Katrina’s POV
Groaning, I stretched my bones and turned around as I slowly stirred from my deep slumber. I felt a light breeze brush my skin and frowned in wonder at the sensation.
The sound of leaves rustling as I moved about also got my attention, causing my brows to furrow in thought as I scanned my brain for an explanation to the sounds and feeling.
Coming up with nothing, I did a final stretch, something like sand falling on my face at the action. Curiosity got the better of me and I unraveled my lids, instantly shutting them as I caught a glimpse of my surrounding.
“Oh heavens,” I muttered in horror, the color draining from my face and my heart racing as it all came back.
Abruptly, I opened my eyes for the second time and stared beside me. Not at all surprised but at the same feeling a sense of stupidity wash over me as I observed it to be empty.
Planting my palms on the dry leaves and moist earth beneath me, I moved my body to a sitting position as I slowly came to an understanding that I was doomed.
Not wanting to think the worst yet, I angled my head upward and sniffed the air like a dog or should I say a wolf that I was even though I my wolf was no longer inactive.
I turned left and right in an attempt to catch a whiff of him, the man in whose arms I had found cornfort and had my desires satisfied the previous night. The man whom for the first time in a long time had made me feel wanted and cherished.
However as the seconds went by and not even the faintest of the scent I caught on him at night was sniffed, I realized that once again, I had been I allowed a man to make a fool out of me.
Embarrassment flooded my being together with a slashing pain in my chest that caused the corners of my blue eyes to sting with the appearance of tears as I folded my body in a foetal position.
As if to mock me, my gaze found the small satchel I had managed to carry. It was just the same as I had left it the night when Amanda stormed into my room and nearly made me meet the moon goddess by strangling me to death.
Something I wished had happened because I needed to have a word with the celestial being who claimed to protect and watch over us but instead only watched over me but not protecting me from the evil I witnessed while surrounded with vile and heartless beings.
The duffel bag stared back at me as I did it, reminding me of my second failed attempt at escape. This time I had no one to blame as none of my captors had caught up with me blocked my path to freedom.
Instead I ended up being my own obstacle to the life I wanted by foolishly giving into my desires all because of an attraction to a strange man whom I had no idea who he was.
Even if I tried to rack my brain for what he looked like, I happened to come up short. The only thing I could recall was his muscular build and the feel of his black long hair as I ran my fingers and clenched it during our period of lust and giving in to the attraction.
Disgust took over as the images flashed through my mind’s eye of how I allowed myself to be utterly fucked in a place like the woods. Imagine if someone had walked in on us or maybe watched us from a distance.
The thought of it caused a shiver to run down my spine and I shook my head as if to rid it off the images and if possible rewind the time and correct my messed up actions.
I suddenly felt a chill different from the disgust and gazed upward to see the sky grey peek at me from above the branches and leaves of the trees swaying in the breeze.
The time of day wasn't certain, nonetheless I figured it would be sometime in the early afternoon. It was a miracle no one had located me yet and I prayed it stayed that way.
Forcing myself to push the thoughts of fear and grief to the side, I got to a standing position. Cautious of my nakedness, I scanned my surroundings in search of my clothes.
Thankfully it took barely a minute to locate them and quickly took steps in its direction. I picked up the worn out brown dress which had some cuts at the ends due to overuse and lots of stains.
I flipped the dress in the air to discard any leaves or sand hanging on it and held it apart to step into it. I pulled it up and just as I was about to tug it the rest of the way a presence and voice I detested was made known. “Katrina.”
My whole body went rigid and the dress fell out of my hands, causing the material to drop to my waist, leaving my upper body bare and visible to his sight.
Shaun the malicious bastard approached, his amber colored eyes raking my form as his body exuded arrogance. A rush of the fear I had pushed to the back of my mind overwhelmed me as my knees shook and my throat went try.
‘Somebody help me,’ I muttered the prayer in my head as I spurred my body into action. Adrenaline kicking, I hurriedly dragged my dress upward on my body and slid my hands into the sleeves, counting the seconds till he reached me.
In those seconds, my blue eyes checked my surroundings for a possible escape route. The only solution was to turn around and run and just as I did a fast twirl and put one foot in front of the other, a large hand gripped my shoulder stopping me.
“Where do you think you are going Katrina?” His angry voice growled out in question and I gulped, my whole body quivering in dread at my situation as he asked. “And what’s this scent on you?”
Katrina’s POV“What?” I questioned, feigning ignorance as I did a turn to face his form. His formidable face in a scowl as he stood in a black shirt and jeans, his body too close that I felt uncomfortable and scared as always.“Don’t play smart with me Katrina,” he gritted, jaw clenched as he glared at me. “I asked you a question.”“Umm, I—” I started but he cut me off.“Don’t answer the first it's obvious you were trying to escape,” he pronounced and I stared at anywhere but his face. “But the second is very important and I need an answer fast.”Silence reigned between and around us except for the noise of our breathing and the rustling of the leaves and branches around. I opened my mouth but closed it again as fear wouldn't let me form a sentence.A ready lie was on my tongue but I couldn't speak up. As moments passed, his stare became sharper as his scowl grew deeper, his hold on me tightening.“Katrina,” he called warningly, rage flowing out of me in waves. A whimper left my lips
Katrina’s POVThe tips of my toes scraped on the ground as I was dragged limply down the stairs. I had no idea of the route to the dungeon moreover the foul stench in the air and the sound of grunts informed me we were close.“Open up,” He commanded as we came to a halt. “Yes Alpha,” whomever he spoke to responded and metals clicked in place, following after by a screeching noise.“Get in there,” Shaun growled and threw me in with much force that I landed on my knees, my palms scratched by the rough floor and face squeezed in disgust by the stronger foul scent which met my nostrils. “Lock the door Dean.”“Please Shaun,” I whirled around still on my hands and knees, not minding the dirt and whatever compost the mud was made of and faced him as he strolled in, a merciless expression on his facial features.“No amount of begging will save you from this Katrina,” he sneered, an evil look in his eyes as he crouched to my level while Dean the guard shut the iron barriers, locking it as he
CHAPTER 7Katrina’s POVThe torment and beating went on with Amanda’s mocking laughs and words and Shaun’s ruthless kicks and whips. At some point everything went blank as I lost consciousness.I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or dead but I suddenly saw a beacon of light approach me. Frowning and squinting my eyes, I sat up and watched it come closer.Luckily for me it didn't get too close thus I would have been blinded by it. It stopped and I observed it with interest, questions flying about in my head. ‘Be strong Katrina,’ a feminine voice echoed from the light, causing my frown to become deeper as I wondered what the hell was happening.‘Who are you?’ I questioned in a quiet tone, trying to peek behind the light as I wondered if the guard stationed at the door was sleeping or had left thus it seemed like I was the only one there with whatever the light was.‘Someone you’d come to thank,’ the voice said. ‘You have questions which would be answered in due time.’‘No, I want them answ
Katrina’s POVDays went by and my bruises just got a little bit better. No one cared about the state of my health as I was back doing errands and hard labor the next day.Being without a wolf made me totally different from others of my kind. At times it was bliss because there was no annoying voice in my head to tell me and issue me orders.Nonetheless at times when I felt too alone, I wished I heard the presence in my head to fill me in with some company. Also at times like these when I needed to heal fast, I wished she was with me because I was healing slowly like a human.Bending over, I finished wrapping the bandage around my knee for the second time in a few days. Having no one to help me out or care I learnt to do stuff for myself.Even Shaun who had the audacity to show up after what he did to sleep with me didn't even flinch at the bruises and bandaged knee and a swollen elbow on my body.I managed to kick him out of course and since then he hadn't visited. It had been a week
Katrina’s POVHer words stung but I let it slide and simply left to do her bid, picking up the bucket in my right hand which was gratefully in good condition. No matter how I tried to get rid of the hurt of his rejection or set my mind it wasn't my fault, someone or something ended up telling me otherwise and it always stung.Heaving a sigh I walked out of the pack house and began my trek across the pack lands. It was still morning and one could hear the voices of mother's and kids as they got them prepared for school and father's get ready for the day.The bloodmoon pack was not as developed as some others I had heard of, maybe it was because Shaun was a heartless and stupid Alpha. Sometimes I wonder what made me love him but the answer was always the damned matebond.I exchanged no greetings with anyone I came across and no one uttered a word to me either. I was the outcast of the pack who had caused the death of both parents at her birth. An hour went by and I approached a clearing
Days had flown by and I was back to being in hell. Amanda didn’t relent as she threw insults at me and tried to mock and hit me at any chance she got.As for Shaun, he happened to stay clear of me. He hadn't approached me personally since I chased him out of my room after he threw me in the dungeon. He even went through the trouble of avoiding eye contact.I was ecstatic about that fact as I needs a break from his madness. I just hope he doesn't return back to being stupid soon. I loved things the way they were.As for my health and recovery, it was going well and I was starting to heal. Vanessa had become a great help by volunteering to do the strenuous chores, therefore reducing the stress on me and giving my body time to recover. To my surprise Vanessa had proven to be totally different than what I had thought. She happened to be the friend I needed by standing by me as she was mentally stronger and more capabable in handling pressure unlike me who succumbed to it easily. When I as
Katrina’s POV“Hurry,” I said to Vannessa who was getting dressed while I stood beside her, already dressed. We were in my room. Vanessa was not given a place to stay when she was brought and the maids wouldn't want to get on Amanda’s bad side by accomading her in their quarters.I only found this out some days after we met. It was early in the morning and I was heading to run an early errand Amanda had indicated to me the previous day when I observed her sleeping beside my door. She didn't know it was my room by then. Feeling sympathetic and deciding to give her a chance, I let her sleep in with me after I warned her about its state. To my surprise she didn't act disgusted or flinched instead she was grateful and it was nice having company and someone to share the days events with.Vanessa loved to discuss and badmouth people a lot so sharing chats with her was always fun. Staying together made us bond more with each other and she got really comfortable with me.It was sometime in th
Katrina’s POVThe words flew past my ear as every other person in the room went still for a moment as the news settled in their system. Amanda inhaled a deep breath and nodded at the guard who exited after."You all heard the guard," she said in a loud tone. "Round up whatever it is you are doing and leave as soon as you can.""If you can't round up everything then pack up and leave," she issued out the command, clapping her hands rapidly for emphasis. The men whom I was about to work with began climbing down the ladder and packed up their equipments. I tried to help but they shook their heads no. They didn't appear familiar and I wondered where they were from and if they were humans, wolves or lycans.Another side effect of not having a wolf, I couldn't sense or figure out simple things like that. Except if I was told or if a situation came up that somehow revealed it to me."Katrina!" Amanda yelled my name all of a sudden and I jumped, wondering what the problem was this time."Yes
Katrina’s POVI stood in the middle of it all, my breath sharp, my fingers curled into fists. The shadows weren’t just around me anymore. They were inside me, whispering, creeping into the edges of my mind, trying to take root."You are no different from them."I flinched. The voice wasn’t a stranger’s. It was my.I turned—and came face to face with myself. She stood there, eyeing me with icy, dark eyes. She looked like me, but something was wrong. Her lips twisted in a nasty sneer, her stance relaxed, confident. But there was no kindness in her face. No warmth. Only something sharp and unyielding. The villainous version of me.She tilted her head. “Did you think you were the hero in this story?”I took a deep breath. “You’re not real.”She laughed. "Am I not?"More individuals appeared as the shadows behind her changed.Davos. Lucy.Their smiles were mocking, and their eyes were glowing red.I stepped back. "This isn't real."I smirked as the other me. "It's sufficient
Katrina's POVThe air was different.Colder. Heavier.I clenched my fingers into fists and inhaled slowly. I had been cautioned by the Elders that The Forgotten Realms was not a place for the weak. That I might not come out again after I got in. However, I didn't think twice. I was unable to.Shaun was standing next to me, nervous. "This is not necessary for you to do."I looked him in the eye. "Yes, I do."Mira spoke softly. "What if you don't return?"I made an effort to grin. "Then let my son know that I made an effort."She nodded and swallowed hard. The cloaks moved in the gloom as the Elders moved forward. One held out his hand. "Enter through the curtain."The air twisted and bent, and the area in front of me rippled. I could sense it, but it was like staring through water. a strong pull that pushes me ahead and pulls at my spirit.I inhaled. After that, I entered. In an instant, the world disappeared and the cold enveloped me.I was no longer in the mountains.I w
Katrina's POVDarkness. Cold. Silence. The might of the Elders has engulfed the world around me. My chest burned and my breathing was shallow and tight, but my body felt weightless, as if it were floating in an unending emptiness. Nothing was there for me to grasp when I reached out. Just the whispers, swirling like smoke around me."You are not ready."Soft and eerie, the words reverberated in my head, tinged with an unidentified substance. A caution. A pledge.Then—light.blinding. fierce.I gasped as I smacked against solid ground and the abyss broke. My muscles ached like if I had fallen from the sky, and my eyesight swam as I forced myself to stand. In an instant, Shaun was by my side, his hands on my arms. "Katrina?"I blinked vigorously as the final traces of the vision left my brain. "I'm here."Mira pushed herself up a few steps away and coughed. Her fingers were digging into the soil under her, and she appeared pale and scared. "What was that?"The Elders were in
Katrina’s POVBefore us, the mountains loomed, quiet, and unending. I ascended higher, each step heavier than the previous, the chilly air burning my lungs. Steep and twisting through dense forests and sharp rocks, the trail was designed to keep people out. Perhaps that was the idea.Shaun strolled next to me, his eyes keen, his shoulders stiff. This was not a place he trusted. I didn't either. With her arms around her body and her breath coming in short gasps, Mira followed. Since our departure, she had not spoken much. Her thoughts were elsewhere. her relatives. With each stride she took, the burden of their destiny continued to pound down on her shoulders.Above us, ominous clouds rolled in, laden with the threat of a storm. A caution. Through the woods, the wind howled and whispered mysteries that I couldn't comprehend.I drew my coat closer to me. "How far is it?"Shaun looked over the cliffs in front of him. "Not too far. whether the tales are accurate.Mira let ou
Katrina's POVThe shadows let go of Mira, and she gasped, her body twitching. Shaking and breathing in sharp, irregular breaths, she fell into my arms. I grounded her by holding her tightly with my fingers on her shoulders. The shadows had parted. However, I was aware. It remained. Not quite yet. A few feet away, Shaun stood with his muscles taut and his sword drawn. Suspicion burned beneath his eyes as they flitted between Mira and me. He still didn’t trust her. Maybe he never would. Mira’s voice was hoarse. “Katrina…” I pulled back slightly, scanning her face. "I'm present." Her eyes welled with tears. “I didn’t want to. I promise, I didn’t want to.” Shaun laughed. "What did you not want to do?" Mira winced. “Obey.” Quiet. The word hung between us, heavy, laden with significance I didn’t understand yet. Shaun gripped his sword tighter. "So you acknowledge it." Mira balled her hands into fists. "I had no other option." I took a deep breath. "Why?" Her voice cracked. "Be
Katrina’s POVMira stood frozen, her face pale, her breath unsteady. The blood on the ground hadn’t even dried, and yet the camp felt quieter than ever. All around us, the warriors watched and waited. They had no faith in her. Nor was I certain that I did.Beside me, Shaun was motionless, his hand clutching his sword's hilt. I could feel the anger leaving him even though he remained silent. In combat, Mira had served as my sister, friend, and second-in-command. Now, however, she was our only link to the enemy.I walked slowly in her direction. "Be honest with me."Mira winced. "Katrina, I—""Now," I said, sounding sharper than I meant to.Her mouth quivered. She looked around, at Shaun, at the warriors, at the dead body between us. Then her eyes met mine, full of something I couldn’t name. Fear? Guilt? Desperation?“I don’t know what’s happening to me,” she whispered.Shaun laughed. "That is insufficient."Mira’s hands curled into fists. “You think I did this?”I inhal
Traitor's ShadowWith her dagger in her fingers, Mira stood motionless and silent. My intellect was yelling at me to make sense of everything as my stomach twisted. My pal Mira. Second in command of me. The person who had battled next to me was bleeding next to me. She refused to turn on me. She refused. The deserted prisoner tents, however, conveyed a different message. The warriors who went missing. The food was stolen. the plans that were leaked. The soldiers of Crimson Alpha were aware of everything we did. The solution was now directly in front of me. Shaun took a step forward, tensed. "Tell me that this isn't true." Mira gripped her dagger more tightly. She remained still. didn't flinch. I took a deep breath. "Mira. Speak up. Her gaze wavered. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Shaun snarled. "She doesn't have to express herself." He grabbed his sword. He was blocked by me. "No." His tone was piercing. "Katrina—" "No." My heart was racing. Gazing into Mira's eye
Katrina's POVIt was a different camp. Uncomfortable. False. Something was wrong, as the scouts patrolled, the warriors exercised, and the weapons were sharpened. People's movements, the way whispers spread, and the way eyes flashed too fast as I passed all gave me a sense of it. Something was going on. Something negative.Mira approached me with a thin line of her lips pressing on mine. "The food is gone."I scowled. "What?"She folded her arms. This morning, we conducted an inventory. Our supplies are missing. Many of them.My stomach turned over. "Would it have been an error?"She gave a headshake. "No. They were taken by someone.I let out a breath and looked around the camp. The soldiers were more tense than normal. It was more than just the cuisine. There was more. I sensed it.Shaun approached with a somber expression. "There's another issue."I looked him in the eye. "Now what?"After a moment of hesitation, he lowered his voice. "The battle plans were lea
Katrina's POVSilently, we strolled. My flesh was burning, even though the night air was cool. Everything else was drowned out by my thoughts, which were too loud. It was the Crimson Alpha. He was still alive. He desired authority. He desired to be in charge. I had to decide what to do about it immediately. With his fists clenched and his jaw taut, Shaun strolled next to me. Mira kept looking back to see if anyone was pursuing us. I didn't anticipate him pursuing us. He didn't have to. He had offered. He was waiting now.At last, Shaun said something. "We cannot rely on him."I gave a nod. "I understand."Mira let out a sigh. "Can we fight him, though?"Quiet.Shaun let out a loud sigh. "We must."That was what I wanted to think. Yes, I did. But I had witnessed his strength. I sensed it. The way the earth shook at his mere presence, the way the air hunched around him. He wasn't your average Alpha. He was unique.Mira spoke softly. "What if he is correct?"I fel
