ELIZABETH's POV

As soon as Cole answered the phone, I could sense that something was off. He sounded distracted, and it wasn't like him to not acknowledge the food I had sent for him through Evelyn. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but my instincts told me that something was up.

When I asked him about the food, he said that he enjoyed it, but his tone was curt. I couldn't help but feel hurt that he didn't take the time to thank me properly. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot to me.

I pressed him about why he wanted to talk when he got back, but he refused to tell me. I knew that Cole could be secretive at times, but this felt different. I couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something from me.

"Why tell me now then? Why didn't you just tell me when you come?" I asked him.

"I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I don't want you to fall asleep before I come, that's why," he replied.
