Chapter 594

Author: Rosie Steppe
I screamed without thinking, and then Yara's voice rang out, "Stop!"

Next thing I knew, she was charging forward, taking on both guys like she was in some action movie.

For the first time, it hit me—Yara knew how to fight. Every move was so smooth, like she'd done this a million times. The two guys holding me let go and turned to face her.

I stood there for a second, totally stunned. Forget being scared, I was just watching her totally kick butt.

But it didn't take long for me to snap out of it. I ran back inside, not to hide, but to grab a baseball bat.

I wasn't a fighter like Yara, but I sure wasn't weak. No way I was letting her do all the heavy lifting.

Fueled by anger, I swung the bat hard, knocking one guy back and getting their attention. They tried to grab it from me, but every time they got close, Yara kicked them back like it was nothing. It was like a tag-team match—I didn't have the skills, but together, we made them back off.

We kept going, not sure how long it last

I glanced at the two guys on the floor. "Is it safer here?"Yara paused, then nodded. "I guess so. But let's wait for Hayden to make the call. Not my decision."I wanted to ask, 'Aren't you his fiancée?' but kept it to myself. No need to sound petty."Let's head inside. Standing out here is exhausting," Yara suggested, looking totally chill.I shot another look at the guys, but Yara shrugged. "They're not going anywhere."She was the one who caught and tied them up, so I figured I could trust her confidence. We walked into the villa, Yara scanning the place with a lazy smile. "Nice place. Definitely has a feminine touch."I'd noticed that too."I'm not sure," I said, trying to sound casual.I'd seen Wayne's place earlier—there was no sign of a woman. The only room that screamed "female" was the art studio. And yeah, the woman in those paintings? Me.Yara flopped onto the couch like she owned the place. I sat down next to her. "Those guys outside were probably sent by Bruno,"

Yara really had some nerve.Seeing that smug grin, I matched her smile. "I'm not sold on the idea.""Not into Cole?" she asked, bold as ever.I shot back just as bluntly. "Not really. Besides..." I laughed lightly. "If I married Cole, I'd have to start calling you and Hayden 'Aunt Yara' and 'Uncle Hayden.' Kinda a downgrade for me, don't you think?"Yara burst out laughing. "Fair point!""If I had to marry someone from your family, I'd pick your brother," I joked. "Sure, Thorsten's a bit older, but he's loaded. And he probably won't outlive me. Once he's gone, I'd inherit all his cash—and you and Hayden would have to see me as 'the elder.'"She chuckled. "I like your style, but you'd have to get rid of my sister-in-law first, and deal with Sasha."Yara knew all about Thorsten's drama-filled relationships, down to the dirty details.I was done with the banter, though, so I got straight to the point. "Miss Drago, I get what you're trying to do, but I don't need anyone playing mat

I flipped through the journal, curiosity growing with each page, determined not to miss anything. One of the entries was from before Wayne had returned to the country. It read: [Over fourteen hundred days... it's time to go back.]Fourteen hundred days—exactly four years.I kept flipping, then suddenly stopped when my eyes landed on a page that made my heart race. [She's finally not his anymore.]The date? The day Jace and I were supposed to get our marriage license. That was the day I found Tanya in the penthouse Jace and I were meant to move into after our wedding. The day I walked away from Jace for good.My hands shook as I stared at the words. Just as I took a deep breath to steady myself and keep reading, I heard a car engine outside.I didn't know who it was, but I couldn't focus on the journal anymore. Reluctantly, I set it back exactly where I'd found it and headed downstairs.Yara was opening the door for Hayden. He stood there, his foot pressed against one man's chin

Hayden shot Yara a look, his expression darkening.Yara raised an eyebrow, totally unbothered, like she already knew what was coming. She was way too comfortable around him. Like, seriously, where was the fear?"Just tell her already. Stop playing games," Yara said, all casual like this was no big deal.Hayden turned to me, eyes intense. "If you're leaving, then go pack your stuff..."I cut him off. "Hayden, seriously. Why can't you just answer me?"Yara sighed dramatically. "I'll leave you two alone." She gave us some space and walked off.Hayden stayed right where he was, locking eyes with me. "So, what do you think my reason is?"He actually wanted me to guess?I was so done. Yara had been vague and cryptic, and now Hayden was doing the exact same thing. He didn't want to talk. It was so obvious."Fine. If you're not gonna say it, then don't," I shot back. "Whatever your reasons are, they don't matter anymore. Even if I knew, it wouldn't change anything."Why was I still

My passport was still back at the hotel, waiting for me.Yara shot me a quick look, then flicked her gaze to Hayden before going back to scrolling on her phone.Hayden didn't even blink. He totally ignored me like I hadn't said a word.I didn't bother repeating myself—he definitely heard me.Sure enough, half an hour later, we pulled up to the hotel. Just as I was about to open the door, Hayden's voice cut through the silence. "Yara, go up with her."Guess he was still freaking out about the whole Hernan-kidnapping thing. But Yara just shrugged. "I'm hungry. I'll grab something to eat." She wasn't having it.Hayden shot her a look, but Yara didn't even flinch. She just walked off, like it was no big deal. She was fearless. I guess that's part of what made her so... irresistible to Hayden.I mean, someone once said a woman shouldn't make a guy the center of her world. Only then will he value her.Maybe there's truth in that. Looking back, I definitely gave too much weight to J

It was Bruno on the line.At the same time, the security footage showed Yara sitting there with a coffee, only to be grabbed by two guys and shoved into a car. Bruno's men were on top of it, no time for her to react."So, you really can't wait to see me?" Hayden's voice was icy, his eyes locked on the screen."I'm dying to see you," Bruno replied, each word dripping with malice.I could feel the venom in his voice. If Hayden actually went to meet him, this wasn't gonna end well."Alright, I'm coming," Hayden said."Oh, and bring Keira with you," Bruno added, sending a chill down my spine. I instinctively scanned the shop.It was nearly empty, but when I glanced out the window, I spotted a car across the street with its window down.Someone inside waved at me."There!" I pointed out the window.Hayden saw it too. He walked out of the store, stopping just at the edge of the street, with Bruno's car across the road, almost within reach.Bruno hung up, then yelled across the str

I stared at the tips of my shoes, lost in thought. "Let's go."Steve loaded my luggage into the car, opened the door for me, and closed it once I was inside. Only then did he get in and start driving."Steve, how did things get so out of hand? It was just a snooker game..." I wasn't blaming him, just lost in the mess we were in.What should've been a simple thing had blown up, dragging in Hernan, and now Bruno was involved too. It felt like danger was everywhere, and everyone was on edge.I remembered what Jace had said. "Who do you think is behind all this? Why target you specifically?""I've been wondering the same thing," Steve replied, clearly following my train of thought. "The key is figuring out their endgame."I let out a bitter laugh. "Seems like they want to catch us all in one go.""Especially every guy connected to you," Steve added, making me sit up straighter.Right... Jace, Steve, Hayden—they were all tied to me.."I'm starting to think this person has some twis

We were boxed in. Cars surrounded us, leaving no escape route. Trying to break free would be reckless—we'd never make it.Steve was right. Hayden had been pulled away, leaving me vulnerable. And without Hayden's skills, Steve was at a serious disadvantage.Bruno's real target? Me.As the men climbed out of their cars, surrounding us, I turned to Steve. "In a minute, I'll go with them. Don't do anything stupid—just call Hayden.""No way!" Steve shot back, his protective instincts kicking in."Listen," I insisted, "Jace is already in Bruno's hands, and Hayden's gone after him. If you get taken too, Bruno will have all of us, and no one to save us."He hesitated, but I gave him a calm, reassuring smile. "We talked about this earlier. If Wayne's behind this, I won't be harmed. So don't worry about me.""But what if it's not him?" Steve didn't seem convinced."If it's not him, then we're good. You can reach out to him for help."I could see the shift in his eyes."This is our chan

Aaron had a knack for handling people, never revealing all his cards at once. "I'm pursuing Lil' Lena," he said calmly. Ron's eyes widened, his breath catching in his throat. A few seconds later, he finally reacted, and everything became clear. Lena had asked him to play the role of her boyfriend. Out of respect for her privacy, he hadn’t pried into the reason. Later, he’d asked Hayden, who simply told him to go along with it and not ask too many questions. Now he understood—it was because Aaron was pursuing her. “You’re already aware of my situation with her,” Aaron continued. “This process won’t be smooth, so it’s a good idea for her to use you as a stand-in boyfriend for now.” Ron understood perfectly. His role was to act as a cover, fooling the fake mother-in-law like yesterday while giving Aaron and Lena space to start a secret relationship. This was precisely Aaron’s plan. He wanted Lena to first accept him, to spend time together, and build their connection before

This question—"Willing?"—kept echoing in Lena’s mind. It haunted her so much that she spent yet another sleepless night. Her answer was clear: she couldn’t. She knew Aaron had made his move and wouldn’t give up easily. But she simply couldn’t agree. And if she didn’t say yes, there was nothing he could do about it. Besides, she truly saw him as her younger uncle—there was no way she could see him as a boyfriend. “Dr. Lane, not sleeping well lately?” the hospital director asked as soon as he saw her. One glance, and he could tell she looked exhausted. “A bit of insomnia,” Lena admitted honestly. “Is it because you don’t have a boyfriend? Want me to introduce you to a few?” The director, ever so responsible, even took it upon himself to worry about her personal life. Lena glanced at the sparse hair on his head and chuckled. “Director, I’ll find someone myself. No need for you to concern yourself.” Aaron hadn’t gotten an answer from her, nor had he pursued her aggressively

"I've thought about it, and I have a plan. I’ll make them accept it. This is something I need to consider. You don’t have to worry," Aaron said with a tone of responsibility. Lena fell silent. A few seconds later, she replied, "Even if they accept it, I can't... Uncle, I’ve always seen you as my uncle and never felt anything else." Ron’s apartment was on the fifth floor, giving Lena a clear view of his face. His expression was slightly tense as he continued looking up at her. Though she couldn’t see his eyes, she could still feel the depth of emotion in them, and the loneliness he must have felt after being rejected. Lena lowered her gaze, unable to watch any longer. "Uncle, we have such a good relationship, don’t ruin it, please." "Do you know how many years I’ve liked you?" Aaron suddenly asked. Lena’s heart skipped a beat. How many years had he liked her? Did that mean he’d had feelings for her all along? But he had never mentioned it, and she had never sensed it. He

"Cough, cough..." Lena started coughing uncontrollably as Ron casually spoke. Even a real son-in-law wouldn’t start calling his girlfriend’s mother "Mom" right away, let alone someone pretending to be one. Lena stared at him blankly, and Ron winked at her with a gesture that seemed to say "Don’t worry." He then turned to speak to Briana on the phone. "Mom, I’ve been with Lena for a few months now. She’s been too shy to introduce me to you because she was afraid you wouldn’t approve of me... Yes, yes, we’re basically an underground couple." Lena rolled her eyes in disbelief. What kind of nonsense was this? She tried to grab his phone, not wanting to hear any more of his fabrication, but Ron dodged and continued speaking to Briana. "Mom, I’m really her boyfriend, not fake... Otherwise, why would she be here with me so late at night, right?" Ron certainly had a way with words, and Lena realized that asking him to pretend to be her boyfriend might be the best decision she’d made

Lena took a deep breath. As expected, her mother was not going to let this slide, but she still didn’t give up and continued testing her. "So why is it okay for others but not for me?" Briana scoffed. "If you’re looking for a man ten years older, are you looking for a husband or another father? And if you want someone younger, they’re not even of legal age yet—are you planning to take advantage of them? And what’s with all this talk about uncles or cousins? You want your dad and me to jump into the river?" Lena deflated. If she were to really get together with Aaron, they wouldn’t need to jump into a river—their blood pressure would probably be enough to do them in. "Lena, have you done something that goes against ethics and morals?" As sharp as ever, her mother quickly turned the tables and started questioning her. "What are you talking about? What could I have done? You tell me," Lena denied with all the confidence she could muster. Briana didn’t believe her. "Really? If yo

Ron’s apartment was a three-bedroom place, with two bedrooms and a study, all clean and neatly organized. Lena was staying in the guest room. The curtains and furnishings in the room, especially the vanity, looked as if they were specifically chosen for a girl. "Dr. Lane, don’t misunderstand. This room isn’t my ex-girlfriend’s, and you're the first woman, aside from my mom, to stay here," Ron quickly explained. He told Lena that this room was reserved for his mother. Sometimes, when she had an impulsive moment or got into a fight with his dad, she’d stay over for a while. That’s why the room was decorated in a feminine way. Lena could feel it too; the room had a distinctly maternal scent. It made her think of the times she used to sleep in her mother’s room when she was a child. Her mother had told her to sleep in her own bed, but Lena refused and would sneak back into her mother’s room in the middle of the night, a habit that continued until she was ten. One day, her mother

Keira didn’t know what it was like for other women during pregnancy, but for her, it was just swollen, aching legs. "Seems like the news is pretty well-informed. Yep, you’d better get the red envelopes ready," Hayden's tone was surprisingly similar to Lena’s. "Dr. Lane wasn’t serious with you. Don’t take it to heart," Hayden reminded him. Ron laughed. "Why can’t I take it seriously? I’m sincere with her, and she’ll definitely see it. Who knows, she might even fall in love with me, and then my fake relationship might turn real." He sounded pretty confident. "I’m serious, not joking," Hayden and Keira both assumed he was just playing around, trying to tease them. On the other end of the call, Ron fell silent. "I’m serious too. Actually, I’ve liked Dr. Lane for a long time. I feel like this is a sign from fate, that the heavens are helping me because of my sincere feelings." Keira was speechless, glancing at Hayden. He raised an eyebrow. "Are you serious, or are you just j

When Lena opened the video call, Keira saw she was in a three-bedroom apartment. Keira was surprised. She hadn’t realized Lena had already moved into Ron’s place so quickly. Curiously, she asked, “Where are you?” “At my husband’s house,” she said without any shame at all. Seeing her carefree attitude, Keira could tell she had gotten what she wanted, but was still shocked. “Ron agreed, and you’re already living with him?” “Yeah, get the red envelopes ready. Make sure you load them up with a lot of cash,” Lena said, acting as if it were all part of the plan. Keira didn’t laugh with her. “Lena, it’s easy to get on the ship, but hard to get off. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” “Don’t worry, Mr. Shane and I have a contract. It’s a clear-cut transaction,” Lena said, speaking as if she were very clever. Keira wasn’t sure what Ron was thinking or how Lena had managed to convince him, but it seemed like they were both on the same page, and the deal was done. Since it was already d

"Sure!" Ron agreed without hesitation. Lena silently gave herself a thumbs-up. She had always said Ron was a good guy, and now she could tell he was genuinely pleasant. She sent him the address of a café, which was not far from where Ron worked. Before she had even prepared what she was going to say, Ron had already arrived. He immediately apologized, "Sorry for keeping you waiting." This man's charm and good nature instantly shot up. Lena felt more and more certain that asking him to help was the right decision. Lena wasn't unfamiliar with him, but she still couldn't help but focus on Ron's face. He wore frameless glasses, a casual suit jacket, and neat trousers. He wasn't the type to blind people with his good looks, but he was still very attractive. What stood out most was that he had a warm smile that made anyone around him feel happy. They said a smiling woman was lucky, and a smiling man brought good fortune as well. "Did you ask me here just to admire a handsome ma
