Chapter 1424

Author: Faith Shaw
“Freya,” Micah’s voice came out hoarse, laden with pain.

Why did this have to happen to them, of all people? They had been looking forward to their baby’s arrival so much, with baby clothes ready, even a name nearly chosen. But life had other plans.

“I’m really okay,” Freya tried to reassure him, though her words only deepened the ache in Micah’s heart.

He looked down from her face, his gaze lingering until it settled on her abdomen. Once gently rounded, now it was flat. He wrestled with whether to tell her the truth. If he said it, how would she bear such heartbreak? Yet, even if he kept quiet now, she would eventually learn the truth.

The words hovered on the tip of his tongue, but Micah could not bring himself to say them.

“Micah, don’t look at me like that. I’m fine. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with me, right?” Freya could not help but follow his gaze downward. As her eyes landed on her belly, realization hit her like a blow.

She raised her trembling hand, gently feeli

Micah could not find the words, so he just held her tightly until the doctor entered the room.Handing him a report, the doctor said, “The results are in. It seems there’s anemia and malnutrition, likely caused by recent exhaustion.”“Exhaustion?” Micah immediately recalled everything Freya had done to help him. If he had known it would lead to this, he would have stayed up all night himself to finish everything, rather than let her take on even a bit of the burden. Would the baby still be with them if he hadn’t let her help?Micah voiced his question, “Did the miscarriage happen because Freya was too exhausted?”“It could be a factor,” the doctor said, “but it’s never just one cause. The health of both parents plays a role in these things since a pregnancy relies on both. Blaming one person is neither fair nor accurate.”“I understand. Thank you, doctor. Could you prescribe something to help her recover?” Micah’s main focus now was ensuring Freya’s health. But Freya had anothe

Micah looked at her gently and said, “The doctor said it’s a matter of both our health, not just yours. And besides, we can still have a child. Why push me away now?”He understood that Freya was not usually this emotional. It was just the overwhelming sadness clouding her judgment and causing her to act impulsively. But he was patient and ready to stay by her side, supporting her as she regained her strength.“We’ll have a child, Freya. I know it. Trust me. My gut is rarely wrong,” he reassured her over and over, his tone unwavering.Freya still had her doubts. “But what if… what if we can’t?”“Then we can’t, and that’s fine too,” Micah replied, his voice steady. “Nina already has her hands full with her two kids, and they’re family. They’ll be ours to spoil too. And when we’re older, we can just travel together, seeing the world with nothing to hold us back.” He loved kids, but he also saw joy in the idea of a life spent just the two of them, making their own adventures. With hi

Nina sighed to herself, thinking that the bond between grandparents and grandchildren really was something special. The moment the kids were mentioned, Pharaoh agreed without hesitation.During their last visit to the hospital, she had seen Pharaoh slip a piece of paper under his pillow. It was likely a medical report. While Nash and Pharaoh were engrossed in talking about Gemma, Nina slowed her steps and approached the back of Pharaoh’s bed. She slipped her hand under the pillow but it was empty. Pharaoh must have already disposed of the report. He was indeed intent on keeping everyone in the dark.Determined to find another way, she was suddenly interrupted by Gemma’s wail. Pharaoh, who was holding her, looked panicked. “Am I holding her wrong?” He adjusted his grip several times, but no matter how he held her, Gemma only cried louder.Nash quickly figured it out. “She’s probably hungry.”“Where’s the formula? Hurry, we can’t let my little granddaughter go hungry!” Pharaoh fret

The nurse wheeled her cart over to Pharaoh’s bedside, handing him his medication and carefully setting up his IV. “Are you really not considering chemotherapy?” she asked, trying one last time. “These medications can only do so much, especially at this stage.”These medications had very limited effects. To put it nicely, it's conservative treatment but bluntly, it's just waiting to die. She really couldn’t understand his choice.Pharaoh shook his head. “No, I’ll just take the pills. You don’t need to keep trying to convince me. I know what I’m doing.”The nurse sighed heavily. “If you won’t do chemotherapy, will you still want to come in for regular scans to monitor the cancer’s spread?”After a pause, Pharaoh nodded. “Yeah, I’ll keep up with the checkups. At least that way, I’ll know how much time I have to set everything in order.”With that, the nurse finished setting up the IV, then turned to leave. As she opened the door, she came face to face with Nina standing right outside

“It’s not as simple as that,” Nina gently but firmly corrected him. “By actively undergoing treatment, even if a full recovery isn’t possible, it’ll at least ease the pain and extend your life. You know enough about medicine to understand this, don’t you?”She had a good guess about what was really holding him back and got straight to the point. “Is it because you think chemo will make you lose your hair and look different, so you don’t want to go through it?”Pharaoh nodded. He wanted to leave this world with dignity, not as a shadow of his former self that might scare the kids. “Oh, come on,” Nina said, half-amused, half-exasperated. “You’re not a young guy anymore. What’s with the vanity? A little hair loss isn’t the end of the world. When people get older, they naturally lose hair! Look at all the grandpas out there. They’re healthy as an ox, but barely a strand left on their heads.”“Losing some hair and going completely bald are two very different things,” Pharaoh grumbled,

Nina smiled and nodded, standing up to call the attending doctor to discuss Pharaoh’s health in detail. “Doctor, my dad has decided he’s ready to start treatment.”“That’s wonderful to hear. We tried convincing him before, but nothing seemed to get through. Sometimes, it really takes family,” the doctor replied with a smile. He was glad to move from simply managing pain to actively trying to save a life. After going over the treatment plan with the doctor, Nina chatted with Pharaoh for a little while before heading home. When she got home, Nina immediately called Micah on a video call. After a long wait, he finally answered, and the weariness etched on his face made her heart ache. “Is work too much?” she asked, concern filling her voice.Micah managed a faint smile. “Yeah, you never truly understand the weight of this job until you’re in it.”Although the doctors had explained that Freya’s miscarriage likely had to do with the embryo’s development, Micah couldn’t help but wond

Nina respected their decision completely. It was their life, and they should be the ones to decide. As his sister, the best she could do was be there to comfort them during hard times. After a few more words, Nina shared the news about Pharaoh with Micah. “Dad was just diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer.”Micah froze. “How could that happen?” he murmured, stunned. When Pharaoh left the country, he had been in good health, and now, in such a short time, it was late-stage cancer.Nina wished it weren’t true either, but the official report from a top-tier hospital left no room for doubt. “Dad initially wanted to skip treatment and just take some medication, but I managed to convince him otherwise,” she said, hoping Micah would come see their father. After all, they were father and son by blood. Even though Pharaoh would not say it outright, Nina was certain he missed his son deeply. Still, given Micah’s current situation, she hesitated to ask him to come back.Micah then spoke u

Freya lowered her head, feeling a wave of sadness. Earlier, she had hoped that once things settled down, she could rest more and start prenatal bonding activities for the baby. But that dream was no longer possible.“Freya? What’s on your mind?” Micah noticed her expression and gently asked.Freya shook her head. “It’s nothing. You should get back to work. I’ll be fine on my own.”She held back her tears while he was with her, not wanting to burden him with her sorrow. Once he left, she could finally let herself grieve.“I’ll stay a bit longer,” Micah said, unwilling to leave her alone. As her husband, he knew her well. He could see she was holding something back, and he suspected it had to do with their loss. He couldn’t take away her physical pain, but he could at least offer comfort.Freya saw through his gentle attempt to comfort her and smiled softly. “I just want to nap. Really, there’s no need for you to stay. Do you think I’d lie to you?”Micah drew her close, wrapping

But instead of feeling touched, Vera’s first reaction was nausea. A wave of discomfort surged up from her stomach, and Vera’s face paled. She bolted for the bathroom. Caleb followed quickly. “Are you feeling sick?” “I don’t think so. I’ve been eating normally—nothing too heavy or weird lately.” Vera clutched her stomach, just as confused as he was. Then, a possibility flashed through her mind. Caleb clearly had the same thought. Without a word, he turned and walked into their bedroom, returning moments later with a pregnancy test. Vera looked at him, stunned. “When did you buy that?” He responded matter-of-factly, “Better safe than sorry.” Vera was momentarily speechless. Five minutes later, she stepped out of the bathroom, her hand instinctively resting on her stomach, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief. It was positive. They had only been married for three months. How did this happen so fast?Caleb, on the other hand, remained composed—at le

Of course, Vera wasn’t about to dump all her responsibilities on her assistant. That would be exploitation. She called her assistant into her office. “You’re twenty-five this year, right?” Her assistant blinked, confused. Wasn’t her age common knowledge? Why was Vera suddenly bringing it up? A thought struck her. Was this an arranged marriage situation? Her face immediately filled with silent refusal. “Miss Vera, I’m still young. I’m not thinking about marriage anytime soon.” Vera tapped her pen against the desk. “I’m not telling you to get married.” “Oh.” “I just want to offload some of the smaller daily tasks to you. You don’t have to run every minor document by me.”Her assistant instantly understood. A raise. After confirming she was on board, Vera gave her a salary bump and had her hire a few more assistants to distribute the workload. “If I don’t have time to handle everything, you guys will take care of it. If something’s too complicated, jus

Vera could sense danger the moment the conversation turned in this direction. Her father had never questioned her about married life, and she was lucky enough to avoid nosy relatives. But just because she hadn’t experienced it firsthand didn’t mean she hadn’t seen it happen to others. Without hesitation, she abandoned the half-folded pastry in her hands. “I... uh, need to use the restroom.” Before she could escape, Mrs. Smith caught her wrist. “You and Caleb aren’t getting any younger,” she said matter-of-factly. “You should start thinking about kids—make sure you’re putting in the effort, hmm?” Vera left the kitchen visibly drained. Mrs. Smith was a wonderful mother-in-law, the kind who treated Vera like her own daughter. Despite knowing Vera came from a well-off family, she had still gifted them a house as a wedding present. Of course, Caleb already owned a place, but his mother had insisted. “That’s your house. This is the home I’m giving you as a weddi

That undeniable possessiveness flickered in Caleb’s gaze—subtle yet impossible to ignore. It was the kind of look a powerful man might give his beloved in an old Hollywood film. And right now, the photographer felt like the unlucky bystander who had accidentally stumbled upon an intimate scene. His voice wavered slightly, caught up in his own imagination. “Mr. Smith, lift your eyes toward the camera.” Caleb’s sharp gaze flickered over, intense and commanding. The photographer instinctively pressed the shutter. They continued with several more poses, reviewing the shots as they went. Vera loved them all, but her favorite was still the vintage-inspired one. “How long until we get the final prints?” she asked. “Two to three days at most,” the photographer replied. “I’ll have them shipped directly to you.” Then, after a slight pause, he hesitated before making a request. “I actually have a personal favor to ask—would you both be open to letting us displa

Vera was tempted. They had already taken plenty of wedding photos—several sets at the island, more at the wedding itself. But this wasn’t just any photo studio. It was privately booked and known for being one of the most prestigious studios in the city. Appointments here were nearly impossible to get. The fact that Caleb had managed to secure a session meant he had gone to great lengths to make it happen. If they were just going to take ordinary wedding pictures, it would be a waste of an opportunity. Still, she wasn’t sure what kind of shoot she wanted. The photographer, understanding her hesitation, pulled out a sample album. “You can take a look at our past work. These are some of the styles we’ve done.” Flipping through the pages, Vera saw an array of stunning concepts—each picture more breathtaking than the last. Then, one particular set caught her eye. A Golden Age Hollywood theme. It was classic, nostalgic, and beautifully atmospheric. “Ca

After the wedding, Vera considered taking some time off for a honeymoon. But the thought quickly faded when she realized Caleb had been practically living at the hospital. With a sigh, she dismissed the idea. She was used to it, but to say she wasn’t disappointed would be a lie. Her assistant picked up on it. “Mrs. Smith, don’t you want to go on a honeymoon?” she asked one day. “One of my friends just got married, and she’s been obsessively researching destinations. “She even said a marriage without a honeymoon is already half a failure.” Vera froze mid-page, suddenly losing interest in the documents she had been reviewing. Her assistant hesitated, then offered a suggestion. “Why don’t you go visit Dr. Smith at work?“You seem… distracted. Maybe seeing him will help.” Vera snapped out of her daze, suddenly aware of how preoccupied she had been lately. It was embarrassing to admit, but she had been zoning out far too often—especially after coming hom

Whenever they did this in the past, Caleb always maintained some restraint. But tonight—he didn’t hold back at all. He took her from the bedroom to the bathroom, then back to the bed, his searing kisses trailing every inch of her skin. The next morning, even as she woke up, Vera could still feel the lingering traces of last night’s intoxicating pleasure. As expected, she ended up taking the day off. It wasn’t until two days later that she finally returned to work. *Everyone at the company had already prepared for this. The moment Vera walked into the office, she was greeted with knowing smiles and teasing remarks. “Congratulations, Mrs. Smith!” “Newlywed bliss, huh?” “Three whole days off? Someone had a good time.” It didn’t take a genius to figure out what she had been up to. Obviously, her married life was going exceptionally well—so well that she had completely abandoned work for it. Under the weight of their mischievous stares, Vera barely k

Yelena still hadn’t accepted Hunter, but he wasn’t giving up either and was relentlessly closing in on her. Knowing Yelena’s soft heart, Vera figured it was only a matter of time before she gave in. She let out a sigh. Her friend’s love life wasn’t something she could interfere with. Besides, Caleb had already given her a little inside scoop. “She came to the hospital for a follow-up a few days ago,” he had mentioned casually. “Hunter was the one who brought her.” Vera had clicked her tongue at the news. Yelena always seemed quiet and reserved, but apparently, she was full of surprises.*Time flew by in the blink of an eye.By mid-month, Caleb had rented out an entire vineyard and spent several days transforming it into the perfect wedding venue. When the day arrived, the celebration took place right there. The vineyard was sprawling and elegant, every bit as grand as any luxury hotel—if not better. Even the wine cellar remained untouched, stocked with years-

“Did you plan this from the start?” Vera narrowed her eyes, feeling like she had just walked into a carefully laid trap. “Mm.” Caleb smiled, then leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her lips. Because yes—he had always been planning this. The biggest change in Vera’s life after the island proposal was the ring now sitting on her finger. It wasn’t just any ring. It was custom-made, something Caleb had specially ordered. She only found out by accident when she glanced at his phone one day and saw the purchase record. It had been ordered two months ago. Vera did the math and was stunned. He had been preparing for this long before she even started getting impatient. Her heart swelled with emotion. And as soon as Caleb’s parents heard that their son had finally proposed, they wasted no time pushing them to get the marriage license. *One day, Vera overheard Caleb’s mother lecturing him. “Your dad and I weren’t expecting much from you.
