Chapter 2008

Author: Faith Shaw
After that, they decided to walk around the mall for a bit.

It had been a long time since they last saw each other, and now that they were finally out, neither of them wanted to head back too soon.

But neither of them expected what would happen next.

“Someone’s robbing the place! Stop him!”

A man suddenly dashed through the crowd. Vera instinctively stepped aside, but Yelena wasn’t quick enough. Before she could react, the man had grabbed her, pressing a knife to her neck.

“Stay back!” he growled.

Vera reached for her phone to call the police.

The man noticed and barked, “No calls! If you try anything, I’ll kill her right here!”

“Okay, okay, I won’t call,” Vera said cautiously, afraid he might actually go through with it.

She slowly put her phone down and raised her hands. “Don’t do anything reckless. This is a human life—we’re talking about murder. You don’t want that, do you?”

It was hard to tell if her words got through to him, but at least he didn’t esc

As soon as Caleb stepped out, Vera rushed forward. “Caleb, how’s Yelena?” Caleb removed his mask. “Her liver was punctured, and there was internal bleeding. But the surgery was a success, and the bleeding has been controlled.“As long as she rests and recovers properly, she’ll be fine.” Vera let out a breath of relief. Hunter, standing nearby, still looked tense, but the sharpness in his expression eased ever so slightly. Yelena was still under anesthesia, fast asleep. Vera stepped inside for a quick look, then came back out. Hunter was on the phone with his assistant, giving instructions. “Reject any private settlements. Get a lawyer. Charge him with attempted murder.” The assistant hesitated. “Attempted murder might be too severe—” “Too severe?” Hunter let out a cold laugh. After what happened to Yelena, the fact that he wasn’t taking the man’s life himself was already merciful. Hearing a small sound, he turned sharply, his gaze icy. Even as he fa

“What are you looking at?” Vera tensed slightly but quickly flashed a smile. “Nothing, just skimming through some documents.” “It’s late. Stop working.” Caleb didn’t seem suspicious. She let out a quiet breath of relief, reminding herself to stop digging. If she kept pushing, Caleb was bound to notice—he was too sharp not to. But sometimes, people couldn’t help themselves. The more they knew they shouldn’t touch something, the more they wanted to. *Late at night, Vera glanced at Caleb sleeping beside her.Moving carefully, she reached toward the nightstand, inching forward bit by bit. Finally, her fingers brushed against the cool edges of a metal object. Her heart skipped a beat. Just as she was about to grab the phone— An arm wrapped around her waist. Caleb’s voice, still husky with sleep, murmured against her ear. “Can’t sleep? Or do you have something else in mind?” Vera froze. If he were fully awake, he would instantly notice something was off. But

Vera decided to stop thinking about it. Even if she wanted to go find Caleb, she had no idea where he was. Besides, she wasn’t in a position to question him. So instead, she went to the hospital. “This is why you came to see me?” Yelena asked, twirling a toothpick between her fingers, a half-eaten piece of apple skewered on the end. “You’re such a coward.” Vera paused mid-peel. “Then should I call Hunter back right now?” “I’m sorry, I take it back—I’m the coward.” Yelena immediately surrendered. Normally, Vera would have taken this opportunity to roast her, but today… she let it slide. After all, it wasn’t like she was any better. “So, are you just going to keep pretending you don’t know?” Yelena pressed. Vera fell silent. It wasn’t that she wanted to play dumb—it was just that she truly didn’t know what to do. What else could she do? Ask him directly? “Of course, you have to ask him directly!” Yelena’s eyes widened, completely baffled by Vera’s hesi

Caleb wrapped his arms around Vera and said, “Got what I needed. Let’s go. Have you eaten yet? I’ll take you to dinner.” Vera shook her head, then asked, “Who was that just now?” “I asked him for some medicine a while back. Your cramps are pretty bad, aren’t they?” Caleb said it casually, as if it were no big deal. “His professor is a well-known expert in the field. They’ve been developing a new treatment for menstrual pain. It’s still in the experimental phase, but I managed to get a sample to see if it works for you.” Vera was momentarily speechless. “So you went out… just to pick up this medicine?” Caleb chuckled knowingly. “What else did you think it was?” His amused expression—like he had seen right through her—made Vera’s face burn. This was humiliating. She had stormed out, convinced she was catching him cheating, only to realize she had completely overreacted. “Sorry for making you worry,” Caleb sighed, lacing his fingers through hers. “I guess I have

Vera froze for a good few seconds before realizing what the employee was referring to. The embarrassment hit her like a freight train, and she wanted to sink into the floor. Damn it. She should have never let Caleb be so reckless last night. Now look at her—completely exposed. Thankfully, the employee was young and hadn’t dated before, so she didn’t seem to fully grasp what it meant. Still, Vera rushed to the restroom and spent an excessive amount of time touching up her makeup before she finally worked up the courage to step back out.*“Miss Mason, there’s a meeting in half an hour.” Her assistant handed her a stack of documents while stifling a yawn. Vera immediately started flipping through them. “Got it. By the way, who’s handling the Gibson project?” Her assistant gave her a name. Vera recalled that person—responsible, dependable. That put her at ease. The office was as hectic as ever. As soon as she got to her desk, she dove into work. Half an hour late

They also thought that, at the end of the day, Vera was just a woman. And what could a woman really do? Wouldn’t she eventually get married and leave?Rather than waiting until that day came and scrambling to transfer power, they figured it was better to clear the way now and hand control over to someone else. But Vera thought Mr. Lucas was getting ahead of himself. She smirked. “Mr. Lucas, have you even asked my father what he thinks?” He stiffened. Vera found it even more ridiculous. “Don’t tell me—you all want me out, but you expect me to be the one to break the news to my dad?“What’s the matter? Are you too afraid to tell him yourselves?” Her words struck a nerve. Because, of course, they were afraid. Even though her father had stepped away from power once, his influence among these so-called “senior members” hadn’t faded in the slightest. If they stood in front of him and told him to his face that they were kicking his daughter out? He would probably ch

Vera never expected her father to make such a decision. She knew that, given how much he loved her, he would surely leave her a share of the company in his will. However, she hadn’t expected it to be this much. And more importantly, her father was still very much alive and well. “Dad, you don’t have to do this.” She couldn’t help but wonder if he had been pressured by all the rumors and gossip. “I don’t care what people say.” Her father let out a sigh, looking at her with warmth. “This isn’t because of them. I should’ve done this a long time ago. The only mistake I made was waiting so long that you had to suffer for it.” Vera felt a lump in her throat. She hadn’t felt wronged when the board members accused her with their self-righteous speeches. She hadn’t felt anger when people whispered behind her back. But hearing her father say those words—that he had let her suffer—suddenly made all the bottled-up emotions crash over her like a tidal wave. She had fought

Without waiting for the others to react, Vera turned and walked out of the conference room. This time, she didn’t feel the same frustration as before. Her assistant, on the other hand, was practically beaming. “Miss Mason, did you see their faces just now? That was priceless!” Vera chuckled. But the assistant quickly sobered. “Still, they’re not going to just give up control of the company that easily.” Vera had already anticipated this and had a plan in place. “That’s fine. At the end of the day, I still have the final say. One by one, I’ll start pulling them off their projects. Once they have nothing left to hold on to, they won’t have a choice but to leave.” These people only clung to their shares because they cared about the immediate profits. Once Vera took away the “meat” right in front of them, they would stop coming after her. Dealing with company matters wasn’t the hardest thing, but it wasn’t easy either.Seeing how exhausted she looked, Caleb felt a

But instead of feeling touched, Vera’s first reaction was nausea. A wave of discomfort surged up from her stomach, and Vera’s face paled. She bolted for the bathroom. Caleb followed quickly. “Are you feeling sick?” “I don’t think so. I’ve been eating normally—nothing too heavy or weird lately.” Vera clutched her stomach, just as confused as he was. Then, a possibility flashed through her mind. Caleb clearly had the same thought. Without a word, he turned and walked into their bedroom, returning moments later with a pregnancy test. Vera looked at him, stunned. “When did you buy that?” He responded matter-of-factly, “Better safe than sorry.” Vera was momentarily speechless. Five minutes later, she stepped out of the bathroom, her hand instinctively resting on her stomach, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief. It was positive. They had only been married for three months. How did this happen so fast?Caleb, on the other hand, remained composed—at le

Of course, Vera wasn’t about to dump all her responsibilities on her assistant. That would be exploitation. She called her assistant into her office. “You’re twenty-five this year, right?” Her assistant blinked, confused. Wasn’t her age common knowledge? Why was Vera suddenly bringing it up? A thought struck her. Was this an arranged marriage situation? Her face immediately filled with silent refusal. “Miss Vera, I’m still young. I’m not thinking about marriage anytime soon.” Vera tapped her pen against the desk. “I’m not telling you to get married.” “Oh.” “I just want to offload some of the smaller daily tasks to you. You don’t have to run every minor document by me.”Her assistant instantly understood. A raise. After confirming she was on board, Vera gave her a salary bump and had her hire a few more assistants to distribute the workload. “If I don’t have time to handle everything, you guys will take care of it. If something’s too complicated, jus

Vera could sense danger the moment the conversation turned in this direction. Her father had never questioned her about married life, and she was lucky enough to avoid nosy relatives. But just because she hadn’t experienced it firsthand didn’t mean she hadn’t seen it happen to others. Without hesitation, she abandoned the half-folded pastry in her hands. “I... uh, need to use the restroom.” Before she could escape, Mrs. Smith caught her wrist. “You and Caleb aren’t getting any younger,” she said matter-of-factly. “You should start thinking about kids—make sure you’re putting in the effort, hmm?” Vera left the kitchen visibly drained. Mrs. Smith was a wonderful mother-in-law, the kind who treated Vera like her own daughter. Despite knowing Vera came from a well-off family, she had still gifted them a house as a wedding present. Of course, Caleb already owned a place, but his mother had insisted. “That’s your house. This is the home I’m giving you as a weddi

That undeniable possessiveness flickered in Caleb’s gaze—subtle yet impossible to ignore. It was the kind of look a powerful man might give his beloved in an old Hollywood film. And right now, the photographer felt like the unlucky bystander who had accidentally stumbled upon an intimate scene. His voice wavered slightly, caught up in his own imagination. “Mr. Smith, lift your eyes toward the camera.” Caleb’s sharp gaze flickered over, intense and commanding. The photographer instinctively pressed the shutter. They continued with several more poses, reviewing the shots as they went. Vera loved them all, but her favorite was still the vintage-inspired one. “How long until we get the final prints?” she asked. “Two to three days at most,” the photographer replied. “I’ll have them shipped directly to you.” Then, after a slight pause, he hesitated before making a request. “I actually have a personal favor to ask—would you both be open to letting us displa

Vera was tempted. They had already taken plenty of wedding photos—several sets at the island, more at the wedding itself. But this wasn’t just any photo studio. It was privately booked and known for being one of the most prestigious studios in the city. Appointments here were nearly impossible to get. The fact that Caleb had managed to secure a session meant he had gone to great lengths to make it happen. If they were just going to take ordinary wedding pictures, it would be a waste of an opportunity. Still, she wasn’t sure what kind of shoot she wanted. The photographer, understanding her hesitation, pulled out a sample album. “You can take a look at our past work. These are some of the styles we’ve done.” Flipping through the pages, Vera saw an array of stunning concepts—each picture more breathtaking than the last. Then, one particular set caught her eye. A Golden Age Hollywood theme. It was classic, nostalgic, and beautifully atmospheric. “Ca

After the wedding, Vera considered taking some time off for a honeymoon. But the thought quickly faded when she realized Caleb had been practically living at the hospital. With a sigh, she dismissed the idea. She was used to it, but to say she wasn’t disappointed would be a lie. Her assistant picked up on it. “Mrs. Smith, don’t you want to go on a honeymoon?” she asked one day. “One of my friends just got married, and she’s been obsessively researching destinations. “She even said a marriage without a honeymoon is already half a failure.” Vera froze mid-page, suddenly losing interest in the documents she had been reviewing. Her assistant hesitated, then offered a suggestion. “Why don’t you go visit Dr. Smith at work?“You seem… distracted. Maybe seeing him will help.” Vera snapped out of her daze, suddenly aware of how preoccupied she had been lately. It was embarrassing to admit, but she had been zoning out far too often—especially after coming hom

Whenever they did this in the past, Caleb always maintained some restraint. But tonight—he didn’t hold back at all. He took her from the bedroom to the bathroom, then back to the bed, his searing kisses trailing every inch of her skin. The next morning, even as she woke up, Vera could still feel the lingering traces of last night’s intoxicating pleasure. As expected, she ended up taking the day off. It wasn’t until two days later that she finally returned to work. *Everyone at the company had already prepared for this. The moment Vera walked into the office, she was greeted with knowing smiles and teasing remarks. “Congratulations, Mrs. Smith!” “Newlywed bliss, huh?” “Three whole days off? Someone had a good time.” It didn’t take a genius to figure out what she had been up to. Obviously, her married life was going exceptionally well—so well that she had completely abandoned work for it. Under the weight of their mischievous stares, Vera barely k

Yelena still hadn’t accepted Hunter, but he wasn’t giving up either and was relentlessly closing in on her. Knowing Yelena’s soft heart, Vera figured it was only a matter of time before she gave in. She let out a sigh. Her friend’s love life wasn’t something she could interfere with. Besides, Caleb had already given her a little inside scoop. “She came to the hospital for a follow-up a few days ago,” he had mentioned casually. “Hunter was the one who brought her.” Vera had clicked her tongue at the news. Yelena always seemed quiet and reserved, but apparently, she was full of surprises.*Time flew by in the blink of an eye.By mid-month, Caleb had rented out an entire vineyard and spent several days transforming it into the perfect wedding venue. When the day arrived, the celebration took place right there. The vineyard was sprawling and elegant, every bit as grand as any luxury hotel—if not better. Even the wine cellar remained untouched, stocked with years-

“Did you plan this from the start?” Vera narrowed her eyes, feeling like she had just walked into a carefully laid trap. “Mm.” Caleb smiled, then leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her lips. Because yes—he had always been planning this. The biggest change in Vera’s life after the island proposal was the ring now sitting on her finger. It wasn’t just any ring. It was custom-made, something Caleb had specially ordered. She only found out by accident when she glanced at his phone one day and saw the purchase record. It had been ordered two months ago. Vera did the math and was stunned. He had been preparing for this long before she even started getting impatient. Her heart swelled with emotion. And as soon as Caleb’s parents heard that their son had finally proposed, they wasted no time pushing them to get the marriage license. *One day, Vera overheard Caleb’s mother lecturing him. “Your dad and I weren’t expecting much from you.
