Anila POV

“Mate?”

My voice came out as nothing more than a whisper. Xaden, this incredible werewolf Alpha, stood in front of me pouring his forest green eyes into me like I was some kind of precious gem.

“I have been waiting a while for this moment,” he said, taking hold of my hand and bringing it to his lips. “What is your name?”

My face immediately warmed from his touch alone.

“Anila Montgomery,” I whispered.

“Anila…” he spoke softly, testing my name on his tongue and I loved the way it sounded coming out of his mouth. Then his eyes narrowed, and he looked at me with recognition. “Montgomery?”

I nodded, not trusting my voice.

His brows furrowed and then he reached into his pocket to grab a folded piece of paper. He unfolded it and scanned it momentarily before meeting my eyes.

“You received a letter this morning inviting you to Lunar Academy. Have you thought about accepting it?”

I nearly choked on my saliva.

I didn’t see any letter besides the acceptance letter for college. Except I didn’t actually see that letter.

As my thoughts started to run wild, Xaden caught my eye.

“Did you not receive it?” He then asked.

I shook my head, my mouth going dry.

Had Claire lied to me?

“How is this possible? I’m just a human girl…” I asked, still shaking my head in disbelief.

“You are not a human,” he told me. “Despite you living in this human town. Who are your parents?”

I thought about it for a moment; my father died when I was 6 years old, and my mother died when I was an infant. I didn’t remember much about either of them, but I knew my father loved me more than anything and wanted the best for me.

“My father was 100% a human,” I told him.

His brows furrowed together.

“Was?”

I broke my eyes from him and stared at the ground.

“He died when I was 6,” I explained.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” he said, and from the hint of sadness in his voice, I knew he meant that. “And your mother?”

I was quiet for a moment; I didn’t want to bring the mood down like this, but I also didn’t want to lie to him. I stared at the ground sheepishly.

“She died when I was an infant. I don’t know anything about her,” I admitted.

He placed his fingers under my chin, lifting my head so my eyes would meet his.

There was something in his eyes that I was unfamiliar with because I had never seen it in the eyes of anyone who had spoken to me before. But I knew what this look was.

It was understanding.

“The only way you could be my mate is if you were a werewolf too,” he explained.“A strong one at that for them to accept you into the academy automatically. Your mother must have been special.”

I shook my head, a bitter laugh escaping my lips which seemed to have surprised him because his brow arched.

“I have lived my whole life feeling lesser. There’s no way I’m a werewolf.”

I hadn’t meant to say that, but as soon as the words left my lips, I pressed my mouth shut and felt heat rising into my cheeks.

His brows furrowed together.

“Lesser? Who would make you feel lesser?”

I opened my mouth to answer him because I wanted him to know everything about me and not lie to him. But then the thought of Claire finding out that I was speaking ill of her invaded my mind, silencing my words.

Realizing I wasn’t going to say anything more, he took hold of my hands again. His thumb caressed my knuckles gently and sent a wave of tingles through my entire body. It was a strange reaction for my body to have; I just met this man and he had already captured my heart.

Could I truly be his mate?

“When do you turn 19?” He surprised me by asking.

“In a little over a month,” I told him.

“When you turn 19, that is when you’ll get your wolf and shift for the first time,” He explained. “We don't have much time left. Leave with me tonight.”

“Leave where?” I asked in a whisper.

“To the Lunar Academy,” he answered, pulling away from me.

He handed me another piece of paper I hadn’t realized he was holding, and my eyes widened when I read the first line.

Congratulations, you have been invited to attend the Lunar Academy in Stardust Valley.

I continued to read the invitation, holding my breath.

“Is this real?” I whispered, still in disbelief over the situation.

“There’s a private plane that is leaving tonight at midnight,” he explained, taking a step away from me. “I will come to get you and we will leave together.”

I stared at him as he continued backing away from me.

About a million questions were running through my head but the only thing I could think to ask was, “Do you need my address?”

He smiled and his smile was radiant.

“I’ll just follow your scent, little mate,” he said and then he winked at me, sending my heart into turmoil.

I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off him and when he turned and went back to the small group he was there with, I couldn’t will my legs to move. I knew I had to get this letter back to Claire and tell her that I was leaving tonight.

I was going to the Lunar Academy.

This letter in my hands was my ticket to freedom.

I was finally able to pull my eyes away from Xaden who was now busy speaking to others. I rushed in the direction of my home. Excitement filled my body, and it took everything I had not to jump and cheer.

When I stepped into the house, Claire was sitting on the couch, flipping through the TV. A surge of anger and betrayal rushed through me. I knew she was awful, but to hide this acceptance letter from me?

“Did you know?” I found myself asking as I stared at her from the doorway.

She turned and pressed her lips together in a thin line.

“Why aren’t you at work?’ She asked, narrowing her eyes at me.

I held up the acceptance letter.

“I was accepted to Lunar Academy. Did you know about it?”

Her eyes grew round as she quickly stood to her feet and rushed toward me. She ripped the paper out of my hands, nearly cutting my flesh in the process.

Without a single word, she ripped the paper in half, making me wince. I was brought back to this earlier when she ripped the acceptance into pieces.

“It was the same letter you ripped up this morning… wasn’t it?” I asked, realization dawning on me.

She let out a bitter laugh.

“If you think you are leaving here, you are mistaken. You are never going anywhere,” she seethed, a fire burning in her eyes and making me shudder.

My heart was shattered by her words.

I shook my head, taking a step toward the door.

“I’m leaving and I’m not coming back,” I said through my teeth.

I went to turn, but soon she was grabbing my arm with so much force I whimpered.

“Think again.”

Gina was rushing down the stairs and when she saw me, her eyes grew large and round. “What the—” She began to ask. “Help me get her to her room,” Claire growled, grabbing onto my other arm and making it impossible for me to move. Gina nodded and rushed toward me, grabbing a hold of my feet, and causing me to become airborne. I screamed loudly for them to release me. I screamed for help. I screamed for Xaden. I screamed until my throat had gone raw. But it was no use. Nobody could hear me. I was all alone and as Claire said, I was never going to leave. I was never going to be free. I was a true prisoner. Anila POV “It will wear off within the hour,” Xaden said, a smile in his voice as he pulled me along with him and toward the door. “We are leaving now, and you aren’t going to stop us.” I could tell Claire was struggling against this magical hold; her face was growing red as she attempted to move. “Release me!!!” She whaled. Xaden only ignored her though. I gave my stepmother one last look knowing that this was probably the last time I was going to see her. I was finally free. I didn’t say anything to her though; there were no words to say. I turned back to Xaden who was pulling me out the front door, shutting the door behind us, and separating me from the life I used to know. There was a car waiting in front of the house and when we approached the car, the driver got out and opened the back door for us. “Take us to the private plane,” Xaden ordered, helping me into the backseat. “Yes, sir,” the driver said just as Xaden slid into the backseat beside me and shut the

Anila POV As soon as we left the plane, a car was waiting for us. The first thing I noticed about this new place was the warm air. The second thing I noticed was that it was so dark due to it being late at night, however, the big moon and the bright stars lit up our pathway as we walked toward the car. Butterflies assaulted my stomach as I slid into the backseat of the car; Xaden was close behind me, closing the car door once we were secured inside. The driver started to pull away without a single instruction from Xaden. I leaned my head against Xaden’s shoulder, inviting him to hold me. It didn’t take him long to get the hint and soon, I was wrapped in his warm arms once again. Within 5 minutes, we were arriving at the school and my mouth dropped open at the sight of it. It was like being transported into a whole different world. It had to be the biggest university I had ever seen. The stone archway, through the buildings, led to what looked like a long cobblestone drivew

Anila POV I looked down at the wand in my hands, my face reddening. “I… uh…” I tried to say, but he didn’t let me finish before he reached his hand out. “Let me have it.” The wand wiggled from my hands, and I released it, allowing it to fly to Damien. He studied the wand with a curious frown. Xaden stepped in front of me and blocked my view of the others. The air around us pulsed when Xaden said, “She isn’t your mate. She’s mine.” “The hell she is,” Zach growled, stepping toward us. How was it possible to have more than one mate? Especially one of them being a bear? In all my reading, I had never heard of such a thing, and from their faces, I could tell this wasn’t normal. Harley looked confused but said nothing as he stared at me, then at Xaden, and then at Zach. Zach’s face morphed into a snout, and his ocean-blue eyes began to turn yellow with a fiery ember burning within them. The form grew large as clothes started to rip from the fur and muscle burst forth. A

Anila POV Heat rushed to my cheeks. “Do you normally talk about these things so openly?” I asked. “In front of everybody.” Before he could respond, Harley’s voice stopped him. “Look, I don’t want any part of whatever is going on,” he said, keeping his eyes fixed on the ground. He ran his hand across the back of his neck, and I saw that his face was flushed. “Xaden is my best friend and he’s an Alpha. I don’t want to compete for something I don’t fully understand. It’s all very confusing.” Harley seemed to be the rational one of the group. He was trying not to make eye contact with me, but it was a losing battle because once in a while, his honey-colored eyes would catch my wandering gaze and he’d hold it. “Thank you, friend.” Xaden’s response was clipped, his eyes softened as he looked at Harley. The Werebear shifted uncomfortably, but he nodded in head in response to Xaden. Zach, however, was acrimonious. “This is bullshit. I’m not backing down. Just because you met he

Anila POV The air in that room changed quickly; from harsh bickering to paralyzed tension in seconds. Zach’s hand moved up to my neck and rested on my jaw. “I’ll do it before you ever have the chance.” He repeated his threat, and it caused me to stiffen beneath his touch, despite the warm vibrations running along my skin. He placed his lips on my neck, giving it a small kiss. Goosebumps attacked my skin from the sensation, and I found myself closing my eyes and leaning into the touch. He opened his mouth slightly and I felt his teeth grazing my flesh and a bolt of electricity ran down my spine, settling between my legs. I wanted to moan as he applied just a little bit of pressure, but I kept the sound in my mouth. Harley shifted towards me, face knotted with angst, but when his honey-colored eyes fell on Xaden, he froze. Xaden kept his face still, not revealing any emotions. But I could feel through our bond that he was horrifically anxious and deadly furious. He raised

Anila POV Professor Howl’s brows knitted together as he stared at the fog that accumulated from the crystal ball. I could tell something was wrong, but my nerves prevented me from speaking. I looked up at Xaden’s whose eyes were fixed on the quartz and his jaw tensed. The white fog swirling within the crystal ball never cleared. The room was so thick with tension, that I could cut it with a knife. I felt my nerves fray as I struggled to keep my calm. The blankness of the crystal ball put me on edge, and from the look on Xaden’s face, he was on edge as well. Professor Howl clicked his tongue, releasing the ball and allowing it to clear, before taking a deep breath and touching it again. The same exact thing happened. Fog so thick you couldn’t see a damn thing. The professor made a curious hum as he shook his head, looking at an equally perplexed Principal Rapport. It was as if they had an entire conversation with just a glance of the eyes. Great, as if I didn’t stand out e

How could I be a spy if literally knew nothing other than what I had read in books and seen on TV? “She isn’t! I know she isn’t!” Professor Howl’s eyes narrowed, drawing a conceding sigh from Xaden. “She lived in a small town. She was treated like a prisoner at home. I literally had to break her out of her house to bring her here.” My eyes landed on Xaden’s deep forest green pleading gaze as he pulled me tighter to his chest as if he were afraid I would disappear. My chest tightened even more, and it felt like my lungs were on the verge of bursting. “That is enough,” Principal Rapport said, holding up his hand. “Professor, release her.” With a humph, the w

I held my breath as I watched him approach me, his hands raised to show that he wasn’t carrying anything. He was completely shirtless, and my mouth dropped at the sight of his body. He had tattoos across his chest and along his shoulders that looked as if they went down his back as well. I knew right away that the tattoos were of dragons, or maybe one really big dragon with little dragons inside of it.Regardless, I found myself drawn to them.He also had a long scar that went across his chest and down his torso, but that didn’t make him any less hot. In fact, it made him look more manly.
