Chapter Twenty-Two: Hidden Pain Moms Don’t Talk About.

Lila's POV

It happened when I was with my mom; I held onto her hand, blaming myself for not realizing her sickness earlier, even though I was a nurse.

But at one point, I saw her at the time when she went to get diagnosed for the first time. It was like a trance.

Funnily enough, it was where I worked—she must have chosen a day I was off duty at work. Judith saw her when she was coming out of the oncology ward. She approached her, and using her specialty as a nurse, she was able to figure out what she came to do.

I thought I had imagined it, and I hoped it wasn’t true. But the moment Judith touched my arm after I entered the pack house, I saw it again. I saw how she asked if I was at home with my mom during my time off the next day. And it was at that point I knew I didn’t imagine it, I read her memory.

“An elemental can read people’s memory?” Brian asked in shock, closing the gap between us, while Dominic took his time to close the gap. As expected, Dominic was the only one not

Morgana’s POV “I can’t believe she managed to use her powers!” He seethed, his chest falling and rising heavily in anger. “I should have ended Dominic, I should have gotten the girl, but…. argh!” He smashed the closest jar to him, his ears were red due to the anger that was seeping through him. I took a few steps further away from him, I didn’t want to be an object of his anger achievement. “Alpha, be calm. Let’s think of what to do next. We can’t just accept defeat like this.” I said, hoping he’d listen to me this time since the kidnap plan wasn’t my idea. And I was glad it wasn’t. Because he’d have taken out his loss on me. “What do you suggest we do Morgana? And I hope you have a reasonable thing to say because all along, your idea has been failing.” He said, his voice loud and bitter as he pointed an accusing finger at me. “As you were already told, she has witch blood running through her. And that’s what is preventing her powers from working. So, I need to know now, what was

Lila’s POV I’ve been watching her spew bullshit about my identity for almost an hour, but what? A witch? The funniest part was the fact that I knew she wasn’t lying. I had studied her hand and leg movements throughout the time she was speaking and I knew she wasn’t lying. And the worst part was the fact that I couldn’t remember the bullies, using my powers on them or the meeting with her grandmother—I couldn’t remember those moments. I was twelve so I should remember, but why couldn’t I remember? “Lila, you have to be careful of what you say,” Judith said, the shock on her face after I said I wanted to destroy the world was still there. I scoffed at her statement before rising to my feet, “So, you want me to just sit here and pretend like I love this world while you accuse me of being what I’m not?” I demanded. My hands were on my waist and my heart was beating fast. I felt so much like an outcast, life hadn’t been easy for me right from the get-go, and then what? I was now bei

Lila's POV “We can’t do that to her, it’s not her fault to begin with,” Brian said, standing up to defend me. His actions melted my heart. I wanted to thank him for standing up for me at that spot, but I already decided the night before that I would never again show my vulnerability in front of them. “It’s fine Brian. I think it’s a bit inappropriate that I stay here while you discuss what to do about me. So, I will take my leave first—I need to go see my mother.” I said and headed for the door without waiting for their response. I began to think about what my fate would be—if I got killed because of my dark powers, would anyone in the world outside help me investigate my death and reveal this cruel world to the rest of the world? My mother was dying, so telling her about the whole saga was out of it, I felt so lonely and dejected. I thought when I finally grew up and started making money, I’d be able to get rid of that feeling—that thing that has stuck with me ever since I was a

Dominic’s POVAfter Lila expressed her desire to see her mom, I returned to my office, still reeling from the revelations Judith dropped on us that day. I couldn't believe that Lila had witch's blood running through her veins—it changed everything.I found myself wondering how my parents would react once they learned about this. The weight of being Alpha pressed down on me; I needed to stay composed, but it wasn’t easy. “Are you going to just get rid of her?” my wolf questioned, a surprising thing to hear since he already knew the answer. There was no way I could do that. No way.Growing up as the only child of an Alpha and Luna made it difficult for me to express myself. My parents were respected leaders, and while I had a few friends, most of my childhood felt lonely. Because my parents were respected and feared, I also earned respect from older people since childhood. That’s why I connected so deeply with Jonathan; he, too, was an only child and didn’t fit in with the crowd. My p

Dominic’s POVI rushed down to the dungeon where we kept rogues or hardened criminals accompanied by Jonathan, Brian, and Judith. I asked Judith to stay back, but she insisted on going with us so she could confirm whether it was indeed witchcraft or something else. “Alpha!” Everyone greeted me simultaneously as I reached the dungeon. It was the smell of blood that hit my nostrils at first. The fact that we haven’t had many hostages kept in there in the past few months showed that the men I kept there the day before were indeed dead. “Where are they?” I asked the guard in charge of the dungeon. He bowed and pointed his hand towards the fifth cell by my right. I nodded and headed straight for the sight. I was physically prepared for the sight, but I probably wasn’t mentally prepared. Brian covered his nose with his hand immediately when we stepped in. They were ten in number and eight of them were lying lifelessly on the floor. We hadn’t even tortured them for days and they were dea

Lila’s POV I rushed in to see the machines attached to my mother being removed one after the other. I held her hands and tried to call her name, but my mouth failed me—I couldn’t speak. I don't know if it was the pain or the bile forming in my throat due to the tears, but my throat felt clogged, no words could pass through it. I knelt beside her bed with her hand in mine and kept crying. I wished there was a way I could ease her pain before dying, I wished she hadn’t died in such a painful way. “Lila, you have to let go of your mom, she needs to be taken care of,” Brian said as he and Dominic approached me. His hands rested on my shoulders, and I knew he was only trying to console me. “You don’t understand Brian,” I finally managed to say, “I can’t let her go.” I sniffed my nose, “I can’t lose her to death like this.” I cried harder. I staggered before I could finally manage to rise to my feet. I hugged her body and it was so cold, but what made me burst into tears further was th

Alpha Victor’s POVI arranged for a few men to go with me as I visited Blackwood Pack. Alpha Dominic had always proposed several business deals, but I refused because, unlike other packs, I didn’t want my pack to be subjected to his authority. Call it an inferiority complex or anything, but I felt that it was the best way I could protect my pack. A business deal I had recently, fell through and that was because I wasn’t in alliance with the Blackwood, I had to admit that I underestimated Alpha Dominic’s influence. After what happened in my pack twenty-five years ago, I became the Alpha even though I had no Alpha blood. All packs neglected my pack and insisted we joined another pack so we could be under an Alpha, the issue dragged on until Dominic became the Alpha at sixteen. He was the one who eventually requested that my pack be left alone on the condition that I had to marry an Alpha blood so we could produce an Alpha that would eventually lead the pack. So, I married one, and

Victor's POV “What…what do you mean by a witch, Alpha?” I asked. I adjusted my expression so my stuttering wouldn’t appear guilty or whatsoever. “You know we hate witches the most in Shadowfangs, given our history with one of them.” I gave a more convincing statement. “That's right, I forgot it might be a sensitive topic for you.” He lowered his head a bit so I assumed he was sincere about his apology. And I let out a huff of relief since that proved he wasn’t suspecting me, he was only asking just in case I knew. But how did he get to know about Morgana’s prefix? “It’s fine. I haven’t heard of a witch with that name. But if I do come across someone who knows, I’ll let you.” I gave him a fake assurance. And the smile that followed appeared more to be fake than genuine and I was glad he didn’t notice. I left his office and headed straight for the room Jonathan directed me to. I put a call across to Morgana right away, I needed to know what else Alpha Dominic knew. I knew he wa

Victor's POV With her eyes widened in shock, she placed her hands over her mouth to prevent gasps from escaping. She couldn’t believe the sight before her—her husband was making out with the woman he introduced to her as his cousin. I had been committing adultery with Morgana for almost three years now, it was not surprising my wife didn’t feel the pleasure I was getting from it through our mate bond—Morgana prevented it.“Stella….” I called slowly, pulling up my trousers that were now down my thighs. I walked slowly towards her, stretching out my hand to calm her down. She kept shaking her head in disbelief as tears streamed down her face. “I can explain.” I tried to come up with excuses for my infidelity.“I bet you can.” She said, her voice dripping with rage as her chest fell and rose rapidly. “I just want to know who the hell she is, that you had to lie she was your cousin.” She took careful steps towards Morgana, brushing my shoulder as she walked past me. I was afraid sh

Victor's POV I couldn't help but wonder why Dominic didn’t suspect me at all, he must have really underestimated me. And that only made me furious. Call it an inferiority complex, but I do not like being looked down on. Luther informed me that Lila and Dominic kissed at the diner. How could they be in love when I was still struggling to deal with stigmatization? I had concluded that as long as I was still breathing, I wouldn’t watch them fall in love and get mated. I decided to instill a little bit of fear in Dominic, so I sent him a text. “What if he traces the number back to you?” Morgana asked, peeling the orange in her hands with all seriousness. Her fingers were long and painted in black with only the index fingers painted in red. What a weird way to show her personality.“He can’t. The phone belongs to a dead man.” I said, trying not to remember how I killed an innocent farmer, whose body is rotting below a strange tree in his farm. I bet he didn’t have a family that c

Lila's POV Dominic didn’t try to persuade or make me stay. He stared keenly at me for a long while, as if pondering over what I said.“Fine.” My heart skipped when he agreed.I didn't think he would let me have my way so easily.“I can leave?” I asked in surprise, just to be sure.“I didn't say you could leave.” He responded and I was taken aback.“You said fine, what did you mean?” I questioned further, a frown forming on my face.“You're not leaving; I'm leaving," he stated. Jonathan turned swiftly to look at him, his brow raised.“Alpha!” He called out as if trying to bring Dominic back to his senses.“Huh?” My eyes widened in the utmost confusion.Dominic turned to Jonathan and said, “I know what I'm doing.” Then he turned back to me.“I can't let you go out there, knowing fully well that people are waiting to get a hold of you.” He explained calmly, his eyes not leaving mine. I swallowed hard; he was right. The people who kidnapped my mom just to get to me, we still don't know

Dominic's POVMy wolf had been restless ever since I kissed Lila. I didn't expect to act on impulse like that—neither did he.All I knew was that I wanted to remind Juliana of where she stood, but what surprised me most was Lila retracting her kiss. Who does that? She continues to astonish me.Jonathan and I have finally narrowed down our hunt for the witches to three individuals, but records indicated that they were all deceased.Jonathan and I brainstormed, and it became clear that one of them must have faked her own death. We decided to trace their origins and see if they left any clues that could lead us to the truth behind their disappearances. As I checked my wristwatch, I realized Jonathan should have returned by now.Just then, he walked in with a strange expression on his face. It was evident he had some grim news.I leaned back in my seat, prepared for the confirmation of my worst fears.“They're all dead. I have a full report on their births, lives, and deaths.” I crossed m

Lila's POV Should I go to Dominic and ask him if what I heard from Julian is true or should I just sleep in my room and ponder on it by myself? There was warfare happening in my soul. Of course, I ended up pondering about it all night. And I finally concluded it was best I stayed away from Dominic. But I still gave myself the benefit of the doubt—I decided to ask Judith about it. Even if it meant guilt-tripping her until she talked, I planned to do it. Judith stopped working the moment she moved into the pack. She said it wasn’t her dream to be a nurse, but she had to deal with it because she had been protecting me. So, she started taking a course on fashion—it was her dream to become a fashion designer. Good for her, now she has a dream. I, on the other hand, still didn’t have a dream. I chose to become a nurse because it was well-paying, and it was the only stable job that could pay my mother’s debt and also grant me access to legalized loans. I chose nursing to survive. It

Juliana’s POV I couldn’t stop tears from rolling down my face. I knew Dominic had told me on several occasions, even before he met his mate, that I would never be more than a sister to him. We weren’t blood related so why should I be his sister? I remember how I used to follow him around when I was still a pup. It was uncommon for werewolves to joke about their child getting married to another wolf, knowing the wolf probably had a soulmate somewhere. But my dad wouldn’t stop talking about how nice it would be to have Dominic as his son-in-law. So, I grew up believing one day he would be mine. The moment I turned sixteen and I couldn’t smell him as my mate, I knew I’d have to double my effort in loving and trying to win his heart. And given the all-prophecy saga around his soulmate and how he was so not bothered about finding her from the get-go, I felt he was indeed finally going to notice me. But now what? Did he kiss her? How could he do that to me? I was certain he

Lila's POV Thankfully, I wasn’t the only one taken aback this time. How could someone be so shameless? I shook my head as I tried fanning myself with my hand to cool the hotness I felt from within. I turned to Brian, who also had a shocked expression. “Is this one of the rituals she does every year?” I asked out of deep curiosity.“No, this is new.” He replied in a low voice. He proceeded to take a sip from his cocktail, clearing his throat right after as if he had something to say. “Juliana, everyone is watching.” He sounded irritated. That was probably the first time I’d heard Brian sound like that. Juliana didn’t reply, but instead, her eyes were fixed on Dominic who was probably in a daze or unbothered by what just happened. Anyway, I couldn’t figure out what was going through his head at that point. I had to applaud his composure in my head. “She’s so annoying,” Brian muttered under his breath, but it felt like he said it on purpose. I could hear him ‘cause I was sitting c

Lila's POV “You are crazy Judith!” I said, throwing a pillow at her. What a ridiculous suggestion. I stood up and headed for the door. I swung it open and pointed outside. “You should take your leave if you have nothing useful to say,” I stated calmly. I needed to get rid of her before she polluted my mind. She kept laughing. She had been laughing after my exclamation; I knew she found it amusing, especially when she caught me blushing, too. She was beginning to get under my skin. “I was only joking. You shouldn’t be standing there.” She patted a spot next to her, and continued, “Come sit and let’s talk.” She raised her hands in the air as if she were surrendering herself. I rolled my eyes at her childishness. How was she different from Brian? But I could swear I’d kick Brian in his groin if he ever tried that shit with me. Instead of taking the spot she offered, I went to sit on the bed instead.“Now be serious,” I warned, my voice steady and stern. She dropped her hands, adju

They were too shocked to say anything. After that intense conversation, I retreated to my room.I wash away the day’s stress in a warm shower before sinking into the comfort of my bed. I lay on my stomach, the fabric of the sheets cool against my skin, hoping the cramping pain in my abdomen would subside soon.I heard a knock on my door, I decided not to answer, thinking whoever was at the door would leave if I didn’t respond. But I was wrong, the person kept knocking.Reluctantly, I peeled myself off the bed and walked over to the door, turning the handle to reveal Judith standing there, her expression a mixture of concern and determination.“Judith?” I asked in a soft voice, the surprise barely contained.
