had a commitment with Arthur.
She quickly, arranged her dress and her table, picked up her bags, locked everything she needed to lock and rushed out towards Arthur's office.
"Let's go!" He said as she walked into his office, throwing his bag at her.
"Ahnn!" She groaned as she caught the bag struggling to make sure it doesn't fall to the floor.
"Where are we going?!" She asked as she rushed behind him. He simply brought out his sunshades and put them on, she swallowed her words and took that as a cue to not question him further.
Several minutes later, they were at his house, Eleanor slowly stepped out of the car, wondering why on earth he would bring her to his house!.
What exactly was the connection between her job and his house, she couldn't help but wonder.
"You would go over to the back of the house, fetch water there and wash all of these cars!" He said breaking her way from her train of thought.
Her eyes widened as she looked at the cars in the garage, there were three of them and she slowly turned to look at him.
"What are you waiting for!!" He asked as he snatched his bag from her and headed inside.
"You will wash all three today, so the earlier you start, the better for you!"
1hour later ....
Eleanor wiped the tears that had just fallen down her face as she scrubbed the metal outer feature of the car, she began with taking out the foot mats inside, and Washing them, now she was on the second car, scrubbing it to make sure it was shiny.
Life hadn't even given a break or a pause to mourn her dad. Right now she was supposed to be by her mom, helping her to cope with their huge family loss, because she knew her brother wouldn't, that's if he is even aware their father had died.
But here she was doing something that wasn't even in her job description.
Life was very had for her and she almost couldn't take it.
She heard the door suddenly open and she looked up towards the entrance to see Arthur walking out, his footsteps depicting deep anger and his eyes bloodshot red.
Immediately he got to her, he grabbed her hair tightly and slammed it against the window of his car.
"You slut!" He seethed.
Although the glass didn't shatter but her head bursted out in blood.
She slowly raised her hands to her face as she felt a warm liquid slosh down her face, she looked at it and as soon as she saw it was blood, she turned to look at Arthur as tears fell down her face.
"What did I ... " She murmured almost inaudibly and before she could complete her statement, her legs gave way and she fell to the floor.
Eleanor slowly opened her eyes and the first pair of eyes she met were Arthur's piercing brown eyes."Eleanor!" Her mom called immediately as she ran towards her and slowly placed her hands on her head, Eleanor hissed in pain and Racheal- her Mom slowly removed her hands,"Sorry dear," she whispered."Huh huh," Arthur cleared his throat and they both turned to look at him.He stared at him with disdain and utter disgust, as far as he was concerned they were both just pretending.Just like Eleanor did to win his dad over, but the pretence couldn't just work on him."Arthur, why did you do this to me?!" Eleanor whispered, rudely interrupting his thoughts."You have no right to question me!" Arthur snapped."You should actually..." Racheal began and Arthur raised his hands to her immediately and shut her up."I have absolutely nothing to say to you," he said curtly."It's you I have business with," he whispered as he moved closer to Eleanor's bed."What's this sneaky pictures you have wi
"My son will definitely not ruin any company!""And you shouldn't speak to him in that manner because of your little poverty alleviation scheme!" Penelope, Arthur's mom and Marshall's wife, said as she walked into the house and slammed the door shut."What the hell is wrong with you Marshall,""Screaming on top of your voice?! I could hear your every word since I stepped out of the car!""What is ever that serious!" She asked as she dropped her bag in the chair."I see where he got the phrase, poverty alleviation scheme from, I should have known it was from you!" Marshall snapped."Yes?! Is it a lie?!""He is your son Marshall and you should be on his side always, not siding with a random slum citizen!""I loathe the day you met her!""You know me too well Penelope! I won't be a party to Arthur's stupid acts!""Instead of you to tell him his bad behaviors you keep indulging him!""You made him this spoilt Penelope! You're ruining his life!" Marshall growled."Don't you ever dare!," Pe
"You shouldn't just always let him have his way," Racheal said turning to face Eleanor."He's the head of the house now right," Eleanor whispered in reply and she shook her head."Well he hasn't behaved well enough to deserve that title !" Racheal rebuffed and Eleanor forced a smile."It's fine Mom, I could have actually taken care of the payment for space till he was ready,""Nobody is taking care of anything!" She replied."We'll bury your father this Friday and this Friday it is!""Okay Mom, I just didn't want you guys to argue again,""It's pretty much what you guys do every single time you see, he ends up leaving angrily,""And if there's one thing dad's death taught me, it's that this life is incredibly short, and we never can tell when we won't just see someone forever again," she said and Racheal nodded slowly."You're right," she whispered."But your brother just knows how to push my angry buttons," she lamented."I know, you can just try to talk things over and be a little m
"Is there suddenly a comedy show in this class!" Someone said and they both looked up to see Olivia standing in front of them."Olivia can you please just go away, I'm in no mood for your tantrums today!" Isabella replied and Olivia scoffed."You never smile and all of a sudden you just start giggling over nothing," Olivia continued ignoring her initial statement."I believe you're not blind Olivia and you can see I'm in a conversation with someone!""If you think I'm giggling over nothing then you should have your eyes checked!" "No you're just a piece of trash that would throw herself at any male she comes across,""Excuse me! , you have no rights whatsoever to talk to her like that!" Finn imputed immediately."Oh please, you shouldn't be sitting with someone like her, she's too despicable!" Olivia spat."And who the hell are you to tell me who I should be sitting with,""This is your first and final year in liberty high Finn, you should pick your sides carefully and wisely,""And
Arthur's Apartment....Later that night ......"Arghh!""Instant noodles tonight again!" Arthur murmured as he slammed the freezer door shut and walked towards the dinning table. He pulled his MacBook closer and opened it,"This girl has still not sent this file," he murmured with a small frustrated sigh.He angrily stood up and walked upstairs to get his phone."They won't do what they're supposed to do and when I react I'm the bad person!" He muttered as he picked up his phone and headed towards the dinning again. He dialled Eleanor's number as he took his seat back and waiting impatiently for her to pick up the call."Why have I still not gotten the files I asked for?!" He asked immediately she picked up the call."Oh I'm sorry, I'll do that now " She said immediately."So you forgot is that it?! Did I pay you to forget about your job?!" "I'm sorry, I'm still at the hospital remember, I just had my Mom bring my Macbook over," She said and he hissed as he rolled his eyes."All I he
Next day ....Thursday 8:00am ...Wilson Corporation Headquarters Marshall cleared his throat lightly as he stepped out of the elevator, he slowly adjusted his tie on his well tailored suit.As he straightened his tie, the fabric pulled taut across his broad chest and toned torso. He stood at an impressive six feet tall, with broad shoulders and a lean, athletic build. His suit hugged his frame in all the right places. His face was just quite as we remembered it! But a little bit more matured and more manly, he still had his sharp, angular features that spoke of confidence and determination. His jawline was chiseled, and his cheekbones were prominent, creating a sculpted look that was both imposing and attractive. His eyes were a piercing blue, with a hint of steel in their gaze that commanded respect. His forehead was smooth and unlined, and his hair was a well-groomed salt-and-pepper color, and even in his early old age he was still slaying looks!. It was quite obvious where Arthu
That same day ... Liberty High ... Closing hour .... "Isabella," Finn called as he walked up to her locker, she was trying to sort out her books and she didn't even react to her name or behave like she was being called. "Isabella, you can't tell me you haven't heard me call your name all day!" He said sighing frustratingly as he stood beside her. "Finn, do you happen to know me from somewhere before you came to this school," "If you do , can you please juggle my memory because I don't seem to remember," "We haven't met before," he replied, his brows creased in confusion. "Exactly! That's my point," "Why then would you not leave me the hell alone!" "Only yesterday we began talking, I got in trouble and detention," "This is pretty much not what I want for my final year as a high schooler!" "It would be totally unheard of that I'd loose all the reputation I've gathered in the last four years because of a guy," "Thank you for helping with my speech," "But Olivia she really wa
Next day .....Friday Morning....Dew droplets of rain fell on the ground as a small crowd gathered in front of Mr Smith - Eleanor's father's grave. They sang hymn of praises toGod and there after hymn for the departed soul.Immediately they were done singing, the pastor in charge stepped forward to and asked Eleanor to read a scripture in the bible, on which he was going to take his preaching from.Eleanor was dressed in a black long silk dress and her head was wrapped in a black scarf and a shawl draped over it, she stood on her mom left hand side who was also dressed in a back dress and her brother Aiden stood by Racheal's right hand side, he was wearing a dark sunshade as he stared at the coffin."Today we've gathered here, for the final burial of our Brother, Jayden Smith, we love him but God loves him more,""And we're quite sure that he was called home by God, his time here on earth with us was up and there's nothing that could have helped it,"He went on and on to say how he c
Author’s POVOne year Later. Isabella stepped out of her room, her heart heavy with thoughts of her mother, today makes it one year since she was sentenced to life imprisonment. After everything that happened they had moved to a small apartment and led a much more quiet life. Thankfully she was already done with high school. Her, her boyfriend and bestfriend gained admission into the same school and will be leaving in a few days. She looked forward to it enthusiastically. She paused briefly in the hallway when she saw her father, Marshall, sitting on the couch with Matilda beside him. They looked so comfortable together, Matilda’s hand resting lightly on his arm, and the sight made Isabella’s stomach churn. The fact that Matilda lived in her own mansion did not stop their house from being her second home and she was there almost everytime. She knew she should be used to it by now—her father had moved on. But every time she saw Matilda in their home, it felt like a slap to her face.
Arthur. Meanwhile. The second we left the restaurant, my world felt like it had cracked open. My chest tightened with every breath, and the weight of the man’s words echoed endlessly in my mind. "My son."It didn’t make sense. None of it did. How could the man standing before me be my father? How could my mother have kept this from me? Lied to me every day of my life. From the look of things my dad was equally as shocked, she played the both of us.Eleanor squeezed my hand gently as we walked aimlessly, far away from the restaurant. I could tell she wanted to say something comforting, but what could anyone say to fix this mess? I didn’t want to hear the truth. Not from anybody."Arthur... do you want to talk about it?" Eleanor's voice was soft, like she was afraid I'd shatter if she pressed too hard. I shook my head. "Not now." We found a park bench and sat down. The late afternoon heat didn’t help; my shirt clung to me, soaked with sweat from everything that had just happened
Few hours Later.Eleanor.“We’re not going to the cafeteria?!” I asked as we walked into the elevator and he pressed on the ground floor, he slowly turned to me and shook his head slowly.“Ofcourse not,”“I’m treating my baby, to the best cheese in town,” he said to me, my face lit up in excitement immediately.“Ouuuuu, as tasty as Paris Comte?!” I asked snuggling closer to him, he turned to look at me and chuckled lightly. “I can’t give you my word on that though,” he said and we shared a laugh, ofcourse American cheese can beat Paris cheese, no matter who makes it. “Also my Dad wanted to meet with us, he said he has something to say,” he added and I nodded slowly with a small oh.“Yeah speaking about your dad, have you seen the accusations going around?! About the company and your mom?!” I said bringing out my phone to show it to him.“No I haven’t, and I really don’t care. I’m used to the rumors. They are not true anyway.” He said, I paused and slowly slipped the phone back in my
Eleanor. Next day. 6:30amMy eyes slowly fluttered open, it took me a while to adjust but immediately I did my gaze fell upon a pair of brown eyes staring down at me. My lips stretched into a shy smile and I slowly raised my hands to cover my face.“How long have you been staring?!” I asked in a mutter as I gently pushed myself up to sit on the bed, “Long enough to know you look extremely cute in your sleep,” he murmured in reply scooting closer to me, I felt literal butterflies in my stomach at his words, he gently raised his hands to my face and tucked my scattered hair carefully behind my ear,“Good Morning Sunshine,” he whispered and placed a small kiss on my forehead.“Good Morning Love,” I murmured in reply with a sweet smile.“Today would definitely be a beautiful day for me, I got to see your face immediately I woke up,” he said, I chuckled lightly as I gently pulled the duvet away from my body and got up.“Stop teasing me Arthur, we have work today let’s get ready,” I mutt
Meanwhile , 6:30pm Eleanor. “Alright then, I’ll take my leave now,” Lydia said to me, I flashed her a small smile and nodded slowly. “And please do the needful,” she whispered, I took my lips into my mouth and nodded slowly.“I’ll try,” I muttered in reply, she passed me one last tight lipped smile before walking out of my office. I exhaled deeply and reclined in my chair. It’s been the three days and Arthur hadn’t spoken to me in these three days, we walked past each other this morning at the entrance and he barely acknowledged my greeting, he seemed to be giving me space, a whole lot of space. He had been doing everything to avoid working together with me and it felt really obvious. I exhaled deeply again, I’ve been doing that a lot recently, I tidied up my work, picked up my bag and headed out. I walked past Arthur’s office, on a second thought I paused and walked back, I placed a small knock on the door before pushing it open and walking in. Immediately he heard my footstep
Three days later … Matilda.“I’ve spoken to Louis,” Camilla began, breaking the silence. We were currently sitting with Carson in his office, it’s been three days after our first discussion and now, based on more developments we have come to restrategize. “He did a thorough job. We have Fred’s financial records, including the transfers to that shell company tied to the mafia. It’s all there.” She continued.Carson stopped pacing and turned to face us, a glint of both relief and worry in his eyes. “That’s good, right? So we can take this to the authorities now? And end this once and for all?!” I shook my head slowly, my fingers tightening around the stack of papers on my lap. “Not yet. We have the proof, yes, but we need to secure a few more pieces before we make any moves. If we present this now without covering our tracks, I have a feeling it wouldn’t give us what we want.”Camilla leaned forward, her gaze serious. “We need to lock everything down. If we go public too soon, Fred
Minutes Later …Eleanor. I sat on the edge of my bed, my knees pulled to my chest as I stared blankly at the wall. My argument with Arthur was still echoing in my head. We had never fought like this before, not so raw and ugly. My heart felt heavy, honestly I thought I should be feeling angry but I was feeling something different, Guilt. He didn’t deserve the things I said to him.Thinking about it now, I said a lot of things I shouldn’t have, I said a lot of things I didn’t mean and I hurt him even when he tried to make things better. I took advantage of my anger and poured out all my frustrations on him, and honestly, I shouldn’t have. I heard a soft knock on my door but didn’t move. The door creaked open a moment later, and my mother walked in. She didn’t say anything at first, just walked in and sat beside me on the bed. The silence between us was thick, but comforting in its own way. She didn’t push, didn’t demand answers, just waited.“Mom,” I finally whispered, my voice bre
Meanwhile. 3:30pm.Arthur. The door creaked open, and Eleanor stepped inside without knocking. She didn’t look at me. She never did every single time since today whenever she comes into my office. Her eyes flickered toward the stack of papers on my desk—the ones related to the project we were supposed to be finishing. She crossed the room, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor, sharp and unrelenting like her silence.“Sir,” she muttered emphasizing in the sir like she had been doing since morning and it is killing me!“I need you to review the final revisions for the Miss Matilda project. The budget allocations are off by two percent, and she’s asking for an updated timeline by tomorrow,” she said, her voice steady, detached. She didn’t pause, didn’t give me a moment to respond, just pushed a file onto my desk and continued.“Mrs Penelope wants the project done and over with as soon as possible,”“The marketing team’s also waiting for your approval on the ad campaign for the
Next Monday.Matilda. “This way Ma’am,” I flashed her a hearty smile as Mr Jackson Assistant led me to his office. My grip on my bag tightened as she led the way and I followed behind her, I wanted to get everything I came here for done as soon as possible. My first and easiest Target was Fred. I had Camilla draw me up companies that Fred cheated is still manipulating to his own advantage. He makes them sign contracts and then goes against them, just because he knew they needed him to survive. This is the third CEO I was visiting today, his office was more modest office, tucked away in the industrial side of the city. immediately I stepped into the office, he looked up and gently got up to his feet to greet me with a small bow.Jackson Barnes, CEO of a local logistics company. “Matilda, I wish I could help,” he said as soon as we sat down, running a hand through his thinning hair. “But you have no idea what these people are capable of. They’ve already made threats against my
