Lila's POV

My arm was covering my face, and I already considered myself dead or badly injured. I heard bones breaking, but they weren’t my bones, so I dropped my arm to see. There were two men, throwing punches at the man who was about to attack me—they kept punching until he fell to the ground; dead or passed out, I didn’t care.

I rose to my feet and took careful steps towards them, afraid they might jump at me the way the man on the ground did.

I was about 2 meters away from them, so I bowed my head a bit, “Thank you for helping me out.” I said, rubbing the arm I fell on.

I didn’t get any response from them, instead, the eyes of the man with the jet black hair and hazel eyes were fixed on me, while the other man with the well-trimmed brown hair kept exchanging glances between me and the other man. Honestly, if I were to judge their appearance, I’d say they must be walking models. I’ve never seen men as good-looking as they were.

“I said thank you,” I waved my right hand in front of the one with the hazel eyes, he blinked them, and cleared his throat.

He moved closer and leaned in towards me, sniffing as if there was a strange smell coming from me. I shifted backward, feeling intimidated by his actions.

While I was trying to slowly get away from him, I lost my footing—as I was falling backward, he reached for my hand and grabbed me, pulling me closer to him. Our faces were only a few inches apart, so I could feel his breath on my face.

He closed his eyes, and drew in a sharp breath, “Mate,” he growled in a low manner, his hazel eyes turned golden as he opened them.

I staggered backward, removing my hand from his grip. “Mate?” I asked, looking between him and his partner, who remained glued to a particular spot.

“You people aren’t normal too right? If not, why are your eyes suddenly golden? They were hazel earlier. And did you also growl?” I asked, moving back further with my whole body trembling.

The golden-eyed man started walking closer to me, his strides heavy and calculated. I raised my hands to my chest, forming an x sign, hoping that would make him back away.

But nothing prepared me for his next action. He lifted me up from the ground and threw me over his shoulders.

“Put me down!” I shouted repeatedly, thrashing my legs in the air. But he seemed to be unfazed by my actions.

I stopped thrashing around after exhausting my strength. The other guy was in front, while my kidnapper walked behind him—they were both my kidnappers. The fact that he didn’t say a word makes him an accomplice.

I noticed I was being let down. The moment my feet touched the ground, I looked at my surroundings and discovered the two SUVs right before us. They were really going to kidnap me. Shivers ran down my spine at the thought of every bad thing they’d do to me.

“Let’s calmly talk about this, okay?” I turned, facing the golden-eyed man, whose eyes were now back to normal, strange right?

He raised his eyebrows, and I took that as my cue to continue speaking.

“I’m very poor, even if you kidnap me you won’t get any ransom from my family—my mother doesn’t care if I die or go missing.” I laughed nervously, feeling hurt at my own statement, because I knew how truthful they were.

“Get in the car.” He said, but it was more like a command.

I looked around again and discovered the other SUV contained about five men. I sighed defeatedly and entered the car reluctantly.

The man with the green eyes and brown hair went over to take the wheel, while the one that carried me, sat right beside me.

“Am I getting kidnapped to be killed, or for human trafficking?” I covered my body with my hands, shaking at the thought of being sold out for sex. “You can make me do every other thing but not prostitution, okay?” The thought of ending up like my mother terrified me. Was it that hard for her to settle with a man?

“You are overthinking.” He finally replied, bringing me out of my thoughts.

“Why don’t you explain this situation to me then?” I leaned towards him, raising my eyebrows.

He shifted in his seat as if my closeness with him made him uncomfortable.

“My name is Dominic, Alpha of the Blackwood pack. And behind the wheel is Jonathan, the Beta, and my best friend. We…”

“My name is Lila, a mermaid from the Pacific, the third princess of the mermaid queen.” I stretched forth my hand for a handshake.

Dominic raised his eyebrow in anger, while Jonathan gave a short laugh from the driver’s seat.

“You think I’m joking?” He asked, and I could sense anger from his tone.

“You have no right to be angry. You kidnapped me first, and now you are telling me you guys are werewolves? Even children in kindergarten know werewolves don’t exist, what do you take me for?” I shot back at him, making my anger very evident in my voice.

“I’m sorry we had to bring you with us in that manner. But the situation is more serious than you think. I’ll explain it better when we get to my pack. So before then, I want you to be calm and don’t be afraid, none of us here would hurt you.” His voice sounded calming and reassuring, but the werewolf bullshit is what I couldn’t accept.

I didn’t reply to him, so I looked out the window instead, wondering how far into the wood we were.

******

“Little girl, open the door,” he banged on the door again.

I wrapped myself beneath my quilt, shaking in fear, with tears streaming down my face.

“I just want to have some fun with you.” He said, and I could imagine the disgusting face he made while saying that statement.

I felt an arm touching me in bed, it felt so creepy and I thought the man had managed to enter, I shifted in bed, “Don’t touch me,” I screamed. I felt his hands on me again.

******

“I said don’t touch me!” I screamed, my heart beating out of my chest.

“Are you okay?” I heard Dominic’s voice beside me. Then I realized I slept off and had a dream.

“Sorry, I had a bad dream,” I said, apologizing if I had hit him instead of the man in my dream.

He didn’t say anything, but I saw a flash of anger in his eyes before he stepped out of the car.

I followed him and nothing prepared me for the sight before me.

I saw a small werewolf, or a pup as they call them in books running towards us, my heart doubled its racing pace, and it felt like I’d have an attack at any moment.

The wolf kept running towards us without stopping, wagging its tail, and sticking out its tongue.

The moment it got to us, it jumped, and I let out a shrieking scream.

My back collided with the car as I kept screaming. My screaming stopped the moment the wolf jumped into Dominic’s arms, licking his face. It was the same reaction dogs give to their owner when they return home. I looked ahead and saw other little wolves, playing in the background. But I almost fainted when I saw some of them shapeshifting. I turned to face Dominic who had dropped the wolf in his arms on the ground. He gave me the look that said, ‘I told you.’ I shook my head slowly, saying ‘This can’t be real,’ in my mind.As if he could read my mind, he shook his head slowly, following my action, ‘It is real.’ I interpreted his head shaking that way. I stepped further away from him. Why would he bring me into the wolves’ den? He ought to have left me in the woods. “I know you exist now. So, can I go back home?” I asked, hoping he could sense the nervousness in my voice. “Come with me,” he didn't even wait for my response before he started walking towards a house that had a sign

He didn’t reply to me, and he entered the car, starting it immediately.I closed the door to the passenger seat and went to the back seat. He opened his mouth to protest, “Nothing will make me sit beside you in front,” I beat him to it. He figured I wouldn’t listen to him regardless, so he moved the car and we left the pack.I felt betrayed, not because I was rejected by him—but the fact that he already had an arranged mate, and I

Dominic’s POV We were coming back from the annual werewolves conference held in New York. I was already tired, so I decided to take a nap. I asked Jonathan to turn off the AC so I could open the window. I love the smell of nature. Five minutes into my nap, I caught the smell of vanilla in the air—just vanilla. It’s very intoxicating and I knew I had not smelled something like that before. “Stop the car,” I said to Jonathan, removing my seat belt. He stopped without questioning my orders. The SUV following behind us stopped too. I stepped out of the car, likewise Jonathan. I instructed the rest of them to stay behind, while I mindlinked Jonathan about my new discovery.Finding my mate was something I had always prepared for. And I wondered what she was doing deep in the woods.“Could she be a rogue?” Jonathan said through the mind-link as if reading my mind. “Let’s find out,” I said, leading the way as I followed the scent. I saw her lying on the floor, her arms protecting her fa

Lila's POV Judith shifting into a werewolf wasn’t something I thought I’d witness in my lifetime. And to think her wolf was very strong too because she already took down three of those wolves. I scrambled behind a tree, hiding myself away from the fight scene. Judith fighting against six men was a lot for her, even though she was able to take down three of them, the other three managed to hit her as well, rendering her injured and weak. I felt a sharp pain in my scalp as a hand grabbed my hair from behind, I let out a heart-wrenching scream before turning to see there was another one; they were seven, not six. “Let me go!” I yelped in pain. My vision was immediately blinded by the hot tears that was getting ready to stream down any moment from now.“If you don’t want to die with your friend over there, stop resisting and follow me obediently.” The wolf that held my hair sneered. I could feel his hot breath on my neck, I felt even more disgusted. The pain in my scalp was intense. I c

His tone was laced with anger.“Alpha..” I bowed my head, “Now that they know she’s an elemental, their fear will increase, especially because of what the prophecy said.” I responded, grinning from ear to ear.“Who told you to act on your own will?” he was getting more angry.“Did it ever occur to you that she’s the alpha’s mate and there’s a high probability that he might choose to protect her instead of letting her go?” He seethed, moving closer to me, anger seeping through his eyes.“Yes, but…”“Do not but me, Morgana…” he barked, “You told me she mustn't be mated to the alpha, or it might be bad for us. What you did is totally irresponsible, and it won’t benefit us one bit.” He stopped right in front of me, resisting the urge to hit me.Yes, I knew. What I did was irresponsible but that was exactly what I wanted. I wanted her to be mated to the alpha, and unlo

Lila's POV “What are you doing?” There was a slight panic in my voice. Not because of Juliana but because of the death stares I was getting from everyone who stood around. Their looks held so much disgust and I wish I could just vanish into this air.“I’m just trying to ensure a pest knows her place and does not act all high and mighty.” She mocked, not batting an eye like she just did something heroic. I could hear and see everyone whispering from the corner of my eyes, and the embarrassment that washed over me was worse than the one I had after greeting them with no response. I ran out through the door, wiping the tears away from my face. I was out because I needed to find Dominic but now I was unsure of where to go or if I wanted to see him in my current state. I looked at my surrounding and noticed an abandoned stable at the end of the street. I headed towards it. I needed a break from all these, I needed to clear my head.I sat in a corner in the manger and cried my heart out.

Lila's POV “Lila!” Judith exclaimed, obviously shocked by rebellion. I shouldn’t have snapped, but I couldn’t help being peevish when nothing was going my way. My mom doesn’t care about me, I’m in a pack where I’ll always be walked over, and the fact that a kid is going through stuff in this pack and no one is aware just made me doubt Dominic’s competency. These thoughts alone make me want to scream out loud and curse the universe for making me so unlucky. Why does life have to be so difficult? Haven't I suffered enough?“Is there something wrong? I believe I haven’t done anything to piss you off.” Dominic said, fixing his cold gaze on me so that they could literally dig a hole through me. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, trying to avoid his gaze as much as I could. “Do you really think you’ve done nothing wrong to me? I know you saved my life and I’m grateful for that, but you see whatever comes after that, I’m not sure I can be grateful for it.” I shot back, all in one breat

Lila’s POV Judith rubbed her left forearm with her right hand, a habit she has developed over the years. She often did this when she’s about to lie to the director or her supervisor for coming late. I knew at that moment that whatever she was about to say would be lies. My concern was; why? “I wasn’t born in the pack and my parents didn’t want me to be involved in the pack's politics and all since they were members of the council. So, I’ve been away from the pack since I was born.” She lied smoothly, with a smile wilder than her lips. You'd never be able to detect her lies. Such a smooth talker.“And who are your parents?” Dominic asked, obviously not seeing through her lies. “They are the Coles.” She replied. “Yeah, I know them. Very devoted members of the council.” Dominic praised her parents. Judith nodded with a smile. I was tempted to rat her out, but I've always been good at minding my own business. She probably has her reasons.“She’s on the first floor, Alpha,” Jonathan i

Lila's POV I had to confirm my ears were working perfectly. How could he accept me as his mate when he knew it would be a sad ending for us? We’ve talked about it already and he knew it was best we stayed away from each other. I didn’t want him to die, and I certainly didn’t want to end up dead either. “So, do you all agree that she doesn’t need to leave now?” Leo asked, facing the crowd back. A guy with blond hair raised his hand. He had a worried expression, so I guessed he must have had a legitimate question to ask. “Yes, Elan,” Leo said, pointing at the blonde guy whose name was supposedly Elan. It wasn’t surprising Leo knew the names of all his pack members—he used to be the alpha after all.Elan rose to his feet, “What if she goes berserk one day?” Everyone turned their head towards him. He cleared his throat before he continued speaking. “My grandmother told me about vessels with multiple powers. If they can’t manage it well, they go berserk—the outcome is disaster.” He

I saw how everyone went silent the moment he started walking, even I was shaken up a bit by the way he approached us. “Regardless or whatever, you shouldn't treat your Alpha's Mate with so much disrespect. I was sure I made several lectures regarding this so that the tragic event that befell shadowfangs wouldn’t repeat itself in history ever again. Did most of you sleep during those lectures?” He asked with a voice full of authority. The room boomed with his voice as it resonated throughout the silent hall. For him to have lectured them in the past, he must have been someone of a high reputation with immense wisdom, like a lecturer. But even so, why did he have so much power over controlling the rest of the werewolves? I

Lila's POV Brian explained what the meeting would be like on our way to the pack house. He told me to be mentally prepared that they are meant to say all kinds of words to me. Honestly, I was a bit scared since I’d have to face a large crowd while they judged me endlessly. “Do you plan to deny it?” Brian asked, jolting me out of my thoughts. I took a deep breath as he kept staring at me to hear my answer.“I don’t know, Brian,” I said tears welled up in my eyes again.” After hearing what actually happened to my mother, I couldn’t help but think that she was judged wrongly.” I continued,” “Yes, she had her fault. Revenge doesn’t end a problem but it rather adds to the existing problem. But on the other hand, I doubt I would have handled the situation any better if I were in her shoes.”I said truthfully. I felt bad for my mother, and denying her further would only make me feel more sorry for her. I was honestly torn between them since I knew accepting her would only make me face

Lila's POV Everyone was now gathered in Dominic’s office after hearing the news about Sophia’s death. Morinda was quite shocked; she said she never wished her dead, even if all Sophia ever wanted was her property. But the fact that she died suddenly could only mean one thing.“Was an autopsy conducted?” Brian asked, facing Jonathan. “Even if an autopsy was conducted it wouldn’t reveal anything as long as witchcraft was involved in her death,” Morinda said, hitting us with reality. “But one thing is certain—-she must have been in a cohort with the witch you are looking for.” She said what I was sure everyone was now aware of. “You mentioned that only the royals could erase other’s memories, right?” Dominic asked in a stoic tone. His expression had turned cold ever since heard the news. The look he had at that moment was a look that said he would murder anyone. He must have been really pissed at the whole situation. Morinda adjusted in her seat so she could face Dominic before sp

Victor’s POV The candlelight in my room flickered weakly against the dark stone walls, casting a weird shadow that seemed to be struggling to breathe, twisting and writhing like silent specters in the corner of the room. The air was thick with the smell of herbs, and the faint coppery smell of blood. A sign that a dark ritual had just taken place there. I sat on the office chair in my room with my hand under my chin, and my fingers tapping impatiently on my left cheek. I locked my gaze on Morgana, who was standing before me at that moment. She paced the room in elegant steps that felt captivating and also unnerving at the same time. She moved in a smooth and calculative way like she was deciding on how to feast on her next prey. Her silver hair, which I always mistook to be a wig, spilled over her shoulders, almost reaching her waist. She glanced towards me and a sly smile curved on her bright red lips, her blue eyes glowing with mischief. In her hand remained the bottle of el

I nodded my head at him as I looked at the hand he was holding that was dripping with blood. I almost forgot that I cut myself.I tried to remove my hand from his but he held onto it. Before I knew it, someone was running towards us with the first aid kit box. Dominic must have given out the command through mindlinking. He let go of my hand to accept the box, then he proceeded to place it on the ground. I looked around to see what people were saying while Dominic’s attention was on the box. As I expected their gazes were fixed on me—demanding an explanation. I owed them one.“It’s going to sting a bit,” Dominic said before grabbing my hand to apply the disinfectant. Lila's POV When Morinda mentioned that she would be using my blood, everyone went stiff. We all thought she meant something bigger than life itself. Eventually, she explained that a small cut would be made on my palm, so the blood could fizzy out, and then the spell would be recited by me. Everyone eventually calmed their mind and started heading out of the room one after the other.First, it was Brian—I bet he was the most affected by the meeting we held and he couldn’t wait to leave. Probably to go and think or even subject himself to something worse. I wanted to follow him, but the look in his eyes only showed that he wanted to be alone. He was followed by Judith, who somehow avoided making eye contact with me. By that time, I already understood how her duty as Genna had mattered to her more than anything. I figured that out during the time we spent reading books together. To her, I was still a potential threat to everyone, and the powers within should be neutralized. I r

Lila's POV I understood why Dominic and the rest were so against me going through the test to see if I was one of the royal witches but my mind had been made up. I felt bad for my birth mother, and I also felt bad that I might have to be labeled as a bad person all my life, just because I am a witch. “Lila, I know you are feeling overwhelmed at the moment, so your emotions might be all over the place, but I want to be rational and take your time to think about it.” Jonathan tried to reason with me. I stood up from where I was, not looking at anyone in particular. “I believe I have the right to decide on a matter like this based on my choice and what I want.” I protested solemnly. “Lila, it’s not as easy as you think.” Judith raised her protest. “What if you end up endangering everyone?” She asked, and as always, she proved again that what mattered was others, not me. “You should think care….”“Let her do it, if that’s what she wants,” Dominic said in a cold tone, his hands fold

Morgana's POV The misdirection I created was perfect. After meeting the witch I misdirected him to, he must have been occupied with trying to get her to speak, so he must have totally forgotten about me and the things happening in Shadowfangs. At least that was what I had thought. “I can see your plan worked out perfectly this time. It’s been almost five days and we haven’t heard from Dominic. He must have totally forgotten about you.” Victor said, raising his glass filled with wine for a toast. I gave him a big smile with my luscious lips. Things had been going well between us after his wife’s funeral. Though he was a bit bothered about sending his daughter off to one of Dominc’s schools, thinking he would use her as leverage against him one day. But after noticing that my plan had worked out, he asked her to enroll in Dominic’s school, so that she could go if she wanted to. I wished things would stay calm like that until I got my hands on Lila. She was the only thing I wanted
