—MOONSHADOW PACK TERRITORY—
Madeleine woke to an empty tent. The sound coming from outside the tent told her that the wedding feast was ongoing. She stood up groggily and walked towards the tent flap drawing it back to look outside. She saw Rebecca and Philip illuminated but the bonfire as they cuddled next to each other. She felt a wave of nausea and hate at the sight and dropped the tent flap. Madeleine looked around the tent and saw a knife on a desk. She was going to leave, no matter what. She picked up the knife and walked towards the back of the tent and tore through it. She climbed out of it and headed off into the woods. She knew what would happen if she stayed. She'd be forced to spend the rest of her life witnessing what she lost because of what she was. Or rather because of what she wasn't. It wasn't her fault that she was different. She didn't know why she could not shift. If she could change it, she would. But it seems she was brought into the world for the sole purpose of suffering. So, if she was going to suffer, she would do it on her own terms. Madeleine headed further into the woods. She knew where she was headed; the border of the pack's territory. She didn't care if she was labelled a rogue wolf. Who would even care? She arrived at the border and crossed it. She was in neutral territory now. Hopefully, no one would notice she was gone until the next morning. She had to get to the border of Lunaria, the werewolves' territory. She would get as far away from them as she could. She touched her palm to her cheek and her throat and the images of the people whom she loved the most hurting her played through her mind in clear details. She strengthened her resolve and kept going. Madeleine heard her stomach rumble and realised that she hadn't eaten all day. Not that she could bring herself to eat now. Madeleine knew she had been running and walking for hours and that daytime was approaching quickly. She looked up and was glad to see the border markers of Lunaria. The Moonshadow Pack's territory was the closest to the borders and she was glad for this. She would disappear. She would not let herself be forced to live and watch Philip and Rebecca as a couple. As she was getting close to the border, she heard a cracking sound followed by a searing pain at the back of her head. She stumbled and wavered on her feet, disoriented and scared that her efforts to escape had been in vain. Madeleine felt herself being lifted off her feet and she was tossed into the back of a cage. She watched in confusion as her masked assailants lifted the cage, moved with quiet efficiency across the border and placed it onto a wagon. Trapped once again. Her fate, being decided by others. ****** —FORESTS OUTSIDE LUNARIA, AETHERIA— She fought her dizziness and attempted to remember the path they were taking but they had diverted into the forests on the opposite side of Lunaria and she hadn't regained her bearings. They drove into a clearing in the forest and stopped. “You shouldn't be wandering around. It makes it easy to get in trouble,” one of her captors laughed as they picked up her cage and put it down. “Fuck you.” Madeleine touched her palm to the back of her head, noticing the blood from the blow. “At least, give me something I can use to stop the bleeding.” “You're a feisty one, aren't you? That'll change soon,” was the reply. Madeleine touched the cage and realised it was enchanted. “Explains why I didn't sense them. They're using magic. Fucking bastards,” she muttered to herself. Another cage on the other side of the clearing rattled and shook, a shrieking sound coming from it. She couldn't see what was in the cage but its cage was a lot larger than hers and whatever was inside didn't like the idea of being captured. The assailants approached the cage and banged against it trying to quiet the creature. “Hey, leave it alone,” Madeleine shouted. “Mind your fucking business. You should be more worried about yourself,” was the response from one of them as they continued banging against the cage. Madeleine watched as one of them used magic to subdue it. “We need to sell the griffin as soon as possible. We can't keep moving it around,” the spellcaster said to the others, obviously drained from the amount of magic required to keep the griffin subdued. Madeleine's eyes widened in surprise. A griffin. She had heard stories about them when she was growing up but nobody had ever actually seen one. Or rather, nobody had ever believed anybody who had claimed to see one. “Load them up,” a voice commanded, pulling her from her thoughts. “We're leaving now.” Both cages were loaded up into a bigger wagon and they moved deeper into the forest. Madeleine felt her wolf sit up. She sensed danger and she knew the danger wasn't coming from the poachers or the griffin. The griffin started rattling its cage again as if it sensed the same thing she did. Madeleine’s next moments were a blur. One minute she was in the cage trying to pinpoint where the feeling of danger was coming from and the next minute, her cage and that of the griffin were thrown off the wagon and she felt the enchantments on it wear off. She hit the door of her cage, busting it open. She ran past the griffin's cage where it was trying to break open its cage without succeeding. Whoever it was that was attacking them was either there for her or the griffin. She wasn't going to wait to find out. As she got farther away, her wolf clawed at her to return and help the griffin escape. “Oh, fuck this,” Madeleine cursed under her breath as she turned back and ran towards the griffin who had stopped trying to break the cage. As she approached the cage, the griffin started its protests again. “Calm down. I'm trying to help you,” Madeleine retorted as she began prying at the cage. The clearing went quiet, the only sounds coming from the griffin and her trying to open the cage. She turned and saw a hooded figure walking towards her with a sword. Madeleine kept pulling at the cage door. “Open dammit,” she screamed as she tore the cage door off. The griffin jumped out of the cage and charged the hooded figure. Madeleine watched and expected the griffin to attack the person but stopped short of the figure. “Hello, Anya.” the person said as the hood was pulled back to reveal a man underneath. “I've missed you, girl.” “Okay? That's my cue,” Madeleine whispered as she turned to leave. “You move and you die,” came the voice, keeping her rooted to the spot. Madeleine turned to face the man as he walked towards her, her gaze fixed on the sword. “You plan on killing me either way, aren't you?” Madeleine asked, resignation in her voice. “You're a smart one,” came the chuckled reply. “Spare me?” Madeleine asked tentatively. He stopped and tilted his head to the side. “Now, why would I want to do that?” “I saved your griffin?” Madeleine shrugged, slowly inching backwards. “Firstly, I saw you run away and come back. Who says you're not one of them? Secondly, the instruction was to stay put,” he said, as he lunged at her with his sword. Before the hit could land, Madeleine was pulled up into the air by the back of her shirt by the griffin, the sword barely missing her legs. The griffin put her down and put herself between Madeleine and the mystery man. “I see,” he said, as he let go of the sword and it vanished into thin air. “So, you have magic,” Madeleine stated from behind the griffin. “Yes, I do and you're a werewolf.” “Some would beg to differ,” Madeleine responded, her voice low. “Come on, girl. We're leaving,” he said as he turned away. “Well, bye then,” Madeleine said with a wave of her hand. “That includes you, love,” he stated. He began walking away and Madeleine stared at his back, shock and disbelief registering on her face. “Nope.” He stopped and turned to face her, his face devoid of emotion. “You can come willingly or I can tie you up and toss you on Anya. Your choice.” “Um… I don't know you and you're asking me to leave with you? No, thank you.” “Ropes then,” He stated as he started walking towards her. “Why should I come with you? You just tried to kill me, you psycho.” “But I didn't. And Anya won't leave you even if I do,” he shrugged. “So you're doing it for the griffin?” “You're also a stranger to me, love.” “Fine,” Madeleine huffed, crossing her arms. “But I'm not going willingly. You try anything funny, and I'll…” she trailed off, realizing she didn't have much to threaten him with. Her gaze flickered to the griffin, who was watching them. “I’ll tell your bird you're a terrible person.” He laughed. “Anya knows I'm a terrible person. It’s part of my charm.” He snapped his fingers, and a length of rope materialized in his hand. “Now, are we doing this the easy way or the hard way?" Madeleine glared at him. She knew she was making a terrible decision. This man was clearly dangerous, possibly insane, and definitely not to be trusted. But the alternative was even less appealing. “Fine,” she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. “But if you try anything…” He cut her off with a smirk. “Just get over here, love. The sooner we leave, the sooner you can start regretting your life choices.” Madeleine hesitated, then took a deep breath and stepped forward. As she reached him, he raised the rope, and before she could react, he looped it around her wrists, pulling it tight. “Hey!” she protested, struggling against the sudden restraint. “What the hell? You said…” He ignored her protests, his eyes suddenly focused on something in the distance. The smile vanished from his face, replaced by a look of grim determination. “We have company,” he murmured, his voice low and dangerous. Madeleine followed his gaze and saw them. Werewolves emerging from the trees, their eyes glowing with an eerie light. And at the front of the pack, she saw two figures that made her blood run cold. Rebecca and Philip. They were looking directly at her, their faces a mixture of anger and… something else. Something that looked disturbingly like triumph. They were here for her and if the expression on their faces was anything to go by, they didn't care if they got her dead or alive.—FORESTS OUTSIDE LUNARIA, AETHERIA—Dante looked from the wolves approaching to the woman next to him and watched as her face went pale. “Friends of yours?”“Nope. Absolutely not,” she said, her voice shaking. “Can we leave now? Please?”Dante felt the waves of emotions coming off her; fear, sadness, anger, hate, hurt. These people, whoever they were, seemed to be the reason she was here. “Okay.” Dante raised his hand, gathering energy, and transported them to the opposite side of the forest. “They won't be able to find you now,” he said, as he walked towards her and touched her forehead.“Uh, what are you doing?” She asked warily. “And where the hell are we?”“To answer both your questions, I'm locking your scent so you can't be tracked and we're far away from the people chasing you,” Dante replied before walking away from her towards the griffin.“You're one powerful fae or mage, aren't you?”Dante looked at her with repulsion etched into his features. “I am neither.”“Okay, then.
—FORESTS OUTSIDE LUNARIA, AETHERIA—Dante woke up, his ears twitching picking up the sound of light whimpering, crying and moaning. He looked across at Madeleine realising the sounds were coming from her and he wondered what had happened to her that made her dreams haunted. He considered blocking her dreams so she could sleep peacefully but as he made a move to approach her, Madeleine woke up with a start, pain etched across her features. As Madeleine sat up and pulled her knees to her chest, shaking from the force of her nightmares, Dante's eyes narrowed with concern. He could sense the depth of her distress, and he didn't understand why but his instincts urged him to comfort her. What the hell had he gotten himself into? He barely knew her. He definitely didn't care about her but every fibre of his being screamed against the pain she was silently enduring.Madeleine's eyes were closed, and her face was scrunched up in a mixture of pain and fear. —FORESTS IN AETHERIA— Dante walked behind and let Madeleine and Anya take the lead. He watched her quietly. She wasn't the same person crippled with fear and pain from her nightmares. She knew how to hide her pain behind her smile. She refused to face whatever it was that had happened to her. She had accepted the outcome but she was yet to accept the cause, whatever it was. Madeleine suddenly stopped walking and turned around, her eyes narrowing at Dante. "You're staring at me," she said, her voice accusing. Dante raised an eyebrow but didn't deny it. "I was just observing," he said, his tone neutral and devoid of feeling. Madeleine's eyes flashed with annoyance. "Observing? You were watching me like I'm some kind of puzzle to be solved." Dante shrugged. "Maybe I was. You're not very good at hiding your pain, love. You smile and pretend everything is fine, but it's not. Why do you do that?" “What do you know?” Madeleine scoffed, irritated by his questioning. “Enough. Yo
—MOONSHADOW PACK TERRITORY—Alpha Philip paced back and forth across the expanse of the hall, his mind reeling. Who was the man with Madeleine? Why couldn't he track them after they disappeared? Why was Madeleine with him?He stopped pacing when he heard a knock on the door. “Enter.”His Beta, Luke, walked in. He was of average height; less than six feet tall but it did not take away from the lethality he was capable of.“Alpha,” Luke began. “We could not find her. None of us have been able to pick up her scent since she disappeared with that man and the bird.”Philip stalked forward, his gaze cold. “So, you're telling me that you all failed?”“You were there, Alpha,” Luke continued, choosing his words carefully. “Whoever that man is, he can use magic. He is the only obvious reason why we can't track Madeleine.”“I want her back. Alive,” Philip stated, his eyes glinting with rage.“And the man?” Luke asked. “Kill him and bring Madeleine and the griffin back alive,” was the growled re
—UNKNOWN LOCATION IN AETHERIA— A solitary figure stood in the middle of a forest. He never knew how he got there but whenever his presence was required, he always seemed to be able to find his way there and back home but could never find this place otherwise. The male Veridian stood at attention, his shoulders tense with fear and unease. As a Veridian, a fae capable of compelling the truth from anyone, he was accustomed to being the one in control of conversations, not the one trembling with uncertainty. "What of the griffin?" a deep voice boomed from within the confines of the trees. The Veridian looked around him, seeking out the voice. It wasn't the first time he had attempted to find its owner and just like before, he couldn't pinpoint it. "We... we lost it," he replied, his voice faltering slightly. "Someone killed all of the men you sent and took the griffin, along with a wolf girl." A guttural sound of rage echoed through the trees, causing leaves to tremble and fall arou
—OUTSKIRTS OF VALORIA, AETHERIA—The forest gradually thinned as they approached Valoria, sunlight breaking through the canopy in broader patches. The scent of woodsmoke and humanity grew stronger with each step. Distant sounds of city life, merchants calling their wares, the clang of blacksmiths' hammers, and the general hum of thousands of people living in close quarters, drifted toward them on the breeze.Dante stopped at the edge of the tree line, where the forest gave way to cleared land surrounding the city walls. He had imagined this moment countless times over the past fortnight and the relief he would feel when he could finally be rid of his unwanted companion and return home. The relief he now found noticeably absent.Madeleine came to stand beside him, her dark eyes widening at the sight of Valoria's imposing stone walls. —VALORIA, AETHERIA— The early morning light filtered through the herb-lined windows of Lucas and Sera's apothecary, casting a soft golden glow across the workbench where Madeleine carefully sorted dried lavender. Her movements were deliberate and confident. It was a far cry from the wary girl who had first arrived six months ago. "Pass the chamomile," Sera called from across the room, where she was preparing morning potions and elixirs. "And check those rose hips. I think they're starting to go moldy on the bottom of the basket." Madeleine caught the basket with practiced ease, sorting through the herbs with a critical eye. "You're right," she said, pulling out the discolored rose hips. "They've gone bad. I will see about preparing a new batch." Sera laughed, a warm sound that had become familiar over the months. "Look at you. Six months ago, you couldn't tell a rose hip from a berry, and now you're commenting on herb quality like a professional." "I've learned," Madeleine
Dante stood on a rocky ledge in Sunstone Peaks, his hands planted firmly on the rough stones as he gazed at the mountains sprawled beneath him, lost in his thoughts. It was faint but clear. His body went tense. He heard the fear in her voice right away. He hadn't expected to hear her call for him and definitely not this soon.Without hesitation, Dante stepped away from the mountain's edge. —SUNSTONE PEAKS, AETHERIA— The forest path was well-worn but narrow, winding between ancient trees whose branches formed a dense canopy overhead. Shafts of sunlight pierced through gaps in the leaves, creating spotted patterns on the forest floor. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the sweet scent of pine and wildflowers. Dante moved with purpose, his pace brisk, and Madeleine had to push herself to keep up while remaining undetected. The underbrush provided enough cover, allowing her to duck behind trees whenever he paused or seemed about to turn. "This is ridiculous," she thought to herself as she crouched behind a particularly large tree trunk. "I should just confront him directly." But something held her back; a mixture of curiosity and an odd reluctance to face him again so soon. The memory of their last encounter was still raw, his words cutting deeper than she cared to admit. After nearly twenty minutes of this silent pursuit, they reached a small clearing. Madeleine cro
—DAWNSPIRE CASTLE, SUNSTONE PEAKS, AETHERIA— Madeleine woke up the next day, still churning with frustration from her encounter with Dante. She dressed quickly, pulling on a pair of worn leather boots and a simple tunic she'd borrowed from the castle's stores. "Eight days," she muttered to her reflection in the small mirror hanging on the stone wall. "Eight days and I'm still no closer to finding my place here." She ran a hand through her tangled hair, wincing as her fingers caught in the knots. For a moment, she allowed herself to remember Dante's expression when she'd confronted him; that brief flash of something behind his eyes before the walls had come up again. Something that had made her breath catch in her throat despite her anger. She shook her head sharply. "Focus, Madeleine," she chided herself. "You're here to learn, not to moon over some arrogant phoenix." ****** The training arena was already bustling despite the early hour. The clash of steel against steel echoed
—DAWNSPIRE CASTLE, SUNSTONE PEAKS, AETHERIA—Madeleine had wandered the stone hallways of Dawnspire Castle for the past week, largely invisible to its other inhabitants. The dragons moved through their daily routines with pinpoint efficiency, barely acknowledging her presence beyond the occasional curious glance. She hadn't managed to catch a glimpse of any of the dragons in their natural form, so she spent most of her time just observing them from shadowed archways and corridors, watching their interactions with one another and their training sessions with growing fascination. The central courtyard had become her favorite place. There, the dragons sparred with weapons that glinted dangerously in the sunlight, their swords clashing against shields, daggers flipping through nimble fingers, and bodies moving with fluid grace. She'd watched them all, but her eyes continually returned to one particular fighter.Dante.He moved with a different kind of grace, his movements somehow both flu

Damp soil pressed against his cheek, and the scent of moss and decaying leaves filled his nostrils. He pushed himself up onto his elbows, blinking rapidly as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. He was in a clearing. Tall trees formed a perfect circle around him, their branches reaching toward a night sky dotted with stars. How had he gotten here? The last thing he remembered was—"You've finally awakened. Good."The voice seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once, echoing through the clearing yet somehow remaining quiet enough that it couldn't have been heard beyond the tree line. The Veridian scrambled to his feet, spinning in place. "Master? What do you need from me?""Nothing," the voice replied. "Your services are no longer required. The situation has evolved beyond what someone of your capabilities can handle."A chill ran down the Veridian's spine.

She let out a nervous laugh, running her hands through her hair. "Ridiculous."She paced across the stone floor, her footsteps echoing in the cavernous room. "He's toying with me," she muttered. "Phoenixes are myths. Children's tales. Magical birds that burst into flame and are reborn." She gestured wildly at the empty space where he had stood. "They don't exist, and they certainly should not look like..." Her hand waved dismissively. "whatever the hell he is."The air shimmered beside her, and Dante reappeared, dropping a familiar bags on the floor with a thud. Her belongings.
