Drago

We walked to the sacred grotto that connected our entire world.

I realized that no one was able to see it as Taina and I saw it until I saw Biel frowning, Connor looking on slyly, and Aris and Nadine looking on in surprise. The others didn't seem to be aware of where they were, so it was an excellent idea not to say anything to them.

I didn't trust anyone who wasn't within my bonded group.

I didn't even trust Lion, although I respected the high priest because he had been the mediator of some of my people's and the elves' problems. Since I had decided not to leave Dragis, I had limited myself to many things.

Nadine quickly walked up to me.

“Where are we, and why don't the others seem to be aware of the place?” my mate asked, and Taina looked at her in surprise.

“How is it that she can see this place?” asked the elf. “Only those who have been blessed by the gods can see such a place.”

“I am not blessed by the gods, and you can swear my mates aren't either,” Nadine said with a frow

NadineI had seen a way out of the hostile wasteland; what I did not imagine was that the ghouls I had dreamed of were real. Fear encapsulated me, despite the realization that the ghouls were not as large as in my dreams, and that caused me to be quickly caught. My first genuine reaction was to scream in fear. That upset my mates, who didn't hesitate to approach, but the ghouls began to surround them.Stay calm!My she-wolf Becca's scream made me react, so I tried to summon magic, but I couldn't and realized that the curse that nullified magic in the wasteland must be too strong to nullify the raw power I possessed. I went physical and started kicking the damn spiders, but that wasn't a good option, because the damn things glared at me angrily, and their cobra-shaped heads snapped back to reveal their damn fangs.I didn't have to be smart to assume that the moment the ghoul bit me, some kind of poison would hurt me, so I took a deep breath and reached for the pen Biel had given me. Nadine“What's wrong, Nadine?” asked Aris after approaching me right away.I tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come out; the pain in my head was so limiting that I felt completely useless.“What did you touch?” asked Aris, and I pointed to the water. “I'm trying to get into your mind, but there's something blocking everything.”Aris went over to the water to sniff it, and when he was about to taste it, I pushed him as far away from it as I could. That made him look surprised, so I shook my head emphatically.I didn't want him to get hurt.I was trying to figure out if what I had taken was going to kill me or was just a physical debilitator, so I had to wait.“This water is bewitched,” the vampire said after sniffing it again and cursed between his teeth at seeing me like this. “We can't use this water, and you can't conjure elemental magic. So we must find a water source; that's why I'll tell Connor to do it. You must rest because we don't know what this water does.”I nodded, an

Nadine“What's wrong with Nadine?” asked Biel.He had walked quietly into the cave, and I looked at him sadly. There was no right or concrete way I could express what I was feeling; the dismay of knowing what had happened on the moor had me sick. The event was appalling.“The curse... The ghouls are creatures of the forest, innocent creatures that were cursed,” I said painfully. “How are we going to kill them? How can I kill those creatures that were once holy?”Aris and Biel met each other's eyes in surprise.I wasn't usually this emotional and empathetic; I used to be explosive, but the scenes I had seen had overtaken me. Maybe it was the water that was causing me to feel outrage over creatures that couldn't free themselves.“What did you see?” asked Aris after gently taking me by the chin in a vain attempt to calm me down.Biel denied it, and as he was about to move towards the water, both Aris and I shouted, “No!”“Why can't I drink from this water?” asked Biel with a frown. “It l

NadineThe ghouls began to surround me and Drago in a hurry. They were all spewing a lot of black slime from their mouths and when I realized what the slime was doing to the floor, I knew I was in big trouble. That slime was capable of burning anything, possibly containing some kind of acid and I couldn't let them near Drago in his human form.I will die before they hurt my mate. One of them started spitting loudly, and the others took his example, so the shadows created a dome to surround Drago and me. That upset the ghouls because they started spitting at the same time and with the same force. It was obvious that they were trying to gain access to us, so I felt stressed.Wake Drago up, my she-wolf Becca ordered.I can't; it's not right. Do it, call him through the bond, Becca said.“I hope this works,” I said and placed my hands on Drago's chest.I pulled on the bond that held us, the golden thread that connected us, and then my mate opened his eyes. Drago was disoriented, but he c

NadineThe magical creatures continued to kneel before me, and I did not feel good.I didn't like how that action made me feel, so I told them to get up immediately.“There is no need to kneel,” I told the creatures. “I did this out of a sense of justice; you don't owe me anything; you don't need to do anything else. You already gave so much during the years you were cursed. You would make me happy if you would just live your lives, guard the wasteland, and protect the magic.”What appeared to be the leader of the elves and the leader of the fairies looked at me in surprise.“You do not seek the sacred magic of this place?” asked the leader of the elves, and I denied.“No, I seek this grimoire because it is necessary to complete a mission,” I said calmly. “The moment I can, I will return it to this place.”The fairy leader smiled, and suddenly her wings unfolded, and she flew close to me.That startled me, and Biel took my hand immediately.“I am Alis,” the fairy said. “And that grimo

BielThe moment we landed at the entrance to the magic trail, I knew that betrayal had overtaken us in a terrifying way.I thought that somehow Nadine had been tracked to the Fairy Wasteland, but seeing Taina's torn body a few meters away, hidden in some bushes, and seeing Samir wounded made me understand that someone from our group had been the traitor. We had fallen away from the entrance, so we had a clear view of the panorama, something Aris didn't seem to see, so Drago roared, and Aris turned to see us, so I nodded, and we crept up to Nadine, who seemed to be furious.I didn't want to imagine her reaction when she saw Taina's throat slit; that was when Aris approached me subtly, once we were close.“Is anyone dead?” the vampire asked in a whisper, and I nodded, “I smell blood very strongly, but I know Samir is fine, wounded, but unconscious.”“It's the elf,” I replied in a whisper. “Someone killed her.”Aris looked at me in surprise, then Drago roared again, and I knew he had sur

Part III. The siege of the shadowsNadineI was terrified to see the amount of blood that Biel was coughing up, but when I saw him fade away, terror gnawed at me. What he had just experienced with Drago did not compare to seeing death stalking the captain of the guard; it was a thousand times worse. We landed near the northern mountain range, right on the spot where I had first shifted.“This place is too cold for Biel!” I said quickly, and Drago placed him on the ground, then Aris and Connor carried him while Drago turned dragon.“Wait here; I'll come get you,” Connor said, and Lion denied."I apologize, but due to the captain's injuries, I—"“This isn't about the temple or the Equilibrium Order,” Aris said annoyed. “This is about saving Biel's life.”“Don't take him to shelter,” Samir said earnestly. “The captain doesn't have that much time; he needs medical attention immediately and for Nadine to activate the link to him; otherwise, he's going to die.”Hearing Samir drove me crazy,

NadineI watched as the shadows enveloped my mates and pushed them away from me because I was turning into darkness. My body was ceasing to exist, my mind had turned to butter and Alister's eerie laughter was the backdrop to my madness.I took a deep breath and then Aris shook me, which made me react.“What did you see to make you so upset?” the vampire asked and I started to deny; however, Drago squeezed my hand calmly to give me comfort.“It was bad or you weren't crying; tears of joy are easy to identify,” the dragon said and his words shook me.I was going to respond, but Rose came in with a large tray of food.“I hope you eat, Nadine; my grandson and these fools have been clawing at the walls on the verge of a nervous breakdown that I don't want to deal with,” Rose said. “Inna had to calm them down after beating the crap out of them, so please eat as much as you can and pull yourself together.”I looked at Aris and Drago, surprised to learn that surprising fact.“They fought with

ArisI was upset that the anarchists attacked us.I knew very well that my sister and Alister were behind it all; however, I was annoyed that my sister did not introduce herself to me. Alister didn't have to be very smart to intuit why I was close to Nadine. If they had access to the temple, as I suspected, they knew who we were—Nadine's mates. The fact that they hadn't confronted us directly spoke volumes about what Aria was thinking. My sister was cold, she was calculating, and she was the brains behind much of the anarchist machine. If she and her mate didn't confront us directly, it was because Aria knew the power we had as a bonded group and was sizing us up.The worst was when I felt a trace of her in the minds of the wizards.I had a lot of rage, and it drove them away from my mate.“Accinge fulgura, et percutite Aria (Invoke lightning and strike Aria),” I whispered in the old tongue. Then I heard Aria laugh, as if she had heard my words, and I didn't realize what I was doing u

DragoI was like a madman on the surface while all my linked group was inside the sea. I could not stay calm without an answer from Nadine, or I would wipe out this island. It was her voice, after hours of waiting, that calmed me down; however, when most of the group destined to complete the mission went down to rescue her and didn't come up as quickly as I thought they would, I despaired again.“They're fine,” Rex said. “You have to trust that.”“Nadine isn't saying anything, and I feel what she feels, and I don't like the anguish I'm feeling,” I said in desperation.“It's because of your own desperation,” Samir said. “You're magnifying what you're feeling, so you need to relax if you don't want Nadine to feel your fear. Don't you think she's not in enough trouble already?”Whether I liked to admit it or not, Samir was right, and it was that which made me soar through the air so I could feel useful looking down from above. Whatever was going on had to be related to the divine object

NadineBiel's automatic response was to freeze the sea serpent. After that, Biel applied pressure on the snake with air magic, and the monster exploded into large pieces that fell on us. That caused the sea monsters around us to shoot bolts of power from their tridents, and Aris sent an explosive slingshot of fire that sent them flying away.Lion started drawing some runes to slow them down.“Why don't they just leave Nadine alone like in Fairy Wasteland?” asked Connor as he created a tunnel of ice using his water power. “The fairies and goblins recognized her as the person capable of manipulating the grimoire.”“Possibly because the curse on the locket must be different,” said Lion. The sea monsters came closer again, so I had the shadows blind them until we could escape through the air bubble.“What do you mean the curse is different? What I think is that they are soldiers from old Crete,” Aris said. “They are described as in the stories; it is certain that they are simply trying to

Nadine“Let the guys know what happened,” asked Aris. “I'm surprised Connor isn't bugging you at every turn.”I closed my eyes and tried to talk to Connor and Drago, but it was impossible; I felt like something had sealed my mind.“I can't talk to them,” I told Aris fearfully. “I feel a mental block.”Aris tried to do something, but couldn't do it, and then his eyes turned red.“What's wrong?”“I can't read your mind. There is a telepathy canceling seal,” Aris said with a frown. “What you don't understand is how the mental connection between mates was blocked. It's probably something doing interference with our brain capacity.”That scared the hell out of me, so scared that I didn't feel it when I stepped out of my body and appeared in front of Biel. He looked at me in awe.“What's wrong, Nadine?” asked Biel.Ale and Samir returned with coconuts in their hands, and when they saw me, they dropped the coconuts.“Astral projection,” Ale whispered. “You can astral project.”I felt confuse

NadineI coughed as I came out of the water.Aris hadn't let go of my hand for anything in the world; that was a blessing because I felt like I was going to drown. And so bad was my discomfort that I couldn't help but throw up everything in my stomach.“You've swallowed a lot of salt water,” Aris said as he lifted my hair so I wouldn't mess it up with vomit. “We need to get situated so we can find a way back to the others.”“We've fallen into a bloody abyss,” I said with annoyance after wiping my mouth. “If we take a good look at this shitty place and the height we fell from, it's possible the others will find us.”The fear of that reality scared me too much.“You can't be fatalistic, Nadine,” Aris said firmly with a frown.“I'm a realist,” I said with annoyance. “This is partly your fault for agreeing to travel with that captain who didn't hesitate to take off when things got ugly.”Aris jerked back as if I had struck him with my words.“I did the best I could to finish the mission b

NadineIt was cold, cold enough for Drago and Biel to put on furs.Connor and I scowled at each other before laughing at our biological advantage, while Aris just slurped the blood he had jealously guarded in the ship's hold. I still didn't really understand how his feeding worked, but it wasn't to my total delight to see him consume human blood.“Don't look at it like that,” Connor whispered in my ear. “It's a natural thing... He's not eating it out of a vein, though.”I looked down at my mate with a frown.“I'd rather remain ignorant as to how Aris' feeding works,” I told Connor, and Aris smiled.“I can explain; it will be exciting to tell you who would be my main source of food for life once I accept reality,” the vampire said before getting up and taking the rest of the blood to the storeroom.I frowned, not understanding the implication.Biel sneered at me, and Connor looked at me with some pity, but it was Drago, bless him, who had the will to put me out of my misery.“Vampires

NadineTraveling on a ship was not in my plans.I knew what it was like to be inside a ship long enough to fear the sea. My mother had moved me from one continent to another as we abruptly moved places as a way to avoid anarchists. It had been a difficult experience, but my mother transformed it into a kind of adventure.I couldn't believe that I was about to continue my own maritime adventure.I wiped away my tears, and Aris hugged me, placing his arm around my shoulders.“What made you sentimental?” the vampire asked, and I sighed.“I spent a lot of time on boats when I was little,” I admitted confidently. “Those weren't very good times because I threw up more than I'd like to admit, but my mother treated everything like an adventure... And now the situation is real in a way I never thought it would be.”“Life is a compendium of surprise, Nadine,” Aris said and gave me a kiss on the head. “I think you're going to be fine. If you're experienced, you'll possibly know where you stand.”

NadineThe day of Ophelia's death had finally arrived.Everyone in the Eclipse Pack was serious and waiting for the retinue that would bring Ophelia to Connor to carry out her final sentence. The pack council was silent at all times, which said a lot about the customs of the place. It was Aris who explained to me what would happen and the protocol that would unfold.“Because of the great damage Ophelia caused to the pack, all pack members are to report to the main square to pay honors to the Alpha's family and remember the memory of the late Alpha, Connor's father,” Aris said patiently. “After that brief symbolic ceremony, they remember what Ophelia's crimes have been and await her arrival. A retinue from the Lunarius council is to bring her to the square and hand her over to the pack honor guard, which is led by Inna. Then the people are going to loathe her; they will do it with force and violence... It's a barbaric tradition, but it's something that has been effective in keeping peo

NadineI went back to bed with the feeling of loss burning my skin.I couldn't help crying, and maybe it was that very thing that made Biel hug me silently, so I went back to sleep inside my dream. What I never imagined was waking up to an icy scream.I opened my eyes in a hurry, and when I focused properly, I saw a woman turning to ashes in front of me. Biel was up with a magic weapon in his hand, serving as a shield before me, but with a puzzled expression in his eyes.My other mates rushed into the room.“What's going on here?” asked Drago, and Aris walked over to the ashes and immediately looked at Biel.“Did you see the thief's face?” asked Aris, and I realized it was someone who had touched the grimoire. That fact gave me chills. “She was a thief, and not only that, she was one of the she-wolves who came to clean up the other night,” Biel said, looking at Connor. “You still have rats within your pack.”That sentence shook me, and I got out of bed in fear.“I dreamed about my mo
