Chapter 45

The air was thick with tension, the crack of gunfire splitting the silence in sharp intervals. Erica's heart hammered in her chest as she and Julian moved swiftly through the narrow corridors of the safe house. Each step felt like a race against time, a desperate scramble to reach safety before Ophelia's people closed in completely.

Julian glanced at her, his eyes narrowed, jaw set in hard determination. "Keep low," he muttered, barely above a whisper, as another bullet ricocheted off the wall behind them. Erica ducked instinctively, her breath catching in her throat.

They reached the end of the hallway, Julian leading the way toward the rear of the house where the exit should be. But as he pushed open the door leading to the back, they were greeted by the sight of two men, armed and ready, blocking their path.
