Chapter 9
IT FELT WEIRD. Sitting on the couch with a saucer of cake while Roam was next to me just gave me goosebumps for reasons I could not decipher. My fear subsided earlier at the sight of his sweet smile, as if my memory of him being a monster I should be scared of suddenly went blurry.
I swallowed the piece of cake in my mouth before I threw him another glance. He was busy eating like me when I noticed the icing left on the corner of his lips. When he licked it off before he chewed, I felt my throat went dry as I watched his jaw moved.
Dear God, I know my points in heaven have been decreasing eversince I got here, but for once, I'd like to blame you for sculpting such well-defined jaw...
I looked away instantly when he gazed at me. My heart did the crazy drum roll-like beat again as I pretend to be admiring the cake I was slicing with my fork. This organ better behave before I volunteer for a transplant once I was out of here.
"What's on your mind, Jemimah?" he asked when he noticed that I was uncomfortable.
You. I almost answered. "N--Nothing." I put my fork down and stole a glance at his now worried face. "How did... how did you know it's my birthday?"
Putting his saucer on the table, he heaved a sigh then rested his palms on his thighs. "Is that the question you really wanna ask?"
No. I had lots of things in my head but I was sure he wouldn't bother answering me. "Why are you keeping me here? My father's probably looking for me and..." My chest went heavy as I remembered my dad. "We had a fight before all of these happened. This is my first birthday that I don't get to spend with him."
I noticed how his eyes turned soft. He bowed his head and clenched his fists until his knuckles were white before he answered me. "I told you, I'm just trying to keep you safe."
"Safe from who? Because I don't remember I ever had a death threat."
"Jem." His head lifted and he leaned towards me again, his arm rested on the couch behind my shoulders. "It's hard to explain right now but I need you to stay here with me."
I breathed in deeply. Hesitating at first, I looked him straight in the eye and asked him one of the many questions that were creeping in my head. "What are you, Roam?"
His pools became one shade darker and his lips pursed hardly together. "I'm a lycan."
My heart almost stopped as I blinked twice. "A w--what?"
He shut his eyes for a moment, his adam's apply bobbed up and down when he swallowed hard. "I said I'm a lycan," he repeated before he opened his eyes again and looked at me.
I swore I almost felt my blood left my body as I stared back at him, realizing he was telling the truth. His pools were now golden like the morning sun painted with his fear to be judged, of his plea to be understood and accepted.
I knew I must scream and show him fear, but in that moment that he let me see a softer side of a real monster, I found nothing in my heart but the urge to ease away the worry in his eyes.
"In case you're not getting it, he's part wolfie," a man in the doorstep said, startling me.
Roam and I looked at the stranger. I heard Roam curse under his breath as he narrowed his pools at the man with a silly red hair, dressed like a nineteenth century aristocrat. His skin was even paler than mine and his eyes... why was it like the shade of blood?
"What are you doing here, Yzmael?" Roam asked in an irritated tone, his inky brows almost meeting each other.
"Relax." The man he called Yzmael straightened his back before he pulled out something from his tux's pocket. "I just came here to hand my gift." His eyes looked at me before he smiled, showing off his perfect set of pearl-white teeth. "Happy birthday, sweetness!"
My forehead wrinkled. "W--Who's that?" I glanced at Roam. "What is he?"
"Oh!" Yzmael chuckled then grinned. "I'm a vampire and I like warm blood," he said, mimicking Elsa's younger voice in the movie "Frozen".
Roam groaned. "Get outta here, fucker."
My breathing hitched. "A... a... a vampire?" I blinked. "Why aren't you turning into ashes?"
Yzmael burst into a laugh like what I said was the most hilarious thing he had ever heard. "Ah, books and movies vampire references get me crackling all the time."
A sigh escaped Roam's lips before he turned to me. "He's one of the first vampires in history. His resistance to the sun is way stronger than ordinary vampires," he said in a low tone as if he's trying to break it to me in a way that would not freak me out.
Great. I just found out what he truly was and now there's a vampire standing at the door. Why would I freak out, right?
"Aren't you gonna invite me in? I'm immune with the sun but it still burns, you know."
Roam glared at him. "No."
"But I came here for the cake." He pouted in purpose then did a ridiculous puppy eyes.
"I said get the fuck out of here. I don't want the others to sniff your arse and find us here."
My eyes widened. "The others? Oh my gosh, Roam is it the vampires who are after me?"
Roam looked at me, worried. "No, no, no it's..." He sighed. "It's not like that."
"He's right. They aren't after you. They're after him." Yzmael pointed at Roam before he faked a Mona Lisa smile. "Can I have my piece of cake now so I can leave?"
With his head shaking, Roam took the rest of the cake and walked towards the door. "Here. Now erase your tracks and leave." He pushed the guy and slammed the door before turning to me again. "Sorry about that."
I jerked my head up then pressed my trembling knees together. I didn't even realize how shaky I already was until now. What kind of world did I get sucked into? Seriously, did I magically get trapped inside a gothic book?
The couch waved when Roam settled next to me. "Are you alright?"
"I don't know," I said with a heavy breath. "I wish you're just pulling a birthday prank here."
"You have nothing to be scared of, Ahuvi. Yzmael is a nice guy. He just happened to have some loose screw in his head but he's a good friend."
Yeah, right. As if Yzmael was the only one I should be worried about.
"Do you want another cup of coffee?" Roam asked but I only answered him with a slight nod.
I gasped when he leaned towards me and held me by my chin. My eyes widened as I trapped the air in my throat, trying not to squeal like a flattered penguin in Antartica.
My cheeks threatened to blush when he gently stroke the corner of my lips to wipe off the mess on my face. He then stared into my eyes as he brought his thumb to his mouth to suck it. The butterflies in my stomach turned into cheerleaders as my heart beat loudly again.
He grabbed my empty cup and stood up. "Stay here. I'll get you more."
Maybe I should ask for a glass of pesticides instead, because these stupid butterflies weren't behaving well whenever my heart was betraying me.
I bowed my head to hide my reddened face before I took a larger piece of cake and shove it inside my mouth, stopping myself from engaging in a conversation with him which might lead to me getting controlled again by a demon inside me called heart.
He patted my shoulder, his gesture sent a wave of electricity all throughout my body. Now the butterflies were back to life, ready to bug me again. I shook my head. What a great way to celebrate my birthday.
When we finished eating, I hurried back inside the room and dipped myself in the tub. It was too early for a warm bath but if I wouldn't do anything to calm myself, I would end up doing something stupid, like falling for Roam's dangerous trap.
My eyes stared at the white ceiling as I leaned my head on the edge of the tub. Roam was a lycan, a beast to be exact. That only meant that my dream could possibly come true. He could kill me someday despite his promises that he'd never hurt me.
I heaved a sigh and shut my eyes. I would need to get out of here before he would lose control but in order to do that, I would need him to trust me. He should believe that I could never attempt to leave him while he wasn't home.
But how?
My lips pursed together when I realized there was only one way to earn his trust. I must make him think that I was falling for him...
Chapter 10I COULDN'T help it. I just wanted to greet the morning sun when I went to the porch but after seeing Roam effortlessly cut the giant trunks of woods with his axe like he was Thor, I found myself staring at his sexy back like it was a once in a lifetime phenomena to have a sight of his majestic bod.His back muscles would flex with his every movement, yet with all the force I assumed was needed to cut such large pieces of woods, I wondered why he was not sweating as much as I was expecting? Not that I found it sexy when a man was doing manly stuff and their skin were sparkling because of their sweat. I was just... oh, right. I figured it out. Was it because he wasn't normal?"You nasty, nasty mind. Since when did you built allegiance with my stupid heart, hmm? He ain't someone to fangirl over," I murmured to myself. Great. Now I was sure I was losing my mind.I sighed and looked at Roam again but what he did next
Chapter 11ROAM made us dinner early. He tried to bring up something to talk about while we shared our meal but everytime it was my turn to tell him about my life back in my town, I would see him glancing at the clock as if it was a ticking bomb that would explode once the Sun was finally set."Sorry." He cleared his throat and drew his attention back to his pasta. "You were saying?"I heaved a silent sigh and reached for my glass of water. "I said many girls from my school dreams to be a werewolf's mate." I took a sip. "What exactly is that?"I saw the corner of his lips lifted for a sly smile. "It's uhm, like a soul connection. A unique one chosen by the Moon Goddess. Mates share a powerful bond. They get to feel each other's feelings, communicate thru their minds, and heal each other once the bond was established.""Huh. That's weird." I rested my chin on my fisted hand. "You mean to tell me that that's similar to lycan
Chapter 12IT ALL HAPPENED TOO FAST. The magic his touch was sending all throughout my body burned me instantly as we stared at each other with nothing but familiarity in the strands of our pools. It was as if our souls had waited forever just to be reunited, and even though I barely understood where this recognition was coming from, I gave in to something I knew I'd regret."Jemimah..." he called me hoarsely, struggling to get a hold of himself. He was looking more dangerous when he's like this, but it was the kind of danger I didn't think I should be fearing about.I knew I should never play with fire I could never kill, but the moment Roam stroke my jaw with his rough finger, my eyes glistened with the same raw desire I was seeing in his eyes. "You just saved me, Ahuvi... You saved me again..."Warmth clawed my heart as I gave him a small, genuine smile. "You scared me, but I'm happy you're okay now."His eyes sparkled with sheer h
Chapter 13THE MAN dragged me away from Roam until we're almost twenty yards away. When I managed to hit his chin with my head, his hold on me loosen. I took the chance and get off his grip. My hands held the rifle and aimed it at him, ready to shoot him 'til he would drop to the ground."Woah! Hold your horses, sugar! That's gonna burn!" he said, his hands in the air as if surrendering. My brows furrowed. "Yzmael?"He released a relieved sigh then rubbed his chest. "Yeah." Glancing at Roam and the wolf, he held the gun and made me point it on the ground. "Let Roam deal with him.""What?" My eyes drifted back to Roam. "But why? Aren't you gonna help? You're a vampire."Yzmael scratched his temple and flashed an awkward grin. "Uh, that's the thing." He entwined his fingers and placed his enclasped hands on his nape. "I am so I shouldn't meddle with their business.""But..." Fear rose from my chest as I watched
Chapter 14I COULDN'T take my eyes off Roam's chest. We were back in the house and we're at the living room to take care of his wounds. He had lots of cuts and scratches but what bothered me a lot was the ripped part of his chest. He insisted I to keep me close even when I was terrified. I did not understand what was going on, and when Roam looked into my worried pools, he let out a sigh and laid his back comfortably on the backrest of the couch. Well, he wasn't entirely comfortable. His forehead was creased and pain was visible in his eyes."Shouldn't you remove your necklace so we can take care of your wounds better--""No." His jaw locked and I saw his eyes darkened, telling me he didn't like my suggestion at all.My forehead creased even more. "Oh--kay? Fine. Don't remove it. No big deal. You don't have to be grumpy." I shook my head when I remembered how he behaved when we first met and during the time I first woke up
Chapter 15I KNEW Roam saw the hint of curiosity on my face when I went to the porch to see the smoke coming from a distance. My hands gripped on the handrail, and with my mouth halfway opened, I drifted my gaze towards Roam and Ymzael. My hand lifted in the air as I pointed at the smoke with my brows almost meeting. "W--What's going on there?"Roam threw Yzmael a meaningful glance before he looked at me again. "Don't leave the house. We'll see what it is."My grip on the handrail tightened. The sun was about to set and looked like some campers started a bonfire to keep them warm for the night. If that would be the case then I would need to go to them. They could be my ticket out of here but... was I ready to go?The thought of leaving Roam brought a tug in my chest but I immediately pushed the stupid feelings aside. This was the perfect time to leave, right? Before I fully lose my sanity and give in to whatever Ro
Chapter 16MY HEART banged hardly inside my chest as horror sketch on my face. Vampires, but unlike Yzmael, they looked--lifeless, and undeniably terrifying. Their complexion were too pale and bluish veins appear underneath their skin. Darkness was already conquering the bleeding sky, and as I looked into their scarlet eyes, I saw nothing but their hunger for something. My eyes widened when I realized what they were craving for. My blood. They were hungry for my blood...The painful truth about the real world suck into my mind. I was a mere human. One of the creatures who would always belong at the bottom of the food chain while people like them exist, hiding in plain sight, blending with their preys and ready to attack once the perfect moment would come. One of them held me by my hair and pulled me up. I groaned in pain, unable to get off the blonde's grip. It felt like my scalp was getting stripped off my skull but they didn't seem to care

Chapter 30RoamIZZY drove the car while Jemimah and I were on the backseat. She was silent since we left Zenios, her eyes were staring blankly outside while her cat was on her lap.No one dared to talk the entire ride as we left Nirvana District, and when we reached the border, Izzy stopped the car and rubbed his palms on his face.Worry crossed my face as I observed Izzy. He didn't seem much of himself right now, but I knew there was something else that was bothering him besides what Nimpha and Hymer had done.A sigh left my lips. I leaned forward and rested my hand on Jemimah's thigh before I spoke. "Let's take a stop in the next town."Izzy glanced at me through the rearview mirror before he slightly nodded his head. The look on his face began to bother me. Seems like Izzy got some bad news to spill once the two of us were finally alone."Roam?" Jemimah called when the car started moving.I g
Chapter 29THERE WAS a moment in my life when I thought I would never feel anything like what my parents had. I used to watch them dance in the kitchen while mom was cooking dinner. Dad would always come home with a bunch of flowers and mom would look at him as if forever lies in his hands.I never thought the butterflies that weren't real, until I felt Roam's warm but minty breath against my bare skin, burning me in the most beautiful way.A sensual moan threatened to escape my throat when he began kissing the side of my neck, his rough palms were busy doing wonders on my body. He was on top of me wearing nothing anymore but his boxers, his hardness gently brushing against my throbbing sex everytime he was moving his hips.I couldn't help but squeeze my eyes shut as he nibbled my skin. Everytime he was grazing his teeth against my shoulder, I'd shiver in pure ecstasy. God, he was everything heavenly, and here I was, a saint turn
Chapter 28NIMPHA helped me get ready for the sealing ceremony. The Luna gave me an off-shoulder white dress that's reaching my toes while Nimpha braded my hair into a crown with some strands falling on the sides of my face. She also put on some make up on my face to finish the look, and honestly, I had never admired myself as much as I did when I looked in the mirror."It feels like looking at a complete stranger," I uttered, still staring at myself in the mirror while Nimpha was standing behind me, holding me by my shoulders. She giggled. "Silly! You're beautiful even without all these. And now, to complete the look..." She grabbed the bouquet of pink roses on the dresser and handed it to me with a sweet smile plastered on her face. "Here you go, bride."Bride...My cheeks blushed with the word she used. I wasn't able to respond, and honestly, I didn't know exactly what to feel about all these.Nimpha's smile faded and
Chapter 27I DIDN'T know my vocabulary was too small until I saw the majestic falls near the border of Zenios and Claivan pack. The inner borders were not entirely guarded by Deltas because Nirvana people follow their rules strictly. One of those was to never cross the border unless invited by the territory's leader. My eyes were widened like a kid who'd seen Disneyland for the first time. My lips were widely open as I stared at the beautiful masterpiece in front of us. No, I didn't really think there was a word that's already invented that could give justice to it.Not that I was being emotional but the sight of it almost made me tear up. It has freaking layers of basin-like white rocks where the bluish water flows from the top. Its sound alone was calming already. Now I couldn't wait anymore to dive into it.Birds chirped as it hopped from one tree to another. Large oak trees lined up around, and goodness if this place wasn't p
Chapter 26I HAD NEVER seen such chaotic breakfast. People flooded the huge dining area as if I was in a school cafeteria. Large tables were full of food for about sixty people. They were teasing each other. One of them even jumped on top of a table and did a "Magic Mic".Nimpha who, of course, was locked in her boyfriend's arms again, grabbed a mug sitting on the corner table as soon as we got inside. She threw it across the room, aiming for the Channing-wannabe.I gasped as I watched with a horrified face, but the guy caught it right before the poor mug hit the back of his neck. His expressive, sparkly perhaps, pair of honeycomb eyes similar to Lawrence, narrowed at Nimpha. "What? You don't want others to see this?"Roam suddenly covered my eyes when the guy lifted his shirt to expose his ab muscles. I removed his hand before I looked at him, slightly disappointed but my mate (oh, wow! Where did my confidence to say that
Chapter 25ZENIOS was a village in the heart of Nirvana. Although people in their pack seemed normal, there was something about them that would give away what they truly were. When Lawrence parked the truck a few meters away from the biggest house in the village, Izzy carried Miss Elizabeth's crate. I hopped out, but when I saw Lawrence opened the door for Nimpha, my heart suddenly felt... jealous. My shoulders became heavy and a shallow sigh left my lips when I remembered Roam.Izzy anchored his arm on my shoulders before he gave my arm a gentle squeeze. "You're worrying again. Told you, your mate's too strong to be killed by those petty hunters."If they were petty then why did we have to leave our house in the woods? Something was just not adding up here.I heard Nimpha giggle. When I looked at them again, she was already sitting on the hood of the truck with Lawrence standing between her parted legs. His arms were wrapped around N
Chapter 24WHEN we got to the main road, Roam removed his motorbike's cover then gave Izzy the car keys. I just stood a meter away from him, watching him in a worried way as he pushed his motorbike to the asphalt road."Jem, get in," Izzy called me.I looked over my shoulder and saw Izzy getting inside the driver's seat already after putting Miss Elizabeth's crate in the backset. I didn't like what I was sensing. My heart felt so heavy I didn't know why.Swallowing the pool of saliva in my throat, I returned my gaze towards Roam again. He rode his motorbike already and was about to wear his helmet when I called him. "Roam, wait!"Roam paused and looked at me, his expression was still serious as if none of this should be taken lightly anymore.I balled my fists and went to him without breaking our gaze. When I reached his side, I breathed out my hesitation and held him by his arm. His gaze drifted to my hand but I ju
Chapter 23"YOU WILL find out everything soon, I promise." Roam stood up and offered me his hand. "Your mother will tell you herself."Roam's words confused me even more. How could he say that? My mother died before. If she didn't then... I don't know anymore if I could forgive her for leaving us. I suffered since the day she left. Pain consumed me until the only way left for me to escape it was making myself believe she would never return anymore. My chest tightened as I looked at Roam's hand. I didn't want to believe that my mom was still alive because if she was, then that means I would end up hating her. I don't want that. My mother was too perfect in my memories.I took in some air and shook my head, my emotions were beginning to suffocate me already. "No. Mom died when I was young.""She didn't, but your father is blaming me for what happened. That's why he was hunting me down. That's why he joined the hunters in the first place
Chapter 22RoamSYD WATCHED the door shut behind him before he let out the suffocating air in his lungs. He sat on the same spot where Jemimah was earlier, and with the way his jaw clenched, I could tell he was not happy."What? Change of plans, Uncle?" he asked with the tone I didn't like at all.My fists clenched on my sides as I narrowed my eyes at my nephew. This wasn't the Syril Dawson I left in Esmeray. He was compassionate, respectful, and lively. Even the cheerful glow in his green eyes were gone, and all I could see was a total stranger.I heaved a sigh. "You know I loved Halia."He laughed, a mocking one as he shook his head in disappointment. "How sure are you even that she's really Luna Halia, hmm?"With my eyes piercing at him, my arms folded in front of my chest. "I know. It's not that hard to tell. My heart is too familiar with her soul for me not to know she's the one I once lost.""You mean the ve
