Chapter 314

Author: Rosie Steppe
Hayden's eyes narrowed, and I instinctively gripped him tighter. "Is it true?"

"Why would you think that?" he countered.

I was about to mention Lindey when, out of nowhere, Yuna's voice called from a distance, "Keira, your phone's been ringing nonstop!"

She was hurrying over, despite her heart condition. She wasn't supposed to be running.

"Okay, I got it!" I quickly jumped off Hayden's lap and rushed over to her.

It was Lindey calling—multiple times. Something had to be up.

"Lindey?" I answered immediately.

"Rea, why haven't you been picking up? I thought something happened!" Her voice was laced with panic.

"No, I just didn't have my phone on me."

She let out a relieved breath. "You scared me. I was imagining the worst."

"I'll keep it with me next time," I promised before asking, "What's going on?"

"I'm furious!" Lindey's voice came out sharp and full of anger.

I couldn't help but smile. "Who got you mad this time? Matthew?"

"If it were him, I'd knock some sense into him!

Lindey said softly, "Hayden's so lucky to marry you."I gave a small smile, not really feeling the need to say anything. I mean, wasn't I lucky too? After Jace's betrayal, Hayden came into my life like a hero, fixing everything and pulling me out of the mess."How long are you two going to be gone?" Lindey asked.I shrugged, keeping it vague. "No clue."Lindey groaned. "Rea, when you get back, can we hang out? I'm losing it over here."I thought about the whole Jace drama and how Lindey had stepped in, basically kicking Tanya to the curb for me. "Yeah, sure. I'll drop by and see you and Matthew when I'm back."She gave a relieved hum. "Be careful out there, okay? New places and all that.""I will," I promised, before adding, "And, Lindey? Don't stay mad."Another long sigh. "I'll try."After we hung up, I let out a deep breath.Talking to Lindey and Matthew lately felt... draining. I tucked my phone away, glancing at Hayden and Yuna. Whatever they were talking about, Yuna wa

My heart stopped for a second.First, Lindey said Jace was talking like he was leaving some kind of final message. Now Tanya was saying the same thing, like he was getting everything in order for the end. Something was definitely up with Jace.Suddenly, a memory of a dream popped into my head. Jace's voice echoed: 'If I died...'Even though I didn't have any lingering love or hate for him, when it came to life and death, I couldn't just brush it off. Not even if it was about some random dude.Tanya, meanwhile, was a total wreck, crying like the world was ending. But she was sobbing to the wrong person. I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for her, and honestly, comforting her was so not happening.Still, I told her straight, "Jace isn't that kind of guy."Someone who gives up on life just because of a few rough patches? Yeah, that kind of person isn't exactly responsible. If they can't even handle their own problems, there's no way they could be there for anyone else."I don't

As Wayne's words sank in, an image of Jace from our school days flashed in my mind—back when he was carefree, wild, like nothing could touch him. He had zero worries back then.I used to think he'd always be that way, but somewhere along the line, he changed. And now, here we are.Guess the future's unpredictable for a reason."Jace also told me to take care of our parents... and you," Wayne's voice softened even more. "He said when you get married, I should let him know so he can personally give you his blessings."My chest tightened at that. A wave of frustration hit me. Jace had everyone on edge, thinking he was about to do something drastic, when really it seemed like he just wanted to disappear for a while."So, he wasn't actually making arrangements for the end," I muttered bitterly.Wayne sighed on the other end. "Maybe he's dealing with things we don't understand. Everyone has their struggles."I let out a mocking laugh. "Struggles? He's got a wife, a kid, and a career t

I froze, staring blankly at Hayden. His father had been my dad's driver. If the brakes failed, that meant the driver might've been at fault. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. We just stood there, locked in this strange, heavy silence. Finally, Hayden's hand shifted slightly on my shoulder. "My father was driving, so whether it was human error or a mechanical issue, he's responsible."A chill crept through me—not from the cold air, but from the storm brewing inside. If Hayden and I weren't this close, it'd be easy to hold his father accountable. But now, with things the way they were between us, I had no idea what to do if his dad was to blame."Rea," Hayden's voice was steady, sincere. "You know I've been digging into my dad's death. It's all connected. Once I find the truth, I'll tell you everything."I knew Hayden meant it. He wasn't the type to lie or hide things, even if it was about his own family. But if his father was involved, what kind of closure could he really o

So, no matter what was going on inside me, I had to push it aside.Yuna was so pure, so sensitive—almost saint-like in her kindness. I couldn't let my emotions weigh on her.By the time she and Hayden came back from their little chat, I'd already finished my chia pudding and had conveniently started stealing from Hayden's bowl.It was the perfect scene—me sneaking bites, caught in the act. No one would believe I'd been feeling down just minutes ago.Yuna took one look at me pilfering Hayden's food and probably assumed everything was fine between us. We clearly hadn't fought if I was pulling a move like that. Both Hayden and Yuna blinked at me, surprised, like I'd completely thrown them off.I scooped another spoonful of the warm chia pudding and tried to look innocent. "I think... I could go for another bowl.""Oh! I'll make one right now!" Yuna gasped, first looking shocked, then flustered as she hurried to the kitchen."No need. Let her finish mine," Hayden said, sliding his

For the next few days, I kept crashing in Yuna's room.Hayden, the guy who could hold me all night and still stay cool, was handling it just fine. But I couldn't wait to see how he'd manage once we were back in Emberholm, where Yuna would be living with us.We ended up staying at Pencetown for four days, which totally caught me off guard. I figured Hayden would rush to get her surgery scheduled ASAP so she could start recovering. But nope, he took his time. We spent the days fishing, and every evening, he'd cook us these insanely good meals.Yuna and I were living like total princesses, soaking in every minute like we'd stepped into some magical escape, miles away from real life. If we stayed any longer, I wasn't sure I'd ever want to leave."Hayden, when we're old, we should retire here," I said. "I swear, I could live to be 150 in a place like this."Hayden laughed. "Alright.""And me! I want to live to 150 too!" Yuna added, grinning with this bright, newfound excitement for he

Yuna totally understood how serious things were. If this surgery worked, it was like hitting the reset button on her life. If not, well, all this would just turn into a memory."You've got plenty of time for days like this," I said, leaning my head against hers. "Seriously. Trust me."But then, out of nowhere, she switched gears. "Keira, don't be too hard on Hayden. He's stubborn, yeah, and not exactly Mr. Feelings, but he means well. So, go easy on him, okay?"I thought she was spiraling about the surgery and was ready to reassure her when she kept going, "I know you've been low-key punishing him lately."Her words hit, and I felt my face heat up. I gave her a playful poke. "Where do you even come up with this stuff? Stop overthinking.""Don't let my age fool you. I've read so many romance novels. I know exactly what's going on here," Yuna said with this confident little smirk.I didn't even try to deny it. "Yeah, well, he acted all tough, so I let him. Besides, he's been single

"Lie down, let me have a listen," Nate said, slipping the stethoscope from around his neck.We all stood there, watching nervously. Even Hayden—who usually had this calm, unshakable vibe—was visibly tense. But it was just a routine check-up, not the surgery itself.I could feel how much Hayden cherished Yuna in that moment, so I reached for his hand. He glanced at me, and I gave him a reassuring nod.Yuna, though, was frozen, staring at Nate like she'd been turned to stone.Noticing, Lena walked over and leaned in slightly. "Lie down and let Prof. Neumann check your heartbeat. It won't hurt," she said gently.Yuna had already bonded with Lena earlier, so it didn't take much. After a second, she blinked, then finally lay down like an obedient kid.I couldn't help but notice Yuna's cheeks were flushed. There was this tightness in my chest as I saw the way her eyes sparkled—brighter than I'd ever seen.I glanced over at Nate, fully absorbed in his task, pressing the stethoscope to

Lena was so startled that she was about to ask what he was doing when, suddenly, her wrist tightened. A sharp pain shot through her wrist bone, and the heavy weight in her hand disappeared. Aaron held the bracelet, staring at her for two whole seconds before turning around and walking away. Watching his retreating figure, Lena’s lips parted slightly, but in the end, she said nothing. After all, she had planned to return it anyway. Since he wanted to take it back himself, she might as well let him. At least it saved her the trouble of dealing with it. She just wondered what excuse he would come up with to return it on her behalf. Naturally, after that, it would be awkward for her to go back inside. So, she sent a message to Ron, saying that an emergency had come up at the hospital and she had to rush back. At times like this, she was grateful for her profession. No matter when she used this excuse, no one would question it—after all, it was a matter of life and death. Afte

Lena: “...” Who said that just because someone delivers vegetables, the garden is guaranteed to have a bountiful harvest? She glanced at Ron, silently signaling for help. He immediately understood—but instead of refusing on her behalf, he reached out, took her hand, and assisted his grandmother in slipping the bracelet onto her wrist. Lena: “...” She had wanted him to help her reject it! Why was he helping her wear it instead? "If you don’t accept it, my grandma will think you don’t like me and will scold me," Ron whispered, his fingers gently pressing against her hand. Then he lowered his voice even more and added, "Be good." His words weren’t loud, but they were just enough for everyone to hear. Lena shuddered. The sheer cheesiness of it sent a wave of goosebumps across her skin. Left with no other choice, she forced out a polite, "Thank you, Grandpa and Grandma." As she spoke, she unintentionally lifted her gaze—and locked eyes with Aaron. Bright sunlight streamed

Lena didn’t need to turn around to recognize the voice—she had just heard it last night. "Aunt Xandra," Lena greeted Xandra, who approached her excitedly. "It really is you!" Xandra looked at Ron in surprise. "Cousin, so Lena is your girlfriend?" Ron raised an eyebrow. "Why is she calling you ‘Aunt Xandra’?" Xandra blushed slightly, and Lena explained, "She’s my uncle’s girlfriend." "Oh? What a coincidence. Looks like we’re about to become one big happy family," Ron teased, his tone laced with amusement. Lena hadn’t expected to run into Xandra there. Fortunately, her relationship with Ron was fake—otherwise, things would get complicated. If she called Xandra "Aunt Xandra" while Xandra called Ron "Cousin," their family connections would become a mess. "Your uncle will be here soon. I’m waiting for him," Xandra said cheerfully, making Lena’s head ache. Why did she keep running into Aaron wherever she went? There was no avoiding him. "Well, you wait here. We’re heading i

Perhaps he had made the announcement and left early to avoid any awkward encounters. Lena’s mind spun with possibilities as she made her way downstairs and into the courtyard. "Good morning, my dearest Grandpa, Grandma, and Mother." Their moods were bright, so she decided to match their cheerfulness. "Awake already?" her grandmother responded first. Lena ran over to her, wrapping her arms around her shoulders and planting a kiss. "Grandma, you smell amazing." "Of course I do! I used the perfume Xandra gave me—it’s from the Little Carriage collection. Isn’t it divine?" her grandmother replied with a proud smile. The "Little Carriage" her grandmother referred to was a designer perfume brand. Her grandmother had always loved dressing up, doing her makeup, and using YSL international perfumes. Xandra clearly knew how to cater to her tastes. No doubt Aaron had told her exactly what to buy. Lena moved over to Briana, wrapping her in a hug as well and lowering her voice to ask

Lena had been feigning sleep so perfectly, yet who would’ve thought Aaron would pull a move like this? What was she supposed to do now? She didn’t dare move. Any movement would make things even more awkward. So, she kept up the act, letting Aaron carry her upstairs and open her bedroom door. Her face was pressed against his chest, so she discreetly opened her eyes, but all she could see was his white shirt and catch the clean, refreshing scent of pinewood on him. Yes, pinewood. It wasn’t the scent of makeup, nor was it perfume. Did this mean he hadn’t hugged Xandra? That nothing intimate had happened between them? The thought barely crossed her mind before she mentally rolled her eyes at herself. What are you thinking? If he hugged or kissed his girlfriend, wouldn’t that be completely normal? Lena, come to your senses! This is your Uncle Aaron. Whether he’s part of the Ace family or not, he’s still your Uncle Aaron. Uncle Aaron… As she repeated the title in her mind

"You silly girl, what nonsense are you spouting?" Briana gave Lena a light slap on the arm. "Mom, if I marry Uncle Aaron, then he won’t have a reason to leave, right? Isn’t that a good thing?" Lena continued to test the waters. "Good thing? What good is there in that? Do you have any idea how many people would gossip about you, me, and the Ace family if that happened?" Briana’s concerns mirrored Lena’s own fears. "But Uncle Aaron has already stated that he’s no longer part of the Ace family. Who would still have anything to say?" Lena argued, trying to persuade her mother. Briana shook her head. "People will always find something to gossip about. Even if he’s not part of the Ace family, they’ll still wag their tongues." "Didn’t you always say, ‘Walk your own path and let others talk’? Let them say what they want. It’s not like we’re losing a piece of flesh," Lena quipped, spouting her own brand of twisted logic. Briana finally realized something was off. She twisted Lena’s

"I'm just amazed that pregnancy has made you smarter. Most people say pregnancy makes women forgetful for three years," Hayden teased Keira with a rare grin. Keira gave him a gentle kick. "Did Aaron ask you to pass on his thoughts?" "No, it's just what I think," Hayden replied earnestly. He would never lie to her. Keira sighed softly. "Love between two people isn’t something outsiders can meddle with. But maybe Aaron’s actions today will help Lena realize what’s in her heart." "Let’s wait and see," Hayden said, finishing the massage before applying lotion and stretch mark cream to Keira's belly. "Baby, give Dad a little kick," Hayden said, stroking her belly. Right after he spoke, the baby really did kick. Keira couldn’t help but laugh; this little one was so obedient to their dad. "Just a few kicks, alright? Mommy needs to sleep, so don’t bother her," Hayden instructed. The baby obediently kicked a few more times before settling down. Keira was curious. "I think our ba

Keira stared at the messages Lena had just sent her. She could sense something was up, so she immediately called her, but Lena declined the call. Instead, she replied with another message: [I’m at my grandparents’ house, and my mother is here too.] Keira had no choice but to keep texting her: [Did Aaron upset you today?] Lena sent Keira a string of ellipses. That endless row of dots made her even more curious. [What happened exactly?] Keira pressed. Lena replied: [He brought his girlfriend home today.] After sending that message, she also sent Keira a screenshot of a payment receipt and added: [Spot the highlight.] Keira zoomed in on the image and finally noticed the note: Name Change Fee. [Wow, how generous! 600,000 dollars just for a name change fee. What did you call her to make it worth that much?] Keira was shocked. Lena then sent Keira a voice message, explaining the situation in detail. At the end, she added: [He used to tell me how long he’d liked me, but now he’s

"Aaron, I want to add Lena on WhatsApp." Xandra actually asked Aaron, gently tugging on his sleeve with a delicate and endearing expression that made her look pitifully lovable. Aaron glanced at her, his gaze filled with a warmth Lena was all too familiar with. Once upon a time, he had looked at her the same way. Now, he could look at other women like that. So, never believe a man when he says things like, I've liked you for years. "If you want to add her, then add her," Aaron's approval made Xandra look at him with delight. Lena, however, truly didn’t want to add her. She and Xandra weren’t close, and they likely wouldn’t ever be. Lena didn’t enjoy socializing with strangers, so she smiled faintly. "Aren’t you afraid I might tell her something about you, Uncle Aaron?" Aaron’s gaze turned cold and distant, his voice calm. "There’s nothing about me that Xandy can’t know." Ha! Lena sneered inwardly. If that were the case, why had he just warned her earlier? Double stand
