As soon as I got on the plane, I shut my eyes and zonked out. Didn't say a word to Wayne the whole flight.

He must've known I wasn't in the mood, because he didn't bother trying to talk.

When we finally landed, I turned to him. "I'm going to see Hayden. I'll grab a cab."

He hesitated for a second. "My parents are here."

I tensed up. "You told them?"

"Yeah," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "They've been freaking out about you. When you were out, they called, like, every ten minutes to check in, so--"

I cut him off. "I get it. I'll let them see I'm alive and kicking so they can chill."

We headed toward the exit together, and sure enough, I spotted Lindey and Matthew in the crowd, looking all worried.

"Rea!" Lindey waved the moment she saw me.

I waved back and hurried over with Wayne.

Lindey grabbed my hand right away, her eyes all emotional. "Oh, you silly girl... what do I even say to you?"

She looked like she wanted to call me reckless, but if I hadn't been, her p

"Yeah, Rea, Dad and Mom just wanted you two to live your lives without feeling like you were any different from everyone else," Wayne chimed in."We wanted you and Jace together because of the feelings you shared, not for any other reason," Lindey reiterated. After all the years I'd spent living with them, I knew better than anyone how they treated me. And now, with everything laid out, it made sense. If I had known about the blood type earlier, I probably would've been anxious all the time, constantly worried, and my life wouldn't have been nearly as carefree as it was.But one question still nagged at me. "Lindey, Matthew... when my parents arranged for me and Jace to be engaged all those years ago, was it because of our blood types?"Lindey glanced at Matthew, and after a few beats, he nodded. "When we found out you both had the same rare blood type—what they call golden blood—it was a shock. But it also meant that if one of you was ever in danger, the other could save them."

In the car, I dialed Hayden. This time, he picked up almost right away. "Hello?""Where are you?" I asked, not bothering with pleasantries. There was a beat of silence before he said, "You're back?"Those two words made my chest feel tight. Of course, I was back. Wasn't it him who practically dragged me back?"Yeah, I'm back. Where are you? I need to see you," I said, my voice sharp."Just go home. I'll come to you," he replied.I shut my eyes, feeling irritation bubbling up. "Hayden, are you seriously not getting this? I said—I. Want. To. See. You."He finally caved. "I'm at home. Yuna's here, too," he said, and that last part told me everything. He didn't want me showing up, especially not with Yuna there to witness any drama.Fair enough. Yuna was still recovering, and the last thing she needed was to be caught in the crossfire. And with her there, having a real conversation with Hayden would be pretty much impossible.I didn't push further. "Fine. I'll wait at home."I

Hayden's one sentence nearly made me see red.Now I was sure this whole mess between us was because of that ridiculous news report.Sure, I had some blame in this, but I was still fuming. We'd promised to trust each other, yet here he was, judging me over a single story without even asking my side.I felt the frustration rise in my chest. "If I said it's not convenient, would you just turn around and leave?""Yes." Of course, he would.I clenched my teeth. "Hayden, when it comes to being a jerk, you're really unmatched."He didn't even flinch, just kept that calm, collected look that somehow made it even harder to stay mad.Fuming, I spun around and dropped onto the couch with a huff. Hayden followed, sitting down too—but he left about a foot between us.This was the guy who used to pull me onto his lap if I so much as scooted an inch closer. Now, he was holding back. It was obvious where his mind was.My chest tightened, and I looked at him, my voice wavering. "Do you really

Hayden never held back. He always said exactly what he felt, and now his words cut deep—he honestly thought I still had feelings for Jace.Since we got together, I'd kept my distance from Jace, worried our past might mess things up with Hayden. But clearly, I’d slipped up. I'd made him feel like he didn’t have all of me.This wasn't just about me giving Jace blood. Hayden had been carrying this around for a while, something he'd been feeling long before now."All this time, you've thought I didn't love you enough?" I let out a bitter laugh. "If that's true, then maybe I don't even know how to love anymore.""If you really loved me, you wouldn't have been so quick to suggest breaking up," he said, his voice low.I shut my eyes, frustration boiling over. "I told you—that was just me talking out of anger."I gave a tired smile and added, "It was a heat-of-the-moment thing, but you jumped at the chance to agree. So, Hayden, should I start thinking you never really wanted me in the fi

Through the blur of my tears, he was just this fading outline in the distance...I'd watched him walk away so many times before, but this time? It felt different, like it finally had nothing to do with me anymore. The tears didn't last long. Sadness kind of fizzled, leaving pure, boiling anger.I was mad. Mad at Hayden for throwing us away over some dumb misunderstanding, mad because in the end, he was like everyone else—quick to bail when things got real.Fine, if Hayden was done, then so was I. No way I'd sit here waiting. After a shower, I got into bed, phone lighting up with texts from Wayne and Jace, both wanting to know how things went with Hayden. But telling them would just lead to a whole round of pity or guilt, and I wasn't in the mood to explain. So, I ignored both of them. But when Lena texted, I actually replied.Honestly, though, she's been so wrapped up with Nate that I hadn't heard a word from her in days. She didn't even know I'd almost died.[Oh, so you've fin

Would Hayden regret this?I had no idea. But the way he walked away so decisively felt like someone was squeezing my heart, tighter with every minute. The pain twisted inside me all night, leaving me wide awake, tossing and turning.I hadn’t even felt this broken when I ended things with Jace.By the time the sun finally dragged itself over the horizon, I dragged myself out of bed, got ready, and headed to the office. At least there, I'd see Hayden. If I had such a miserable night, I was dying to know how he handled it.To hide my exhaustion, I applied a layer of makeup before stepping into work.As fate would have it, I ran straight into Ron in the lobby. Spotting me, he waved with his usual over-the-top enthusiasm. "Ms. Kay! Good morning!"Ron, my ridiculously energetic superior, always greets me like we're long-lost family—just short of throwing his arms around me in a teary reunion."Good morning, Mr. Shane," I nodded politely."Where's your plus-one? Ron never called out mistakes directly. He had this way of giving low-key, feel-good reminders that made you want to do better without feeling weird about it.That's why he was our superior. He'd joke around all day, barely looking like he was working, but somehow, everyone else was always hustling to keep up.I played along, smiling. "If I slowed down, I'd feel guilty, letting you down."He chuckled. "But I never put any pressure on you. Besides, work's endless. No need to rush."Ron's the first boss I've met who doesn't want you to stress yourself out. Kinda rare.Since he was being nice, I couldn't exactly turn him down without coming off rude, so I smiled and said, "Alright, I'll keep that in mind.""You've lost a lot of weight lately. Are you sure you're okay?" He didn't even glance at the stack of documents I'd handed him, like he was more interested in a random chat.We weren't close or anything, but ever since we met, he acted like we were old pals. Still, I kept things

Hmph! He didn't want me anymore, but he was still playing these games.Clearly, he still had feelings for me. Maybe Lena was right—I needed to play my cards right."Mr. Shane, I've got plans tonight, but let's do dinner tomorrow," I offered, keeping it casual.Ron's face lit up. "Great! Sounds perfect. Hayden, you in for tomorrow?""I'm busy," Hayden replied, ice-cold, shutting it down.Ron looked like he might argue, but I jumped in. "Mr. Shane, I'm taking you somewhere tomorrow that you've never been.""Really?" Ron raised a brow. "Someplace I haven't been? Has Hayden?"He never missed a chance to rope Hayden in. I knew why—Ron was terrified of crossing him, knowing Hayden was the true heir to the Hart family empire.Just then, the elevator arrived, and Hayden strode out without a glance at Ron.Ron glanced between us, looking like he wanted to say something, but switched gears quickly. Going back to her family’s home was out of the question. Lena would rather move her luggage back to Aaron’s place and stay with him. Though Mrs. Lane could pressure her, she couldn’t do the same with Aaron. In the end, she had no choice but to relent, though her frustration was evident. Grinding her teeth, she snapped, “You’re both so stubborn!” As she left the room, Mrs. Lane gave Lena a pointed glare, clearly displeased that she hadn’t sided with her or tried to convince Aaron otherwise. “Lena,” Mrs. Lane said sternly, “from today until your little uncle fully recovers, you’re responsible for taking care of him. This includes changing his bandages, accompanying him to check-ups, and handling all of his daily needs—everything from meals to mobility.” Mrs. Lane’s commanding tone reminded Lena of why she’d often likened her mother to a tyrant. At least to her, Mrs. Lane had always been domineering and overbearing. Lena had clashed with her mother many times over the years, par

"How’s your injury? Are you alright?" Lena asked James. “I’m fine… well, nothing serious,” James said, rubbing his head. He hadn’t thought much of it initially, but now, with the bandages wrapped around his head, he suddenly felt his injury was far worse. Even his head started to feel a bit dizzy. “Make sure to rest. I’m going to see my little uncle. Which room is he in?” Lena asked. “He’s over there. I’ll take you,” James offered enthusiastically. “No need. You should rest,” Lena said, sparing him the trouble. Just then, James’s phone rang. Holding his head, he answered and walked ahead, leaving Lena to her thoughts. Watching him walk away, she felt a heavy weight in her chest. If James, sitting in the backseat, ended up like this, Aaron, who had been driving, must be in much worse shape. With a deep breath, she made her way to Aaron’s hospital room. She had just taken a few steps when the treatment room door opened behind her, and two nurses walked out chatting. “It’s s

In the hospital room, James held up his phone, snapping selfies from left and right. After examining the pictures, he muttered, “Who’s the shameless person claiming I’m seriously injured? If they have the nerve to say it, I don’t even have the face to admit it.” All he had was a slightly reddened bump on his forehead from hitting the seat—no cuts, no bruises. Yet the unscrupulous reporters painted a picture of him being half-dead, making it headline news. Just earlier, he’d received a tearful phone call from his mother, who’d cried her heart out over the exaggerated reports. “If you feel bad about letting people down, go find a rock or a concrete wall and hit your head harder. Then it’ll be believable,” Aaron quipped, earning a sharp glare from James. “You’ve got some nerve, Aaron! That car I crashed was brand new—just picked it up yesterday. You owe me!” James grumbled, clutching his chest in mock heartbreak. “My assistant will be here later. If you can still walk, go pick up

“Damn it, Aaron, you—ah, hell…” James’s head slammed into the seat, making him howl in pain. The car came to a screeching stop, smoke billowing from the hood. But the scariest part wasn’t the damage to the car—it was the sight of the driver’s side, crumpled from the impact. Aaron sat there, his face growing visibly paler. He glanced at his trapped arm, then slowly closed his eyes and said in a low voice, “Call 911. Don’t call the police.” “What do you mean, don’t call the police? Who’s going to pay for my car?” James groaned, clutching his throbbing head. “I’ll pay. I’ve been drinking,” Aaron muttered, his words earning a string of curses from James. - When Lena opened her eyes, it was 5:30 a.m. Despite having gone to bed late, she woke early, her mind unusually alert. She stared at her surroundings, familiar yet strangely distant. It took her a few seconds to remember—she had moved back home from Aaron’s place the previous night. Letting out a deep sigh, she grabbed her

Aaron’s fingers tightened slightly around the glass of milk, his dark gaze flickering faintly. Lena, sensing the tension, held her breath. She was already regretting her words, thinking of an excuse to explain further, when Aaron spoke. “Alright,” he said simply. He agreed. Lena exhaled in relief, quickly reaching out to take the milk with both hands, like a child trying to behave. “Thank you, Uncle.” She wasn’t sure if she was thanking him for letting her go so easily or for thoughtfully preparing the milk. Holding the glass, she retreated to her room as quickly as possible. Aaron stood in place, watching her until she disappeared from view, his gaze dropping only when she was out of sight. Now that he had agreed, Lena began packing her belongings. She didn’t have much—she’d always been someone with few material desires. When she first moved in, it was with the intention of staying temporarily, so her things were limited to what she had brought with her. It didn’t take l

“I don’t smell any alcohol,” Lena muttered. Aaron leaned closer, his flawless face coming within a breath’s distance of hers. Lena’s nerves tightened like a spring, her pupils dilating as she stared at his face so close to hers. Her heartbeat pounded like a drum, loud and unrelenting. “How about now? Do you smell it?” Aaron’s voice was low, smooth, and intimate. The closeness made her focus solely on his lips—perfectly shaped, not too thin nor too full. They looked soft, and the thought of kissing them briefly crossed her mind. An inappropriate and utterly ridiculous notion, yet there it was, popping into her head uninvited. Amidst her quickened breaths, she seemed to catch a faint hint of sweetness, mingled with a subtle, intoxicating aroma of alcohol. It was… oddly pleasant. Her hand gripped the edge of the counter tightly. She dared not move, let alone breathe deeply, afraid that the smallest action might bring her lips to his. If it were anyone else, she might have pu

Tonight, Lena had stayed late at the hospital for surgery. When she returned, she didn’t see Aaron’s car and assumed he wasn’t home. Without having eaten dinner, she cooked some noodles and was chatting with Keira while eating. Out of nowhere, Aaron appeared. He was dressed in loungewear, his hair slightly damp as if he’d just showered—clearly, he had been home all along. “Uncle… you, you’re home?” Lena stammered, hurriedly trying to turn off her phone. In her flustered state, she accidentally knocked over the bowl of noodles she had barely touched. She was embarrassed, frustrated, and downright annoyed. What a mess—starving to death, and now the noodles were gone too. Aaron, having clearly overheard Keira's voice message, seemed completely composed. He walked over and stopped her from grabbing at the spilled noodles. “Let me handle this. Did you burn yourself?” “No burns, just scared by you,” Lena replied as she finally managed to turn off the voice message. As Aaron clean

“Kiki, I promise to give you an opening ceremony that will surprise and delight you. Please agree, will you?” Hayden pleaded, holding Keira's hand like a spoiled child. He rarely pressed her for anything, and his insistence puzzled her. But seeing his sincerity, she could only nod. “Fine, but don’t turn my courtyard into a chaotic mess, and definitely don’t invite irrelevant people.” This small courtyard was her serene haven. She enjoyed making tea for visitors and watching the sunrise and breeze when alone—it was enough for her. “As you wish, Mrs. Hart,” he exclaimed, excitement lighting up his face before he kissed her swiftly on the cheek. However, after the kiss, he didn’t let go. Instead, he gazed at her for a few seconds before his lips landed on hers again. It had been a long time since they kissed so passionately. As his kisses deepened and his arms tightened around her, she could clearly feel the changes in his body. Keira was already past her third month of pregna

“What did Sasha come to talk to you about?” That evening, as Hayden dried Keira's hair, he asked her softly. He rarely pried, but he must have noticed her low spirits ever since Sasha left and figured something was on her mind. “Do you think the Drago family’s influence has been completely eradicated?” Keira asked, her question making Hayden pause mid-motion. “On the surface, it seems so,” he replied, turning off the hairdryer. “But Thorsten had loyal confidants over the years. It’s possible there are still remnants left unchecked. Did Sasha notice something?” Keira shook her head slightly. “She told me she opened a private bank account, one that no one knows about. She said if anything happens to her—if she’s gone suddenly or meets with some accident—I should ensure the money is kept for Nina.” Hayden frowned, his gaze turning serious. “For her to bring this up out of nowhere, something must be wrong. Do you think she’s worried the Drago family's remnants might target her?
