Chapter 67

Author: Rosie Steppe
"Ms. Kay," Hayden's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

I turned around quickly, realizing he was standing there with Demi and the electrician.

'Is it just me, or does Hayden look kinda cold?' I couldn't help but wonder if something had gone wrong. "Did you find any problems?" I asked.

"The electrician is already fixing them," he replied, his tone icy.

"Oh," I said, feeling a bit lost.

Before I could ask what was next, he added, "We're not adjusting the lights today."

"Huh?" I was caught off guard.

The electrician chimed in, "There's a voltage issue in the wiring that needs to be fixed."

I frowned. "How long will that take?"

"We should be done today."

I sighed in relief, worried it might drag on for days.

"Do you need anything else from me?" I asked Hayden.

"No."

I frowned slightly, but Demi spoke up before I could. "So, we don't need to stick around? We can finish early?"

"Yeah, you guys can go take care of other stuff. If anything comes up, we'll let you know," Hayden

Hayden walked up, looking cool and collected. "Let's go."'Huh? Is he not going to explain why he wanted to stay so close to us?' I wondered but felt too awkward to ask."Mr. Hart, why do you want to stay so close to us?" Demi, always quick to speak, asked for me.Hayden pressed the elevator button. I caught a glimpse of his room key card: 308, right next to mine."For convenience," he said, just two words.'Convenience for what?' I thought, my mind racing with possibilities.Demi looked just as confused. She turned to Hayden. "What do you mean by convenience?"I wanted to shake some sense into her. 'Is she really that curious? Does she have to dig into everything?'The elevator walls were polished, reflecting our images. I watched Hayden in the mirror, and he looked up, meeting my gaze. Our eyes locked for a moment before he quickly looked away and answered Demi, "Convenience for everything."Both Demi and I were at a loss for words. Finally, Demi stopped talking and just t

"Mmm."With that, he hung up the phone.Since he was the expert in lighting adjustments, someone who could affect the amusement park project, I couldn't afford to offend him.I quickly wrapped a jacket over my pajamas and went to knock on his door. Hayden opened it, his gaze falling on my still-wet hair, and his Adam's apple bobbed slightly."Does it still hurt?" he asked.I was momentarily confused. "Huh?"His eyes shifted down to my waist, and I understood. For some reason, my heart skipped a beat. "Oh, it's fine.""Wait a sec," he said before turning away, leaving me standing at the door.Looking into his room, I noticed his laptop on the table. It seemed he'd jumped straight into work after getting back while I was in the shower.'Not bad. His dedication is impressive.'Hayden came back, his tall frame filling the doorway. I glanced at him. He was still in the same clothes, but now his T-shirt was tucked into his pants, making his legs look even longer. He looked like h

There was no surprise in Hayden adding me on social media.Given our collaboration, we'd need to communicate a lot, and adding each other would make things easier. But I didn't accept his friend request right away. Instead, I replied to Lena's message, but she didn't respond—probably busy again.Next, I opened Wayne's message, thought for a moment, and replied: [I've been busy with the amusement park project. I'll show you around once I'm free.]I added another word: [Sorry.]Wayne responded quickly: [No worries. Just make sure to take care of yourself.]I was about to reply with a simple 'okay' when another message from Wayne came through: [I'll wait for you.]Those four words made my drafted 'okay' hard to send, so instead, I replied: [Are you staying here for a while?]Wayne: [Yes, I'm not leaving anytime soon.]That line was unexpected. After a few seconds, I replied: [Your parents must be happy.]Wayne's status showed he was typing, but no new message came through.I d

'But why would he ask that?' I wondered.I couldn't figure it out, so I just replied with a quick [? ].Hayden didn't respond. By the time I got to the restaurant, he'd already had breakfast and headed out to the amusement park.Overnight, they'd fixed up the park's electrical circuits, and Hayden had jumped right into testing the lights. I was pretty much his QC, checking the lights as he adjusted them. If something wasn't right, he'd tweak it until it was.It hit me that he was dead serious about not letting my health get in the way of work. He was like a machine, barely taking a break, which meant I had to keep up with him like I was on some crazy hamster wheel.I could barely get a few sips of water in, and I was scared to drink too much since that meant bathroom trips. If I took too long, he might finish adjusting a set of lights. Every time I missed an inspection, he'd have to wait, dragging out the process even more. After three days of this grind, I had ulcers in my mouth

I spun around, and sure enough, there was Jace. He shot a glance my way but aimed his question at Demi. "Where are you headed?""Keira's got ulcers. I'm grabbing her some spray and meds," Demi replied, not missing a beat. The moment she finished, Jace made a beeline for me."Have you not been drinking enough water?" he asked. He knew me too well. My body had a thing for overheating if I didn't stay hydrated, which meant plenty of water and porridge-like meals. Skip either of those, and I'd be dealing with nosebleeds or mouth ulcers. After ten years together, Jace had all my quirks down pat.But hearing him bring it up now felt like some twisted reminder of what he'd told Steve—that we "just know each other too well"."To well" that I no longer intrigued him. Not like that Tanya did."Mr. Johnston, is there something you need?" I shot back, my voice icy and formal, ignoring his question altogether.Jace's face darkened. He opened his mouth to say something, but then he caught s

It was time to let Jace know exactly where I stood."Jace, what you're calling a 'small mistake' is something I just can't brush off. You know me well enough to understand that I don't tolerate any kind of betrayal," I said, stepping back to put some distance between us."My love doesn't need to be a whole soap opera, but my guy can't be out here sending mixed signals to another girl—not even a little. If I'm in, I'm all in," I added, glancing sideways to see how Jace was reacting. As I did, I caught Hayden's gaze a few steps away. It seemed like he'd overheard at least part of our conversation. Our eyes locked for a second before I refocused on Jace.Jace's expression was a mix of impatience and annoyance, like he thought I was being totally unreasonable. "You should know by now that in today's world, no one stays faithful forever. You need to stop living in a fantasy."He wasn't wrong—temptation was everywhere, and the days of slow, deliberate love, where you only had eyes for

Medicine really is a lifesaver. After using the spray, the burning in my mouth finally eased up. By lunchtime, even drinking water wasn't torture anymore. But still, I wasn't about to risk eating anything solid. Salt and spices? Yeah, no way."Keira, how about we stick to porridge, maybe some eggs or a salad on the side?" Demi suggested, trying to keep things simple for me.I knew how much she loved her meat. "I'll just have porridge. You can get whatever sides you want."Demi was about to respond when Hayden strolled over. "Mind if I join you for lunch?" he asked.Hearing a guy like him ask to "join" us for lunch felt so weird.I was on the verge of turning him down—I was still feeling a little awkward after he helped me with the spray earlier. He didn't seem fazed, but I sure was. Before I could say anything, though, Demi—ever the fangirl—nodded eagerly. "Of course, Mr. Hart. What would you like to eat?""I'll..." Hayden glanced at me and continued, "have what Ms. Kay is havi

I decided to shut down Demi's persistent matchmaking with a blunt statement. "I'm all about the money. If he doesn't have it, even if he's drop-dead gorgeous, it's pointless."As soon as the words left my mouth, I caught Hayden glancing over.Perfect. He heard me.I didn't dodge his gaze. There was zero chance between us anyway, so it was better if he got the message loud and clear.I wasn't clueless. His casual touches, and even spraying the ulcer relief spray on me today—those small gestures made it obvious he had feelings for me."Keira, you're so shallow. Too shallow," Demi huffed, clearly annoyed.I didn't bother responding or looking at Hayden.Demi's phone rang, and after a quick glance at the screen, she said, "It's Mr. Lawson."Gavin?!"Yes... I'm in the family area of Section A at the amusement park. Do you need something? Okay, see you soon," Demi finished the call and shot me a look. "Mr. Lawson says he's coming to see you."Gavin's looking for me? I wondered what

"Got it!" Lena responded cheerfully. She washed her hands before sitting back down, picking up the utensils Aaron had prepared for her, and diving into her dumpling-and-dipping-sauce breakfast combo. "Uncle, why aren’t you eating?" She had already eaten two dumplings before realizing he hadn’t touched any. "I’m not hungry." Three words. Which meant he hadn’t eaten yet. "There’s too much food. I can’t finish it all by myself. Eat some too," Lena said casually as she picked up a dumpling with her chopsticks and held it up to his mouth. She did it so naturally—until she realized what she had just done. Aaron froze for a second, surprised by her gesture. The moment of hesitation made her realize too—wasn’t this kind of inappropriate? She was just about to pull her hand back when— He leaned in and took the dumpling straight into his mouth. Lena’s face flushed red in an instant. She hurriedly withdrew her hand, lowered her head, and focused on eating. Meanwhile, Aar

She was shocked to see him here so early. Especially today—a day when everyone was celebrating the new year, spending time with their loved ones—and yet, he was here. With her. Lena wasn’t made of stone. She felt it. A warmth, an unspoken emotion that settled deep in her chest. "Uncle, why are you here so early?" She walked over, hands casually tucked into her coat pockets. "I didn’t want you to go hungry," Aaron replied simply, lifting the bag of food in his hand. He glanced at her break room. "Open the door." She unlocked the door and stepped inside, with him following close behind. Her break room was small—a single desk and chair, a narrow bed, and a tiny wardrobe. Nothing extra, nothing unnecessary. "Sit down, Uncle," she said naturally, settling onto the bed while motioning for him to take the chair. Aaron placed the food down and asked, "Did you sleep at all?" "I did," Lena replied. But as soon as the words left her mouth, she thought of that dream—and let o

"If it weren’t for my goddaughter, I wouldn’t even bother with you," Lena said, gently rocking the baby in her arms. "Right, little Aurora? Your godmother just adores you." "Come on, Aurora, it’s time to eat," Lena said as she carefully placed the baby in Keira's arms. Although it was her first time, Keira wasn’t embarrassed. She followed Lena’s instructions, trying to breastfeed for the first time. But the process was… painful. And since her posture was incorrect, neither of them got it right—Keira ended up covered in sweat from struggling, and her baby still hadn’t eaten properly. Panic set in. Anxiety crept up her spine. "What do I do?" Keira asked, her voice tight with unease. "It’s okay. This happens at first. Let’s transition with formula for now," Lena reassured Keira before glancing at Hayden, who had been standing there the whole time, watching anxiously—and sweating just as much as Keira was. "Go make your daughter a bottle," she told him. Hayden, the man wh

That conversation… Lena shuddered. Yeah, she had definitely come back too early. It was best to leave now before she ruined the mood for those two inside. Not wanting to hear any more, she quickly turned to leave—only to smack her leg against a nearby chair. The pain was real, but worse was the noise it made, drawing attention to her presence. Inside the room, Hayden—already feeling awkward from Keira's teasing—froze. The sound from outside made him even more uncomfortable. Keira couldn’t hold back her laughter. The moment Keira burst out laughing, however, pain shot through her lower abdomen. "Ah—ow!" Keira gasped. Hayden immediately panicked. "What’s wrong? Where does it hurt?" Hearing her cry, Lena rushed in as well. "What happened?" "I laughed too hard and pulled my stitches," Keira explained, gripping Hayden’s hand tightly. Lena glared at Keira. "You’re a mother now, and yet you’re still acting like a child. Do you have any idea what condition you’re in?"

"It’s fine. I can do it," Hayden said naturally as he picked up the basin and went to fetch warm water. The moment he stepped out, Lena turned to scold Keira. "You went through so much pain to give birth to his child. Why would you feel bad about letting him do something for you?" "It’s not that I feel bad—I just feel embarrassed," Keira whispered in defense. Lena rolled her eyes. "So dramatic." Keira shot her a glare in return. "Just wait until it’s your turn. When your husband has to handle your private matters, you’ll understand how awkward it is." The moment the words left Keira's mouth, she saw Lena’s face turn red. Lena quickly hugged the baby and turned away. But Keira caught it. Something was off. "Wait… why are you blushing?" Keira asked suspiciously. "I am not blushing," she denied immediately. What Keira didn’t know was that her words had triggered the memory of Lena's ridiculous dream—where she had been lying on the delivery bed, cursing Aaron while gi

The moment she finished cursing, Lena jolted awake. She sat there, dazed. What kind of ridiculous dream was that? She had assisted in delivering countless babies before, but this was the first time she had ever dreamed of giving birth herself. And not only that—she had dreamed of giving birth to Aaron’s child? That was beyond outrageous. Absolutely absurd! What a way to start the new year. That dream was anything but beautiful. Lena ran a hand down her face, shaking off the lingering unease. She quickly got up, poured herself a glass of water to calm down, and then left the break room. Back in the hospital room, Hayden was feeding Keira. Keira was perfectly capable of eating on her own, but he insisted on feeding her, saying that she was in a special period and should be treated like a queen. That this was the time to learn how to be spoiled properly. Fine. If this was how he wanted to make up for the suffering she endured giving birth to their daughter, she’d give

Keira looked at Lena and smiled as she followed up on Hayden’s words. "You’re family. It’s different." Lena shot her a subtle glare before stuffing the red envelope into her pocket and saying, "Give me the rest. I’ll hand them out for you later." Hayden passed her the prepared stack of red envelopes, and as she took them, she asked, "What about the other departments?" Hayden and Aaron exchanged a glance and chuckled. "Of course. Every medical staff member in this hospital gets one." "President Hart, you’re too generous," Lena said, giving him a thumbs-up. With that, she took the envelopes and left. Aaron glanced at the time. "If there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading back now." "Mm. Happy New Year!" Hayden said, offering his holiday wishes. "Happy New Year to your whole family," Aaron replied, adding a few extra words that made both Hayden and me instinctively turn toward the baby in the bassinet. From today onward, we were officially a family of three. Outside the h

When Keira returned to the hospital room, she was greeted by a sight that made her pause. The room was decorated with fresh flowers and balloons, and beside her bed, there was a small cart filled with various gift boxes. The atmosphere was so festive that if someone walked in, they might have thought it was a birthday party rather than a postpartum recovery room. "What’s all this?" Lena asked on Keira's behalf. "A reward for my wife," Hayden answered, his hand still holding Keira's as he gazed at her with deep affection. "She went through so much. This is my way of thanking her." Keira smiled faintly. "I don’t need any of this." "Whether you need it or not is one thing. Giving it to you is my choice," Hayden said, pressing a kiss onto Keira's fingertips. "Even if everything I have already belongs to you, I still want to give you more." "Such a loving husband—honestly, what more could a woman ask for?" Lena teased before patting Keira's hospital bed. "But if President Hart r

Elder Mitchell wasn’t buying it. "That just means you guys didn’t really want to give anything. If you truly wanted to, there’s no such thing as a gift that can’t be delivered." The two old men started bickering again, but Hayden ignored them. Instead, he kept his eyes on the infant bathing room. Before long, the nurse finished bathing the baby and carried her out. Hayden reached out to take her, but the two elders immediately moved to get closer. He blocked them without hesitation. "Don’t you know old people’s eyes are toxic? You shouldn’t be staring at her for too long." Elder Hart: "…" Elder Mitchell: "…" With that, Hayden carried the baby and walked away. The two old men trailed after him, hoping to catch another glimpse, but Hayden wasn’t about to give them the chance. "Congratulations," Aaron, who had been standing nearby, offered his well wishes. "It’s a daughter. Take a look," Hayden said, his pride practically radiating off him. Aaron lowered his gaze to the
