Chapter 1855

Author: Faith Shaw
Wilfred had been considering visiting Wendy’s home. After all, he was effectively one of her attending doctors now.

It wasn’t unusual for a doctor to visit a patient’s living environment, especially when their condition showed little improvement. But doing so without an invitation felt too forward, and he wasn’t comfortable overstepping that boundary.

After hearing this, Karina nodded in agreement, then sighed again. “Forget it for now. At least she’s here for the time being. We’ll just have to keep a closer eye on her.”

Following that, Karina began visiting the rehabilitation center regularly. Each time she went, she would bring something for Wendy.

Over time, Wendy’s attitude toward her softened, even though she still often greeted Karina with sarcastic remarks. At least now, the hostility had eased somewhat.

One day, Karina set off for another visit, carrying a bag of fresh oranges that Wendy liked.

She had gone to great lengths to pick out the best ones—big, pl

After wiping away her tears, Wendy calmed down and seemed like herself againKarina thought for a moment before saying gently, “Don’t blame yourself because of them.” “What?” Wendy asked, confused. “They’re not worth it. What you need to learn first isn’t how to gain their approval—it’s how to accept yourself and love yourself,” Karina said, her words deliberate and firm, her gaze filled with both sympathy and a hint of reminiscence. She was thinking about her own past. When Karina was living with the Stone family, she was just like Wendy. Karina was ignored and treated poorly too. Back then, she was young and naive, thinking that if she just tried harder, Mr. and Mrs. Stone would one day change their view of her. It wasn’t until she had endured countless setbacks and hardships that she finally understood a crucial truth that not everyone was worth pleasing. Or rather, the moment someone demanded you to lower yourself to please them, they had already shown they were

Karina let out a sigh. “Maybe the topic didn’t align with their core values?” “Don’t let anyone else hear you say that,” Yvette warned, visibly uneasy as she shuddered. “If word gets out, you’re done for.” It was clear Yvette couldn’t believe Karina had the audacity to openly criticize the Association. Who else would dare? “I’m just trying to find some humor in a bad situation,” Karina said, exasperated. “I put so much effort into that paper, and now that it’s been rejected, can’t I even vent a little?” Yvette sighed again and plopped into a chair. “Seriously, though, why’d you even pick a fight with the Association? Now look, you and Dr. Wilfred are probably the only two people they’ve ever deliberately targeted.” Karina froze for a moment, then felt an unexpected urge to laugh. Technically, Wilfred wasn’t her mentor in the formal sense, but the situation was undeniably ironic. His paper had also been rejected by the Association in the past, and now hers had been too

Professor Cruz was a senior professor at the local medical university, responsible for teaching students in their sophomore year and above. With only three lectures a month and sometimes even fewer, his classes were always packed to capacity. The reason? His teaching quality was unmatched. Every student he mentored personally had gone on to achieve great things. Most earned doctorates, while the "least accomplished" held master’s degrees. If Professor Zeller was considered one pillar of the medical world, then Professor Cruz was undoubtedly the other. The two were strikingly different in one key way. While Professor Zeller was known for wielding influence and had even founded the prestigious "Tree of Life Association" to gather top talent in the field, Professor Cruz preferred a more carefree life. He was elusive, often absent even to the students he directly mentored. Securing a spot in one of his classes was nearly impossible. It was a rare opportunity not to be missed

When Karina arrived at the classroom, the bell rang the moment she stepped in. Glancing around, she saw that all the seats were neatly filled. Hurriedly, she found a spot in the guest section and sat down. Her presence naturally drew curious glances from the students. It wasn’t every day a guest showed up in Professor Cruz’s class—something that had likely never happened before. Professor Cruz, elderly and slow on his feet, arrived late, long after the bell had rung. He walked in leisurely, clutching a thermos, exuding a relaxed air. Dressed in a simple jacket, he looked more like someone out for a stroll than a professor about to deliver a lecture. “Hello, class,” he greeted warmly as he reached the podium, smiling at the students. A chorus of voices immediately replied, “Hello, Professor.” Karina joined in, her voice blending with the others. Expecting the lecture to begin, she took out her laptop, notebook, and pen, ready to take notes. But then Professor Cru

“Come, sit down. I hear you’re one of Wilfred’s students? I know him well. His students are practically my own,” Professor Cruz said with a warm smile the moment Karina sat down, catching her off guard. “You know Dr. Wilfred?” she blurted out, then immediately realized how silly the question sounded. Of course, they knew each other. How else could Wilfred have arranged for her to attend the lecture? Professor Cruz chuckled, unbothered by her slip. Instead, he found her straightforwardness rather refreshing. As he looked at her, he let out a sigh, seemingly lost in thought. “Good, good… I had thought that kid might…” He trailed off, speaking more to himself than to Karina. Karina didn’t catch his last comment. “I hear from Wilfred that you’re here to discuss your paper?” Professor Cruz asked, steering the conversation back. “Did you bring it with you?” “Yes, I did,” Karina said quickly, pulling out her paper with care and handing it over. Professor Cruz slipped on a

Professor Cruz assured Karina that he would do his best to convince Professor Zeller to reconsider. Even if that didn’t work, he promised to personally approve her paper for publication. Karina was deeply grateful, but her gratitude extended even more to Wilfred, who had made this meeting with the professor possible. On the way back, she pondered how she could thank him. Wilfred didn’t seem to lack anything, and no matter how much she thought about it, she couldn’t decide what to get him. Her musings were interrupted by an urgent phone call from Wilfred. “Have you left Professor Cruz’s office yet?” he asked, his voice tinged with urgency. “I have. What’s wrong?” she replied, sensing something was wrong. “I’ve been called out for an emergency consultation, but I just got a call from the rehab center. Wendy attempted to hang herself. She’s likely in the ER by now.” “What?” Karina’s grip on her phone tightened. Without hesitation, she said, “I’ll head there right away

Karina didn’t resist. The scent was too familiar—so familiar that she didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. Of course, there was another reason she didn’t want to look back. She wasn’t in a good mood. She tugged at the jacket draped over her shoulders. “I was just thinking about something I once heard,” she said softly. Wilfred stayed silent, waiting for her to continue. “They say hospitals hear more prayers than churches. I never understood it before, but now, as someone on the inside, I do.” Karina’s voice carried a quiet sadness, tinged with melancholy. Wilfred’s chest tightened at her words. Without thinking, he pulled her into a gentle embrace. Both of them froze for a moment, caught off guard by his action. But neither moved to pull away. Instead, they relaxed, a shared silence settling between them. In that moment, it felt as though the invisible barrier that had always been there had quietly dissolved. Karina finally let her thoughts spill ou

Karina was trembling with anger at Wendy’s mother’s behavior. It wasn’t about meddling; it was about protecting her hard work. This was a patient she had painstakingly helped to recover. Who wouldn’t be furious if the progress they’d worked so hard for was undone by a few careless words? Just days ago, Wendy had been smiling with a healthy flush to her cheeks, but after her mother’s visit and a few cutting remarks, she was pale and withdrawn again. This couldn’t go on. Karina made up her mind. Wendy’s mother had to go. “I don’t care about the rest, but this is a hospital. Even if you’re her family, you have no right to interfere with her care. Here, only the doctors make the decisions,” Karina said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument. She had already noticed that Wendy’s mother was the type to bully the weak but cower before strength. As expected, her harsh stance left Wendy’s mother visibly flustered, her expression shifting between fury and frustratio

Vera hadn’t expected Caleb to sober up so quickly, but as soon as she spoke, the haze of alcohol vanished from his eyes. “Luna had just undergone surgery, and now she was out drinking? Was she trying to kill herself?” Caleb thought to himself. Seeing the shift in Caleb’s expression, Vera repeated Luna’s exact words. But Caleb didn’t say a single thing in response. Without hesitation, he stood up and stormed out of the room. Watching his retreating figure, Vera knew that Luna still held an irreplaceable place in Caleb’s heart. Caleb quickly tracked down the private room where Luna was. Tonight, she had an important business deal to finalize. She had to be there in person. But knowing she couldn't drink, she had only filled her glass with warm water. The business partners didn’t mind. In fact, they respected her even more—showing up to negotiate a deal despite recovering from surgery was a testament to her dedication. What they hadn’t expected, however, was for Cale

“This works for me.” Ben had no objections. The problem was that Jamie and Lydia were busy, and Nina, noticing that Caleb was the only one who had brought a girlfriend, decided not to go. Vera felt a little out of place being the only woman in a group of powerful men. But considering that these people had the power to revive Mason Corporation, she was willing to push through the discomfort. She hadn’t expected, however, that a quick trip to the restroom would lead her to an encounter with Luna. Luna, who had just undergone an appendectomy, should have been resting in a hospital bed—yet here she was. Their eyes met, and for the first time, Luna took a good look at Vera, scrutinizing her carefully. Vera wasn’t as beautiful as Luna, and Luna had already looked into her background. Mason Corporation had gone bankrupt, yet somehow, Vera had managed to end up by Caleb’s side. There was no way this was a coincidence. “Did Caleb make a deal with you?” Luna asked blun

Caleb firmly believed that if someone didn’t want to be controlled by others, they had to have their own strength and confidence. “Thank you…” Vera lowered her head and murmured. Caleb simply responded, “Instead of saying polite words, why don’t you focus on taking action?” Vera fell silent. When Caleb made a promise, he followed through. If he hosted a gathering, even the most powerful figures in the business world had to give him face. After all, he was always busy—having him arrange a meet-up was a rare occasion. Vera followed beside him, greeting each guest as they arrived. The first to tease them was Hunter. “It hasn’t even been that long, and you two are already official? No wonder you didn’t want to let this pretty lady go back then. Keeping her for yourself, huh?” He leaned forward with a smirk. “Come on, introduce her to us.” At first, Vera had also believed the rumors about Hunter and Caleb being involved, but after spending time around Caleb, she real

When Caleb worked for his success, he was the highly sought-after Dr. Smith, with patients lining up to see him.But when he leaned on his family's wealth, he was the wealthy heir of the Smith family, a man born into privilege. With his status and connections, he never had to struggle for anything. If he wanted something, all he had to do was ask. “You’re right, I can’t say I need your help with anything…” Vera replied. “But you never know—I might need something from you one day. Let’s just leave it at that.” Caleb cut her off, his tone calm and indifferent. However, Caleb’s father, Mr. Smith, remained skeptical about the whole situation. He approached Vera directly. “Did Caleb really agree to this?” Just days ago, Caleb had been adamantly against it, yet now, after less than 48 hours, he had supposedly changed his mind. “Uncle Smith, Caleb only accepted me because I put myself in front of him,” Vera admitted honestly. “He doesn’t want to see me struggling, and more

If his son were in the same situation, Caleb figured he would probably do what his father was doing now. Forget it. “Fine,” he said at last. “You can stall my father for now. But let me be clear—whatever money you take from him, you’ll have to pay back later.” He had no intention of having a child with Vera. Vera readily agreed. “Alright. As long as I can clear my family’s debt, I’ll do whatever you ask.” “First, put your clothes back on.” Caleb had encountered countless situations as a doctor. He had performed surgeries on both men and women without a second thought. But this was different. Vera wasn’t his patient. Vera had already braced herself for the worst. Now that Caleb had set the terms, she quickly put her clothes back on. But even after dressing, she remained on her knees. Caleb hadn’t heard any movement, and since he didn’t want to turn around prematurely, he was caught off guard when Vera spoke. “I’m dressed.” Only then did he turn to look at h

Caleb had acted out of kindness, offering Vera a place to stay for the night since she had nowhere else to go. He had assumed that after their conversation, she would let go of her ridiculous plan. He truly never expected that Vera would see him as her last lifeline. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. “Vera, I finally understand why no one is willing to help the Mason family. There’s not a single decent person among you!” Vera had anticipated Caleb’s anger, but she never thought he would lash out like this, dragging her entire family into it. Say what he wanted about her—but how could he insult her family? Frustration flared in her eyes. “I know what I’m doing is wrong. But I have no other choice. Caleb, you don’t have to take your anger out on my family.” “If your family was so ‘good,’ then why did they leave you with mountains of debt? Why is your brother missing?” Caleb snapped, his voice sharp. He hadn’t wanted to throw those words at her, b

Caleb’s voice was low, but there was a hint of bitterness tugging at the corners of his mouth. He never thought he would be speaking to Luna in such a tone. It didn’t feel good. “Caleb, I’ve never trampled on your feelings,” Luna said, her voice hoarse and her gaze tinged with sorrow. “I never once accepted your proposals. If I were you, I wouldn’t have proposed a second time. I would’ve kept my distance. I’ve always seen you as a friend, but look at the things you’ve done and the words you’ve said. I’m not obligated to say yes to you, yet you bring someone else into this just to put on some sort of show?” Her voice cracked, and the pain in her eyes was unmistakable. Caleb’s smirk deepened, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “You’re right. You’re not obligated to accept me. But have you ever thought about this? When you call for me, I’m not obligated to come running, either. And as for your accusation—I’m not ‘putting on a show’ with anyone. The girl who came here with me

Caleb stayed by the operating room until Luna’s surgery was completed successfully. After that, he remained at her bedside, not leaving for a moment, until she finally regained consciousness hours later. When Luna opened her eyes, disoriented, she murmured, “Am I… dead?” The sharp smell of disinfectant made her dizzy, and the unfamiliar surroundings only heightened her anxiety. “This is the hospital,” Caleb said softly. “You had appendicitis, and surgery was necessary.” Hearing Caleb’s voice, Luna finally relaxed. She wasn’t dead. But the thought of Caleb sitting by her bedside brought other concerns to mind. Were they alone? Was anyone else around? After all, Caleb had brought another woman when he came to find her earlier. Luna glanced around the room, her searching gaze caught immediately by Caleb. “Don’t bother looking,” he said coolly. “It’s just me here. I arranged for a VIP room for your recovery.” Only then did Luna let out a long breath of relief. She

“My father’s interest is just a passing phase,” Caleb said calmly. “Once he realizes there’s no outcome, he’ll naturally let it go. I’ve been in love with someone who didn’t love me back—it was exhausting. So why would I willingly enter a marriage with someone I don’t even have feelings for?”Caleb didn’t want a marriage without love, and he certainly didn’t want the worst-case scenario—a child born into such a situation. Even though Vera had suggested signing an agreement where the child would stay with him, Caleb couldn’t bring himself to agree. How could a child grow up happy without a mother’s love? And what would he do when the child inevitably started asking for their mom? He couldn’t bear the thought of the child calling someone else “mom.” And if he stayed with Vera just for the child, wouldn’t that create a miserable, loveless relationship for both of them? It was better to draw a clear line from the beginning. Vera hadn’t expected Caleb to be so straightforward a
