Chapter 34

Veronica’s POV

I was alone with my thoughts and the growing dread that twisted in my gut. The dim light flickered, making the small room feel like I would never get out of this horrible place. Trying to steady my breathing as the cold of the concrete floor seeped deeper into my skin. I tried to stay calm but the terror of what might come next was overwhelming.

Minutes turned into hours, each second increasing my fear. Just as I was starting to think that nothing else would happen that day, that I was given a chance to gather my strength, I heard footsteps again. These were different, heavier, and filled with dark intent that made my heart race even faster.

The sound of the door opening sent chills down my spine once again. I caught the sight of Marcus. His eyes locked with mine, but this gaze was something else. It made me feel like I was some sort of prey that he was hunting. His lips curved into that same twisted grin I had seen before. He closed the door behind him, then he locked
