Chapter 338

Author: Faith Shaw
Nash responded, "Hmm, if the car's broken down, we'll just get a new one. It'll make things easier for you."

"Okay."

They had a bunch of cars at home. It would be more convenient for her to switch to an ordinary one, especially the car used by the helpers for grocery runs.

After cleaning her wound, Nina walked out of Nash's office. She was getting ready to leave work.

Eve was waiting outside, and as soon as she saw Nina, she immediately called out, "Sister-in-law!"

Her voice immediately drew everyone's attention. The people in the office were still there, and upon hearing Eve's voice, they all looked at her with confusion.

With so many eyes staring at her as if trying to see through her, Nina instinctively tensed up. Before Eve could say "sister-in-law" for the second time, Nina covered her mouth.

"Mmm..." Eve did not understand why Nina did not let her speak.

"Don't call me that," Nina whispered, "This is a workplace."

Eve did not understand, "Why can't I call you sister-in-l

In the car sat Eve and Nina, with Nash in the driver's seat, his expression dark as he glanced at them holding hands in the rearview mirror. When did they become so close? He did not want Eve tagging along with them."Nash, thank you for your hard work. Let's have dinner together," Eve urged Nash to drive, oblivious to his grim expression. She was famished.Nash coldly replied, "Did I say I'd take you home? Where's your driver? Get him to pick you up."He was not going to chauffeur them around. But Eve clung to Nina, insisting, "We promised to have dinner together. You can't chase me away."Nina explained, "We're going to my parents' place. I've already arranged for friends to join us for dinner.""Oh, to your parents' place? Do I need to bring something?" Eve worried about making a good impression on Nina's family."Don't worry about it. My parents are very easygoing, and they cook well," Nina reassured her.Going back to the villa would mean just the few of them, probably a

Julia glanced at Nash, her warmth now replaced with a distant politeness. "No need, you're a guest, just sit there."Before, Julia used to like Nash quite a bit. Love begets love. But after all the facade shattered, she had regrets, yet she did not want to blame them. Their marriage was their business. If they were divorcing, she could not treat him the same as before. Now, when Nash came to their home, he could only be treated as a guest. No more favors. Nash knew it would come to this and his image in their hearts had taken a big hit. He wanted to redeem himself, especially in front of Nina's parents."It's no trouble to lend a hand when I’m idle," Nash persisted despite Julia's standoffishness, taking the initiative to help her. Julia wanted to refuse, but Nash had already walked into the kitchen, just as he used to, understanding her hardships and volunteering to help. Julia sighed inwardly as she watched him. Before, she used to be happy. She only had Nina as her daughter.

She meant well by talking to him. No matter how satisfied she was with him before, nothing mattered at the moment their marriage became a transaction. She wanted her daughter to be happy, not trapped in a loveless marriage. Nash did not pause his actions as he had expected what Mrs. Walker would say. He replied solemnly, "Mom, I'll give you an answer." Mrs. Walker said, "Nina also needs her happiness. I hope it won't take too long." Her words were clear. After divorce, with Nina's qualities, she would find someone who genuinely liked her. They were getting older and they could not accompany Nina forever. If Nina wanted to find a good match, get married, and have children, she hoped no one would stand in her way. During dinner, the family was harmonious. Although Eve had eaten with many people before at her grandfather's birthday or major holidays, it felt different this time. Mrs. Walker had heard from Nina that Eve had never been loved by her parents since she was young. As

She envied Nina for having such caring family members. She knew it was because she was Nina's friend that they treated her with such care."Come on, don't shed tears. A girl's tears are precious," Mr. Walker could not bear to see a girl cry.But Eve could not stop.Nina was the kind of person who easily empathized with others. She knew that Eve had no parents, only Grandpa George as her sole relative. Feeling sympathy, she wanted to introduce her to her own parents."Don't cry. Haven't you shed enough tears today?" Nina did not want to see her cry.Eve wiped away her tears, sniffled, and hugged her milk tea. "Thank you, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Walker. I'll come again next time."Zion and Julia saw them off at the door. As Eve descended the stairs, she could not help but cry again. Nina handed her a tissue.Nash, on the other hand, remained indifferent. "If you cry like this, and your grandpa sees it, don't blame Nina for bullying you."Nina was trying to comfort the girl, but Nash

She handed the bag to Eve.Eve, however, had some concerns and asked, "Weren't you next to me making a phone call yesterday? I turned around and you were gone. Are you sure it was me who disappeared?"Stella did not tell the truth. She did see Eve being bullied, but she did not lend a hand. Being a girl herself and not having anyone with her, intervening would have brought trouble upon herself. She could only watch coldly, waiting for an opportunity to slip away unnoticed. She could not let Eve know that she was aware of the danger she was in but acted as if nothing had happened. She smiled and said, "Yes, I was in an important business call. It lasted for over half an hour, and after I hung up, I didn't see you anymore. I thought you couldn't wait and went back first, but your bag was left with me, so I brought it over.""What happened, Eve?" Stella asked as if she knew nothing. In the past, Eve would have believed Stella's words without question. Stella was her senior schoolma

Stella's words left her momentarily at a loss for how to respond. Based on her understanding of Eve, she was simple-minded. As long as someone was kind to her, she would reciprocate that kindness tenfold. Yet, she had asked such a question. However, Eve's words did make sense. When they were still abroad, Stella did not know that Eve was Mr. George Gibson's granddaughter. Eve was young and inexperienced in the outside world, with significant differences in lifestyle habits. She was not accustomed to it, lacked friends and often kept to herself. She was said to have grown up without parents, making her seem vulnerable and helpless, with a much more tragic background than most. In contrast, Stella came from an affluent background, leading a comfortable life from childhood, and was doing well abroad. Someone like Eve needed help, and Stella could earn her admiration by providing it. Eve saw her as a support, and Stella felt a sense of accomplishment from that. She had always felt

She used to think that Eve was obedient. But since she returned to the Gibson family, she no longer was. Stella's eyes gradually turned cold. After venting about Eve, she began to dislike Nina even more. If it weren't for Nina, Eve would still be an obedient little bunny in front of her, doing whatever she was told. Ruining her good things!---While Nash was in the study and not around, Nina was shopping online with her phone. She bought a few parenting books. She rubbed her belly, though it was not very noticeable yet. Perhaps sensing her pregnancy, she felt that heaviness in her stomach. With the child inside, she felt reassured. Naturally, the books she bought could not be sent to her home, so she could only have them sent to Yvonne's place. She asked her to help with receiving them, and when she had time, she could go and see her, and take a look. She sent Yvonne a message to remind her. Yvonne replied, "Got it! When you send it to my place, I'll take a look too. Pregnant

The more Nash doubted, the more flustered she became. She instinctively clenched her fists tighter and explained, "My parents know I like it, they always make it whenever I go back. I guess I've just had my fill of it. Why the sudden interest in my diet?"Nash raised his gaze to her, gently smoothing her temple with his hand. "Nothing, just noticed you've been going through some changes lately. Just making sure you're alright."But Nina, don't keep things from me."As she watched his caring gesture, feeling both intimacy and suspicion in his words, she could not help but feel a pang of anxiety. She stared into his eyes, deep and inscrutable, as if he already knew what she was hiding. No, that could not be it. If he knew, he would not react this way. He did not usually pay that much attention to Nina. Maybe he was just suspicious.Putting on a forced smile, Nina said, "We commute to work together every day. What could I possibly hide from you? You're being paranoid.""Remember t

The moment Vera heard her assistant’s words, her expression darkened. Her previously calm tone turned firm. “If that’s the case, I understand. But I still have to go. This is my responsibility, and no one else can handle it.” If she didn’t take the lead, the other party would only grow bolder. However, the moment she glanced at the name on the negotiation list, she couldn’t help but frown. Because the person she was supposed to meet wasn’t just anyone. It was Helena Xander. Vera had encountered her before—back when her relationship with Caleb hadn’t yet escalated. Even then, Helena had openly mocked her, saying that since Caleb had been Luna’s devoted lapdog for years, he should know his place and never overstep. She had also thrown a few sharp words at Vera, telling her to recognize her own status—as if warning her that getting involved would only bring trouble. Back then, Vera hadn’t taken it seriously. She never thought she would cross paths with the

“Alright, enough of this. If you’re serious about investigating, you’ll need proper psychological evaluations,” Caleb said nonchalantly.“The best way to assess something like this is through clinical observation—watch for behavioral inconsistencies, memory gaps, or personality shifts. If you can, gather video footage of his daily life. That’s the only way to get a clearer picture. Otherwise, it’s just speculation.”Caleb made the remark casually, then swiftly issued a dismissal.“You came all the way here just to mess with me? What about your own situation? How’s that going?” Caleb’s sarcasm was dry and pointed. Hunter let out a long sigh. “What else could it be? Business as usual. Compared to others, I’m probably the only one with enough patience for this mess.” He was, of course, referring to his ongoing battle with Liam. Caleb gave him a small nod. “Alright, you should get going now. I need to rest. Don’t loiter around here.” Without hesitation, he waved his hand

Vera forced an awkward smile at Hunter before quickly retreating back into the bathroom to change. Hunter, watching her leave, couldn't help but smirk. “You’re really living the good life, huh?” he teased. “Didn’t expect you to have such luck.” Caleb rolled his eyes, clearly uninterested. “Enough with the nonsense. Why are you here? And who exactly were you talking about over the phone?” He didn’t want to entertain pointless banter, especially not about women. If he was being honest, even he couldn’t fully explain his feelings toward Luna. He wasn’t sure what was left between them—was it love, or just the remnants of something that had long turned sour? That pitiful look in her eyes earlier had shaken him. For a fleeting moment, he had wanted to pull her into his arms, to comfort her like he used to. But after so many years of being humiliated and pushed aside, he had forgotten how to even speak to her anymore. So instead, he did what was easiest—he change

Hunter spoke casually, his tone light. “Just someone, that’s all. Do you really need all these details?” Caleb was now certain of his suspicion. “Hunter, did you forget what I do for a living? I’m a doctor. If you’re asking me about this, I need to get a clear picture before I can give you an answer.” Hunter exhaled lightly. “That’s fair, but some things can’t be diagnosed right away.” Based on the information Yelena provided earlier, Hunter was only speculating about Liam. But Caleb was an expert in this area, so he specifically called to ask him.Still, explaining everything over the phone wasn’t going to work. “Forget it,” Hunter said. “This isn’t something I can explain over a call. Where are you? I’ll come over.” Caleb hesitated for a moment before glancing at Vera, who was still beside him. In the end, he gave Hunter the address to his villa. Hunter chuckled. “Haha. I’m surprised. You actually do go home to rest.” Caleb ignored the jab and tossed his p

“Call me Liam.” Before Yelena could finish speaking, Liam cut her off with a sharp, angry voice. She quickly nodded and corrected herself. “Liam, don’t worry. I’ll do exactly as you say. I’ll be good. I won’t make you angry again.” But Liam didn’t care. With a violent shove, he threw her to the ground. Yelena barely had time to brace herself before hitting the cold floor hard, pain radiating through her limbs. Liam, however, just looked down at her with a twisted grin, laughing like she was nothing more than a ridiculous joke. “You’d better learn fast,” he sneered. “And leave your hand broken for a few days—feel the pain properly.” “Alright.” Her voice was quiet, submissive. But Liam wasn’t listening. Without another glance, he turned and walked away. As she watched his retreating figure, Yelena felt a deep sense of dread rise in her throat. Liam wasn’t human. He was something far worse. Her future with him would be nothing short of hell.

Yelena had made her stance clear—her loyalty was with Hunter. But instead of being convinced, Hunter let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “You sure your loyalty is to me? Or is it just to money?” His words hit like a slap. Yelena stiffened, feeling the sting of humiliation. It was true. When she had been desperate, with nowhere left to turn, she had thrown herself at Hunter, begging him for help. If she had any other choice, if she hadn’t been pushed into a corner, she would have never given up her pride like that. Lowering her gaze, she spoke with measured calmness. “Mr. Hall, you gave me two hundred thousand dollars. You helped me when no one else did. That makes you my benefactor. And loyalty to one’s benefactor… that’s only right.” She didn’t dare meet his eyes, but her voice was firm. Hunter studied her for a moment before scoffing. “Enough with the useless talk.” His voice was cold and dismissive. “Just go back to Liam’s side and do what you’re suppose

Yelena needed to tell Hunter about this. But before she could finish, Hunter’s cold voice cut through her thoughts. She lowered her head. “This is just how I normally dress. I didn’t deliberately choose my outfit to seduce you, Mr. Hunter. Besides, your brother isn’t even interested in me.” She hesitated before adding, “That two hundred thousand…” Hunter narrowed his eyes. “What are you trying to say?” Seeing his growing impatience, Yelena clenched her fists, still looking down. “I mean exactly what I said. Any normal man wouldn’t turn down a woman who willingly throws herself at him. That night, Liam clearly said he would take me somewhere else… but when we got there, he never touched me. Ever since then, he treats me like I don’t even exist—like I’m nothing but air.” Hunter’s expression darkened instantly. “Are you implying something?” The implication in Yelena’s words was clear. She had just suggested that any normal man wouldn’t refuse a willing woman.

Vera, as a bystander, couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pity for Luna. But if she felt that way, how much worse must it be for Caleb—the man who had loved Luna for years? His pain was unimaginable. Yet, despite the hurt clawing at his chest, Caleb remained cold and unmoved. He didn’t let go. He didn’t waver at Luna’s tearful pleas. Instead, his voice was indifferent as he spoke. “Luna, women always say that late affection is the cheapest thing of all. But the same goes for men—I don’t love you the way I used to. You should go back to Simon.” And as if to drive the knife even deeper, he added, “I’m sure Simon still loves you very much.” If Luna had truly wanted Simon’s love, she would have accepted it long ago. She would have stayed by his side instead of chasing after Caleb now. In the end, men and women were the same. When they loved you, they would cherish you like a treasure. When they stopped, you became nothing more than an afterthought.

Caleb had no desire to argue with Luna any further. Instead, he turned to Vera. With just one look, she understood and stepped closer to him. Caleb wrapped an arm around her waist. “Luna,” he said calmly, “being with Vera isn’t as exhausting as being with you. Love should go both ways. I hope you can understand that.” “No!” Luna’s voice cracked. “She’s only with you because you helped her solve her problems. If you weren’t Caleb Smith, if you didn’t have the power to fix things for her, she’d be nothing!” Her dark eyes burned with resentment as she glared at Vera. Vera knew she had become Luna’s enemy—but what could she do? Caleb had already made his stance clear. Was she supposed to deny it? Pretend he didn’t just declare his feelings in front of Luna? With a steady voice, Vera replied, “Yes, I do go along with Caleb. He treats me well, and we’ve chosen to be together. We’re both single adults. What exactly is the problem?” She met Luna’s icy gaze head
