I sat up with a gasp that bordered on a scream.

My hand flew over to my mouth as short gasps burst out of me unrhythmically. My heart was racing, my vision was filled with splotches of darkness and every part of me trembled with fear.

I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think and I couldn’t feel anything other than the visceral feeling of fear that continued to make me tremble in place.

I gripped the sheets and forced myself to relax the way I had many other times. I shut my eyes and sucked in long, slow breaths.

There was a buzzing in my ears, and I dug my fingers into my skin and tried to reign myself back into reality.

I wasn’t at my father’s house.

I wasn’t back in that place.

I wasn’t locked in my room praying that the moon goddess would save me.

I was in my room, in the mansion, and far away from his reach. Da’ana was at her fancy care home, far away from his reach too…

I’m safe, I’m safe, I’m safe…

We’re safe.

I repeated those words until I believed them a
