Ethan

We moved toward the grand entrance of the venue, and my jaw nearly dropped at the sight of the place. The towering golden gates framed by ivy, the soft glow of fairy lights hanging from the trees, and the sound of a distant string quartet—it all screamed elegance. Inside, I could already see well-dressed guests milling around, glasses of champagne in hand.

I swallowed hard, feeling my stomach churn. My nerves were shot. My hands felt clammy, my heart raced, and I had the sudden, irrational urge to turn and run.

God, I was so nervous I felt like peeing and pooping at the same time. My stomach hurt so bad I thought I might actually keel over.

Riley, walking confidently beside me, must have noticed my panic because he reached over and grabbed my hand in his own. His grip was firm, warm, and grounding. I turned to look at him, wide-eyed, like a deer caught in headlights.

“Breathe,” he said softly, his voice steady. “You’ve got this.”

His words, paired with the gentle pressure of his hand, steadied me—just a little. I forced a smile despite the nervous tremble in my chest, remembering the plan. I was here to show Liam what he’d lost, not to melt into a puddle of stress on the marble floor.

As we approached the entrance, two bodyguards in perfectly tailored suits stepped forward, their stoic expressions making my stomach flip again.

“Invitation, please,” one of them said in a voice as flat as the stone pillars around us.

Right. The invitation. I nodded confidently and reached into my pocket, only to feel… nothing.

Oh no.

I patted my other pocket. Still nothing.

Panic started to set in. I checked my jacket pockets. Nothing there either.

Then it hit me.

The invitation. I’d left it on the couch when Luna, my cat, had jumped onto my lap demanding attention. My stomach dropped.

Riley’s calm demeanor faltered as he noticed my frantic movements. His questioning gaze bored into me, and I could almost hear the unspoken *What’s going on?*

I leaned in close, my voice barely above a whisper. “I forgot the invitation.”

His eyebrows shot up. “You *what?*”

“I forgot it,” I hissed, trying to keep my voice down so the guards wouldn’t hear. “It’s on the couch. At home. With Luna.”

Riley blinked, his expression shifting between disbelief and amusement. “You’re telling me we’re standing in front of the fanciest party in town, and you don’t have the invitation?”

I nodded, my face heating. “Pretty much, yeah.”

The guard cleared his throat, clearly growing impatient. “Sir, the invitation?”

I opened my mouth, fumbling for some kind of excuse, when Riley’s hand tightened around mine.

“Don’t worry,” he murmured, leaning closer. “I’ve got this.”

Before I could ask what he meant, Riley turned to the guards, his expression shifting into something entirely different. The easygoing neighbor I knew was gone. In his place stood a man exuding pure confidence, his posture relaxed but authoritative.

“My apologies,” he said smoothly, pulling something from his wallet. “I believe there’s been a mix-up, but here’s my identification. We’re on the guest list under Ethan Donovan.”

The guards exchanged a look before one of them checked a clipboard. I held my breath, watching Riley with a mix of awe and confusion.

“There you are, Mr. Donovan,” the guard said after a moment, stepping aside. “Enjoy the evening.”

I stared at Riley as we walked inside, my heart pounding in relief. “How did you…?”

He shrugged, slipping his wallet back into his pocket. “Let’s just say I’ve gotten good at thinking on my feet. Now, focus. We’re here for you, remember?”

As we stepped into the grand hall, the sheer opulence of the place hit me like a wave. The marble floors gleamed under crystal chandeliers, and every corner seemed to sparkle with gold accents. Guests moved in elegant clusters, their laughter blending with the music from a live orchestra.

I straightened my back, trying to channel some of Riley’s confidence.

“Deep breaths,” Riley said, his hand brushing my arm lightly. “You’re not here to blend in. You’re here to stand out.”

I nodded, gripping his hand tighter as we moved deeper into the crowd. Somewhere in this sea of sophistication was Liam, and I was determined to show him that I wasn’t the same heartbroken guy he’d left behind.

As we entered the luxurious room even more, my anxiety surged again. The space was even more extravagant than I’d imagined. The high ceilings were adorned with cascading crystal chandeliers, their soft golden light glinting off the polished marble floors. Each table was draped in rich velvet cloth, and the floral arrangements—white roses and orchids—were almost too perfect to be real.

Riley, ever the cool presence, nudged me lightly. “Relax. You’re not walking into battle.”

“Feels like I am,” I muttered.

We made our way to the check-in table tucked in a corner of the grand room. The attendant, a sharply dressed woman with an air of polite disinterest, glanced up at us.

“Name?”

“Ethan Donovan,” Riley said smoothly, before I could even open my mouth. His confidence was startling, and it earned a small, impressed glance from the woman as she scanned the guest list.

“Ah, table three,” she said, gesturing toward a cluster of elegantly arranged tables near the front of the room.

I glanced at Riley nervously as we walked over. “Table three? That sounds... prominent.”

Riley smirked. “You wanted to make a statement, didn’t you?”

“Not like this,” I hissed, but it was too late.

We reached table three, and my stomach dropped. Of course. It was the table right in front of the married couple, as if Liam had planned it to ensure I had the best view of his new life. I could imagine him, seated there, at the head of the room beside his new spouse, laughing and glowing with happiness. I could feel the disgust bubbling inside me.

I leaned closer to Riley, my voice low and bitter. “This is exactly the kind of petty move Liam would pull. He wants me to sit here and watch him play the perfect husband.”

Riley put a calming hand on my shoulder and squeezed gently. “Don’t let him get to you. That’s what he wants. Sit down, breathe, and remember—we’re here to show him what he’s missing.”

I gritted my teeth but nodded, following Riley’s lead as he pulled out a chair for me. I sat stiffly, trying to ignore the heat rising in my face. Riley took the seat beside me, his movements calm and deliberate.

Once we were seated, Riley’s hand found mine under the table. His fingers curled around mine, and he began to caress the back of my hand with his thumb.

I turned to him, wide-eyed. “What are you doing?” I whispered.

He grinned, leaning closer. “Selling the illusion, obviously.” His voice dropped into a low, seductive tone. “You’re my *boyfriend*, remember?”

I almost laughed at how much he was enjoying this, but I bit it back, shaking my head. “You’re unbelievable.”

“Unbelievably convincing,” he corrected, winking at me.

I couldn’t help it—I snorted, quickly covering my mouth to stifle the sound. Riley chuckled softly, then leaned back and started spinning one of his ridiculous stories.

“So there I was,” he began, “stranded in the middle of a forest at midnight, no cell service, nothing but a flashlight and a protein bar.”

I gave him a skeptical look. “What were you even doing in the forest?”

“Photography gig,” he said nonchalantly. “I was trying to capture some rare nocturnal animals. Turns out, they don’t appreciate being photographed without consent.”

“Rare nocturnal animals?” I asked, arching an eyebrow.

“Okay, fine, it was a raccoon,” he admitted. “But it was *a very angry raccoon.*”

I couldn’t help but laugh, and he grinned triumphantly. “See? I knew I could get you to smile.”

“Barely,” I teased, shaking my head. “Your stories are ridiculous.”

“But effective,” he said with a smirk.

We were just starting to relax when I heard a voice call my name.

“Ethan?”

The sound sent a chill down my spine. I turned toward the source, and my heart sank.

Standing there, with a smug look plastered across his face, was Jonathan—my insufferable coworker and rival.

17EthanThe night felt heavier with every passing minute. Despite the laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the casual chatter, my mind was a whirlwind of frustration, confusion, and regret. Riley seemed to notice me withdrawing, but he never stopped being his usual, easygoing self, turning the mood lighter whenever I seemed close to spiraling.“You alright, man?” Riley’s voice broke through the fog of my thoughts. He leaned in, his voice dropping low enough that only I could hear.“Yeah,” I replied, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes. “Just… thinking.”“Don’t let it eat you up,” he said, his tone far too wise for someone my age. “You’ve got two choices, Ethan: You can let this night swallow you, or you can own it. You decide.”I swallowed, looking at him for a moment. “How do you always know the right thing to say?”Riley shrugged, grinning. “It’s a gift. Plus, I’ve had a lot of practice pretending to know what I’m doing.”I laughed. Really laughed. For the first time t

18Ethan The moment the MC announced "Table 3," my heart sank, and my face burned. I darted a glance at Riley, hoping for some miraculous intervention. Instead, he grinned, exuding the kind of confidence that could make the world pause, he was already grinning like a man who lived for chaos. His tousled dark hair, sharp jawline, and piercing eyes seemed to command the attention of every guest in the room. “Looks like we’re up,” Riley said, nudging my arm. “Come on, it’ll be fun.” “Define *fun,*” I muttered, my voice laced with dread. “Humiliating Liam and Owen in front of a crowd counts as fun, doesn’t it?” His smirk widened. “Besides, you said you weren’t giving him the satisfaction. What better way than this?” I groaned, but the way Riley casually adjusted his cufflinks—drawing audible gasps from a group nearby—left me no choice but to follow him. As we made our way to the dance floor, the murmurs grew louder. “God, look at him,” I overheard someone whisper. “He’s so elegant…

19EthanRiley settled back into his seat, looking far too pleased with himself. I placed the bouquet on the table, glaring at him. “You’re enjoying this way too much.” He grinned. “Of course. You have to admit, it’s been entertaining.” I couldn’t argue with that. The mix of emotions on Liam’s face alone had been worth it. Speaking of Liam and Owen, they had both vanished shortly after Riley’s dramatic bouquet catch. “Where do you think they went?” I asked, glancing at their empty chairs. “Probably to sulk or scheme,” Riley said, leaning back in his chair and taking a sip of wine. “Though I wouldn’t put it past them to come back with some sort of ridiculous plan for revenge.” I chuckled at the thought. “Knowing them, that sounds about right.” Moments later, the lights dimmed slightly, and a spotlight illuminated the middle of the room. The MC’s voice boomed again. “Ladies and gentlemen, the moment we’ve all been waiting for—the arrival of the wedding cake!” The crowd erupte

20EthanThe music in the ballroom was lively, the kind of melody that made your toes tap even when you weren’t paying attention. Riley turned to me, his smirk softer now, less playful, more genuine. He held out a hand, his gaze steady. “Dance with me,” he said, his voice low but filled with a kind of confidence that made it impossible to say no.I raised an eyebrow, pretending to hesitate, but I couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at my lips. “You’re asking me to dance? Here? In front of everyone?”“Why not?” he asked, his grin widening. “Let’s give them something to talk about.”With a dramatic sigh, I placed my hand in his. He led me to the dance floor, weaving through the crowd with a natural ease that made me realize just how comfortable he was in his own skin. The moment we stepped onto the polished wood floor, he pulled me close, one hand resting lightly on my waist, the other holding mine securely. The music shifted to a slower tempo, and as we began to sway, I couldn’t

21RileyThe lively buzz of the ballroom had dulled into background noise as I swayed with Ethan just moments ago. Now, leaning casually against the bar, I scanned the crowd, my senses still attuned to the game we were playing tonight. I knew our little performance had its risks, especially with people like Jonathan lurking around. Jonathan—Ethan’s insufferable coworker. The man practically reeked of opportunism, and I’d bet my best leather jacket that he’d sniffed out this chance to cause trouble the moment Ethan left for the restroom. Sure enough, I caught his beady little eyes scanning the room before landing on me. Here we go. He approached, a smug smirk plastered on his face. “Riley, right?” I turned to face him fully, flashing my most polite smile—the kind that didn’t reach my eyes. “That’s me. And you’re Jonathan, correct? Ethan’s coworker?” Jonathan’s smirk deepened as he extended a hand. I shook it briefly, resisting the urge to wipe my palm on my pants afterward. Hi

22RileyEthan stiffened at first, his hands hovering awkwardly before settling on my waist. His touch was tentative, as if he were unsure of himself. “You’re surprisingly good at this fake boyfriend thing,” he murmured, his tone light but carrying an undertone of something deeper, heavier. I smirked, trying to keep my emotions in check despite the growing tension between us. “What can I say? I’m a natural. Besides, someone had to save you from Jonathan’s smarmy little mind games.” Ethan chuckled, the sound low and warm, but I could sense the tension still coiled in his body. His grip tightened just slightly, his protectiveness slipping through. “What happened with him? Did he try to approach you?” “Oh, he tried,” I said with a roll of my eyes, my voice laced with irritation. “But don’t worry, I handled him. He spent more time tripping over his own words than actually getting under my skin.” Ethan’s jaw tensed, his expression darkening. “That guy,” he muttered, his frustration

23EthanI watched Riley's every move with a mix of curiosity and unease. His sudden departure from my arms left me standing alone on the dance floor, his absence like an echo I couldn’t ignore. He moved toward the MC with deliberate strides, his posture confident and his intentions completely veiled as a magician’s trick.“What the hell is he up to now?” I muttered under my breath, my eyes glued to him as he leaned in to whisper something to the MC. The man’s brow furrowed at first, clearly taken aback by whatever Riley had said. But then Riley smiled—a mischievous, almost devilish grin that had me gripping the edge of my glass tighter. He said something else, his tone light but insistent, and, to my utter confusion, the MC’s cheeks flushed. He actually *blushed* before nodding and breaking into a grin himself. What on earth did Riley say to make the MC blush?“What is he saying to him?” a voice murmured beside me. I turned slightly to see a woman in a sequined dress, her eyes al

24EthanThe moment Riley stepped away, leaving me clutching the bouquet, I felt the weight of countless eyes on me. My skin prickled under the scrutiny, and the crowd buzzed with whispers, their gazes bouncing between Riley and me as if we were the stars of some twisted rom-com. I should have been furious. *I was* furious—at Riley, at this ridiculous situation, and most of all, at myself for letting it spiral so far. Then I caught sight of Liam once again. He was standing near the bar, his jaw clenched so tightly it seemed his teeth might shatter. His face was a mask of barely contained rage, and beside him stood Owen, clearly trying to calm him down. But Liam didn’t notice; his entire focus was locked on me. Good. For a split second, satisfaction rippled through me. Liam deserved this—to feel helpless, to be on the outside looking in. Still, the way he stormed toward Owen, dragging him roughly by the arm, sent a jolt of unease through me. “What’s he up to now?” I muttered und

Chapter 7: Memories in FocusRiley’s POVI parked my beaten-down car in the lot outside the studio, killing the engine with a sigh of relief. The sun had risen fully now, the sky painted in soft shades of gold and blue. It was one of those perfect mornings—too perfect for the dark thoughts still lingering at the edge of my mind.“Focus, Riley,” I muttered as I grabbed my camera bag and stepped out, the early city hum filling the air. Work was my escape, the only thing that made sense when nothing else did.The studio was quiet when I walked in, the faint smell of coffee and printer ink lingering in the air. I waved to Marcy, the front desk assistant, who gave me her usual bright smile.“Morning, Riley! Big day ahead?”“Just another day in paradise,” I replied, forcing a smirk.“Don’t forget there’s coffee in the break room,” she added with a wink. “You look like you need it.”I nodded in thanks and headed to my small workspace in the back. The room was cozy, cluttered with camera lens
