“Damn it! Where are the maids?”
Richard Parker's voice echoed through the vast halls of the mansion. Instantly, two maids rushed upstairs to enter into his study while making sure that their heads were lowered.
“Sir,” they reported in unison.
“Well, where is he?” Seeing the maids glance at each other, Richard let out an exasperated sigh. “Tell him that he has exactly thirty minutes to get his ass ready and to meet me at the car.”
They nodded their heads and obediently left the study. The youngest maid rushed down the hall and knocked on the large oak door. But before she could deliver the message, the door opened and the young man smirked knowingly at her.
“I know. I know. I heard him all the way down here. I’ll be ready in thirty minutes.”
The maid smiled in relief and turned to go back as she still had chores to finish.
“Who was it, Rayan?”
The young man closed the door and smiled bitterly at his family’s secretary.
“Just a maid sent to do her master’s bidding. By the way, Mr. Joon, do I resemble a child to you? One would think that was the case in this situation.”
“I’m sure you don’t appear that way to your many… fans.” he replied flatly.
Rayan didn’t welcome the sarcastic comment, but laughed it off anyway. Shrugging his shoulders, he replied, “What can I say? I guess I'm just too perfect.”
Mr. Joon smirked as he stood up and patted his employer’s son on the shoulder. “You better hurry and get ready.”
With the secretary gone, Rayan flopped down onto his oversized bed and stared at the family portrait hanging on the wall. He was smiling brightly beside his elder sister and their parents stood behind them, wearing proud expressions. Rayan was taken back to a happier time, well maybe not happier—ignorant would be a better word.
From childhood, he was used to hearing about how he had the “perfect” family. His father was the owner of the most prominent conglomerate group in Korea and his mother was the CEO of Seoul Hospital. Even his elder sister was a successful pediatrician. He was born into a family full of successful people. From childhood, he's been used to hearing that he has a perfect family. His father is the owner of the most prominent conglomerate group in Korea. His mother is a successful CEO of Seoul Hospital. And his elder sister is a successful Paediatrician. A family, full of successful people.
But was that considered as perfect? Was it because of the wealth and fame they carry? Everyone seems to envy and want to be him, but how many of them know that he wants to be them too?
A pre-arranged lifestyle, A pre-arranged career, and a pre-arranged girlfriend or worse.. a pre-arranged marriage with a successful woman, a daughter of the top businessman. He is handsome, she is beautiful. Everyone says it's a match made in heaven. The compatibility was solely based on background and outlook. But how about feelings? How about love? Does he love her? No one wants to know... or worse, doesn't care at all.
In a last ditch effort to have some freedom, he promised to marry the girl after five years of studying abroad. When he returned home, he immediately was thrown into his father’s business. But the place itself was breathless so he left again. somehow he managed to make it three years longer there.
Nonetheless, she was with him there too. And now he had finally come back, it would be turning into always soon. Yeah, he was comfortable being with her or maybe he was used to be having her with him because of his family? He had known her since they were in elementary school. But until now, he doesn't remember even one day that she captured his heart. Now it was even more impossible and she knows that. Because his heart was now already with someone else. Yeah someone else. There was another she.
Rayan swallowed hard as he thought about her again. Walking over to his desk, he opened the top drawer. As always, his heart skipped a beat as he stared at the treasured photo.
Though this certain "she" wasn't his anymore, his heart will be always hers. So the feelings for his so-called girlfriend were never the same or even worse he had never felt anything for her. But still, he was trying.... to... do... Do what? Forgetting about that "she"? Or forgetting about his girlfriend? He didn't know.
Letting out a soft sight, Rayan closed the drawer and went to the closet. He chuckled darkly as he saw the suit that had already been chosen for him.
“Will I never have my own life?” he mumbled as he began to get dressed.
***
After getting ready, Rayan came downstairs and went into the courtyard. He stuffed his hands into his pockets as he stood by the large cement fountain. He tried to find some peace and tranquility as he watched coy fish swimming around the bright white water lilies.
The Parker Mansion was a vast estate. With the extraordinary gardens, tennis court, and twelve car garage—his family really had no end of luxuries. But, were they really happy? He couldn’t help but frown at the delicate flowers floating in the fountain. Yes, he was surrounded by beauty and extravagance but he still felt empty. Almost as if a piece of himself was missing.
“What’s up, my dude?”
Hearing his best friend’s voice, Rayan turned around with a grin forming on his handsome face.
“What’s up, yourself? When did you get here, John?”
“I just arrived. I have some issues to discuss with Mr. Joon.” He lifted the small stack of papers in his hand. “By the way, I heard you're going to your—” He paused as he saw Rayan grimace. “Uh, I mean Somin's birthday party?”
Rayan was grateful that John refrained from referring to her as his fiancé. Rayan's smile fell. “You know, I really envy you. I bet life is a lot easier as an engineer's son, isn't it?”
John chuckled. “Well, it’s obviously better than your life. At least I’m allowed to my own clothing.” He stopped short of saying anything further as he looked past Rayan and nodded toward the courtyard entrance. “Your dad is coming,” he mumbled as he patted Rayan on the back and headed inside to see Mr. Joon.
“Yeah, I’ll see you when I get back. If you’re still here that is,” Rayan smirked.
“Sure, sure. See ya.”
Rayan let out a ragged sigh as he pushed his fingers through his dark wavy hair. His dark green eyes looked over to his dad’s disapproving countenance.
“I guess it’s showtime,” he mumbled and followed his dad towards the car.
[Rayan’s POV]
The glamorous hotel was located in the city center and it was packed for my fiancé’s birthday.
God, it’s so stuffy in here. I worked my way around the hoards of people. All I wanted was to get another fucking drink. This party had nothing to do with me anyway. My job was to just sit and play the charming boyfriend, which I had no inclination to do at the moment.
I was on my fifth drink and was feeling pretty good in spite of everything. I was getting so tired of all of this shitty pretense. Grabbing another glass, I reached over the bar and grabbed a bottle of Bourbon. Honestly, this was the highlight of my night. My dad was too busy to notice and I knew that Somin had instructed the waiters to not bring me anything alcoholic. That was fine with me though, I liked pouring my own drinks. I found it soothing.
Dragging in a haggard breath, I knocked back my sixth glass in one gulp. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nick, my childhood friend, coming towards me.
Fuck’s sake. Can’t people just let a man drink in peace?
He settled himself beside me with that stupid smile of his plastered on his face.
“Well, Mr. Parker, who had to balls to offend you this fine evening?” he asked. His tone was dripping with sarcasm and I shot him a hateful glare.
“No one,” I said through gritted teeth.
There was only one person who I was extremely pissed at and that person was myself. Agitated, I poured myself another drink and was about to drown myself with the dark amber liquid when Nick reached out and grabbed my wrist.
“Yeah... no more for you. Everyone is looking. What's wrong?”
I simply took the glass with my other hand and took a small sip.
“It’s that woman. It's been seven years and I can’t seem to stop thinking about her. Why is that? Hmm?”
Nick’s eyes widened in shock and with disbelief said, “Wow… still? What have you been doing abroad for all of these years? There are women lining up to be yours all over the place and yet you’re still hung up on the one who didn’t want to be with you.”
I was just about to answer him when a voice suddenly interrupted our conversation.
“Hi.”
Oh, how I hate that voice.
I didn’t even turn towards her instead I fixed my eyes on my glass.
“Hi, Somin! Why are you standing over there? Happy Birthday!”
I really wanted to punch Nick in the face. He was being a meddlesome prick and he was enjoying it.
Ignoring Nick, she came over to me and with disappointment written all over her face. “I called you so many times. Why didn’t you answer?”
I didn’t even look at her but took another sip of my drink. “I was busy.”
I had to say something or my dad would hear of it and then I would get an earful about how to properly treat my fiancé.
She sighed and grabbed my glass. “Rayan, stop it.”
I was on the brink of causing a scene for her taking my beloved drink, but she instantly grabbed my hand and dragged me to a secluded spot.
“It's my birthday, Rayan. You could have at least greeted me properly when you arrived. This is the first time I’ve seen you since you’ve been back home. Why are you still treating me like this?”
I knew she was getting tired of me and that was exactly what I wanted. Although it wouldn’t make a difference, she would never leave.
I took a sharp breath and looked at her coldly. “Somin, don’t you remember your promise to me? Don’t have any expectations, I won’t and can’t fulfill them.”
With tears in her eyes, she asked, “What do you—”
My phone started ringing and I was determined that whoever had interrupted us was going to get a big pay raise. Not surprisingly, I saw that it was Mr. Joon.
He really is the most reliable person.
“Mr. Joon, how can I help you?”
“Where are you now? Are you okay?”
My thick brows furrowed at his worried tone. “Yes, I'm okay. But what’s wrong?”
“Never mind, I will fill you in later. Stay right where you are and don’t draw any attention to yourself. I need to find your father.”
He abruptly disconnected the call and I stared at my phone for a minute trying to register the conversation. I had the nagging feeling that something was happening. Shoving my phone back into my pocket, I turned to leave.
“Everything okay?” Somin asked.
Shrugging my shoulders, I answered, “I don't know. I have to go check something out. You don’t have to listen to me, but I think you should stay here.”
Making my way through the crowd, I looked for Mr. Joon. It took about ten minutes, but I finally found him speaking with my father’s bodyguards.
“What's wrong?” I asked.
He turned around and frowned at me. “Some suspicious guests have popped up on the radar.”
“Do any of the guests have any enemies in particular?”
He shook his head and laughed softly. “Seriously, when will you grow up? Even you have enemies here because of your family’s position.”
“Right. I’m going to go find my dad and inform him of the situation.”
I walked into the crowded lobby and spotted my dad talking with the owner of LG Group, Seo Jin.
Striding towards him, I called, “Dad!”
Seeing me approach him, he smiled slightly. “What is it, son?”
Wow, when was the last time he called me that?
“Dad, Mr. Joon just—”
I stopped mid-stride. Noticing that my dad and Seo Jin were standing in front of a large window, I looked past them. Some movement across the street caught my attention. I squinted and realized that the person was holding a gun. Without a moment’s hesitation, I ran and shoved Seo Jin to the side and stood in front of my dad just in time to hear the window shatter as the crack of a gun went off.
The bullet smacked me in the gut and I flew backward. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion. I didn’t feel any pain, but my strength seemed to be draining out me. Lying there, I saw people running frantically toward the exit. I felt my dad’s firm arms holding me as I vaguely heard him calling for help. Everything started turning fuzzy and I finally submitted to the darkness. Finally, some peace.
After her evening rounds, Crystal went to the vending machines in the lobby for her break to grab her usual espresso. Hot cup of coffee in hand, she trudged back toward the elevators. “Evening, doc.” A smile spread across her face as she heard the familiar voice. She turned around and greeted, “Dr. Yejin.” Pyo Yejin was Crystal’s fellow general surgeon and a long-standing colleague. “How was your day?” Crystal chuckled. “Today was like yesterday. Tomorrow will be like today. How was yours?” Dr. Yejin rubbed her eyes tiredly while yawning. “Not so great. I’m absolutely beat and I still have a surgery scheduled for seven tonight. You—” “Good evening, ladies!” A voice interrupted. As the man normally inserted himself into conversations, Crystal didn’t even turn around as she heard him approach. “Evening, Dr. Alex,” greeted Dr. Yejin. Seeing Alex waiting impatiently for the elevator, Crystal rais
[Crystal’s POV] Stepping out of the operating room, I felt utterly exhausted. George was trailing behind me awaiting further instructions. Removing my bloodied gown and gloves, I said, “After you transfer him to ICU, start the blood transfusion. Make sure to monitor his blood pressure and oxygen levels every half hour. Call me if—” I froze as I saw a man striding towards me. I know him. He was Rayan's father, Richard Parker. “Doctor! H-how is he? How is my son?” he demanded. Internally sighing and wishing for this day to be over, I looked at him and informed, “The operation was a success. I suspect he will make a full recovery with proper rest.” Nodding towards George, I continued, “If you have any further questions, you can ask my assistant. You will have to excuse me now as I still have other patients to see.” Almost jogging to my office, I felt my chest tighten as my heart began to throb in my chest. Plopping down into m
[Crystal’s POV] “Why did you do that? Why did you lie?” Alex asked me as we stepped out of the ICU. I could tell he was extremely mad. He broke free of my hold and stood his ground, waiting for my explanation. Rolling my eyes, I awkwardly cleared my throat. “Um, well, you know—” “That you are still not over him? Yes, I know that. But, did you have to do that? Just to prove a point!” I glanced up and saw him give me a disappointed look. Crap. He was beyond pissed. “That’s not—” I didn’t even have time to defend myself before the elevator doors opened. He stepped in and turning to face me, he shook his head. “God, you’re hopeless.” He sighed as he pressed a button and the doors closed. “Ugh, you little brat,” I cursed at him as I realized that I needed to get in that elevator as well. Pushing the call button, I stood there thinking, Am I really hopeless? I didn’t do anything stupid. I knew exactly who Raya
Rayan was shifted to the VIP cabin of the hospital. He was half-lying on his bed, his head resting on the headboard, scrolling his phone."Even now, in this situation, you aren't noticing me."As the sudden voice filled the room, Rayan's eyes flipped open and he looked up at the person who was standing beside his bed, holding a bag. "Somin!" Here comes my fiancee who has finally found the time to visit me after a day of the accident.Somin gave him an unusual smile as she sat on the couch beside the bed after putting the fruits bag down on the table. "Are you alright now?" She queried, in her voice, there was no sense of anxiety.Rayan just nodded his head in response."When are you going back home?" She asked hastily as if she wants him to go back as soon as possible."Tomorrow." Rayan replied. For a moment both of them remained silent before Somin broke it again.
"How are you feeling now?" Crystal asked Rayan when he entered the hospital VIP room the next day.Rayan swallowed hard as his breath becomes heavier and warm tears started pooling his eyes. He didn't understand why this woman makes him weak all the time. "Like you care." He mumbled as he looked away from her.Crystal sighed deeply. She was trying hard to control her temper. "Mr Rayan. I am your doctor. Of course, I care.""Come out of your profession and then answer this question." He asked even though he knows nothing was the same. Nobody was the same.He noticed the sadness that crossed Crystal's eyes just now. She cares. She still cares though she pretended she doesn't. "I don't." She lied.Rayan let out a faint laugh but didn't say anything. Everyone just lies to him. What is he?Crystal raised her brows. "Why do you laugh?"He just shook his head. After a whil
"Can you really walk?" Mr Joon asked worriedly. Rayan kept saying that he can walk by himself.Rayan stood up from the hospital bed and looked at Mr Joon. "My stomach hurts a little, not my legs. Don't worry. My legs are fine. I can walk." He assured.Mr Joon let out a soft sigh and followed him to the elevator. In the elevator, Rayan was supposed to press on the first-floor button. But something crossed his mind and, he pressed on the third floor.Mr Joon clenched his jaw. "Why? Why are we going up instead of going down?"Rayan exhaled a sharp breath as the bruised in his heart ached hundreds of times worse than before. "I want you to see someone."Mr Joon raised his brows and gazed at Rayan. He wasn't sure if he was in pain or not. But he was sure he was going to surprise him. When the elevator's door swung open, Mr Joon looked around. It's the office floor of doctors. Rayan slowly started walking, checking every single office, reading the nameplate which was hanging on the doors.Mr
Another morning with the colors of sadness, covering the sky. The sun has come up and Crystal was sitting by a window, looking at the foggy outside. Her body shivered with a cold that will never go away, a cold that has been inside her for eight years. She has no complaints about the path she has chosen to follow, it's always the right path. She wouldn’t have had it any other way. Through her blurry eyes, she checked the clock. She realized it is time to let her feelings buried inside again. She stood and shuffled across the room; stopping in front of the bed where her daughter was snoring peacefully. She on the bed, and leaned to plant a soft kiss on her hair. "Get up. It's 7." She whispered softly. She knew her daughter was awake, she was just pretending to be sleep. She always does this. She knew after finishing the morning prayer, mom always loves to sit alone beside the window. She prete
"His BP is dropping." The nurse looked at Crystal worriedly.Crystal didn't look at the nurse. "Get some blood. Quick." She ordered. She put her hand up in front of the other nurse. "Give me the scalpel." She set the scalpel on the patient's hand and then she looked up at Dr. Rose. "Here?"Dr. Rose was looking in the monitor, he checked it again before nodding. "Did you find it?" She asked.Crystal cut the wound bigger before nodding and, extending her hand to the nurse. "Retractor."The nurse gave her the retractor and after using it to separate the edges of the wound, Crystal glanced at Dr. Rose.Dr. Rose sat on her seat as she stood up, she needed to pull the veins to tie it with others. "Tell me if you can feel." She glanced at the patient. After finishing the surgery successfully they came out of the operation room. Crystal came to her office. It's time for her to check the new
Dear diary, How long has it been? 13 years? No, to be exact it's 13 years 6 months and 4 days. I remember the first day we met in the canteen. A coincidence encounter brought us together and changed our life. We talked, we laughed, we fought. No, it was never a fight. I yelled at him. Because he never fights back. Whenever I get mad, he just smiles. Everything was going perfect between us. But one day a simple misunderstanding broke us apart. We cried. We suffered. And fate binds us together again. With our Unexpected Love: Anne. Everything just felt like yesterday. The day he was shot by the gun and was in the OT's bed in front of me. The day I was asking one day from him as my birthday present and he was ready to give me forever. The day when I decided to throw myself into his embrace again. The day when I let him slip the ring around my finger. That was the day when our happy love story be
Five years later.... (Trevi Fountain, Rome)"Aysha, don't run fast. Wait for me." Anne shouted from behind as she chasing her little sister.Little Aysha looked at her sister and smiled sweetly. "Anne, water." She pointed her tiny finger to the beautiful water fountain.Anne grasped her tiny hand and kneeled in front of her. "Yes. This is the Trevi fountain. Dad said most of the tourists will definitely come here to toss a coin."Aysha looked at her curiously. "Toss a coin?"Anne nodded. "According to the legend of Rome’s most famous fountain, the main reason for tossing coins into the Trevi is based on local lore that states doing so will bring you back to Rome again, someday."Aysha's eyes started shining, she looked back at her mother and father. "Mom, let's toss coins. I want to come back here again."Crystal smiled as she took out some coins from her purs
Six months later....Rayan was hugging Anne in his arm with Crystal snuggled close to him in a comfy swing at the balcony."When will the vacation end? I miss school so much." Anne pouted her lips sadly.Rayan looked down at his daughter with his gaze narrowed. "You miss school or you miss Kyungsoo?" He asked with a sour tone.Crystal laughed and hit his arm softly. "Stop being ridiculous.""But dad is right. I miss Kyungsoo." Anne smiled cheekily.Rayan let out a heavy sigh before he smiled. "You already like him so much?" He asked, looking at his daughter.Anne nodded and looked at his father. "I secretly called him with your phone yesterday. He was worried about me and gave me all the notes for the exam."Rayan scoffed with disbelief before he turned to Crystal. "That boy is really good at courting girls. He better be loyal and good to my girl or
Three months later...."Somin." Crystal gave her a smile when she entered her room. Her eyes dropped at her big stomach. "The baby is healthy?"Somin nodded and sat beside her on the bed. "Mom and baby both are healthy. What about you? Daniel said you have a fever."A deep sigh escaped Crystal's lips. "Even he knows that? Ah, Rayan! I'm totally fine, it's just because of the weather. And my husband is worried to death. He is really an annoying husband."Somin laughed. "He loves you a lot." She paused and put her hand on her hand. "He should. Who'll not love a woman like you? 8 years ago you fought with everything just to save his baby. I understand now because I'm pregnant. I wonder how did you survive alone."Crystal's lips curved with a soft smile. "Your husband has changed you a lot. I think you're in love with him already?"Somin nodded. "I'm." She then averted her gaze from her
1 month later in Hokkaido...."Ahh. Dad..." Anne screamed when her father threw a big piece of snowball towards her. She tried to stand up but the surface was so slippery and she fell on the snow again.Rayan laughed at her daughter's clumsiness as he ran towards her and held her hand to help her out. Instead of getting up, Anne pulled him down and Rayan fell on the snow beside her."You..." Rayan scowled. Anne giggled as she picked up a snowball and threw it to her father. Rayan quickly jerked to the side and avoided the snowball. He sat and pulled Anne into his arms and kept tickling her. Anne couldn't help but started laughing. "Dad. Haha. No. stop. Haha." Seeing her laughter, Rayan laughed.Crystal who was standing in front of the cottage porch laughed at them. "You kids better be careful, don't hurt yourself." She reminded them."Mom, come here and play with us." Anne shouted with a wide smile
When Crystal opened her eyes, she was already in the hospital bed. Rayan was sitting beside her. He looked so anxious still now. Her head wasn't spinning anymore. But she was feeling weak.Crystal pulled herself up in a sitting position and looked at Rayan. "Are you okay?" She asked Rayan with a soft voice. He didn't look good.Rayan didn't answer her, he cupped her face. "Are you okay? What happened to you?" He asked worriedly.Crystal averted her gaze from him to Yejin who was now standing beside the door. "Congratulations." She mouthed the word as her eyes met Crystal's and pulled Alex outside with her.Alex clenched his jaw when she closed her door. "What? Is she pregnant?"Yejin released his hand and nodded. "She is.""Do you think she'll be okay this time? She was so weak last time." Alex said worriedly.Yejin turned her head to him. "Are you still not over he
"Congratulations dude. The DNA matched. You're going to be a father." Rayan gave Daniel a friendly hug and patted on his back.Daniel grinned. "Thank you, dude." He was so happy when he saw the 100% matched result of the DNA test."I want an abortion."Hearing what Somin said just now, Everyone in the room turned their head to her, stunned. Daniel's face went pale, the smile on his face has vanished now. "Why?" He asked, shocked.Somin who was sitting on the hospital bed with her head resting on the headboard frowned. "Why? Am I crazy? Why do I keep your baby in my stomach and suffer?""The suffering is worth, Somin. Don't kill an innocent life." Crystal said as she entered the room."You're saying that because you have a baby with Rayan whom you love and he loves you too," Somin said while avoiding her gaze. She didn't know why she wasn't prepared to meet her gaze. "Can you two ple
"I didn't know my husband can sing too. His voice can beat any singer's voice. Why didn't he become a singer?" Crystal smiled as the dewy grass was cool against her barefoot, dark green and glossy, gently fluttering in the breeze.Rayan let out a soft and walked behind her in the grass. "His wife was the one who has made him fall in love with music. She used to give him a bundle of music's list." He remembered those days very clearly.Crystal stopped walking and took steps back to him. She snaked her arm around his arm and looked at him. "You're glowing so much today just like the sun." She put her palm on his face, bringing his face closer. She kissed his chin softly. "And so delicious."Rayan widened his eyes in surprise. "Madam. What's wrong with you today? So touched by today's surprise?" He leaned and kissed her lips.He was about to pull away when Crystal grabbed his hair and pulled him closer, kissing and suc
Crystal parked the car in front of the Han river park and took her phone from her purse before getting down from the car. It's still dark, and so cold. She wrapped her scarf around her and rolled her eyes around. The pathway was dense with rows of cherry blossom trees. The late winter breeze made her legs numb though it was quite refreshing with the touch of the pleasant smell of the trees and flowers. The place was so peaceful at this hour. Obviously, who will come here now?Her phone beeped. She opened the chat on her phone. From: RayanWalk straight and then turn your left.Crystal sighed, inhaling the cool spring air, the fresh scent of flowers passing through her lips and into her lungs. The petals were almost covering the ground in irregular clusters. There were street-lamps stood beside those trees, arching over the silvery road because of the fog, illuminating the way.
