Elena’s POV
The glittering hall was a testament to the Host's wealth and influence. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light across a sea of well-dressed elites, their laughter and chatter filling the air. I stood with my arm linked to Adrian’s, my designer dress and flawless makeup doing little to hide the turmoil I was feeling inside.
“Try not to embarrass me,” Adrian muttered, his lips barely moving as he smiled at a passing elite.
I gritted my teeth, resisting the urge to snap back. The humiliation of my new reality was bad enough without adding a public scene.
Adrian had insisted I accompany him tonight, not out of affection, but to maintain appearances. The Hawthorne family was negotiating a major partnership with Everhart Enterprises, the host of the luxurious dinner event, and Adrian was desperate to prove himself capable of closing the deal.
“Stay right here and don’t do anything stupid. I’ll be right back,” Adrian said before walking away.
I glanced around the room, my eyes scanning for a quiet corner where I could retreat. But then, a familiar voice cut through the room, interrupting my thoughts.
“Elena?”
I froze, my breath catching in my throat. Slowly, I turned toward the voice, and my heart slammed against my ribs.
There he was. Lucas Everhart.
He looked even more striking than I remembered—taller, broader, his tailored suit accentuating his commanding presence. His piercing blue eyes locked onto mine, filled with a mixture of shock and something deeper... hurt.
“Lucas...” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Before Lucas could continue speaking, I felt Adrian’s grip on my arm, tightened as he followed my gaze. His expression shifted, from a flicker of annoyance to a forced smile.
“Ah, Mr. Everhart,” Adrian said smoothly, extending a hand. “ I'm Adrian Hawthorne. It’s an honor to finally meet you.”
Lucas shook Adrian’s hand briefly, his eyes never leaving mine. “Adrian, is it? And... Elena?”
Adrian’s smile faltered. “You know my wife?”
“Wife?” Lucas’s voice dropped, his shock evident. He turned back to me. “I didn’t realize...”
“How would you? After what happened?” I said, my voice strained. I could feel Adrian’s gaze boring into mine, his irritation barely concealed.
“I'm sorry... it's been so long,” Lucas said softly, his eyes searching mine. “We should catch up.”
Adrian let out a sharp laugh, breaking the tension. “Don’t mind my wife’s tone. Elena’s been a bit busy lately. Marriage and all.”
His condescension made me flinch, but I forced a tight smile. “There’s nothing to talk about, Lucas. Not anymore. It’s nice to see you.”
Lucas nodded, though his expression remained guarded. “Likewise.”
Sensing the tension, Adrian quickly changed the subject. “I believe we have some business to discuss, Mr. Everhart. Perhaps we can set up a meeting?”
“Perhaps,” Lucas replied coolly. “But first, I’d like a word with your wife. If you don’t mind.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened, but he plastered on a fake smile. “Of course. I’ll be at the bar.”
As Adrian walked away, Lucas stepped closer. His voice was low and steady. “What’s going on, Elena? Why are you with him?”
I looked away, my throat tightening. “It’s… complicated.”
“Complicated doesn’t explain why you’re married to someone like Adrian Hawthorne,” Lucas said, his gaze softening.
“Lucas, please,” I whispered, my eyes darting around the room. “I can’t talk about this here. And should we even be talking about this? You suddenly left, and the only thing you’re curious about is my marriage? Who are you now? You’re so different from the Lucas I knew. What happened?”
His hand brushed my arm gently. “Then meet me somewhere else. You said you don't want to talk about this here. Let's meet somewhere else, just the two of us, then you can tell me what happened to you.”
“Lucas—”
“Elena!” Adrian’s voice cut through the air, sharp and accusing. He strode toward us, his face dark with anger. “Sorry, Mr Everhart. Time's up. I need to be with my wife. I'm a family man, so I can't stay long without my wife, right, love?”
I stepped back, my pulse racing. “Of course,” I said quickly, avoiding Lucas’s eyes.
Adrian’s hand gripped my waist possessively as he steered me away. He leaned down, his voice a harsh whisper. “What the hell was that?”
“Nothing,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm building inside me.
“It didn’t look like nothing,” Adrian hissed. “ How are you two related and what were you telling him? Stay away from him. Do you hear me?”
I nodded, my nails digging into my palms. But as Adrian turned to greet another guest, my gaze drifted back to Lucas, who stood across the room, watching me with a mix of concern and determination.

The Next Day
I couldn’t shake the memory of Lucas’s face from the night before. The shock in his eyes, the gentle concern in his voice—it all lingered, tugging at a part of me I’d tried to bury. But as much as Lucas’s sudden reappearance unsettled me, it was Adrian’s reaction to it that made me nervous.
“Explain yourself,” Adrian barked as soon as he approached me.
I didn’t flinch. I already knew he would ask about it, but I pretended not to know. “About what?”
“About why you were so damn cozy with Lucas Everhart last night?” Adrian snarled, his eyes blazing.
“I wasn’t cozy with anyone, Adrian. You asked me to follow you to the dinner and act like a wife. I did just that. What else do you want from me?”
“What were you thinking, talking to him like that?” he demanded, pacing the living room.
“I wasn’t thinking anything,” I said calmly. “We’re old friends. That’s all.”
“Friends?” Adrian scoffed. “Do you think I don’t know what you’re playing at? You think you can charm him into sabotaging me? Do you know what’s at stake here? That man could decide the future of this company. Do you have any idea how damaging it would be if he heard something bad about me? Did you tell him that I’m irresponsible? Did you give him details about this house just to get revenge on the Hawthorne family?”
I frowned. “You think I’d ruin your chances to close a deal on purpose? What do you even take me for? I have no interest in Lucas’s opinion of you or your company, neither can I influence his decision.”
Adrian snapped, “I think you don’t know how to keep your mouth shut, and you’d love to use every means possible to screw me over.”
My chest tightened, but I refused to let him see my hurt. “I didn’t say anything, Adrian. Believe it or not, I don’t enjoy humiliating myself or others.”
“Good,” he said coldly. “Because if I find out that you’re feeding him dirt about me and I lose this deal, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
As Adrian stormed upstairs, I sank onto the couch, my mind racing. Lucas’s sudden reappearance had stirred feelings I thought I’d buried long ago. But Adrian’s threats lingered in my mind, a reminder of the fragile ground I stood on. If Adrian lost the deal, it would be all my fault. I had to stay away from Lucas, by all means.
Elena’s POVI sat in my room, staring at the night sky through the large bay window. Adrian’s threats still rang in my ears, but my thoughts drifted back to Lucas. I hadn’t meant to talk to him. I hadn’t planned to let my guard slip, but I couldn’t help it.Lucas had been my childhood friend first, before anything else. We had developed feelings for each other over time. Lucas was an orphan at the orphanage where my family used to visit, and we had become the closest of friends. We even went to high school together. On prom night, Lucas confessed his feelings for me, and then he disappeared the next day.I was so hurt, so affected, that I wouldn’t leave the house. Every day, it felt like a part of me was missing. I searched for him everywhere, but I couldn’t find him.My phone buzzed on the bedside table, pulling me from my thoughts. I hesitated, then picked it up. It was a message from an unknown number:[Dinner. Tomorrow night at 7. The address is below. Please come. – Lucas.]My he
LUCAS POVI clenched my fist tightly in anger as I watched Elena walk away from me, again!.I had lost her, again!" Boss, the CEO of Greensted would like to have a word with you," my PA suddenly spoke up, Jolting me out of my reverie, reminding me of his presence. I nodded , still distracted by the thought of Elena as I walked towards business like men." Hello, Mr Lucas. It's nice to finally be able to speak to you!" The man, Mr Greensted greeted, his face beaming with excitement. All I did was nod and let out a tight smile. This place was becoming suffocating as a series of questions that required answers run through my head.I signalled to Alex, my PA, and he moved closer to me." Find out everything about her marriage!" I ordered, and he looked confused." Whose marriage boss?" He asked, smiling awkwardly, and I frowned at his stupidity."Find out everything about Elena's marriage, find out if she was forced, and what is holding her back from divorcing that nitwit!" I growled
LUCAS POVIt was the next day, and I was beginning to get impatient. The thought of Elena sleeping in the same house as Adrian irks me, who knows if they sleep on the same bed!All of my staff could feel that I am in a bad mood and they had all been walking on egg shells all day.I tapped my finger on the table anxiously as I await a response from Joel.' What the fuck is taking him so long!' I grumbled impatiently." Yo man, " Joel's annoying voice jolted me out of my thoughts as I glared at him in anger." It took you years to find a simple detail about a woman!" I mocked him and he gasped dramatically. " How could you?" He questioned, still focused in his acting while I ignored him as I tear open the folder. " Name: Elena Bradford Age: 28A smart and beautiful young lady with shoulder-length dark brown hair, striking green eyes, and a petite but elegant frame." I paused my reading unknowingly as I grinned from ear to ear." Hm hm" Joel cleared his throat, distracting me.I rai
ELENA'S POV It was the next day, and I didn't sleep a wink, I had cried the whole night.I stared at myself in the mirror and sighed. My eyes were swollen with dark circles underneath. I didn't wish for a life like this!I had always dreamt of a peaceful life, a beautiful marriage with the man I love and want to spend the rest of my life with.I had dreamt of having three kids, two boys and a girl, the boys would take care of their sister. I had dreamt of leaving them with my parents and going on a long vacation with my husband, enjoying the peaceful vacation full of sex , love, care, attention and every other good stuff I could think of. But then all was thrown at my face when I discovered that I had to get married to Adrian to rescue my family.FLASHBACK ***Screams could be heard as students gather around a table." Truth or dare?" Mathew asked. It was my turn now and I was confused about what to chose, I'm sure bethany is waiting for me to choose truth so she cam ask me quest
LUCAS POV He grunted and retaliated back, but I didn't hold back, and soon enough, we bags throwing punches at each other.Everywhere soon became chaotic as everyone tried separating us, but their efforts were futile.I threw Adrian to the ground and began raining punches on him. He managed to turn the situation around and began hitting me.His PA was finally able to pull him away from me, and I stood up dusting my shirt.Joel held my suit jacket, " What's wrong with you, man?" He questioned, looking furious, but I ignored him." That's right, hide behind your little friend, you coward! You should have heard her screams on our wedding day, " he mocked with a smirk. He was intentionally provoking me, and he was doing it well!I lunged at him, but Joel pulled me back, trying to calm me down." Don't listen to him, bro, he is trying to provoke you," Joel muttered to me, but I wasn't listening to him.Adrian was busy making mocking faces at me, and I got more furious. I pushed Joel awa
ELENA'S POV Who should I sign out for?" Can I sign out for both?" I asked the officer, but he nodded his head in a negative way, and I was left to make a choice. I stood on a spot, confused and unsure of what choice to make.Should I sign out for Lucas or Adrian, I inhaled deeply and raised my head to stare at them.Adrian was staring daggers at me, if only looks could kill, I would have been six feet underneath. He was silently daring me to choose someone else, I knew I would be in so much trouble if I did that." You are wasting my time madam! Who are you signing out for?" The officer spoke up angrily, jolting me out of my thoughts. " I'm sorry, I'd sign out for Adrian Hawthorn please " I finally made a choice, I could see Lucas's disappointed look while Adrian had a smirk of victory on his face.I took the book from the officer and signed out Adrian. I felt pain in my heart so I turned away from them, heading back to the reception. I walked about nervously, chewing on my na
ELENA'S POV The sleek black car came to a smooth stop in front of Hawthorn Corps, the towering building casting a shadow over the bustling street. I gathered my things, taking a deep breath as I prepared to face another day at work. Adrian stepped out of the car first, his cold demeanor a stark contrast to the warm sunlight filtering through the city skyline. As usual, he ignored me, his mind focused on the business empire he had built from the ground up. I couldn't help but feel a surge of resentment towards him, hating the man who had forced me into this contractual marriage.I followed suit, exiting the car and making my way to the entrance of Hawthorn Corps. Despite being married to the CEO, I kept my personal life private. No one at the company knew I was Adrian's wife, and I intended to keep it that way. It was better this way; no one needed to know about the complexities of our arrangement.Stepping into the expansive lobby, I nodded to the security guard and made my way
ELENA'S POVI felt my hand make contact with Karen's cheek, the sharp sound of the slap echoing through the tense air. A stunned silence followed as Karen stared at me, her hand pressed to her reddened skin.It didn't take long for her minions to jump to her defense. "How dare you slap Karen?" one demanded, their voice filled with outrage. "You think you can get away with anything just because you're someone's mistresse?"Another chimed in, their words dripping with malice. "Yeah, you should be ashamed of yourself. Don't you have any respect for Mr Hawthorn's fiancée?"Their accusations felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over my head, freezing me in shock. The world seemed to slow down around me, their words repeating in my mind over and over again. 'Adrian's fiancée?'The irony of the situation was not lost on me. Here they were, accusing me of being a mistress, completely unaware that I was, in fact, Adrian's wife. Even if it was a contracted marriage, it still
LUCAS' POVBreakfast had never been my thing, at least until Elena was around as she also wasn't also one. Early in our friendship, or so she probably thought, we easily clicked because of our similarities. We could both be focused when we wanted to, had dreams bigger than the world put together and weren't vulnerable with anyone other than ourselves. Perhaps it was why our separation killed me everytime. Even though it was only metres apart. ***Flashback ***My heart continued to pound as we drove through the gates of the big mansion, I'd now come to know as the Everhart Mansion. I face palmed the windows of the car taking in every sight, trying hard not to recall the scenes of the horror movies I'd watched a lot. Rolling my eyes to the strange woman quietly sitting beside me, I couldn't help but start to believe I was stupid. What if she was wrong? What if she was a damn good liar who had only deceived me to get me here? I softly squeezed the gun I'd stolen from the stud
ELENA'S POV The night no longer went as bad as I expected mostly because of the comforting company of Dave as I opted to address him and the tons of compliments I got on my new look. Being a busy night as always, Dave and I didn't get to talk much as I was the only one taking care of everyone's orders but more importantly, our conversation as brief as it lasted was enough to lift my mood from its previous state. At some point when it was past midnight, there was no sight of him anymore like he'd chosen to retire early for the night which I envied now the luxury no longer existed - only a mere wish. And by the close of the night, I headed home feeling a lot lighter in my spirits and just when I was a few metres away from the familiar doorstep, the door slowly opened, revealing no one else but…Was that not Eloise's father? What was he doing out of prison already? And in the house! Oh my goodness! Eloise, please be alive. Please stay alive. The old bastard snuck a peek to his left
LUCAS' POV “Lucas, the clients were really pissed when you didn't show up yesterday and I'm really scared they wouldn't want to do business with us anymore”, Henry reported, his voice laced in concern and distress. My eyes remained shut with my back turned against him without moving an inch like I'd heard none of the words he said. Honestly, my plans for my arrival had crashed completely since that night with Elena. I had secluded myself in the safe corners of my room for days now without a single word to anyone. Most times, it felt like the walls were closing in on me and crushing me into pieces completely. I hadn't only lost her but myself as well. Why wouldn't she hear me out? The dead, empty gaze in my eyes as she spat those words angrily. Had my arrival for her in the first place been in vain? Blames on me for making the first mistake, walking out of everything we had without a word. And now, we both weren't the same people anymore as I seemed to have kept hurting her even whe
ELENA'S POV I had barely shut my eyes for less than a minute trying to catch some sleep before preparing for work but the scenes from earlier continued to play in my head, reliving every word we said. Pressing my face down with an extra pillow and groaning into it, the not so old encounter disappeared only to return this time with exaggerated scenes. “Aaarghhh! Damn you Lucas”, I screamed at the walls in front of me, my voice breaking slightly in frustration. Just then, the door to my room creaked open revealing Eloise's round, curious eyes peeking inside before stepping in fully. “You look troubled Elena, what's the matter?”, she asked, her voice filled with concern as she carefully dropped the tray besides me on my bed. I gently rubbed my heavy eyes, sighing tiredly and assuring her it was nothing. “Wait, you look different, I'm not sure if it's —”, she suddenly paused, hanging her mouth wide open as she circled me around the bed checking out my hair. “Elena!”, she shrieked in
ELENA'S POVBeauty sessions had always been my least favorite thing to do even as a kid which was why I'd always carried my hair in one consistent style over the years - a ponytail, imply because it was the eaisest. My shoulder length dark brown hair had always been maintained in the best way I could but, over the years as both a workaholic and lazy person, my hair began to barely be noticed by me. But the makeover today with Betty had not only been therapeutic but even, more entertaining than I thought. Loud music blasted through the tiny walls if her studio apartment while we went through different styles and colours on the internet. My head buzzed in confusion as I was soon stranded in the multitude of choices, scared to pick wrongly and live with the regret like I didn't already have enough to last a lifetime. As if seeing through my confusion, she turned off her phone reassuring me to trust her, which I frankly couldn't bring myself to but laid back anyways. After several hours
LUCAS' POVThe following days were spent taking Sofia out on dates like slipping on a mask Mr. Anderson wished to see. Even though we quarrelled on each date, we still never failed to put on a show when we noticed eyes on us. “She's not talking to you or it's the other way around?”Sofia asked on one of the dates, which turned out to be our last in Greece aas my head had been overwhelmed with the thoughts of Elena in the past few days. My hands clenched my phone tightly on my laps, itching to call her, hear even a whisper of her voice but it now seemed like an impossible task to do. My head began to drown in dozens of questions surrounding Elena, like why she still never replied to my last text on my first night here. Was she too deep in grieving the arrest of Adrian that my existence was now like a faraway thought to her? These were the questions repeatedly playing in my mind like a bad record, turning my nights to sleepless ones. “We're done for the evening”, I simply responded,
LUCAS' POV Things really didn't go as planned here as I ended up being in Greece a week longer but that didn't stop me from executing my plans concerning Adrian. Mr Anderson struck exactly where it hit me the most, probably expecting me to see my foolishness in holding on to something that didn't exist anymore. And he was wrong. The emotions still as clear as daytime coursing through my entire being was mostly frustration at my own incapabilities. Why couldn't I get her to feel the exact same way I did for her? Why couldn't I get her to give me a chance? With me, she didn't need to give so many chances, all I needed was just one. She couldn't deny her awareness of the lengths I'd go for her. She was mine as long as she asked it so why wasn't she asking? “Lucas Everhart, you have successfully deceived me”, Mr Anderson said, the calculating tone betrayed the softness in his voice. A small smirk hid on my lips while I raised a questioning eyebrow choosing to play innocent in my actio
ELENA'S POV The bar was starting to get crowded like it usually did when it was close to night time so I decided to take a five minute break before my shift officially started as I'd been filling in for Betty. “What do you think you're doing?”, the manager asked on seeing me exit the counter. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I stared still at him with my hands holding up my apron in mid air. “Taking a five minute break?”, I answered in a small, exhausted voice. His gaze hardened at me slowly with my hands beginning to cramp from holding my hands up for too long now. “There is no such thing as a five minute break here, Elena. If you wanted one, then there was no need coming here in the first place!!”, he yelled into my face, vibrations travelling down his temple to the bulging vein in his neck. An angry huff escaped his lips afterwards, turning around and disappearing behind a door down the corridor. My lips parted slightly, still frozen to the spot about what just happened. “
ELENA'S POV It was a bright and merry morning with the birds chirping continuously close to my window. I groaned into my pillow wanting to sleep more but I had to pick up two shifts today. The thought of it alone felt like a huge balloon restricting all the airflow in my chest. After Adrian stormed out during our ‘date’ yesterday to deal with Robert I suppose, I finally had the freedom to pursue my real reason for entering into the bustling center of the city to start with. Unfortunately, I was still on a blacklist and according to the few companies that cared to explain, I had been involved in too many scandals and employing me would put a bad name on their company. Hearing the genuine reasons, I couldn't blame them too much but I still had to get a job somehow. Left between a rock and a hard place, I headed into a bar too ashamed to go back home with the same status I left in - unemployed and broke. I had promised Eloise to handle all our affairs as long as she took the time of
