CHAPTER FOUR
All the members of the Skull Rogues were dying strange deaths.
It was a mystery to decipher, but an unexplainable affliction had begun to sweep through the rogue pack, claiming numerous lives per day.
The sounds of pains and sufferings filled the air and the sickly scent of death spread through the territory.
Some of them would convulse uncontrollably to their deaths, others would have their bodies begin to rot while they were still alive, life ebbing out of them until they succumbed to death. Some would suddenly just drop dead without any prior symptoms.
The rogue healers had never seen anything like this before. They were baffled by what had befallen them, and their attempt at remedies had proved futile.
No one could understand what was happening neither could they phantom where the strange affliction had stemmed from.
However, only one man knew the source of the plague as he had been the one to orchestrate the curse that befell the Skull Rogues.
That man was the same one who had found his pregnant wife dead in the middle of the forest.
He was also the same one who had sworn revenge over the Skull Rogues.
And yes, the very same one who was hell–bent on wiping each and every one from the face of the earth.
As expected, he was doing just that.
Knox's thirst for vengeance was unquenchable and he had gone to far–lengths to ensure he got his pound of flesh. How dare they kill his wife and his unborn heir?
That same night after he had found her body, he had immediately sought the services of a powerful witch doctor and his task for her was simple.
Wipe out every member of the skull rogues.
Hence, the plague that ravaged their territory.
And even though the death of the Skull Rogues couldn't fill the void his loss had created, at least, he had been able to finally grant his heart's desires.
It gave him so much delight.
In their dimly lit room, Zena's voice trembled with desperation as she whispered some sacred, healing incantation over Eli's dying form.
Eli was Aster's sister. And she loved the little girl so much, however, the plague had eaten deep into her and the poor girl was barely hanging unto life.
Surprisingly so, Zena and Aster hadn't shown any symptoms of being affected by the plague. The sorcerers had said that it was most likely that the Moon Goddess had showered favour upon them and decided to let them be unharmed.
However, it didn't mean that they both couldn't feel the pain of others. Especially now, when Eli was about to die.
"Hang on, Eli. I won't let this sickness take you away from me. Please, don't give up. " Zena spoke amidst her incantations; they weren't working, nothing was working. The little girl was still in a vegetable state, her form lean and emaciated as her body convulsed.
Aster stood nearby, his jaw clenched and his fists balled at his sides. "Isn't there anything else you can do? Please, Dave her."
Her gaze flickered up and met Aster's, "I'm trying all I can. The healers have also done their best, nothing was working. This is a healing incantation I learnt from my mother, she always performed it on me whenever I was sick and it worked." her gaze then lowered to Eli and a frown downturned her lips, "but it's not working for her. This plague is unlike anything I've seen before."
The sick girl's laboured breath filled the air, her eyes wide and darting, as if trying to escape her turmoil within and her limbs jerked without stopping .
Zena took a deep breath to calm her anxious nerves and then, she continued to circle her finger around Eli's forehead in gentle motions as she spoke the incantations.
But just as before, it didn't work. The girl's convulsions seemed to become more violent, her legs thrashing as soft whimpers escaped her lips and her mouth foamed.
Aster's frustration tipped over, his voice thundering, "Damn it, Zena! We can't lose her. She's the only family I have left."
Her gaze softened as she retracted her finger from the forehead of the trembling girl, "I know, Aster. I care for her too. But I think it's time we face the possibility that—"
"No!" Aster's voice cracked as his fist banged on a nearby table, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "There must be something we can do."
His shoulders slumped as he stepped forward, beholding his sick sister, "I can't let her go, Zena. I just can't."
Her gaze shifted between Aster and Eli. She knew that there was no saving this girl, she was gone. It couldn't be helped. Why were they even bothering? Since the plague had befallen their pack, no one had survived it.
What made her think she could save Eli?
With a heavy heart, Zena rose up from her crouched position beside Eli's frail form. She wouldn't want to witness Eli's death, and it was only a matter of minutes before it would occur.
She didn't glance back, neither did she utter a single word and with that, she left the room. Aster's eyes followed her movements as she walked out of the room. He wanted to call out to her, to beg her to stay but he could understand the reason for her reaction.
No one would want to witness the death of a loved one.
As she reached the doorway, she paused, her hand hovering near the doorframe as she debated if she should leave or not.
One could say it was her fault—after all, it was because she killed Lydia that Knox bestowed the curse upon them.
She wished she could feel some level of guilt, however, she couldn't. She had to avenge her mother's death and not only would she stop there, no. Knox was biting more than he could chew, and she could not let her people's deaths, Eli's death to be in vein.
She would strike.
So, her fists not clenched at her sides, she continued her exit and disappeared from Aster's sight.
However, Aster wasn't as hardened as Zena and his approach towards the situation was very different. He didn't want to wage war against Knox as revenge for, because that would just cause more people to die.
And he valued his people more than anything in the world. He would do anything just to them them safe.
He looked down at Eli, his heart aching as he held her limp hand. And then, he made the decision in his heart. He was going to reason with Knox, beg for his forgiveness, so he could pardon the lives of his people.

After a few excruciating hours of traveling, Aster finally arrived in front of the Alpha's palace. Anxiety twisted in his gut and he felt a shiver run down his spine as he felt uneasy about the meeting he was about to have.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" He heard the voice of a soldier ask and he turned back, seeing that he had already drawn out his sword from his sheath, pointing it at him.
Aster raised his hand up in surrender, "I come in peace." He declared. He was masked and he had also hidden his scent, so no one could easily tell it was him. "I'm here to see Alpha Knox. It's important."
"Hmm." The familiar voice of the Alpha mused and Aster looked sideways, seeing Alpha Knox and his twin, Kylian approaching. "You want to see me?"
Aster gave a curt nod.
Alpha Knox accessed the masked man in front of him. It didn't take him much time to decipher that it was Aster—the man was foolish for only hiding his scent when he got to the palace, and not while he journeyed here. Knox had perceived the scent of the Skull Rogue a distance away.
His lips curled into a smirk and then he faced the guard, "Let him be." he commanded and the guard nodded, stepping away from Aster and returning back to his position.
Knox's cold eyes assessed Aster again, his smirk growing wider. "What brings you to my palace, Aster?" He drawled his name in a manner that let Aster know that he knew his identity.
Aster had to maintain his composure, not wanting to show the shock that had stemmed from being identified by Knox.
Swallow hard, he gathered his resolve. "I am here because there is something g utmost importance that I need to discuss with you." his voice wavered slightly as he spoke, betraying the calm and collected appearance he had tried to potray.
Kylian's gaze flickered between the two, his features unreadable. He exchanged a brief glance with his brother before taking a step back, allowing Knox to take the lead.
Knox's gaze returned back to Aster and he gave a nod, signalling for him to continue.
Aster took a steadying breathe before continuing, "I know the plague that has befallen my people is an act of retaliation, because of your wife's death." he began. "But we're suffering and, I've come to beg. Please, reconsider. Some of the people who are suffering aren't part of the warriors who had fought—they're innocent women and children. Consider them, please."
Knox's lips formed a thin line as he absorbed Aster's words. This was the moment he had been waiting for, surrender. And oh, was he going to milk this opportunity dry.
However, first things first, he had to subject the same pain his wife had gone through unto the very one who had made her feel that pain.
Alpha Knox crossed his arms, his smirk returning back to his lips, "Maybe I will consider lifting the plague, if you deliver the person who had killed my wife into my hands." He bargained and Aster's eyes widened in horror beneath his mask, another shiver licking his spine.
How the hell was he supposed to deliver his mate into the hands of his enemy?
Eli had succumbed to the illness and passed away the next day; just a few hours ago, just at the breaking of dawn. Following the traditions of the rogue pack, she was buried immediately. Women weren't allowed to attend the burial no matter what, unless it was the mother or sisters of the deceased. Aster's parents were no more and they had no other siblings, so the burial was facilitated by Water and a few other elders. Zena sat on a stool in the living area, gazing out of window as her thoughts roamed. It was midnight and she was unable to sleep. How could she sleep when the cheerful voice that gladdened her heart would never be heard again? She had loved Eli like she would love her own daughter and her passing had created an irreplaceable void in her heart. Her face scrunched into a scowl as her mind drifted to Alpha Knox and his family. They were the reason why Eli was no longer with her. Why were they hellbent on taking away everyone who was dear to her? She couldn't let
CHAPTER SIX Zena's jaw dropped in sheer surprise as her eyes widened in horror. But she didn't want to believe it was true. She shook her head vigorously as she took , not wanting to believe what was happening. No, this must be a nightmare. Of course, people had very scary nightmares when they were dealing with grief, the loss of a loved one—she knew that experience firsthand as she dealt with the loss of her mother. However, this felt real. It was real. Aster was betraying her, leading her right into the enemy's arms. What a bastard. Why? Why had he done that? What was his reason? Her whole mind was a whirlwind of thoughts a she sought to understand the reason behind his action. "No, Aster, this can't be true. You can't just hand me over to him." She shook her head in disbelief again. As if on cue, a chilling breeze swept through the forest, and a sinister chuckle filled the air. "Oh, but he can." Zena's heart pounded as the voice seemed to echo from all directions, and t
Zena let out a loud scream as a sharp, piercing pain suddenly sprung up in her chest. It felt as though her heart was being torn apart, shredded into tiny pieces. She had never felt such pain before, it was far greater than an average physical discomfort. She continued to scream as the pain reverberated all through her body. She shut her eyes in a tight grimace as she gritted her teeth, the agony was crippling. Just then, another scream emitted from the crowd. Their attention left Zena and faced Aster, whom the scream came from. He staggered back, his face contorting in agony. His hands went to his head, fingers clutching at his hair as if trying to hold himself together. Their mate bond had been severed. They were both experiencing the excruciating pain that was associated with it. A strangled cry escaped Zena's lips as she dipped her head, facing the ground. It wasn't helping matters that she was going through the physical and emotional pains. Here she was, dealing with the
Hmm. It would be better if what Aster was suspecting was just a factor that stemmed from his overthinking tendencies and not that it was the actual truth. Had Knox double-crossed him?He had let the skull rogues settlement and had ventured into the night, heading to where Knox would most likely be during the midnights. His training ground. He had to do his findings to make sure that he had not changed the location of his training grounds after Zena’s attack. Since he had not, he made his way through the dew–kissed bushes to have an impromptu meeting with Knox.He had delivered Zena Into Knox’s hands four days ago. And Knox had promised to lift the curse but as of yesterday only, twenty five deaths were recorded. His people were dying. Hell, he had given up a mate as powerful as Zena just to save their asses. He chuckled at the thought of Zena; the woman doesn’t even know what she possessed. If only Zena knew just how great, how powerful she was…Well, such a shame that she didn’t.
She would've never in her wildest imaginations thought that Knox would eventually win this war. Needless to talk about how much she had hated him and his family, she had always thought that she would be able to get revenge over all they had done to her people and…her mother. But here she was, tied up and about to be slaughtered like feast meat. Her heart pounded like a frantic drum inside her chest. A gathering of curious onlookers had assembled. They had all come from all walks of life in the Blue Moon Kingdom, from warriors and common folk to nobles, each drawn to the spectacle of the trouble–causing rogues' leader's downfall.Zena stood in the center of the execution ground, the tight and thorny ropes around her wrists were biting into her skin and might as well just kill her before the knife does. But she wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of seeing her falter, of seeing her break down into tears. No, she won't. It was already enough humiliation that she was about to di
CHAPTER TENThe truth was that Zena would've preferred being beheaded as opposed to serving Knox and his family. To her, the humiliation that would stem from that was far worse than death. Dying by your enemy's sword was one thing, being their possession was a whole other thing. A worse one. That was all she thought about as she felt the hardened grips of the palace guards around her arm, hoisting her up from the ground and leading her away from the center. The verdict had been passed and there was nothing he could do about it. Fucking Aster, the bastard was the cause of all of this. He was greedy, that was how Zena had concluded on the situation. And now, his greediness had made him to lose his life and the life of other's as well. Not to mention loosing her too; was she even worth adding to the things Aster had lost? Now that she reflected on it, Aster never really actually loved her. He was more of a friend than a lover—a forced friend, if you will. It seemed that everything
The sounds of footsteps knocked Zena out of her thoughts and her gaze slowly lifted to meet the young woman. Her gaze was fixated on her cheek and she pointed at it, "Your cheek. It's bleeding." She stated. Zena blinked in surprise and then her fingers trailed along the path, picking up a stain of blood. She hadn't noticed, she must've scratched her skin from the way the guards had roughly pushed her into the room. Closing her eyes for a moment, she concentrated and allowed her ability to flow. As her fingers laid upon the injury, the small cut sealed itself and left a faint scar. Zena opened her eyes again, her expression remaining stoic and the woman still in front of her. She looked her age—nineteen, twenty and at most twenty–two. But she seemed quite malnourished, sje must've been in their custody for quite sometime as she had already emaciated a lot. She had dirty blonde hair, hazel eyes that had lost their sparkle and oh, a nasty injury on her leg. It was an old injury that
The grand doors to the palace's main corridor burst open. Two guards with their tight grips against Zena's arms came through as they dragged the woman down the hallway. She was arrested and on her way to Alpha Knox for questioning. From the fact that she was suddenly missing earlier that morning and the piece of servant cloth that was found near Knox's three year old's bed, Zena was off course the first suspect on the list. She had tried to protest but it all fell on deaf ears, no one would believe that the one who was capable of killing the King's luna—pregnant Luna, to be precise—wouldn't be able to kill his son. It was reported that the boy was supposedly poisoned. As there was no use for futile resisting, Zena succumbed to arrest and was ready to take her chances with Knox. The truth was that she hadn't killed the man's son – if she had wanted to, she would've done it in a way that wouldn't have her arrested less than an hour later. Her gaze caught the passing figure of Jane, w
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWOJane's attempt to break Zena's resolve on the plan was useless and it bothered her that she had no idea how Kylian would react to it. He had gone out of his way to devise such a brilliant plan to help a servant of low status as them, and Zena's insistent refusal just might make him furious and resolve not to help them ever again.Cathleen observed closely from a distance, trying to figure out what the two were up to. They had ventured far into the fields and any attempt of hers to go after them could get her caught. The grasses were dry and her steps would easily be detected. It infuriated her that she had no werewolf abilities of her own to tap into. Yes, she was born to a werewolf mother, but her father was human, the only human who had survived even after being exposed to the supernatural realm of werewolves.Apparently, relationships between werewolves and humans were a huge taboo in the kingdom, and anyone caught in such a web was punished by the people and the
CHAPTER THIRTY ONE“Did you enjoy your little nap, Zena?” Knox’s voice was laced with a cruel amusement that infuriated Zena. He strolled casually into the room, his gaze fixated on her with unsettling intensity. Zena refused to display any hint of fear. She glared back at him, her eyes filled with defiance.“I wouldn’t dare come close to me if I were you.” She sprung to her feet and retrieved the weapon she had hidden in her waistband, brandishing it at him. Knox chuckled, enjoying the exchange of hostility. “You underestimate me, Zena. I’ve got plans for you, grand plans that will make you regret ever crossing my path.”Zena knew beyond reasonable doubt that Knox was not one to make empty threats. The only way to be free from his wrath was by escaping or the death of either one of them. She observed as Knox’s expression darkened, his amusement replaced by anger. His eyes darted to the ruined portrait, and she knew what was coming next. Kylian’s call had intercepted whatever action h
CHAPTER THIRTYKylian paced restlessly in his chambers, the situation at hand was getting more complicated than he had thought it would be. Precisely speaking, his brother’s obsession with Zena was getting out of hand, and he feared the repercussions it could have on the kingdom. Whatever this was was not just about them alone, but Knox would not see past his strong-headedness.He recalled his secret promise to himself to help Zena escape before he embarked on his journey up North, now seemed like the right time to fulfill that promise but he needed to be discreet about it. There should be no loopholes in his plan for Knox to connect the dots to him.As he considered his plan, he realized that involving Jane, who had shown genuine concern for Zena, could be key to executing the escape plan. Her loyalty to Zena might prove instrumental to a successful escape plan. However a doubt lingered in his mind, he had responded coldly toward her when she first approached him, he worried that she
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINEJane, unable to contain her fear any longer, rushed to Kylian for help. He had always helped Zena get out of trouble, it is possible that he would this time too. He was her only hope. Despite her low status, she slipped through the shadows, making her way to Kylian’s chamber with hopes of finding him there. She was halted by the men that stood guard at the entrance. She could not afford to tell them the purpose of her visit, but her appearance was a reflection of how worried and distraught she was. The guards immediately sent her away but she lurked in the premises, keeping watch at the door. For several hours, there was still no sign of Kylian. Jane could not help but imagine what troubles Zena must be faced with at the moment. As the night deepened, Kylian finally emerged from his chamber. Jane wasted no time to seize the opportunity. She approached him with an urgency that could not be ignored. The guards tried to stop her from getting too close but Kylian signa
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHTThe bellowing afternoon sun cast its warm glow over the Blue Moon Kingdom. Knox found himself nursing a nagging headache from the night’s excessive drinking. His eyes were heavy and his mind clouded with the haunting images of his deceased wife and child. The weight of grief and guilt pressed on him, and he struggled to overcome the emotional distress that gripped his soul. His mind was vague of anything else that had happened the morning of it; he had no recollection of his meltdown in the presence of his brother Kylian, but his oath of vengeance tarried in his mind. It was all he could think of. The festival preparations continued outside a stranger to the internal struggle that plagued the palace walls.Knox tried to pull himself together, but his limbs were still too weak to carry him, his vision blurred, and each step he tried to take was even harder than the last. Kylian walked in with a maid carrying a tray of silverware in her hands, her head lowered as sh
CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN"Well, since we are in the middle of asking trivia, do you mind explaining to me why you had her released from the dungeon without my knowledge? Or why you concealed the identity of the one who had attacked you in the woods, that had sent you to the brink of death?" Knox asked, trying to contain his rising fury.Nothing prepared Knox for the response Kylian would disclose to his question. Never in a million years would he have thought the person behind his brothers' attack was a member of the Black Moon Kingdom. How were they able to penetrate through the defenses of the Blue Moon Kingdom? Why did he not pick up any unfamiliar scent in the woods where they had found Kylian's unconscious body? It was possible that the attacker had masked his scent, which was a well-known werewolf thing to do when advancing into enemy territory.Still, nothing about his claim made any sense and it bothered Knox greatly. Knox housed an eerie feeling that he couldn't quite place his f
CHAPTER TWENTY SIXJane kept all of Zena's instructions in mind. She tailed the woman closely like a leech that could not be gotten rid of but there was nothing suspicious she could find about her.It was almost evening and nothing new that could help Zena's case had been found. Worried lines plastered on her face as she observed the woman from behind the barrels of wine in the wine press. She bit her nails nervously, trying to think of something that would push the lady to move recklessly while under her watch but no idea formed in her head.On the brink of time, when all hope seemed to be lost, luck seemed to shine on her. A strange face that Jane had never before seen on the palace grounds appeared from the back door. He had a crooked look and limped as he walked, his clothes looked pretty decent but nothing about him gave her a good feeling. She observed closely the transaction that ensued between them. As he approached with an air of suspicion, the woman's discomfort deepened, fe
Zena did not know what to make of the revelation she had just heard. Her heart ached for Marilyn and her unborn child. She and her boyfriend only tried to do what any other parent would, something she totally resonated with. Not beacsue she is or was a parent but because watching over the Skull Rogues, she had kind of assumed that role to the point where she was more than ready to lay her life down for them. It wasn’t any much different from what Marilyn and her boyfriend were in.Her heart skipped as it dawned on her that she Marilyn and her boyfreund were in possible danger. Knox was still investigating the matter relentlessly and if he were to figure out that Marilyn and her boyfriend were also in the area and were attempting to flee, there was no telling what he would do to them and their unborn child. Her protective instincts kicked in and she felt the need to protcetd them at all costs from Knox’s fury.Zena’s steps were slow, at a deliberate pace, her mind obviously deep in tho
CHAPTER TWENTY FOURThe full moon festival was coming up in a week; it was a very big celebration for the Blue Moon Kingdom. Anticipation of the upcoming event hung in the air like the buzzing sound of bees. Everyone hummed with excitement as they busied themselves, eagerly preparing for the event. The work at the servant quarters tripled, each one joggling different tasks, as they could handle.Zena was in the middle of the whole thing. Her tasks were way more than that of the other servants if they were to be compared. She shuffled between going to the market to pick up groceries to pulling down, washing, and fixing up new draping on the palace grounds. Her countless attempts to shift some of the responsibilities to others who weren’t as busy as her proved futile. The only person willing to offer a hand was Jane but she had been moved to a different section of the palace for other work. She was halfway done with the draping when one of her superiors, a woman assumed to be in her thi
