I felt a soft peck on my cheek first thing in the morning and slowly opened my eyes to see Vera grinning down at me.

“Good morning, Mom!” she said using her voice full of excitement.

She really was an amazing girl. If you didn’t know what she had been through, you wouldn’t notice since she was already bubbly again.

I smiled, feeling the warmth of her small hands as she pressed them against my face. “Good morning, sweetheart.”

“You won’t believe it!” she giggled, bouncing on her feet. “Dad, Vince, and I made breakfast! You have to come now! It’s ready!”

I blinked, still groggy, but the excitement in her voice made me sit up.

“Oh, really? All of you made breakfast?” I asked in surprise.

“Yes!” she said, grabbing my hand. “Come on, Mom, before it gets cold!”
