Memories

The girls were completely in awe and I could feel my cheeks reddening up just like that day. Romer was again looking at me and say with a soft smile on his face “I would say the same even today, I've never seen such beautiful eyes like yours Little Wolf”

I couldn't help but make the brightest smile ever and said to the girls “can you imagine me? A little girl who just changed completely her life, had gone through a lot of bad events and finally finds someone who doesn't label her as strange for having one amber eye and a blue one. I immediately decided I had to be friends with this guy”

With a smirk on his face he said “You are belittling what I saw. Your eyes are not just amber and blue. The warm notes of caramel brown are beautifully mixed with green and orange notes, reminding me of the beautiful forest in autumn. On the other side there's this super light blue, with turquoise and green stripes that make me think of forests in the summer with the green trees and and fresh blue water”

I was speechless. No one ever said something like this to me. My heterochromia is not very usual in wolves and to have it also when in my human form is even more rare. I couldn't believe that even after all these years he could still make me feel like I'm the center of the world, just like that day. I couldn't help but stare at him and smile.

Cara, who had been trying to hold in her curiosity, quickly chimed in. "Wow. Now tell me what’s the story behind that nickname? I've never heard anyone call Lya like that, we’re dying to know."

Romer glanced at me, a mischievous grin playing on his lips before he turned back to my friends. "Ah, the famous ‘Fluff" nickname." He chuckled softly.

I felt my face heat up, knowing exactly what he was about to say. My friends stared at him, wide-eyed, eager for the explanation.

Romer leaned back in his chair, his smile widening as he spoke. "So, when we were little, Lya was the first one in our group to be able to shift into a wolf. It was a huge deal because we were still really young, and no one else could shift yet. But the thing was... she couldn’t exactly control it very well." He glanced at me, his eyes twinkling. "Every time she got scared, nervous, or embarrassed, she would shift into her wolf form. And because she was so young, her wolf looked more like a little sweet puppy than anything else."

I immediately covered up my face with my hands as Cara and Tara burst out laughing. "You didn’t have to tell them that part," I muttered.

Romer laughed, completely ignoring my plea. "So, quite daily I was walking around in my human form, holding this tiny fluffy ball of furr on my arms. I brought her back to her parents so she could feel safer and shift again. And when she happened to shift because of excitement she would just be following me everywhere. She was like my shadow, always by my side. That’s how she got the nickname ‘Fluff.’"

Tara wiped tears from her eyes, still laughing. "That’s adorable! I can’t believe we didn’t know about this!"

Cara grinned. "Fluff,It suits you. I think that starting from today I'm going to use it too."

I rolled my eyes, trying to hide my embarrassment, but secretly, I loved hearing Romer call me that again. It was like a piece of my past had come back to life.

We spent the rest of the afternoon like that, talking, laughing, and bringing up again long forgotten memories. Romer told stories I had forgotten, and I filled him in on all the things that had happened since he’d left. It was surreal, sitting there with him after all these years, and yet, it felt so right.

As the day wore on and the sun started to set, we gathered our things to head home. But when we reached the parking lot, after saying goodbye to Tara and Cara, Romer and I lingered, reluctant to part ways. The golden light of the sunset gave to the campus a warm glow, and there was something in the air that made it impossible for either of us to leave.
