Amber’s POV
Jumping to my feet, I whirled around, making sure I kept my eyeballs glued to my feet. Who was it that found me, and what punishment would I face this time for being caught out here? That was the thought that ran through my mind until I heard the most angelic voice that could ever exist. “What are you doing out here, Lady, when everyone else is celebrating a successful red moon? Or do you have no intention of finding your mate?” The man said, causing my heart to stir. If his voice had a taste, then it would be vanilla and cinnamon, which complemented his cedarwood scent perfectly. “I asked you a question, lady. Common courtesy demands that you answer.” His voice was too sweet for my weak heart; still, I could not bring myself to look at his face. I had never heard or smelled anyone so... so glorious in the pack. Was he an outsider? A peek would give me an answer to my questions, but I could not risk it. An involuntary whimper escaped my throat, my lower lip quivering pathetically. “I’m s-sorry,” I stuttered, throwing myself away from him. “I only came out here for air. Please, don’t punish me.” “Interesting,” his deep, sweet voice rumbled. “Are you usually punished for going out for air?” Rough fingers came under my chin, pushing my face up until I was looking into a river of grey and blue eyes. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. The man before me was the very definition of the word handsome. His dark hair was slickedback, and it almost gleamed in the moonlight, but his eyes were what held my heart captive until I realized who I was andwhat might happen if I was caught here like this. “I—I thought I was alone.” I squirmed out of his grip, only stopping when I was a safe distance from him. I had no idea who this man was, but I could feel the power radiating off him, even without my wolf. One hit and I would be six feet under, no shortcuts. As tempting as that thought was, I would rather not die here with a stranger. “Come forward.” He ordered. I took a hesitant step forward and kept my eyes to the ground, waiting for the blow that I knew was coming. “Don’t shy away from me, girl. I am not going to hit you. Your scent... it is different, yet you are a werewolf?” My brows creased. He did not know me? I was famous around here for my wolfishness. That meant he was an outsider then. I should breathe a sigh of relief, but what if he was worse than my pack members? I kept my guards up. “Are you without your wolf?” I nodded, waiting for the laughter of mockery, which never came. I peeked up at him from below my brows, wondering why he did not laugh or why he did not find my wolfishness weird like the others did. “How long has this been?” he growled. “How long have you been bound?” My head snapped up with such force that I was sure I heard my bones crack. “What do you mean, bound?” I queried. Clearly this was his way of mocking me. He was no different from the rest then. “My wolf is not bound. I simply do not have a wolf.” He nodded. “I see. And how long have you had to believe that?” I whipped my head down, thinking of all the punishments I would have to endure for speaking back to this man. A whipping? A visit to the well? How long would I have to stay without food? Maybe I would be tied at the post like last time. “... because I can see your wolf, but you clearly cannot.” I shook my head, taking a step back. I had endured enough this night to stand here and be insulted by a stranger, no matter how handsome he was or what punishment I would face. It wouldn’t be worse than the others. “What is your name, girl?” she asked before I could flee. “I am Dale Wolf, but most people just like to call me Alpha.” he said when I hesitated to answer. I lowered my head even more. Shit, he was an Alpha, and I looked into his eyes. It was no wonder his aura was so powerful and dominating. Was he really an Alpha? I have never heard of any Alpha with that name. “Amber, sir.” I conceded. The man, Alpha Dale, leaned forward, carefully placing his rough hands on my shoulder. Only then did I realize that I was still naked and I was standing in front of a man in the middle of the fucking forest. “Just like your eyes.” I took a step back, wincing as his hand fell heavily back to his side. “I—I should get going now. If I am caught here like this...”I turned around before the rest of the words poured from my lips and fled, leaving the strange man behind. My clothes are still at the same spot where I had left them—thankfully—but so are a couple who, upon closer inspection, turned out to be Alpha Derrick? And the moon priestess? What were we still doing out by this time when the rest of the pack was on the hunt? Wasn’t Alpha Derrick supposed to be leading the hunt? The answer to that question was not something I wanted to know, nor was it something that concerned me. If any of them felt my presence around here... I hated to think of what would happen. Gathering my clothes, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, not stopping till I was in front of my home. I had no idea when I slept off after hitting my pillows last night, but a harsh knock on my door roused me from a dreamless sleep. Catapulting myself to the door as fast as I could manage, I peeled the door open to find Lydia standing in front of my door. I groaned inwardly. What fresh hell brought this woman to my door this early? “The moon goddess bless you,” I greeted, lowering my head. “Don’t you think you need that blessing more than me? Go wash up; you stink,” she said, scrunching her nose. “The Alpha is asking for your presence in his office immediately.” My heart missed a beat. I was in trouble? Did they sense me yesterday? What punishment would he give me? “Quickly!” Lydia shrieked, startling me. “I don’t have all day.” It did not take me more than five minutes to finish preparing. Five minutes was how thin I knew I could stretch Lydia’s patience without it snapping. Any longer and I hated to think what would happen. Together, we hurried to Alpha Derrick’s office. The last thing I wanted was to be punished for something I could have prevented. “Alpha Derrick,” I greeted as we stepped into the office. A harsh glare from him was what greeted me in return. “You asked for me.” “Slave, do you know this man here?” he asked, gesturing to the man sitting across from him. My cheeks flamed, not from embarrassment but because I knew exactly who was sitting there. Our encounter yesterday was still fresh in my head. I glanced at the stranger’s face at the same time his bluish-grey eyes fell on me, and I lowered my headimmediately. Biting my lower lip, I glance around the room. Do I lie or tell the truth?Which would not get me... my brainfroze when I caught Alpha Derrick’s glare. Slowly, I nodded. “Yes. He is Alpha Dale.” Alpha Derrick nodded. “Alpha Dale here is not just any Alpha; he is the Lycan King.” I gasped, immediately bringing myhand to my mouth to mute the sound, but it was too late. All eyes in the room were already on me. “Are you aware of thatfact?” I shook my head. “I see,” he continued, drumming his fingers on the table. “I was just telling the Lycan King here that I was going to take you as a mate, and he wanted to meet you in person.” Alpha Dale—the Lycan King—glanced at me with a look I could not translate. “You say she is a slave?” he asked with his eyes still on me. “Yes. It is how she repays our pack for taking her in many years ago.” Alpha Derrick replied. I had heard this story many times, but it still irked me. Forceful payment, you mean? Which came with punishments and whatnots? “As much as I would love to go into details about her past and how she came to be in this position, I would love to say one thing first.” This time, he turned his attention back to Alpha Derrick, and he did not look so happy. I wrung my hands, wondering what wrong I had done. I was always the one at fault. “You cannot take Amber as your mate. As the Lycan King, I forbid it.” What?Amber’s POVWhat? What did he mean by forbidding Alpha Derrick from taking me as his mate? I had no idea what this was about or how to feel about it. And I guess Alpha Derrick felt the same way, because he immediately jumped to his feet. “What do you mean by I cannot mate Amber? She is a slave in my settlement, and as such, I have every right...”The words died in Alpha Derrick’s mouth when the Lycan King also stood to his feet. His power and aura dominating the room, even Alpha Derrick deflated under its weight. My chest tightened, and I could hardly breathe. I felt like a mouse trapped in the middle of two elephants. It was not a good feeling. “From what I recall, Alpha Derrick, you have a true mate. Do you not? What was her name again?” The Lycan King made an exaggerated gesture of scratching his stubble. “Celia, was it? If you mated Amber, what would she be? Will you break your bond with Celia?”For the first time in my life, I saw Alpha Derrick stumble with his words. “I...” h
Amber’s POV The pack members provide for her, of course, but she always emphasizes that she does not need much.” Lydia inputted in an attempt to salvage things, but there was not any need for that. Alpha Dale was already getting a clear picture of what they were painting. “Is everything okay?” I stiffened when I heard the voice. Focusing my attention on the people in the room, I had not noticed when Celia came in; neither had I noticed that it was time for Alpha Derrick’s morning tea.She balanced the tray in her hand on Alpha Derrick’s desk before turning to glare at me. “Why are you here, slave, when it is clear that the Lycan king is in a meeting with my MATE? Should you be here? Do you not know your place? ”My body tensed up, and I lowered my head even more. I opened my mouth to apologize, but Alpha Dale beat me to it.“You don’t speak to her like that!” he said with a glare. His voice was strong and confident, and it rang across the room, demanding everyone’s attention
Dale’s POV I snapped my head up. He was mentioning that word again, but for some reason, I could not bring myself to ask him anything about it. Like before, his finger went under my chin, and he pushed my face up till I was staring into his pool of blue eyes. “Tell me, are you okay? ”I nodded. “Yes,” I added almost immediately. “I am fine.”His arm around my waist tightened. It took every shred of strength within me to keep my face straight and a scream from escaping my throat. A knock sounded on the door, and an auburn-haired lady waltzed in.I breathed a sigh of relief when his arm around me relaxed and he stepped away. I lowered my head again, digging my nails into my skin to keep myself from feeling the biting pain in my side. “This is Gwen, the omega I told you about. She will help you with settling in. If there is anything you need and I am not available, let her know. She will make sure you get it.” He turned to the lady who had just arrived, nodding curtly at her. “Gwen.
Dale’s POV Amber’s body was a map of wounds, bruises, and scars. The horrified expression on Janine’s face confirmed just how bad I thought it was. The scars did not look like they had been treated by a professional, and so they did not heal correctly. I glanced at Janine, whose eyes were settled on me. She knew I was struggling to hold my wolf together, and I could see her readying herself to hold me back if it came to it. “Who did this to you?” I growled, unable to keep the pain my wolf felt out of my voice. “Tell me who did this to you!”‘And let me tear them apart, limb by limb.’ my wolf added. Amber fumbled with her dress, pulling it tightly against her lean frame. She was looking everywhere but at me and Janine. Even Janine looked short of words, and I did not blame her. Neither of us had seen something so terrible before. “Amber!” I demanded. “Speak, or I will pry the words from you myself. Was it Derrick? Lydia? Who exactly did this to you?My fist came down hard, st
Amber’s POV Although he said we now shared a room, Alpha Dale did not return to the room that night, nor did I see him at the dining area the next day after that. For three long days—unlike me—I was left to wonder where he was and what he might be doing. If he was okay or if he needed something. Janine checked on me from time to time, and we were becoming fast friends. I don’t know if that was the word to use, but she did seem to me like a decent and genuinely honest person that I was beginning to take a liking to. “Do you believe him?” I started slowly watching Janine for a reaction. We were in her office at the infirmary, and as always, Janine was busy sorting out her stuff. She glanced up at me, her brows knotting as she tried to make sense of my question. “What do you mean? Believe who?” “Alpha Dale.” I answered, careful to keep my eyes lowered and avoid eye contact now that she was looking directly at me. “He thinks I have a wolf.” Janine smiled. “He doesn’t ‘think’ you hav
Amber’s POV “There was no one there! “”What?”“ Alpha Derrick is gone!” he repeated. He combed his unruly hair back and paced to the window. “He gave up the Alpha title and left, just like that.”I opened my mouth to speak when he glanced at me. “Why? Why would he leave just like that and at a time like this? ”My eyes dropped to the ground. First of all, I was relieved that he was fine, and for some reason, I wanted to keep him with me forever. Secondly, Alpha Derrick gave up his Alpha title and was gone. “Your return to the moonstone pack?” I shook my head, confused as to why he would do that. “Do you have any idea why he would leave? Did you ever hear anything?” he gestured to me. “Celia and Lydia are gone as well. I’m surprised that I heard nothing of this until I arrived there myself. ”I shook my head, closing my eyes to clear out my thoughts. Where would he go and why? “Amber!” Alpha Dale’s cold fingers slipped under my chin, lifting my face up. Slowly, I opened my ey
Dale’s POV My fingers paused over her stomach, and she held her breath. Amber was beautiful. Despite the fact that she was malnourished and her skin was broken to the point that it was almost beyond repair, one could still see the beauty in her. Once she filled out, she was going to be one of the most beautiful women I ever met, and that was a fact. “Breathe, Amber, I whispered. “Breathe.”I could hear her heart as it hammered against the cages of her ribs, and I could almost feel the tears as they rolled down her face. Gently, I wiped it away. Her eyes flashed open, locking onto mine before she lowered them again.I felt the aching need to reach under her chin and tilt her head up till I was looking into those golden irises, but I held myself back; for some reason, she was in pain, and I could tell that it was not from her injuries. ‘Mate,’ my wolf growled. ‘Mate.’I paused, wondering why he was sensing the mate bond. It was supposed to be impossible to feel our bond considering
Dale’s POV The moon priestess was right. Skin-to-skin contact did help Amber’s wolf to deal with the mate bond, and in no time, the pain was almost gone, and she was sleeping like a baby in my arms. Janine had helped as well, stuffing Amber up with different kinds of concoctions that it was hard to tell what worked in the end. “How long has her wolf been bound like this?” The priestess asked, pulling me from my daze. I glanced at Amber—she looked beautiful when she slept—and wondered why someone would do this to her. The fact that her wolf could be quite strong could not be the only reason.I shrugged. “I’m guessing since she met her wolf.” It did look like it had been going on for a long time. Amber had no clue she had a wolf when I met her. “Or before that. She used to believe she was wolf-less.” Maybe she still did. “Then it is a good thing you found her. If her wolf isn’t bound before the next culling, she might die. I can only imagine what pain she has been going through
Trent’s POV (Bonus Chapter) Dale was losing his mind, and it was all the witch’s fault. And maybe Amber’s. But I couldn’t bring myself to fault her for anything given everything she’s been through. I never could have managed being apart from my wolf my entire life, thinking I never had one, and when I‘m finally told I have one, I have no access to it. She’s been through far worse than all of us in this room combined, and that was without counting all the memories she didn’t have. Besides, she wasn’t the one filling Dale’s head with ideas like sacrificing himself. That was all the witch, whom I still couldn’t bring myself to trust. Not after Gregg. The thought of him put a sour taste in my mouth. I glanced at the witch from the corner of my eye. From her aura and the way she carried herself—poised, confident, and stupidly proud for someone with her background—one could tell she was powerful. And with all that power, she still allowed herself to be used by Derrick? How was that
Dale’s POV ‘You should have marked her!’ My wolf was furious and had every right to be. I had regained control at the last minute, preventing what I supposed was going to be a disaster. I glanced at Amber sleeping peacefully beside me for a minute, and a part of me was thankful I had resisted the urge to sink my teeth into that succulent skin on her neck, placing my claim on her. Even now, after the whole intimacy was over, there was still that underlying fear that the worst moment was not here. I knew I should have held back—the last two times we had kissed, it always ended badly. And now, we even went as far as… I shook my head. Maybe I was overthinking things. It’s been hours, and nothing has happened—yet. Just as the thought slipped through my mind, Amber’s body tensed beside me. I felt the shift in the air before I saw her body move. I was up on my feet before I took my next breath. Her breathing became uneven, and her lips parted as if she was struggling to pull air into h
Dale’s POV Everything faded away. The voices, the music, the stares, and the murmurs. Nothing registered in my brain. All that existed was Amber and the thunderous pounding of my heartbeat. She was breathtaking. Literally. The red gown clung to her body like paint, swishing when she began to walk slowly towards me. My wolf growled, eager to sink our fangs into her neck and claim her. Mine. That was what everyone needed to know. She glowed like the sun, but it was her scent—the sweet smell of honey, moonflowers, and cinnamon—that shattered the last of my restraints. I reached for her without thinking, one hand gripping her waist and pulling her into my body and the other, tilting her chin up so I could look into those eyes. Amber. Beautiful, just like her name. Everything about her was so perfect it drove me crazy. The way her body was a perfect fit in mine, the way her lips parted slightly as if she was breathless, the way her eyes flickered between a glowing gold and warm
Dale’s POV I shouldn’t have kissed her. The last time I had realized that too late was when she was bleeding from injuries that were supposed to be healing. This time, I had almost made the same mistake again—or was it not a mistake? Maybe it was the fact that I could feel our bond growing stronger with each day that passed. That I felt it pulling me closer to her the harder I fought, even now, all I wanted to do was turn back and run into her arms, but it was too late for that. I had fled out of there like I was running from her, and it wasn’t the first time. I exhaled sharply, forcing the memory of her from my mind as I walked into my office, where Beta Trent was already waiting. His brow shot to his hairline as he watched me, pursing his lips in a comic attempt to hold back the words, which I could see dancing from the edge of his tongue. “You look like hell.” He said finally. “Are you doing alright?” “I’m fine,” I lied. “How are preparations going?” “Security is in place,
Amber’s POV By the time we were tying off the last banner, the smell of meat was thick in the air. Why the hell did someone decide it was okay for the event hall to be this close to the kitchen? My stomach rumbled, reminding me of how long it's been since breakfast. I clapped the dust off my hands, barely listening as Janine thanked the boys and motioned us to the door. We had worked all afternoon—skipping through lunch—busying ourselves with last-minute preparations. Tomorrow’s blood moon was going to be a blast, and I was kind of happy with the work I’d done. Back at Moonstone, I’d have been scurrying around, struggling to finish tasks that I’d never get a thank you for. Maybe a punishment or two. Events and celebrations were always things I dreaded. Maybe it was time that changed too. “Finally, we can eat.” Janine laughed. “Goddess, the food smells so good.”She closed her eyes, inhaling a lungful of the scented air before opening them again. I was so engrossed with watc
Amber’s POV The room Janine brought us to was large. No matter how much I stretched my eyes, I couldn’t see the other end of the room. That could be because of the fact that the room was packed with people doing decorations and now, we were about to be one of them. Janine marched ahead of us, her arms filled with fabrics, lines and what nots which she threw unceremoniously on one of the table before turning to Yeti and me. “Alright, girls,” she said, clapping her hands together. “Let’s get to work. ”Yeti and I exchanged glances before glancing at the towering pile of fabric and garland we were supposed to be helping with. I sighed dramatically, shuffling forward lazily. “So…” I picked up a roll of ribbon and turned to Janine. “Is there a plan? I get we are supposed to finish putting all these up before morning? ”Janine scoffed. “There’s always a plan. I have a plan. And you both are only here to follow orders.” “Seems fair, although I feel like I’ve been tricked.” I glanced at
Amber’s POV Ink smudged beneath my fingertips, bleeding into white paper. I inhaled sharply, dragging my sleeve over the mess, but it only made it worse. I thought I could practice my writing to get rid of the boredom I felt, but my crooked and jagged letters only mocked me. Sighing, I tore off the page, crumbling it into a ball, and tried to throw it into the wastebasket that sat way too far—not far enough—from my bed. But just like my fifty-something failed attempts, this one stopped short of the basket, rolling on the ground next to its friends. I sighed, shutting the book with a thud. Even from here, I could hear the commotion of activities going on outside. Everyone was busy doing something—except me, of course. If this was the Moonstone pack. I was sure no one would have cut me any slack, no matter how sick I was. I closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose as something stirred inside me. Hopefully, it wasn’t what I was thinking it was. The priestess had assured
Dale’s POV “It has to be a willing sacrifice.” One that the witch did not look willing to make. I mean, who in their right senses would give their life up for another? Even I could not ask her to do that. Amber’s life was important, and so was the life of others. I was beginning to understand why Derrick held onto Yeti even though she was useless to him—he intended to use her to threaten her mother when it came to this. ‘You can make her as well,’ my wolf pressed. ‘You’re Lycan King, and this is Amber we are talking about. Our mate. ’I clenched my jaw, forcing myself to breathe through the haze of emotions that pressed down on me. ‘I can’t make her give up her life for Amber if she’s not willing to do it. Did you not hear the part where she said, ‘a willing sacrifice?’ I shot back. ‘You have her daughter. You can use that to make her… more willing.’I tried not to roll my eyes. ‘I’m not Derrick.’ I answered simply, pushing him deeper so he could keep his thoughts to hims
Dale’s POV “It was Mallory.” What?! I could hardly react, hardly breathe as the words slammed into me. Unconsciously, I turned to my brother Eric, reading the horror and disbelief that appeared on his face as the words sank in. It couldn’t really be…“Are you sure about… Amber? You may have—” Amber shook her head. “I’m sure, Alpha Dale. It was her. She…” Her eyes darted to where Eric stood, and she hesitated. “She did what, Amber?” I prompted. “She planned this whole thing with Emily.” Her body trembled, probably as she relived the memories of that place. I clenched my fist—for a second, I felt everything at once. I wanted to scream and, at the same time, break something—preferably, Mallory’s nose. “Who the hell is Emily?” Trent asked, beating me to it. “The woman who lured me from here.” Amber answered, lowering her head. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have gone…” Janine shuffled closer to her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder to comfort her. I turned around to give orders to
