A flicker of disappointment flashed in Wayne's eyes, but he nodded and raised his hand to flag down a cab for me. When it pulled up, he even opened the door.

As we drove off, I glanced back and saw Wayne's car trailing us—not too close, not too far, just keeping watch.

The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, smirking a little. "Rough patch with your boyfriend, huh? He seems like a good one. You're upset, don't want to ride with him, so he's just following quietly to make sure you're safe." The guy was a little too chatty.

I looked out the window. "He's not my boyfriend."

He blinked, surprised, and thankfully took the hint to stop talking.

I focused on the passing streetlights, letting the silence settle.

But then I caught a glimpse of another car in the rearview mirror, right behind Wayne's. My heart stuttered. It looked like Hayden's car.
