‘Those who belittle others are usually so little themselves. Small people belittle others. Great people make others feel they to can become great.’ Quote by Nick Verd.
April barely had time to plaster a small smile on her face, still covering her braces, before they entered the hall. To claps and cheers. In her mind, she had very little to be happy about right now. The way Noah had looked at her made her self-conscious of her overweight body. She didn’t want to be here.
The hard grip Noah had on her hand stopped April from fleeing, which she would love to do if she got the chance.
He brought her around the bridal table and moved her into her seat. She knew it wasn’t a gentlemanly gesture on his part. He was just performing for the crowd, doing what was expected of a happy groom. As soon as he sat down beside her, he immediately turned away to engage in conversation with his best man, Ryan.
April felt incredibly frustrated that she hadn’t been given the opportunity to explain to Noah the reasons behind her decision to marry him. If she had the choice, she wouldn’t do it, at least not at this moment. Noah hadn’t even provided her with the chance to express herself, mistakenly believing that she had handpicked him.
Unfortunately, her father had picked up on how she felt. She would not have chosen this cold, hateful man beside her. Let him believed what he wanted. It wasn’t like he thought much of her, anyway, remembering the conversation between her father and Noah she had overheard.
Her cousin Porsha sat down beside her after circulating the room. She had always been an outgoing and social person, something April herself had never been.
“You’re such a lucky one,” Porsha remarked, her voice barely audible to anyone but April. “How much did your daddy pay to get Noah to marry you?”
April glanced at her cousin briefly, then averted her gaze without uttering a word. The truth was, she didn’t have an answer and preferred not to dwell on it. After all, her cousin’s question hit too close to home, and the thought of others having the same assumption left her feeling embarrassed.
After a few moments, April discreetly excused herself, realizing that nobody was paying her any attention. She gracefully rose from her seat and made her way towards the ladies’ room, noticing that Noah didn’t even glance in her direction. Once she was there, April stood in the stall and tried to figure out how she was to go to the toilet with her full skirt. She stared at the toilet for a full minute before she lifted her dress up at the front and straddled the toilet.
Once she was done, she flushed the toilet and was fixing her dress when the outside door opened. April didn’t want to face anyone right now. The bridal table at least offered some protection. In here, anyone could say anything to her. She decided to wait them out. In the next few seconds, she wished she hadn’t waited because the ladies’ topic of conversation was about her.
“I can’t believe someone as hot as Noah would marry someone like April Harrington.” Said one female voice.
A second lady scoffed. “I heard her father paid him a lot of money. How else would someone as fat and ugly as April end up with someone like him?”
“Would any amount of money be worth it?” asked the first woman.
“Oh, I very much doubt he will sleep with her. It’s business.”
“I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at his best mate, Ryan. He is still on the market.”
“If you wanted to sleep with Noah, I would say he would be willing as well. Just not on the market for marriage. I give it a year at best, before he divorces her. Faster if she pushes for sex.” Both women laughed as they left the bathroom.
April felt like a punching bag with how many attacks on her person by their so-called friends. She knew who they were. The first lady to speak had been her father's second in charges daughter, Tiffany, and the second had been the CFO’s daughter Erin. Even with their fake sweetness to her in the past, she had known they hadn’t truly been her friend, and this just proved it. The worst thing April thought was they were not wrong. Her father had bought Noah, and he hated her.
When April rejoined the bridal table a few minutes later, her face was a smooth mask. She would not let anyone get to her, not even Noah. She just needed to get through today and once her father had his operation and was ok. He had to be ok. She couldn’t envision a life without him, not yet. Then April would start living her life her way. Away from all these fake people.
When Noah got up to talk to some guests, Ryan leaned across Noah’s chair to get her attention. “Are you alright? You seem a little… tense.”
April put on one of her fake smiles. “It’s been a long day.”
Ryan smiled, nodding his head. “I can understand that. Not like I have been through it myself, but I have played best man a few times already. Weddings can make for a very long day.”
April was aware that Ryan was not married and had a similar reputation to Noah, known for being a playboy. “You didn’t bring a date?” April asked him.
Ryan laughed. “No, April. If a man brings a lady to a wedding, it gives them ideas. I like my freedom just the way it is right now, thank you.” He said it in a light tone, giving her a warm smile.
“So you want to marry someday? Don’t answer that if you think I’m being rude by asking.” April added, not wanting to come across as nosy. He was Noah’s best friend, so she was sure she would be seeing him often.
“April, you are not being rude. I think this is the most you have said to me for the entire time I have known you.” Ryan said.
“But you didn’t answer the question.” April pointed out.
Ryan laughed. “Noticed that, did you? The problem is, if I answer the question and someone hears, they might just think it’s an invitation.”
April thought maybe he was right and was about to answer when Porsha said by her side. “April, you already have a husband. Leave poor Ryan alone.”
April rolled her eyes. She wasn’t after Ryan, as Porsha made it sound. Couldn’t she be nice to someone without someone thinking the wrong thing or embarrassing her?
Girls like Porsha liked to be the center of attention. She belittled everyone she thought was beneath her. She was a bitch. April wondered if she would be any nicer to her if she knew April’s father was so sick. Because not every Harrington was filthy rich.
At every family event, Porsha would create some drama, so it was about her. Like today, she had been allowed to pick her own dress. In April’s opinion, it was pretty indecent. Who wore a hot pink dress that was so short and tight to a wedding? It showed her boobs and legs to their best advantage but left very little to the imagination.
Ryan saw her eye roll and grinned at her. Before he looked at her trashy cousin. “Sorry, I like a woman with class.” Looking her up and down before adding. “And taste.”
April almost snorted with laughter. But quickly bit the inside of her mouth to stop herself from doing so. Ryan was being nice to her. That told her that Noah hadn’t confided in him about their little drama. It wasn’t something she wanted to share herself, so she was glad he hadn’t. It was bad enough that everyone was guessing her father had paid Noah to marry her.
April watched in fascination as Porsha’s mouth fell open at the shock that someone would insult her so openly. She was a member of the Harrington family, and no one dared to insult a Harrington. However, the issue was that Porsha had not yet realized that she was not as significant in terms of the Harrington’s wealth or influence.
April had no doubt she was the apple of her parents’ eye. But then Dad’s much younger brother David thought the sun shone out of his ass as well. So Porsha hadn’t fallen far from the tree. It was rude to say, but if her aunt had any more plastic surgery, April was in fear of her face falling off. Why couldn’t people just age gracefully?
“What did you just say to me?” Porsha said in an almost silent scream. It was like Ryan’s comment had literally rendered her voiceless. Clearly taken aback by his audacity in her eyes.
“Oh Porsha, you may think you are all that. But you are nothing but a cheap imitation of who you are trying to portray. Please don’t waste your time or mine to think I would ever look at you twice. I’m not interested in women that embarrass others so carelessly. It shows me you need to grow the fuck up.” Ryan said, before dismissing her with a wave of his hand.
April had to admit she was stunned by Ryan's ability to see through Porsha so well. Her cousin was clearly at a loss for words because she just went away with her tail between her legs.
April almost felt like cheering. Maybe it was mean of her, but her cousin had always taken every opportunity to hurt her and make her feel unloved and ugly. No, she wasn’t any fashion plate, but in her eyes you didn’t do that to family.
William shook Noah's hand as he moved towards him. “Here.” William handed Noah a file. “A promise is a promise.”
Noah took the file and opened it. Only to see the William had been true to his word. This was his debt to William wiped clean. It was a weight lifted off his shoulders. “When is your operation due to take place?”
“I’m booked in for two days’ time. I will need you to be there for April if it doesn’t go well. I can’t put it off any longer.”
“You’re a silly old man, William. You shouldn’t have waited the four weeks as it is.” Noah said.
“I wanted April married.” William looked around the room, making sure no one could overhear his next words. “Not all my family could be trusted. I know if anything happens to me, you will protect April from them.”
Sighing, Noah knew William was talking about his younger brother and family. Then why had William allowed Porsha to be April’s bridesmaid? Thinking about it, Noah got the answer before he even voiced the question. Keep your enemies close. Yes, Noah could see David Harrington as someone to watch out for and keeping them close to make sure you were always aware of what the family was up to.

‘And I finally let go. It was the beginning for me and the end for you.’ Quote by Nikki Rowe.Noah had booked them into the honeymoon suite of his hotel because it was expected by their guests that they should stay the night. As they walked into the luxurious rooms. He couldn’t help but sense the tension emanating from April. It was almost tangible. What was she expecting him to do? Jump her the minute the door closed. But there was no chance of him sleeping with her. The last thing he was interested in was a schemer! She was a manipulative little bitch who had gotten her father to hand her the husband she wanted. It would be a cold day in hell before he allowed another lying cold-hearted bitch in his bed again. Ashley in university had shown him to watch out for women. But he had let April slip under his guard because he had thought her too young and naïve to play games.“You don’t have to worry. I have no intention of exercising my marital rights with you tonight or any other night.”
‘It’s all right to put on the weight of the world on your shoulders sometimes, if you know how to take it off.’ Quote by James Patterson.“Hey May, are you ready to go out tonight and party?” April glanced up from her book and grinned at her friend Trent, who had plonked down beside her. He gestured with his hand, miming drinking. May was the name she used at university.“Definitely.” April scanned the courtyard, observing students lounging on the lawns of the university campus. Exams were finally over and everyone was relaxed. Some would leave the university, while others would return next year. Who would have imagined four years ago that she would graduate with an MBA someday?Initially, she had enrolled in the program to prove to everyone that she could do anything. But it hadn’t taken long for her to fall in love with every minute of her studies. She hadn’t wanted to trade in on her family’s name. So she had used her middle name of May, which had in fact been her grandmother’s name
‘Life is like a roller coaster, live it, be happy, enjoy life.’ Quote by Avril Lavigne.Because Poppy’s place was the closest to the club, they had all decided to get ready there. With Poppy’s name, anyone would think she should be a redhead, but she wasn’t. She was blonde and tall and gorgeous. Beautiful with her even features and bright blue eyes. She had always had men chasing her around campus. Not even the thought of her having a baby at home had put them off. Tonight she wasn’t playing her look down like she normally did. Because they were making April wear a dress, she was making them wear dresses as well.April looked down at the green silk dress that hugged every curve. “Are you sure about this? I mean, it’s short.”Poppy laughed. “Not as short as it was on me. But that was a lifetime ago. Plus, it brings out your green eyes. Makes them seem brighter.”April looked over at her friend. On her the dress stopped mid-thigh, but on Poppy’s tall elegant figure, the dress would be a
‘Friendship isn’t a big thing - it’s a million little things. Quote by Paulo Coelho.Noah settled down on to the lounge in the VIP area of Twister. Looking around, he liked the nightclub it had character.Noah had inherited the club when he had purchased the hotel it was attached to. Upgrading the hotel to match its historical significance, but Twister was left largely untouched. He arranged for a small renovation, a fresh coat of paint and new bathrooms. But unfortunately, with the increase of wealthy guest staying at the hotel, the cliental had changed Twister from a uni bar to a trendy place to be.Noah had almost choked when he had seen the prices of the drinks. That’s not what he had discussed with the bar manager. Noah had wanted to keep the cost down for the uni crowd. He remembered what it was like going to university with not a lot of money. It was something he would be fixing. First thing tomorrow. He had already emailed his manager to meet him in the morning. So what if rich
April danced with her friends, moving along with the beat as she let the rhythm carry her, lost in the moment. The neon lights of the nightclub flickered around her, picking up the bright colors on the dance floor. She felt great. She had finished university with honors. The few drinks she allowed herself had helped her relax enough that she could temporarily put aside her worries about her father for tonight. She would resume worrying about him tomorrow. He was normally the first thing she thought of every morning. Glad she hadn’t received a phone call from the hospital during the night. Her alcohol induced confidence radiating from every movement. Poppy, Sophie, and Trent danced nearby, their laughter lost because of the volume of the music. Poppy made sure she kept her back to the VIP area the entire time and her laugh was a little forced, but April was the only one that noticed. Her friend hadn’t wanted to leave, even when April offered to cover for her. Shrugging if Poppy felt she
‘Chemistry is you touching my arm and it setting fire to my mind.’ Quote by Nayyirah Waheed.Noah watched while security pulled the piece of shit off the floor and none to gently dragging the guy to the exit. He wondered how he was going to get her alone? He watched her for a second. “Ryan, Max, I’ll meet you back in the VIP area soon. I just need to get May…. was it?”April nodded, keeping her back to Ryan. Because she knew him. Noah hadn’t realized who she was. Why should he? She just couldn’t take the chance of Ryan seeing her as well. That just upped the chance of getting recognized.“.. some ice for her knee.”It was then that April realized she was still rubbing her bruised knee. Pulling her hand away. She was about to say she was fine when he turned to her friends.“Are you May’s friends?” he said to Sophie and Trent. At their nods. “Sorry about tonight. Your drinks are on me for the unpleasantness.” Before anyone had a chance to say anything, he put an arm around April’s waist
“Perfect,” Noah said, grabbing her hand. “Let’s go.”Noah then put his arm securely around April’s waist as he guiding her around to the front door of the hotel. Their bodies pressed close together as they crossed the foyer of the hotel. The woman at the reception desk lifted her head and turned towards them when she heard April’s heels clicking on the tile flooring. A bright smile appeared on her face as she saw Noah. However, her smile faded slightly as her eyes moved to April, and she gave her a quick once-over. She had a disapproving look on her face.Noah’s hand slid down her back, his touch sent shivers up her spine. He watched her, not the woman behind the counter.God, she hoped the woman didn’t think she was a prostitute. Looking down at how she was dressed. No, her dress wasn’t cheap or tasteless. It was well made. So maybe the woman thought she was an escort. That wasn’t any better.April thought about it for a second. Did she really care? It wasn’t like she was ever going t
Noah’s lips crashed down on hers. April could taste herself on his lips, her senses exploding with excitement. His hands roamed her body, exploring every curve, every inch of skin. She gasped into his mouth, her hands clutching at his bare shoulders.“God, you’re incredible,” Noah murmured against her lips. “Touch me.”April blinked. Did he mean down there? She could feel his cock pressing against her thigh. Did he want her to do to him what he had just done to her? April’s mind went blank for a moment. She didn’t know if she could. She might give herself away, but if she told him she didn’t know how to give head, then that would lead to questions she didn’t want to answer.“Fuck,” Noah whispered, his eyes dark and gruff with desire. “You’re perfect.”April whimpered as his hands returned to her breasts, squeezing and kneading the soft flesh. She could feel his erection straining against his boxers, a reminder of the raw need driving them both.“Please,” she begged, as his fingers pinc
April adjusted the cuffs of her blazer, smoothing the lapels as she stared at her reflection in the floor-to-ceiling windows of Harrington Enterprises’ top-floor boardroom. The city skyline stretched behind her, but she barely saw it. Today wasn’t just any meeting… it was war.She had been expecting resistance, but the more she uncovered, the more disgusted she became. Her uncle, David Harrington, had been scheming for years, waiting for the day her father would pass so he could claim what he saw as his rightful place. But William Harrington had left everything to April. The company. The shares. The legacy. And David was furious.April turned away from the window, her heart steady despite the storm brewing inside. Across the boardroom table sat the key players in today’s power struggle. Her former father’s right-hand man, Fred Coolman, the now-disgraced CFO, Mitchell Grant, and a handful of board members she knew had aligned with them. They just didn’t know it yet. They had no idea sh
The laughter still echoed through April’s brownstone as the night stretched on, the conversation growing more relaxed now that the big revelation was out in the open. April had expected more resistance, more anger, but after the initial shock, her friends had simply adjusted. It was strange…almost too easy, but maybe that was what real friendship was. They had known her for a few years now, after all. May Jones, April Harrington, like Tally had said, she was still the same person.Trent leaned back against the couch, swirling his wine. “You know, I keep thinking about something.”April sighed, already bracing herself. “Should I be worried?”Trent smirked. “You’re always worried. But no, it’s just… I remember reading some gossip piece a few years back about you. April Harrington… I mean, you.”April tensed, her fingers tightening around the stem of her glass. “Oh?”Poppy arched a brow. “Wait, I remember that too. Something about April Harrington getting married to some rich heir and the
April wiped her hands on a kitchen towel, glancing at the dining table one last time. Everything was perfect. The table was set; the wine was breathing, and the scent of roasted garlic and herbs filled the air.So why did she feel like she was about to walk into an ambush?“April, breathe,” Tally’s voice cut through her spiraling thoughts.April turned to where Tally stood at the counter, slicing fresh bread with practiced ease. Unlike April, who had been running around the kitchen for the past ten minutes like a chicken with its head cut off, Tally looked completely relaxed.“I am breathing,” April muttered, running her hands over the front of her dress. “I just... I don’t know how they’re going to take this.”Tally had offered to be here tonight. A quiet pillar of support for what April was worried about what would be a difficult conversation. How did you explain to your friends that you’d been keeping your identity a secret? That the May Jones they had known for years was actually A
Noah pulled up in front of Ryan and Tally’s house for the second time in a week. But this time, his gut wasn’t twisting with dread. He wasn’t walking into a nightmare. No life-shattering news awaited him.And yet, he still sat in his car for a moment, gripping the wheel, exhaling slowly as if trying to steady himself. His mind was still reeling from what he had learned the last time he was here. He had fathered a child—a child he had never known about, never even had the chance to fight for. And now, he never would. That reality wasn’t something he could just shake off. It clung to him, burrowed deep into his chest like a wound that refused to close. The fact that he had been kept in the dark only made his hatred for Ashley even more raw.But he wasn’t here to drown in that grief today. He had drunk enough this past week to sink any ship. But it hadn’t helped. He needed to deal with it and move on. Like Ryan had. For years, his best friend had believed the baby was his. Then Ryan had t
Noah pulled up to Ryan and Tally’s house, cutting the engine. He sat there for a moment, gripping the steering wheel, his gut twisting. Something was off. He had heard it in Ryan’s voice when he called earlier today.“Come over for dinner,” Ryan had said. “There’s something we need to talk about. Something I need to tell you. Something I should have told you sooner.” And that was the problem. They were close, always had been. Ryan could tell him anything, and yet here Noah was, parked outside his friend’s house, gut churning with unease. It had been two days since William’s funeral. If Ryan had waited this long, it meant whatever he had to say wasn’t just important—it was something Noah wasn’t going to like.Exhaling sharply, Noah pushed open the car door. Before he could even knock, the front door swung open. Tally stood there, arms crossed, her expression too careful, too controlled. That was the second sign something was wrong.“Hey, Noah.” Her voice was soft, deliberate. His brows
April’s hands curled into fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms as she stared at the man in front of her. The man who had been her husband for four years. The man who had humiliated her, ignored her, and lived his life as if she had never existed.“I can get a divorce if I want one, Noah. Nothing can stop me. You think this changes anything?” she asked, voice sharp. “You think just because you found out who I am, suddenly things are different?”Noah’s jaw tightened. “I think it changes everything.”April let out a bitter laugh. “Of course you do. Because now the joke isn’t on you anymore, right?” She took a step closer, anger and hurt burning inside her. “But let me ask you this, Noah. Would anything have changed if you had known back then? Would you have treated me differently? Or would you have still taken my father’s money and done exactly what you did?”His eyes flickered with frustration. “April—”“You did take the money, didn’t you?” she pressed, her voice shaking.
Noah stared at the woman in front of him.April.May.They were the same person. His chest tightened as he stared at her—the long black hair spilling over her shoulders, the striking sea-green eyes he could lose himself in. His mind reeled, scrambling to make sense of it, but the truth was already staring him in the face. The lighting in the club that night and later had been terrible. If he had seen her eyes in daylight, he would have known. He took a few more steps forward, making sure he wasn’t seeing things. No. It was plain as day now.Standing in front of him was the woman he had been trying to find for months.May Jones was April Harrington. He hadn’t slept with some stranger in a nightclub. He had slept with his wife.April’s expression shifted from surprise to guarded caution as she stood from the chaise lounge, her movements slow. She didn’t take her eyes off him. She didn’t speak right away, but he saw the tension in her frame, the way her fingers clenched at her sides.“Noa
April held her ground as David’s furious gaze bore into her, his entire body tense with barely contained rage. The night air felt charged, thick with the weight of unsaid threats.April arched a brow at his last words. She would not regret anything when it came to him, refusing to let him see even a flicker of fear. “Don’t worry, David. I’ve never needed your help before, and I certainly won’t start now.”His jaw tightened, his hands curling into fists, and for a brief second, she thought he might actually lose control. But before he could take another step toward her, Noah moved.Quick. Decisive. One second, he was standing beside Ryan, and the next, he was in front of her, blocking David’s path entirely. His voice was calm, but there was a lethal edge beneath it.“I suggest you walk away before you say something you’ll regret.”David let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “You think I’m afraid of you, boy?”Noah tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable. “No. I think you should
The manor was filled with murmurs and the clinking of glasses as mourners settled into the grand halls and sitting rooms, drinking her father’s expensive whiskey and picking at the catered food. April moved through the crowd with a practiced ease, nodding politely when necessary but never stopping long enough for conversation. The years she had been away, she had learnt how to handle crowds. How to be polite during social gatherings. A funeral was no different. She had barely had a moment to breathe since the reading of the will. The weight of her father’s empire sat on her shoulders now, and she could already feel the vultures circling. Her uncle. His wife. Their spoiled daughter. Plus, she watched her father’s second in charge and CFO and their families.Let’s not forget the extended family that had only ever cared about William Harrington for what he could offer them. They were all here, their condolences empty, their eyes sharp with greed.Spotting Tally and Ryan near the grand fir
