AVA

The next morning, the twins insisted on joining Beta Alexander and I at the training ground for our 5am run. Of course since they were on two legs they couldn’t keep up, but we took it in turns carrying them around the forest for a while. Callum loved it when I took him; Noah was nervous at first and thought I was going to crash into a tree, but when he settled, he just wanted to keep going.

I high fived Beta Alexander after our run, chucking a bottle of water over to him which he caught easily. “Hey, Ava?” he shouted.

“Mmm?” I turned to look at him, water bottle still in my hand.

“Think fast.”

He sprinted at me, going straight for my legs.

I rolled out of the way, spinning back to my feet a few metres away from where I started. When he ran for me again, I was ready.

I dropped to the ground and spun, kicking his legs out from underneath him.

He skidded across the floor from the momentum that he had been carrying, scowling at me when he stood. I shrugged. “You always taught me not

A comfortable silence settled between us, full of shared history and unspoken love. My father had been our rock after mum died—steady, strong, never letting his grief overwhelm his devotion to raising us."Actually," I said, breaking the silence, "I was hoping you might visit after Christmas. For New Year's. All of you… you, Ava's parents, Alpha Marcus and Luna Amelia.""We'd love to," he replied without hesitation. "It's been too long since we've seen you all. This winter's kept everyone close to home.""Tell me about it," I sighed, glancing out the window at the endless white landscape. "We've been fighting these storms for weeks. Theo's up north helping with emergency relief.""Marcus mentioned that. He's been coordinating support from our end as well." There was a pause before he added, "If we come for New Year's, we'll have to bring Jamie too. The little monster doesn't like any of our babysitters."I chuckled at the mention of Alpha Marcus and Luna Amelia's son. Jamie Hughes, fi

I drummed my fingers against the polished surface of Ava's desk, my eyes wandering across her office as I waited. The space felt different without her in it—quieter somehow, despite the fact that my queen rarely made much noise when she worked. Her scent lingered everywhere, honey and wildflowers woven into the fabric of the chair, the papers, the very air itself. Outside, snow continued its relentless descent, transforming the kingdom into a world of white. I'd been banned from the great hall after "excessive tinsel deployment" (Noah's words, not mine), so Ava's empty office had become my sanctuary while she attended the council meeting. With Christmas just days away, I still hadn't found the perfect gift for my queen. The blank parchment before me mocked my lack of inspiration. I'd already scribbled down and crossed out a dozen ideas. Jewelry seemed too impersonal—Ava had drawers full of it, much of it unworn. Books were Noah's territory; he always knew exactly which obscure histori

Lana worked in silence for a moment, setting the chocolate-dipped pastries on a cooling rack in perfect rows. Then she looked up, a hesitant smile touching her lips. "Would you like to try something? It might help, at least for a moment.""Always," I replied, grateful for the distraction. Her smile widened slightly as she reached beneath the counter and produced a clean plate. With careful movements, she arranged an assortment of tiny pastries and biscuits in an artful display, then placed a small pot of the chocolate sauce she'd been using beside them."I've been experimenting with a new chocolate dipping sauce," she explained, sliding the plate toward me. "It has a hint of orange and cinnamon, with just a touch of chili for warmth. The kitchen staff have been my guinea pigs all day, but I'd value your opinion."I picked up one of the tiny pastries—a delicate puff filled with what looked like cream—and dipped it into the chocolate sauce. The moment it touched my tongue, my eyes widen

The afternoon slipped away as I lost myself in festival preparations, finding comfort in the small decisions that required my attention. The exact placement of the ceremonial candles. The seating arrangement for the feast. The prizes for the competitions. Each tiny choice pulled my mind away from the image of Theo battling through snowdrifts, away from the gnawing worry that he might not return in time.As twilight descended, turning the snow-covered landscape outside the windows to shades of lavender and blue, a servant approached to inform me that Noah, Callum, and Oscar were in the south wing, organising emergency supplies to be sent out at first light."Would you like me to fetch them, Your Majesty?" he asked, clearly noting the weariness I was failing to hide.I shook my head. "No need. They're doing important work." The supplies would help packs struggling with shortages caused by the storms—including, perhaps, the northern pack that Theo had gone to assist. "I'll find them late

I stood by the enormous window in the great hall, watching snowflakes drift like fragments of stars against the darkening sky. My breath created ghostly patterns on the glass as I pressed my palm against its cold surface, feeling the bite of winter even through the castle's thick walls. Four days since Theo had left. Four days of sleeping in a bed that felt too large despite still having three kings to fill it. Four days of Artemis pacing restlessly in my mind, missing Hermes with an ache that mirrored my own. The Christmas decorations around me—pine boughs heavy with crystalline ornaments, red ribbons cascading from chandeliers, candles flickering in evergreen wreaths—seemed to mock me with their festive cheer. What was Christmas without all five of us together?*He'll come back,* Artemis insisted, though I could feel her doubt curling beneath the words like smoke. *Hermes promised.*"Promises can't clear twenty-foot snowdrifts," I murmured, my finger tracing the path of a single sno

The moment stretched between us, fragile and perfect. Then duty reasserted itself in the form of a clock chiming the hour from the wall. Each resonant tone pulled me further from this bubble we'd created, reminding me of the team assembling in the courtyard, the supplies being loaded into vehicles, the wolves waiting for their king."I have to go," I said again, the words no easier the second time.Ava nodded, rising gracefully to her feet and pulling me up with her. Her hand found the back of my neck, drawing me down to her level as she pressed her lips to mine. The kiss tasted of goodbye and promise, of longing and return. I deepened it, pouring everything I couldn't say into the connection between us—my frustration, my devotion, my unwavering commitment to return to her side. When we parted, her cheeks were flushed, her eyes bright with unshed tears she would never allow to fall. My queen was stronger than that."I love you," she said simply. "Be safe, be swift, and come back to me
