Chapter 1650

Author: Faith Shaw
Ben’s tone was as cold as ice. “I believe I’ve made myself very clear.”

Unwilling to let the opportunity slip away, Summer reached out, clawing at both his shirt and her own in a desperate attempt to stage the scene.

But she was no match for Ben. He shoved her onto the sofa and strode to the door. When he opened it, the police were already outside, along with a group of reporters who were evidently prearranged.

“This woman broke into my room,” Ben stated with absolute indifference. “She also had my room key card, and the wine brought to me by the hotel staff was tampered with. Please test it and handle this matter according to the law.”

The police, taken aback by the situation, reviewed the surveillance footage. The evidence aligned with Ben’s account that he hadn’t done anything wrong.

The reporters watched the entire scene unfold. Ben’s sharp gaze swept over them, his voice cutting. “Let me guess. You already had your headline prepared. Something like, ‘Renowned Lawyer Meets Se

Ben gazed at Jamie, his voice soft. “There’s one more thing I want to give you.”“What is it?” Jamie asked, a flicker of curiosity in her eyes.Ben pulled out a small box and opened it. Inside was a ring.Jamie froze, her eyes wide with surprise. “Are we putting it on now? Isn’t that supposed to wait until tomorrow?”“I want you to try it on first,” Ben explained. “This is a ring I prepared a long time ago, back when you weren’t by my side. Without your exact size, I could only guess and hope it fits.”Hearing this, Jamie’s heart melted. She understood what he meant by “when you weren’t by my side”—he was referring to the time she had left him. She had thought their separation back then was final, that their paths would never cross again. She never imagined that during those days, he had quietly prepared a ring for her.The thought made her unable to refuse him. Tears welled up in her eyes as she extended her hand, her voice trembling slightly. “Then will you help me put it on?

Jamie lifted her eyes to meet Ben’s and understood that this was his way of giving her strength. Following his lead, she climbed into the car amidst the cheerful sound of celebratory confetti poppers, her cheeks still flushed with shyness. Nina quickly slipped into the bridesmaid car right behind hers. The long procession of luxury cars moved in perfect sync, turning heads wherever they went. Sleek, high-end vehicles worth millions of dollars captured everyone's attention as they cruised through the city streets.Passersby couldn’t resist snapping photos and sharing their amazement online.“Who’s getting married with such extravagance? Look at all those luxury cars!” one post read.Within moments, the scene went viral, and social media buzzed with speculation. Soon, the mystery was solved. It wasn’t just anyone’s wedding, but that of Ben Lucas, the CEO of Lucas Corporation, a man with even more prominence than any socialite or trust fund heir.Insiders quickly chimed in, reveal

Jamie had no other answer but to agree. Ben slipped the silver ring onto her finger, its snug fit making it feel as though it was meant to be there, encircling her finger securely. She then took his matching ring and placed it on his finger. It was only then that Jamie noticed a subtle difference between their rings. The letters engraved on hers were raised, smooth to the touch. But on Ben’s, the letters were etched into the inner band, pressing against the skin. It wouldn’t cause pain, but it was surely uncomfortable.Jamie paused briefly, staring at the ring with a trace of astonishment. Ben noticed and extended his hand for her to pull him up. The gesture served as a gentle nudge to snap her out of her thoughts.“Sorry, I zoned out for a moment,” Jamie whispered apologetically as she leaned closer to him.Ben, his arm now linked with hers, led her toward their guests to make toasts. “I noticed,” he murmured quietly. It was why he’d reminded her. Luckily, the brief moment

The thought that Winnie might be watching her at this very moment helped Jamie compose herself. She quickly found her stride, greeting familiar faces with ease.Nina, watching Jamie and Ben alternate sipping drinks, suddenly had an idea. “How about you two do a toast with your arms linked? It’s way more romantic and fun. What do you all think?”Orion, his mouth full of food, was the first to raise his hand in agreement. “Yes!”Jamie gave them a helpless look. “Orion, you’ve been totally corrupted by your mom.”Nina, wiping Orion’s mouth, raised an eyebrow. “Corrupted? I’m just making your wedding more entertaining.”In the end, Jamie relented. She turned to Ben and picked up one of the glasses. “I’ll drink this one,” she offered.Up until now, Ben had been doing most of the drinking, knowing Jamie wasn’t great with alcohol. He picked up the other glass and nodded.Orion watched them curiously, wide-eyed. Nina quickly covered Orion’s eyes. “No peeking. This is for grown-ups.”

Jamie had to fight back her tears as she gazed at her long-lost sister. It didn’t take long for her to notice that Winnie’s face wasn’t the same as before. Her eyes trembled as she gripped her sister’s hands tightly. “What happened to your face? Was it from the fire? Does it hurt?”Winnie touched her face and lowered her gaze. In truth, she didn’t care much about her appearance anymore. A different face was a small price to pay for her life. Surviving had been a blessing in itself. But for someone who had always thought this way, hearing Jamie’s concern broke through her defenses. Winnie’s eyes reddened for a brief moment. “It hurts, Jamie. It hurts so much.”She had never felt pain like this before. The fire had been agonizing. The weeks spent motionless in bed had been unbearable. And being controlled, drugged, and beaten by that man had hurt the most.As Winnie spoke, her voice grew smaller, filled with pain. “It hurt so much, Jamie. There were so many times I just wanted to

The next morning, Charlie kept staring at Jamie, making her feel a little self-conscious. Thinking he might have noticed something unusual, she asked, “Why are you staring at Mommy? Eat your breakfast, or you’ll be late.”Charlie, nibbling on a bun, blinked innocently and mumbled with his mouth full, “I heard from my friends at preschool that when Mommy and Daddy love each other, a new baby brother or sister comes soon. Mommy, am I going to have a sister?”Jamie nearly choked on her coffee. She pounded her chest a few times before regaining her breath and glared at Charlie, whose face was full of curiosity. “What nonsense are you talking about? Eat your breakfast.”“Oh,” Charlie said, pouting. He decided Mommy was just shy.Jamie had no idea what was running through his little head. If she did, she definitely wouldn’t let it go so easily.*After dropping Charlie off at preschool, Jamie drove to work like usual. When she walked into the office, the stares she received almost st

Jamie froze for a moment, realizing it wasn’t a reprimand or her needing to apologize for something she had messed up. “Well, why didn’t he just say so earlier?” she silently remarked. She instantly relaxed and pulled out her phone, scrolling briefly before landing on a suggestion. “How about this place?”Ben nodded. “That works. Also, pick Charlie up from preschool on the way. He doesn’t need to stay the whole day. We’ll take him with us after lunch to visit the family home.”Jamie didn’t ask why they would be heading there, but the look on Ben’s face said enough. She had a hunch. Very few people could make Ben wear that expression, and the only one who came to mind was his father. This visit must have something to do with him.*After lunch, they headed to the Lucas family estate. Although Charlie had visited before, this was his first time going with Jamie, and he was bursting with excitement. He fidgeted nonstop in the car, leaning this way and that.Jamie finally reached

Ben suddenly looked up, his eyes filled with disbelief.Mrs. Lucas quietly closed the door behind her and turned to face him. Seeing the turmoil in his expression, she let out a soft sigh. “Don’t hold a grudge against your father anymore. He may have a sharp tongue, but that’s just his way. All those years you insisted on becoming a lawyer, he may have scolded you, but deep down, he was proud of you.”Ben said nothing. To grow up believing that his father didn’t care for him, only to discover one day that his father’s feelings were more complicated and layered. It wasn’t something anyone could accept easily.Without a word, Ben left the estate, skipping dinner. Jamie didn’t push him for an explanation, and when Charlie started asking questions, she gently hushed him.It wasn’t until they were back home, lying together in bed, that she finally voiced the question that had been on her mind since they left the estate. “Are you upset?”Ben was silent for a long time before finally sp

But instead of feeling touched, Vera’s first reaction was nausea. A wave of discomfort surged up from her stomach, and Vera’s face paled. She bolted for the bathroom. Caleb followed quickly. “Are you feeling sick?” “I don’t think so. I’ve been eating normally—nothing too heavy or weird lately.” Vera clutched her stomach, just as confused as he was. Then, a possibility flashed through her mind. Caleb clearly had the same thought. Without a word, he turned and walked into their bedroom, returning moments later with a pregnancy test. Vera looked at him, stunned. “When did you buy that?” He responded matter-of-factly, “Better safe than sorry.” Vera was momentarily speechless. Five minutes later, she stepped out of the bathroom, her hand instinctively resting on her stomach, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief. It was positive. They had only been married for three months. How did this happen so fast?Caleb, on the other hand, remained composed—at le

Of course, Vera wasn’t about to dump all her responsibilities on her assistant. That would be exploitation. She called her assistant into her office. “You’re twenty-five this year, right?” Her assistant blinked, confused. Wasn’t her age common knowledge? Why was Vera suddenly bringing it up? A thought struck her. Was this an arranged marriage situation? Her face immediately filled with silent refusal. “Miss Vera, I’m still young. I’m not thinking about marriage anytime soon.” Vera tapped her pen against the desk. “I’m not telling you to get married.” “Oh.” “I just want to offload some of the smaller daily tasks to you. You don’t have to run every minor document by me.”Her assistant instantly understood. A raise. After confirming she was on board, Vera gave her a salary bump and had her hire a few more assistants to distribute the workload. “If I don’t have time to handle everything, you guys will take care of it. If something’s too complicated, jus

Vera could sense danger the moment the conversation turned in this direction. Her father had never questioned her about married life, and she was lucky enough to avoid nosy relatives. But just because she hadn’t experienced it firsthand didn’t mean she hadn’t seen it happen to others. Without hesitation, she abandoned the half-folded pastry in her hands. “I... uh, need to use the restroom.” Before she could escape, Mrs. Smith caught her wrist. “You and Caleb aren’t getting any younger,” she said matter-of-factly. “You should start thinking about kids—make sure you’re putting in the effort, hmm?” Vera left the kitchen visibly drained. Mrs. Smith was a wonderful mother-in-law, the kind who treated Vera like her own daughter. Despite knowing Vera came from a well-off family, she had still gifted them a house as a wedding present. Of course, Caleb already owned a place, but his mother had insisted. “That’s your house. This is the home I’m giving you as a weddi

That undeniable possessiveness flickered in Caleb’s gaze—subtle yet impossible to ignore. It was the kind of look a powerful man might give his beloved in an old Hollywood film. And right now, the photographer felt like the unlucky bystander who had accidentally stumbled upon an intimate scene. His voice wavered slightly, caught up in his own imagination. “Mr. Smith, lift your eyes toward the camera.” Caleb’s sharp gaze flickered over, intense and commanding. The photographer instinctively pressed the shutter. They continued with several more poses, reviewing the shots as they went. Vera loved them all, but her favorite was still the vintage-inspired one. “How long until we get the final prints?” she asked. “Two to three days at most,” the photographer replied. “I’ll have them shipped directly to you.” Then, after a slight pause, he hesitated before making a request. “I actually have a personal favor to ask—would you both be open to letting us displa

Vera was tempted. They had already taken plenty of wedding photos—several sets at the island, more at the wedding itself. But this wasn’t just any photo studio. It was privately booked and known for being one of the most prestigious studios in the city. Appointments here were nearly impossible to get. The fact that Caleb had managed to secure a session meant he had gone to great lengths to make it happen. If they were just going to take ordinary wedding pictures, it would be a waste of an opportunity. Still, she wasn’t sure what kind of shoot she wanted. The photographer, understanding her hesitation, pulled out a sample album. “You can take a look at our past work. These are some of the styles we’ve done.” Flipping through the pages, Vera saw an array of stunning concepts—each picture more breathtaking than the last. Then, one particular set caught her eye. A Golden Age Hollywood theme. It was classic, nostalgic, and beautifully atmospheric. “Ca

After the wedding, Vera considered taking some time off for a honeymoon. But the thought quickly faded when she realized Caleb had been practically living at the hospital. With a sigh, she dismissed the idea. She was used to it, but to say she wasn’t disappointed would be a lie. Her assistant picked up on it. “Mrs. Smith, don’t you want to go on a honeymoon?” she asked one day. “One of my friends just got married, and she’s been obsessively researching destinations. “She even said a marriage without a honeymoon is already half a failure.” Vera froze mid-page, suddenly losing interest in the documents she had been reviewing. Her assistant hesitated, then offered a suggestion. “Why don’t you go visit Dr. Smith at work?“You seem… distracted. Maybe seeing him will help.” Vera snapped out of her daze, suddenly aware of how preoccupied she had been lately. It was embarrassing to admit, but she had been zoning out far too often—especially after coming hom

Whenever they did this in the past, Caleb always maintained some restraint. But tonight—he didn’t hold back at all. He took her from the bedroom to the bathroom, then back to the bed, his searing kisses trailing every inch of her skin. The next morning, even as she woke up, Vera could still feel the lingering traces of last night’s intoxicating pleasure. As expected, she ended up taking the day off. It wasn’t until two days later that she finally returned to work. *Everyone at the company had already prepared for this. The moment Vera walked into the office, she was greeted with knowing smiles and teasing remarks. “Congratulations, Mrs. Smith!” “Newlywed bliss, huh?” “Three whole days off? Someone had a good time.” It didn’t take a genius to figure out what she had been up to. Obviously, her married life was going exceptionally well—so well that she had completely abandoned work for it. Under the weight of their mischievous stares, Vera barely k

Yelena still hadn’t accepted Hunter, but he wasn’t giving up either and was relentlessly closing in on her. Knowing Yelena’s soft heart, Vera figured it was only a matter of time before she gave in. She let out a sigh. Her friend’s love life wasn’t something she could interfere with. Besides, Caleb had already given her a little inside scoop. “She came to the hospital for a follow-up a few days ago,” he had mentioned casually. “Hunter was the one who brought her.” Vera had clicked her tongue at the news. Yelena always seemed quiet and reserved, but apparently, she was full of surprises.*Time flew by in the blink of an eye.By mid-month, Caleb had rented out an entire vineyard and spent several days transforming it into the perfect wedding venue. When the day arrived, the celebration took place right there. The vineyard was sprawling and elegant, every bit as grand as any luxury hotel—if not better. Even the wine cellar remained untouched, stocked with years-

“Did you plan this from the start?” Vera narrowed her eyes, feeling like she had just walked into a carefully laid trap. “Mm.” Caleb smiled, then leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her lips. Because yes—he had always been planning this. The biggest change in Vera’s life after the island proposal was the ring now sitting on her finger. It wasn’t just any ring. It was custom-made, something Caleb had specially ordered. She only found out by accident when she glanced at his phone one day and saw the purchase record. It had been ordered two months ago. Vera did the math and was stunned. He had been preparing for this long before she even started getting impatient. Her heart swelled with emotion. And as soon as Caleb’s parents heard that their son had finally proposed, they wasted no time pushing them to get the marriage license. *One day, Vera overheard Caleb’s mother lecturing him. “Your dad and I weren’t expecting much from you.
