But his words only increased her sense of anxiety, and she was almost relieved when the phone in his study began ringing and he swore a little before going off to answer it. It was the one phone he never ignored—the private line between him and his brother’s palace in Khoshorbhan.
Pamela could hear him speaking in a lowered voice, so she took the opportunity to head for the bathroom down the corridor—the one he never used. Her heart was racing as she closed the door, and the terrible taste of fear was in her mouth. And she knew that she could no longer put off the moment of truth.
She flinched as she saw the image which was reflected back at her in the full-length mirror. Her face was paper-pale and her eyes looked huge and haunted, but it was her body which disturbed her. Like most women, she was not usually given to staring at her naked self, but even she could see that her breasts looked swollen and the nipples were much darker than usual.

But her decision didn’t give her any peace of mind. She was still left with nagging doubts. Theodore was leaving to go back to his homeland, and suddenly she didn’t know where her place in his life should be. She struggled to a find common ground.‘Did … did your brother and his wife enjoy themselves in London last week?’ she asked.‘I assume so.’‘They didn’t mention it?’He raised dark brows. ‘Should they have done?’‘Just … well, I thought it was quite a fun evening, that’s all.’‘Indeed it was.’ He gave a brief smile, preoccupied with his forthcoming trip and pleased to have something to take his mind of the damned tension between them. ‘But they have a hectic life, you know, Pamela. Pretty much wall-to-wall socialising wherever they are.’It was the hint of aloofness in his tone which made Pamela stiffen. That and the patronising sense that she had stepped over some invisible line of propriety. As if she had dared to look on the King and his wife as some sort of equals, instead o
The blue line couldn't be denied any longer—and neither could the test Pamela had done the day before, or the day before that. Because all the tests in the world would only verify what she had known all along. And all the wishing in the world wouldn't change that fact. She was pregnant with Prince Theodore Kaid's baby. The man who had told her in no uncertain terms that he had no desire to have a baby was going to be a father. The realization weighed heavily on her, a mix of fear and excitement swirling within her. How would he react? What would this mean for her future?Feeling caged and restless, she stared out of the window at the red bus which was lumbering down the road below. It was stuffy and hot in her tiny flat, but she felt too tired to face walking to the nearest park. She’d been feeling tired a lot recently, the kind of bone-deep exhaustion that came with growing a new life inside her. Every morning, she woke up with the same overwhelming fatigue, a constant reminder of th
Effortlessly he picked her up, as he’d done so many times before, pushing open the door with his knee and going straight over to the bed, putting her down in the centre of it. Pamela felt the mattress dip as he straddled her, one knee on either side of her body. With fingers which were not quite steady he began to unbutton her dress, and Pamela held her breath as he pulled it open. But he seemed too full of hunger to study her with his usual searing intensity, and maybe he wouldn’t have noticed even if he had, for his black eyes were almost opaque with lust. Instead, he was unclipping her bra and bending his head to capture one sensitised nipple in his hungry mouth.‘I feel as if I have been in the desert,’ he moaned against the puckered saltiness of her skin.‘I th-thought you had?’‘Not that kind of desert,’ he said grimly.‘What kind, then?’‘This kind,’ he clarified, his li

A remote place without
His words mocked her. Taunted her. They filled her with horror at what she must now do. Let’s go for it. That was the kind of thing a football coach said during the half-time pep talk—not a man who was telling you that you meant something really special to him. And Pamela realised what a mess she had made of everything. Despite her determination not to follow in her mother’s footsteps, she had ended up doing exactly that. She had hitched her star to a man who was unavailable. In Theodore’s case it wasn’t because he was married but because he was emotionally unavailable. And in a roundabout way he’d just told her that he always would be.I haven’t changed my mind about children. So now what did she do?Feeling sick with nerves, she sat up, her unruly curls falling over her shoulders and providing some welcome cover for her aching breasts.‘Before you say any more, there’s something I have to tell you, Theodore.’ She sucked in a shuddering breath, more nervous than she’d ever been as he
She stared at him uncomprehendingly. ‘What are you talking about?’‘Just how long have you known about this pregnancy?’She met the accusation which blazed from his face. ‘For a couple of weeks,’ she admitted.A strange light entered his eyes. He looked like someone who had been trying to solve a puzzle and had just found the last missing piece stuffed down the back of the sofa. ‘When we were in bed—the morning I got the phone call from Khoshorbhan about Leila—you knew you were pregnant then, didn’t you?’She shook her head. ‘I didn’t know. I had my suspicions, but I wasn’t sure.’‘But you didn’t bother to tell me? Even today you kept quiet. You let me come here and …’ She’d let him lose himself in the refuge of her arms. Lulling him into sweet compliance with the erotic promise of her body.‘We had sex, Theodore!’ she declared brutally. ‘Let’s not make it into something it wasn’t!’She could see the faint shock which had dilated his eyes, but his reaction was breathing resolve into h
‘Actually, I’ve decided that I want to carry on working,’ she said. ‘And besides, what on earth would I do all day—sit around knitting bootees? Plenty of women work right up until the final weeks. I’ll … I’ll look for another job, obviously.’But she was filled with dread at the thought of going from agency to agency and having to hide her pregnancy. Who would want to take on a woman in her condition and offer her any kind of security for the future?‘You don’t need to look for another job,’ he said harshly. ‘You could come back to work for me in an instant. Or I could arrange to have you work for one of the partners, if you don’t think you could tolerate being in the same office as me.’Pamela swallowed. She thought of starting work for someone new, with her pregnancy growing all the time. She wasn’t aware of how much other people at the Kaid corporation knew about their affair. After all, it wasn’t the most likely of partnerships, and Theodore hadn’t exactly been squiring her around
He hadn’t cared about anything except what he was to discover in that darkened room in Harley Street, watching while a doctor had moved a sensory pad over the jelly-covered swell of her abdomen. Theodore's mind had been a whirl of thoughts and emotions, a cacophony of uncertainties about the future. Would he be a good father? What would their child look like? How would this new life change his relationship with Pamela, the woman who carried his child?Suddenly he’d seen an incomprehensible image spring to life on the screen. To Theodore, it had looked like a high-definition snowstorm—until he had seen a rapid and rhythmical beat and realised that he was looking at a beating heart. And that was when everything had changed. When he’d stopped thinking of Pamela’s pregnancy as something theoretical and seen reality there, right before his eyes. The abstract concept of parenthood crystallized into something tangible and miraculous. His heart had lurched as he’d stared at the form of his so
