Chapter 10: First Meeting, Part 2

Years ago, I used to take the deer meat to orphanages to feed the hungry bellies of the children. At that time, the caregivers welcomed any food donations they could get, for it was difficult to provide enough food to feed forty some children. They didn't ask questions. Today, there were no more orphanages, but if there were, they would ask too many questions, questions I couldn't answer. There were laws against it, as well.

The white-tailed deer wasn't much of a challenge, but I had already had my workout for the night. After I had my fill, I wiped a spot of crimson blood from my lips. Evergreens brushed past me in a blur as I ran, quickly making my way back home. Home. We had just arrived and already I thought of it as home. Twenty minutes later, I walked into the front door of our cottage. It was really more like a mansion, but there was something about the stone walls that made me think of it as a cottage.

"Well ..." Rick was waiting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee, probably not having rested, not that he needed any. Looking around, Rick must have worked through the night making the house livable. "It's about time you got here!"

"Hey, I have plenty of time," I countered, then looked at the clock and quickly poured myself a cup of coffee. Twenty minutes left to spare. Not bad. "See? I told you I'd be on time!"

"Well, the days of miracles aren't over," Rick joked, washing up the dishes. "It's good to see that some things have changed for the better!"

I thought back through many times over the years when I arrived just in time to save the day. "I've reformed."

"Hah!" Rick laughed. "Yeah, right!"

Placing the cup gingerly on the counter, I turned for the stairs. "I'm going to get ready. Are you going like that?"

Rick looked dashing in a black button-up shirt, blue jeans, and black boots, his bronze curls neatly coiffed. "What? Do you want me to wear a suit?"

"No, you look dashing! Don't change a thing!" I said, smiling.

"Yeah, you say that to all the guys."

"No, only to my father." I laughed, heading up the stairs, as Rick's laughter followed.

I carefully shut the door to my suite, and quickly jumped into the shower. It had a wide shower nozzle, allowing pulsing water to caress my entire body. A moment later, I dried off, wrapping the towel around me, then headed back into the bedroom and pulled open the duffle bag filled with my clothes. In it were a few pairs of jeans: one black, two regular pairs of blue jeans; a few shirts; and a dress. A dress? What was Rick thinking? And where was my leather? Then, I found what I was looking for: a cute, short plaid uniform skirt in variations of blue and an Armani white button-up shirt. I slipped into it, leaving the shirt untucked. I donned a pair of low strappy heels, then added a thin navy lady's tie, leaving it loose around my neck under my collar. I looked in the mirror and approved. I looked just like any other high school student. I quickly ran a brush through my long brown waves, threw my wallet into my backpack and slung it over my shoulder, then ran with vamp speed down the stairs. Rick was already waiting with the keys in his hand.

"Tonight, I'm going shopping," I announced. Let's see ... I'll need clothes, a decent but not over-the-top car, and a decent cell. I'll have to ditch mine soon. In my business, it's good to change cell phones periodically so it isn't hacked.

Rick shook his head. "We're not here for a fashion show," he said, opening the door.

"I can't very well bring my Mercedes SLS AMG now, can I?" I replied, walking out. "I need a car, too, Rick," I interjected. "I can't very well run everywhere or depend on you to take me."

"Why not? That's what fathers are for!" Rick teased, opening the passenger door for me.

"Go away," I said, getting in. "You're going to run the dad thing into the ground, aren't you?"

Rick moved with vamp speed to the driver's side and was in the car the next second. "Pretty much, yeah."

I punched him in the arm again.

"Stop that!" Rick bellowed then started the car, and soon we were on our way to Cooperstown Central High School.

"No," I replied, rolling down my window a crack. "It's too much fun."

Rick pretended to flex his muscle from pain. I knew better. He was as tough as they come. "Just don't have too much fun."

I laughed. "Hey, I have to make up for lost time. Haven't seen you in a while."

"Yeah, we'll talk about it later," Rick replied as we pulled into the parking lot. "First, we have to register you for school."

"Yeah, don't remind me."

"Hey," Rick said, gently grabbing my arm, a move that could have gotten anyone else killed. "Here's your alias, by the way. I took the liberty of making one up for you since there wasn't much time. This has your fake ID, social security card, birth certificate, and passport just in case you need it."

"Thanks," I said, slipping the driver's license and social security card into my backpack. I had a hundred aliases at home. We both did, but a new one never hurt.

And a moment later, we were strolling into the front office of the school. I took a seat in the waiting room while Rick told a nice plump woman with white hair that I was Lisa Miller, and that he had already mailed in the paperwork. He also told her that I was a senior and we had relocated because of a family emergency. He just didn't say whose family.

"You're still missing a few items, like transcripts," the nice lady said, smiling sweetly.

Rick smiled, too, and looked the white haired woman in the eye. Although I couldn't see his eyes from my direction, I knew his eyes would be glowing faintly. He was using his mind control on her. Then he said in a low voice, "The missing paperwork is coming, but won't be here for a few weeks. I'm sure that will be okay, will it not? By the way, she's a gifted student. Please place her in all honors classes."

After Rick released her from his gaze, she blinked a few times, then replied, "That's right, over the phone you said that her old school from Florida was sending the rest of her transcripts. Not a problem, Mr. Miller. And I understand Lisa is a gifted student! How exciting! I'll get Lisa enrolled right away. And my name is Ms. Sutherland if you need anything." She indicated for Rick to have a seat. She would have no recollection of him speaking to her or controlling her mind.

Of course, my mind control was good, too, but Rick's was better since he was feeding on human blood. And for him to be feeding on human blood meant that he felt he really needed the strength for what was coming. What was coming? I knew it was The Others, but who was egging them on? The Others are vampires who feed on humans whenever they feel the urge, without regard for human life. They are truly monsters in every sense of the word. Somehow within the transition, they lost all sense of compassion and human morality. Killing, to them, is a way of life. They only keep a low profile in fear of the humans finding out. Of course, they aren't afraid of humans per se, but are afraid of the other vamps that would quite literally crucify any vamp that came out of the closet, sort of speak. Usually, The Others were the derelicts of society, criminals, convicted felons with no sense of morality before they were turned. They have weak minds and are easily controlled. Another thing about The Others is that they tend to gravitate toward each other, grouping together. This is much better for the one controlling them, but who could be doing it? That was what I wanted to find out.

We weren't waiting long when the principal come out of his office and shook our hands, welcoming me to the school, then handed me a class schedule. Of course, the honors classes wouldn't be a problem. I could take any college course, earn any degree, and repeat every line from every textbook that I read verbatim. So, high school honors classes would hardly be a challenge, but we knew that Zachary was in all honors classes. My having an honors schedule increased the chances of our having the same classes. "Welcome to our school, Lisa," Mr. Hartrell, the principal, said with a smile plastered across his face. "I hope you feel comfortable here, Lisa, and come to think of us as a family, as well." "Why thank you, Mr. Hartrell," I answered sweetly. "I'm sure I'll find the accommodations here delightful." Rick gave me a dirty look as if to say, Smart Ass. Sorry, I just couldn't resist, I replied to Rick in my mind, then I looked at him and shrugged. He rolled his eyes, without Mr.

"Sorry I'm late, Ms. Parks," Zachary said in a low voice. "I was cut off by some idiot out there and couldn't find a parking space."Ms. Parks smiled sweetly. "Not a problem, Mr. Davis. This time." The later was a warning. "Now," the sweet demeanor returned, "go take a seat." He nodded, then hurried to the vacant seat next to mine. This just kept getting better. I said nothing, but watched inconspicuously. I was 5'4", but he was much taller, 6'2" to be exact. My sense of measurement was perfect, having experience over the years. He had broad shoulders that fell to a narrow waist and hips. I could tell he had nice legs under his trousers and arms that bulged from over training and years of playing sports. His sun-streaked hair was cropped short on the sides and the back like in his picture, was parted inconspicuously toward the side and fell lazily over one eye. He wore tan khakis and a nice white dress shirt. A bit dressy for a student, but on him, the look was very becoming. And I

"Zac, what do your parents do?" I asked, casually making conversation as we walked to class. Secretly, I really needed to know what he knew about his father. "Well, my mother is an interior designer here in town, and my father is an architect in Washington D.C.," Zac said, the faraway look returning. So, he knew nothing. Dr. Abbott probably wanted to keep his son in the dark as much as possible. I guess Abbott thought that what his son didn't know wouldn't hurt him. Fat chance. We talked animatedly as we walked to class. Zac was very easy to talk to. Then, my thoughts traveled to what he said when he came late to class. I forced myself from his mesmerizing eyes to focus on my mission. "What did you say when you came into class late this morning?" I asked Zac innocently as we walked. "About some guy cutting you off in the parking lot?" It bothered me ever since he said it. I wondered if there was more to it than that. "Yeah," Zac said, anger returning to his eyes. "The guy just came

I really should watch pushing the minds of the elderly. I'm sure the effect would wear off, but, then again, he might spend the rest of his life happy as a lark. Well, at least the Mrs. will be happy. Alone, my body quivered, changing as my features distorted, then morphed until I was an exact replica of Mr. Hartrell. I should probably not be a student walking the halls between bells. They would think I was skipping class. I picked up my stashed backpack, walked into the school, and threw it in a vacant nearby locker. I'd go back for it later. That is, if it was still there. If not, I could track it down easily. I walked down the hallway looking into classrooms as I passed, looking for the moron with the car. I smiled as a petite, heavy-set teacher about four feet tall passed, her heels echoing loudly down the now vacant hall. Thinking I was Mr. Hartrell, she smiled nervously, then hurried on. So, the animosity wasn't only reserved for the students. I knew I had to find the moron wit

As much as I was enjoying this, I had to end it soon, as the bell was about to ring. "Who sent you?" I repeated, screaming into his face in a guttural, demonic voice. "Uh ... uh ..." moron stammered, his voice a few pitches higher. "I don't know who the guy is, but he said to find the boy and bring him to him.""Where?" I demanded, tightening my grip on his manhood. "New York," he pleaded, his voice an octave higher, almost crying now. "I know New York, you moron! The city?"He hesitated and I tightened my grip again. Let's just say he'd be singing soprano for a while. If he lived long enough. "Okay, okay," his voice was two octaves higher, "he said to bring him to the club.""New York is filled with clubs," I said, tightening even more. I didn't know how much more he could take. "Which one?""The Mirage, on Broadway!" He was almost crying, as beads of sweat and tears ran down his cheeks. "Why there?" I demanded, never releasing my grip. "I don't know, I don't know!" He

Annie quickly moved her things to the desk next to mine, then winked at me, smiling devilishly, reminding me of the old days. I couldn't help but smile back. I always liked Annie. She had an infectious smile and a fabulous personality, but she was always a bit of a wild child, even before becoming a vamp. And she was my best friend, before I turned her.***After Fredrick turned me, we became militia and fought with the regulars against the Red Coats. Fredrick and I became assets to the cause, as we could move in stealth without being detected, moving quickly, leaving the havoc we'd created behind. The Red Coats would only catch a glimpse of us and wondered if we were real. So they called us The Ghost. Rumors spread that it was only one man, but in reality, there were many of us that comprised The Ghost. Some brave human soldiers banned together with us, and together we helped turn the course of the war. Many men bravely fought and died by our sides, but this was before modern medi

Suddenly, a burst of gunfire erupted, sending loud shots piercing the still night air. Even though it was pitch black outside the edges of the firelight, I could see many Red Coats moving in, hiding around us in the forest. Acantha dropped the plate she was holding. "Acantha, run!" I shouted, pushing her toward safety. Then, everything seemed to happen in slow motion as she reached for her gun, already loaded and ready. She looked up at me with surprise in her eyes, when a bullet pierced her in the back and she fell into my arms. I held her limp, lifeless body within my arms, then laid her carefully on the soft grass and whispered into her ear, "Acantha, hang on!" She was still breathing. I quite literally saw red and I didn't care who was watching as rage filled my chest. I ripped out the hearts of twenty men within an instant as Rick yelled, "No! Abigail, no!" Then, he looked toward the fire and saw Acantha lying helplessly by the fire. Together, Rick and I along with the other m

In the classroom, I watched Annie, knowing our friendship had come full circle. In her eyes, I could still see my good friend Acantha from long ago. Annie's eyebrows drew together in concern. "What's wrong?" she asked in a low voice so as not to attract attention, but we could still hear the teacher if needed. Vamps could pay attention to many things at once. And as I looked in her eyes, I knew our friendship was still intact. "Nothing," I replied with a half smile. "Just thinking of the old days." Annie reached across the table and gently squeezed my hand. "Don't think about it." Then, she smiled her wickedly devilish smile I remembered. "But we had us some good times, now, didn't we?" She returned my answering smile. Suddenly, Mr. Harwood stopped his lecture and cleared his throat, "Ms. Miller ..." He came to stand in front of my desk, glaring at me. Bad mistake. Annie suppressed a smile as I turned to Mr. Harwood, giving him my sweetest smile. "Yes, Mr. Harwood?" I asked i

When I finally opened my eyes, the sun was shining brightly through the windows, glistening off the contours of Zac's smooth, beautiful skin. I turned over, draping my arm over him and smiled, closing my eyes. "Good morning, sleepyhead," Zac said with a smile, and then kissed me gently on the cheek. I yawned, stretching before sitting up. It really felt good to relax and rejuvenate my body, especially since Zac was safe and our case was over. "Did you sleep?" I asked, not wanting the moment to end. "No," Zac replied, trailing a finger along my cheek, "but I enjoyed watching you sleep." I rolled my eyes and turned over."Here," Zac said, pulling me to a sitting position. "Time to get up, sleepyhead." "Why?" I asked in protest, then turned over with a smile and curled up on the pillow, shoving it under my head. She nodded, looking at the table, listening. "Mom, do you understand why I can't live here with you?" Zac asked, worried. "Yes, I understand," Jennifer responded, putting on a brave face. Then, she looked her son directly in the eye. "Son, I know you won't hurt me." "I won't, Mom. You know that," Zac answered, then continued. "But I don't know that. I need a bit of time. I'm new, brand new, so I have a few things to learn first." Zac's mother nodded, as Abbott took her other hand. "Where will you stay, Zac? Where will you live?" A moment later, Zac and I pulled out of the narrow driveway and made a left, heading toward town and Annie's house. We said nothing as I pulled in front of the house, hoping no one would notice the bullet holes decorating the side of the car. Regardless, we had tonight and I didn't want anything to spoil it. The house was dark when we pulled up. At vamp speed, Zac came around the car and opened my car door, then scooped me with ease into his arms. His super-human strength was going to come in handy. I wrapped my arms around his neck, letting him carry me to the door. "What's this all about?" I asked as a corner of my lips lifted into a mischievous grin. "What does it look like?" he answered, returning my smile. "I'm practicing carrying you over the threshold." "Practicing, huh?" I asked with a smile. "You still want to marry me after all this?""Marry you? Nah ..." Zac said, smiling, as my face fell slightly. Then, he placed a gentle finger under my chin to lift my eyes to his.

Then, I thought for a moment and added, "The cell phones are in the glove box. We'll have to ditch them soon, but go ahead and call them. I'm sure they'll answer." "But what about other shape shifters?" Zac asked, looking at the black cell phone he'd just pulled from the glove box. "Zac, Drake's dead," I replied, then smiled. "We're the only ones left. Just you and I." Zac nodded, and then looked at the cell one more time. "No, I'll call them tomorrow." Then, a thought appeared within his mind. "Do you think it's safe to go back to Cooperstown now?" "Well, Drake's dead and I'm sure word will get around that who was going to pay is de

Slamming the car door, I expertly wheeled the Challenger around, running over another rogue vamp in the process. I stopped the car on the corner where Rick, Annie, and John were waiting, taking down rogue vamps as shots of gunfire resonated throughout the neighborhood. It wouldn't be long, and the humans would respond. The men in blue would be crawling all over us in the matter of minutes. Quickly, I slung open the trunk and Rick and Annie were beside me in an instant, ripping open the cases. "Yes! A Gatlin gun!" Rick yelled, taking it from the case. "Good girl!" he yelled as he quickly loaded the bullet belt into it, then pulled it into his arms with ease, slinging the bullet belt over his shoulder. Annie, Zac, and John pulled weapons from the black leather cases, loading up, then quickly turned to stave off the rogue vamps coming toward us. Quickly, I flung open a case, finding what I was looking for, a grenade launcher. Pulling it from the case, I quickly loaded it with a case o

"Well, aren't you worried about me at all?" another voice came from the landing; a voice I would always know, pulling my attention momentarily away from Zac. "Rick! You're alive!" I exclaimed, turning to face him. And John was on his heels, smiling. "Of course! What did you think? That I was going to die and let you have all the fun?" Rick asked, sitting on the ground beside me. "John came back for us. Once we dug out the bullets, Verus and I healed pretty quickly." Then, he ripped open his shirt. "You wanna see?""Please, Rick!" "After all, he's filled with your blood." "Get it over with, Drake," I taunted, my eyes flaring. "Go ahead and kill me. You always were a coward." Drake's eyes narrowed. "Coward? I am no coward!" So, I'd struck a nerve. "Years ago, my father invited you into our house to talk rationally, but you were too much of a coward to comply. I looked at Zac, and then at Annie. "Let's do it," I replied. Together, we fired our Uzis at every vampire in the room. "I want Star and the boy alive! Kill the blonde!" Drake yelled over the gunfire suddenly exploding within the room. Within a second, the vamps rushed us, and we took them all down. Zac ripped the heads off some, then shot another, placing the pistol right between the guy's eyes. Annie's karate and jujitsu moves were unsurpassed as she moved with lightning speed, ripping apart the vamps in her wake. As for me, I ripped apart every vamp in my way, blowing the heads off any who got in my way as I made my way purposefully across the room, my eyes never leaving Drake.
