CHAPTER 7
Mazikeen.
“Hey, wanna hit the bar tonight?”
I frowned at the way my heartbeat increased like I was in danger, when all I'd done was send a text to Linda.
I glanced at the screen, waiting for the text bubbles to appear, but then I panicked and set the phone down on my desk and wiped my palms on my skirt as I took a deep breath.
So what if I hadn't texted her all weekend? She certainly didn't mind…
“I hope.”
Also,I was kinda hoping to ask her personally, but today was her day off.
I swallowed as I swiftly grabbed the phone just as it tinged with a message notification.
“Sorry,I can't…I'm babysitting my grandma, she has dementia. But I'm open for next time though, xoxo!”
“Oh,” I breathed out, feeling slightly guilty and just a tiny bit disappointed.
Well I wasn't going to just go home after the day's work,I needed some sort of distraction.
Not just because of Graylin.
Mr. Black had gotten severely cross with me over a small error that I could have definitely avoided if I wasn't so distracted by my own life.
I sighed irritably as I slammed the laptop shut and glanced at my wrist watch.
Ten minutes before closing time,I was leaving.
The photoshoot scheduling could wait till the next day.
With this in mind,I grabbed my bag and stood up, pausing only briefly to arrange and align the files on my desk before exiting the office.
The sun had set over Los Angeles, casting a warm, golden glow over the city's towering skyscrapers and busy streets.
But I wanted it to get darker before I went into the bar,so I decided to treat myself to dinner.
Graylin had control of all my income so what I had was what he gave me. Which meant I couldn't particularly afford to eat at the high end restaurants;but that was okay.
I stood behind a tall, broad shouldered man with messy, curly hair as I waited for the food vendor.
And I craned my head impatiently just as the seller put a clear plastic container filled with cut fruits into a paper bag.
“That'd be seven dollars, sir.” He said, handing the bag over to the man in front of me, who'd dipped a hand into the back pocket of his jeans, pulling out a bill between long, slender fingers.
“Keep the change,” the man replied smoothly, then moved off without looking back.
I caught a whiff of his cologne,a citrusy-sweet smell, and it lingered even after he'd disappeared into the throng of moving people.
“Thank you,” I said with a small smile as I took my wrapped torta and a cup of agua fresca, resisting the urge to glance at my watch just to make sure it wasn't too late to eat everything.
Graylin would be so upset if he saw me eating something like this, “that’s exactly the reason you can't lose weight,” he'd say.
Just this once…I wanted to enjoy something I loved without feeling like I was committing a heinous crime.
I moved towards a corner and leaned against the wall as I tore open the wrapper and delved in, moaning softly as the taste of crusty bread and savory fillings exploded in my mouth.
I was taking a sip of my drink when I caught that citrus-sweet scent again, but before I could act,I almost startled when I saw a tall figure push off the wall, closing the lid of a plastic container as he began a measured saunter towards the bustling street.
I paused, feeling a little bit paranoid before proceeding to finish my food.
I fished inside my purse for a handkerchief and wiped my hands and mouth with it before pushing away from the wall.
It was almost seven PM by the time I walked into the karaoke bar at Wilshire boulevard.
Blinking rapidly as neon lights flashed across my face as I moved towards the crowded main stage and took an empty spot beside an older man whose eyes were glued to his phone screen as he tapped aggressively.
That was when I saw him,the stranger from the food stall— and the street corner.
He was on stage, holding a mic casually as the beat for Ozuna’s Vaina loca started playing.
For some strange reason,my chest tightened as he began to belt out the Spanish lyrics, his voice as smooth as velvet.
I couldn't look away, not even when his hooded eyes found mine and my mouth went dry.
He looked so good, with his hair hanging over his face, his jeans loosely fitted over his long, long legs, and an equally slightly loose white T-shirt hugging his lean, muscled frame.
I clenched my legs together, every muscle in my body alive as I watched him,too aware of him, each light sway of his hips as he sang.
I swallowed again but my mouth was still dry,so I clumsily stood up and stumbled towards the bar for a cold drink.
I felt hot,too hot.
“A cold glass of fresh lemonade please.”
“Coming right up,” the waitress replied, giving me a brief smile before turning to another customer.
I pressed a hand to my temple, then to my racing heart as I waited for my drink.
“I'll have the lemonade too.”
I stilled, feeling the male heat caress my back even without being touched.
A mix of relief and discontent rushed through me when the heat suddenly disappeared, but then he was at my side…the karaoke man with his sweet scent.
I turned, flushing deeply when I found him staring directly, unabashedly at me.
“Were you at the food stand earlier?” He asked and I sucked on my tongue to unfreeze it before nodding,my breath catching at how breathtaking he was.
Black silky curls, falling imperfectly over his perfect face, feline eyes with green depths, and lips that made me want to see him smile, just to know what they'd look like.
“Y…you were at the street corner too,” I muttered, turning forward just as the bargirl placed our drinks on the counter, pausing briefly to flash the strange man a sultry smile before sliding away.
He didn't return it,I wasn't even sure he saw because I could still feel his intense gaze on the side of my face.
“Are you following me?” He asked softly as I brought the cool glass to my lips and I frowned as I took a gulp, swallowed then lowered the glass.
“What?! Why'd I do that?”
. CHAPTER 53JORDAN “Hey man,” Mathew breathed as he stepped out of the elevator, followed closely by a brown skinned beauty, with hair like storm clouds.“Sorry I couldn't make it to the lunch earlier.”“You weren't invited,” I replied, knowing he would've been welcome nonetheless,he was practically my brother and he knew that too. After a brief chuckle,he gestured to the lady with a huge smile. “Baby, this is my bestfriend. Jordan, this is Janae,my girlfriend.”“Nice to meet you,Jordan,” Janae said, smiling. Her white teeth a beautiful contrast with her dark skin. “I've heard so much about you.”“Me too,” I replied, casting Mathew a look, and watching with slight confusion as he silently slapped a palm against his temple.Janae breathed out a laugh, shaking her head. “I don't think that's likely,Matt told me he hadn't told you about me yet, because he wasn't sure I actually wanted him for real.” She laughed another low laugh, and I responded with a smile.“Ohh
CHAPTER 52MAZE “Godammit! Jojo!” I cussed as I almost tripped over the chunky feline as I darted around the kitchen. My heart and nerves pounded in my ears, but I was determined to ignore them. There were more important things to focus on,like making sure the house whole place was in perfect shape for our guests.“Darling…” I heard Jordan call as he entered the kitchen. “You really don't have to do all these…”“Were you able to get the wine stains out of the couch?” I asked without turning. “That was Jo’s fault. She made me tip my glass the other…”The words died in my throat as I felt a pair of strong hands wrap around my waist. Then he pressed a kiss to my neck.“Relax,” Jordan cooed, and my body immediately followed that command.I let him take the towel I was polishing the island with, and toss it away from my reach. Before slowly turning me around to face him.“You…”I swiftly pressed a finger to his lips, silencing him. “Don't you dare lecture me about the
. CHAPTER 51 JORDAN Every full moon ceremony was always in four parts. And I made sure to include Maze in each one, except the last, where I had to test the pack's mindlink by transforming and running all the way to the ventana wilderness, almost five hundred miles away.My mother hated Maze's presence, and whether or not she suspected that the younger woman was pregnant, she didn't show it.Probably because I did the absolute most,to deflect any form of altercation she aimed at Maze by never letting her leave my side. The pack members were kinda uncertain with her presence, but since she was with me…no one directly said anything. Except the pack’s eldest woman.“The lady you're with,” she'd begun, “Is she the one who has stolen the heart of the chief then?”I'd managed a smile as I looked from the blazing full moon,to her incredibly wrinkled face.“I hardly think she stole it,I was more than willing to give it to her.”I looked away, but not before
CHAPTER 50MAZE “There's really no need for this, you know?”Jordan had continuously repeated as we sat for the non-invasive prenatal paternity test, but he'd shown no serious objection to the idea…asides a brief reluctance when our bloods were collected. That was two weeks ago.I was aware, things could go this way or that, but I still wanted to do it. To grasp unto that sliver of possibility that it was his child growing inside of me.So here we are, sitted in the hospital's waiting room as we waited for the results, after fourteen days of tension.“How come it took so long for the baby to announce it's presence?” Jordan suddenly asked, and when I glanced at him,his brows were furrowed in genuine confusion.“You're about three months gone, yes?”I nodded, hiding a smile as I replied,“I believe it's been announcing it's presence, subtly…we just didn't notice.”“Hmm,” he slid his arm around my shoulder, and sighed.“I've noticed you keep referring to the baby as
CHAPTER 49JORDAN “Could you maybe not try to trip me over?” I asked Jojo, her eyes on mine as she kneaded the floor.“I could step on you,you know?” I added, but all I got was a tiny meow before she whirled around and walked away, with her tail high.I let out a sigh as I turned my attention back to prepping the ribeye, glancing at my watch intermittently as I boiled and mashed the potatoes. It was six minutes past five pm,when I finished everything.Maze had left work at exactly two pm,and although I'd offered to go with her, she'd refused…insisting I attend the meeting I'd been procrastinating for weeks.I'd driven to the hospital after, but Collins told me she'd left almost one hour before. Then I'd come home, but it turned out she wasn't at home either.I cut a piece of the steak, while it was still in the pan,and forked it into my mouth, chewing absently even though the piece was delicious. Then I cut a generous slab, cutting them further into pieces before
CHAPTER 48 MAZE “Maze…Maze…”It was the pretty woman from my dreams. Her eyes gleamed unnaturally as she pulled me into a hug, holding me tightly.“You did it,” she whispered, pulling away from the hug. “You found your light…”She held my hands,a bit tighter than needed. “You must keep it now,do everything you can…”“Mother…I'm…” My throat suddenly felt weird, like something was lodged in it. And try as I could to swallow it,it wouldn't go down.My mother grinned, then cupped my cheek, the band of her amethyst ring, cool against my suddenly heated skin.“You must go now…”Again,I tried to speak but instead gagged–I gagged so hard,it pulled into consciousness, just as I felt the cold towel on my temple.“Maze,” Jordan called as he rushed from the bathroom, just as my stomach lurched again.I quickly bolted from the bed as vomit filled my mouth, making it to the toilet just in time to lose my dinner.“You're alright, darling…” Jordan cooed behind me as he held my hair
