ONE YEAR BEFORE
It was the week before Tara’s birthday, and even though she wasn’t quite at the official mating age yet, she was still totally excited about the event. Tara would be turning 20, and as always, it was a chance for the three of us to celebrate together. We spent nearly every moment of that week planning her birthday. It wasn’t going to be anything fancy, just a small cake at Tara’s home with her family, and then we’d head out for a girls' night. Simple, but perfect. We were sitting in the university cafeteria, at our usual spot by the large windows that overlooked the campus courtyard. The afternoon sun streamed in, with its golden light across our table, it warmed up the whole atmosphere, as we excitedly went over the final details for the party. "So, the cake is sorted, right?" I asked, glancing over Tara’s shoulder at her notebook. "Yep, chocolate with raspberry filling. My mom’s favorite, obviously," Tara replied with an exaggerated eye roll, making Cara and me laugh. "But at least we’ll get to go out afterward and have real fun." "I still can’t believe you’re not having some grand party," Cara teased, tapping her fingers against her coffee cup. "It’s not every day you hit 20, you know." Tara made a movement with her shoulders, with a little smile on her face she said "There’ll be plenty of time for big parties. My mom is already organizing the one for next year. And as it looks it will be huge with too many people” She winked. "For now, a simple night with my favorite girls will do." I smiled, looking at my two best friends. It was always like this with us carefree, easy. There was something comforting about knowing how much we could rely on each other in a world that felt like running way too fast constantly. Suddenly, the loud chatter of the cafeteria died down. A strange, almost electric tension filled the air. Cara, Tara, and I exchanged confused glances before turning to see what had silenced the room. All eyes were fixed on the entrance, and the girls sitting closest to the door were murmuring, wide-eyed and slack-jawed. "What the...? What's going on? " Tara started, but then we saw him.The new guy. I’d heard about him while walking through the corridors but had yet to meet him. He’d just transferred from another pack, one far away, and now he and his family had returned here. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and had dark, curly hair that fell in a messy but somehow perfect way around his face. Despite the biting cold of winter, he was wearing just a plain t-shirt, showing off his strong muscled arms and the perfectly sculpted abs beneath. I must admit that for a moment I had to really remind myself to breathe. But it wasn’t only his body that had left everyone speechless, there was more, it was his eyes. They were the deepest shade of dark blue I’d ever seen, almost like the color of the lake up in the mountains, the one that always looked so dark and endless. For some reason, a strange, tingling sensation crawled up my spine as soon as I laid eyes on him. Still on my seat, I turned and leaned closer to Tara and Cara. "Why do I feel like I’ve met him before?" Tara raised her eyebrows and smirked. "Maybe you just want to meet him and are trying to come up with an excuse to talk to him? I mean, who wouldn’t?" Cara giggled and looking at me said . "Yeah, maybe your instincts are just giving you a head start." I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could, I noticed that he was walking directly toward us. The cafeteria seemed to hold its breath as he moved through the crowd. His beautiful eyes were fixed on me, and with each step he took closer to us, the strange sensation running through my body only intensified. When he reached our table, he stopped. I was totally in awe. Closer he was even more handsome and with a bright, heart-stopping smile, he said, "Hi, Fluff." Tara and Cara froze, their eyes wide, while my own brain seemed to short-circuit. I stared at him, blinking rapidly, and finally managed to stutter out, "R...Ro...Romer?"His smile deepened, a teasing glint in his dark blue eyes. "Glad to see you have not forgotten your childhood friend" I gasped, a flood of memories suddenly rushing back to me. Summer afternoons spent running through the woods, chasing each other by the river. Laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe. The secret treehouse we had sworn no one else would ever find. It was really , Romer. My childhood friend, the one who had disappeared when we were still kids. He had moved to a far away pack and even if we promised each other to keep in touch, but years passed by and slowly we stopped writing. I stared at him, my heart hammering in my chest. "Romer?" I whispered, almost afraid to say it out loud. It didn’t seem possible. I thought I would never meet him again, but now look at him, he was there standing in front of me, making my body feel unknown sensations that I couldn't even understand properly. He smiled even more at the sound of his name with his blue eyes softening, and turning in
The girls were completely in awe and I could feel my cheeks reddening up just like that day. Romer was again looking at me and say with a soft smile on his face “I would say the same even today, I've never seen such beautiful eyes like yours Little Wolf” I couldn't help but make the brightest smile ever and said to the girls “can you imagine me? A little girl who just changed completely her life, had gone through a lot of bad events and finally finds someone who doesn't label her as strange for having one amber eye and a blue one. I immediately decided I had to be friends with this guy” With a smirk on his face he said “You are belittling what I saw. Your eyes are not just amber and blue. The warm notes of caramel brown are beautifully mixed with green and orange notes, reminding me of the beautiful forest in autumn. On the other side there's this super light blue, with turquoise and green stripes that make me think of forests in the summer with the green trees and and fresh blue wa
We stood next to my car, and every time I thought we’d finally said everything we could, one of us would bring up something new, and we’d dive right back in. I didn’t want the day to end. I felt completely at ease. No worries about the studies, or about the future. I could just feel the warmth of a talk with an old friend. As the sky turned from gold to deep blue, I glanced at my phone. The time read far later than I expected and I said "You know, Romer, I never thought I’d see you again. Not like this." "I knew I would come back to you, I just wasn't sure about when it would happen.” I admitted softly. "I’m glad you’re here." He smiled, that familiar warmth in his eyes, and for a brief moment, I felt like the world was perfect again. It was like I had my childhood back, and like a piece of me was again at its place. But as the last rays of sunlight faded, reality began to creep back in, and we agreed that we had to go now. Clumsily we hugged and promised each other to m
“We already have feelings” “Ah, Nyra please stop this”“Don't you try to hide them to me, remember we are in the same body and I feel what you feel.”“i do care about him, obviously. You know very well how scared we both were after moving here. We had lost everything and he was always good and nice to us. He never treated us with pity, he was always protective and never let any other kid be mean. So yes I obviously do care about him, I will be thankful to him for the rest of my life for our first years together. But that's it, stop imagining things that are not here!”“Lya, I know your body and it has never ever tingled in this way for anyone. Admit it!” She was right. “Even if I have feelings for him, that is not true, what should I do? Do you think that he would be interested in me?”“Lya he was eating you with his beautiful glacier blue eyes yesterday. He obviously feels the same for you. And just to make things clear you stubborn human, you are just exactly as beautiful as he
“Thank you” I said while starting again to walk. As we approached the entrance I heard a voice behind me say “It's just my second day here and you're already ignoring me?” Then felt a hand grabbing my hand and I immediately turned around. It was him, so dangerously close to me. His eyes were shining more than ever under the cold winter sunny rays. “I wasn't ignoring you. You're just good at hiding”“I've always been.” He said with a smirk“Can I be your shadow today? I need someone to guide me through these unknown halls, and you happen to be also a very good friend.”“But we don't have the same lessons.”“For a day it won't hurt my studying career to listen also the medicine field ones.”I smiled and while Nyra on the back if my head was screaming “I told you! He is trying to make an excuse to spend more time with you.” And I smiled a bit more before saying “it would be my pleasure.”He tucked his arm under mine, I felt my cheeks burning, and we started walking through the halls wit
Thankfully the other days were more relaxed. Romer waited for me in the morning and we spent every free time together, but he stopped coming to my classes. True to his promise I had no consequencesfor getting kicked out of the chemistry class and the professor acted like it never happened. Finally the weekend came and Tara’s birthday arrived. We gathered at her house to celebrate, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and laughter. Tara’s parents, whom I called Aunt Vera and Uncle Jonas, had always treated me like one of their own, caring about me just as much as they did over Tara and Cara.“Happy birthday, sweetie!” Aunt Vera exclaimed, pulling Tara into a tight hug before turning to me. “And you, Lya, how’s my other daughter doing?” she asked with a playful smile.“I’m good, Aunt Vera,” I laughed, hugging her in return. We spent the evening eating cake and talking about all the things Tara wanted to do for her birthday. After the cake cut, we headed to the club, excited for a girl
“You’ll regret this,” Niall spat, clutching his nose, but Romer didn’t even bat an eye. His was already focused on me. “Are you okay?” he asked softly, while he turned to face me. His voice was gentle, in a big contrast to the tension of moments before. I nodded, still in shock, unable to bring any sound out of my throat. The sight of Romer standing there, his eyes filled with concern, made my heart ache in ways I couldn’t explain. Some time passed, and just as I began to feel like the night was settling down, the club doors swung open. Alpha’s guards stormed in, their expressions severe as they made their way toward us. “What’s going on?” I asked in confusion. Two of the guards stepped forward, with their eyes eyes fixed on us, and one said “The Alpha wants to see you both.” I turned to Romer, with a growing bad feeling in my chest, knowing the night just turned longer and more annoying as I expected. “We’re not going anywhere,” Said Romer firmly, stepping in front of me. “No
Alpha Varek sighed, rubbing his temple as if trying to ward off a growing headache. “They are my guests, Zorya, and they will be treated as such. Please, don’t make this harder than it already is. I’m tired enough as it is and definitely not in the mood to have a discussion with you.” Zorya’s lips pressed into a thin line, but she fell silent, though I could see the simmering anger in her eyes. The Alpha turned back to us, gesturing for us to enter the living room. We settled onto the soft leather sofas, the tension in the room thick enough to choke on. “Now, Lya,” Alpha Varek began, his voice calm but firm. “Tell me what happened.” I swallowed, gathering my thoughts before I spoke. “Niall…he... just didn't want to leave me alone. I told him to back off as he was way too close to me, but he didn’t listen... and just came even closer. Romer heard my pleads and ...stepped in to divide us, and things…got out of hand.” Alpha Varek nodded slowly, turning his gaze to Romer for confirmat
