A scuff of noise followed by the sound of scattered pebbles attracted my attention and I tensed, staring back the way we came.

Tristan went still as well, but then he shook his head. “The orcs have vanquished, Andronika. They are not a threat any longer.”

I knew that. Had witnessed it with my own eyes.

My fingers hurt with stiffness, my skin is excruciatingly tight, a continual reminder of the instant my life had changed.“Where is Ivy’s poultice ?” Tristan asked. “You’re to use it every day.”

The prospect of digging it out was tiresome. “I don’t need it.”

“You do.”

“I don’t know where it is.” Glancing up at him, I added, “You’re the one who is injured.”

Don’t lie, given that half of his face was covered in dried blood, his sleeve was saturated in crimson, and I was sure he was sporting many bruises from his encounter with the Orcs Alpha

“You’re right,” he answered. “Not only am I in a great deal of pain, but this cut”—he tapped his face—“was also from a rusty orcs bl

“Andronika, wake up,” I grumbled and pulled my eyelids open, my body rejecting movement as I straightened. “How long was I asleep?” “Only a couple of hours,” Tristan said, rising to his feet. “But we can’t stay any longer. It’s nearly lunchtime and you need to be at the temple for the full moon.”“How can you tell the hour?” I winced as he hauled me to my feet, everything hurting.“Instinct.”He scratched at his eyes, and I noticed the shadows beneath them. “Didn’t you sleep?”“My axe disappears if I fall asleep,” he replied, “and you were cold.”I should’ve felt terrible, but instead, a surge of warmth filled my center at the kindness. “Thank you.”Tristan shrugged. “Be glad you weren’t born in the Northern region. You wouldn’t survive your first winter with how you react to the cold.”I couldn’t argue with it, choosing instead to throw my pack over my shoulders. “Let’s climb.” Neither of us spoke as we continued our journey up the mountain, which unfortunately gave me time to l

Tristan started toward the trees. “Let’s go, Andronika. I can smell food cooking from here.He made it a half dozen paces and then staggered back as though he’d encountered some type of invisible barrier. Rubbing his brow and swearing with anger, Tristan ” reached out and his hand came to a stop midair like it was pressed against clear glass. I spotted the priest grinning, though he smartly smoothed his countenance before Tristan turned around, his voice grave as he repeated, “You must pass through the gates.”Tristan ’s eyes were narrow with frustration, and I felt the same way. We’d climbed through darkness and bloodshed and death, only to be blocked by tradition. “Do you know who I am?” he snapped. The priest gave him a condescending smile, which I thought was very bold even if Tristan earned it. It was hard not to roll my eyes although I understood that Tristan was acting out of desperation, not vanity. “I’m afraid you did not give your name when you introduced your lady

Tristan led me down the trail at a trot until we were practically in sight of the gates, then eased to a moderate stroll.I mimicked him, keeping my head lowered as we neared the waiting troops.Never suspecting that their target may be approaching from this direction, none of them paid us any attention. Neither did they allow a place for us to pass, forcing Tristan and me to weave among them. My heart thundered, my stomach twisting into knots, and I dreaded one of them would notice my rapid breathing. Would know that it was Tristan and me, not a pair of unfortunate priests .But they simply muttered about the cold, half of them seeming to feel this was a fool’s errand and the other half seemed to expect I’d come marching across the bridge, shield ablaze. Not one suspected that I stood right next to them, which meant that after a few meters, we’d reached the gates. An elderly priest with tufts of white hair on his head waited, and I dropped to my knees in front of him, Tristan

Hold the wall,” Ragnall screamed. There was no mistaking the fear in the eyes of Ragnall’s troops, but they held their line. One flung his spear at Tristan , and I panicked, but Tristan knocked the weapon from the air with his axe. Yet more followed the man’s lead, flinging their spears one after another. I yelled, pushing against the half dozen priests stopping me from coming to Tristan ’s help as he fell, his back smacking against the barrier.“No!” I yelled, thinking that he’d been wounded. Certain that I was going to lose him. But instead of collapsing dead, Tristan dragged a fallen shield in front of him. A heartbeat later, two of the attacking soldiers shouted and collapsed, arrows in their backs. What was happening?Dropping low, I saw behind Tristan and through the legs of the swarm of men. Beyond, several warriors gathered on the far side of the bridge, bows in hand. Alpha Orion was at their head.“Loose!” he yelled, as a rain of arrows plummeted onto Ragnall and his

Shouldn’t we wait?” I grumbled as we proceeded into the sea of tents and cookfires, dozens upon dozens of men, women, and a few children milling about them. There had to be hundreds here from locations close and distant. “ Given you appeared ready to murder my father with your bare hands, I thought distance was a prudent choice. Will give you a chance to settle down.” He squeezed my shoulders, then let go, the heat left behind from his hands disappearing too swiftly. I’m hungry. And thirsty —fighting usually makes me need a strong drink.”As if hearing his comments, a man sitting close to a fire screamed, “Tristan !” and then filled a cup from the jug at his feet. He handed it to Tristan after they beat each other enthusiastically on the back, pledging to find each other later, before moving on.“Distance isn’t going to calm me down,” I informed him as he drained his cup. Another man at another fire laughed and refilled it, only for the process to be repeated at the next fire. T

There seemed little point in denying my identity. “Andronika, Derrick’s daughter.” “I’m surprised you remain alive,” he said. “Many seek your death, for they do not wish to see the Southern region with an Alpha king, and even less to swear allegiance to Alpha Orion . Though I see they have all failed to kill you as they swore to do.” Tristan shifted restlessly next to me, and I wondered if he was considering the same thing as I was: whether Alpha Maximus counted himself among those who wished for my death. Weapons might not be allowed within Vanda but that wouldn’t stop his men from ambushing us outside the borders. “A bit of foresight would have told those who sought Andronika’s death that there was another path to be taken,” Tristan answered. “One worth the risks, given the gods have spoken of a future that has not yet come to pass.” The twisted phrasing felt strange in my ears, but the Alpha responded before I could give it more thought. “It’s true, then, the whispers

Alpha Maximus is not our current concern,” Lyra said, shoving Alpha Orion in the opposite direction. “Nor an immediate threat.” The woman with him is Melisande, the child of Thor, he answered. And he’ll have Theodora with him as well, both of them deadly.” I had no notion of who this Theodora might be, but a child of Thor could call lightning, and that was terrifying enough. If Lyra felt the same, she didn’t show it, only said, “Neither can use their magic within Vanda, so they are an obstacle for a later hour. We must do what we came for. All your vows of war will mean nothing if Andronika does not make her sacrifice and the gods turn on her for her failure.” Alpha Orion resisted, his eyes fixed on the door Maximus had exited, but then he growled and extracted a handful of silver coins from his pocket, which he pressed into my hands. Ask the gods for their favor. Ask them yourself was what I wanted to say, but instead, I nodded and stepped toward the statues. The h

Alpha Orion and Lyra led the group through the forest, hundreds of people heading in the same direction. Many men and women wore extravagant masks like my own, frequently accompanied by colorful hides or cloaks of feathers, which made it look like a herd of monsters approaching ritual.Tristan went to my left, his gaze straying over everyone who approached nearby. A woman marched against the flow, her face masked by a mask of raven feathers that blended into her dark hair. Tristan tensed as she approached close and my own heart skittered, seeing threats at every turn. But she only murmured, “What path do you follow?”I blinked, opening my mouth to answer her, but Tristan seized my arm and pushed me forward. “Seems like many have already indulged in mushroom tea.”I turned my eyes to where torches shone, revealing a gathering of hundreds of people standing before a massive flat rock. Drummers hammered the same pattern they had before, low and threatening, and through the tree c

My bed was undulating under me, rising and sinking as though I’d had too much to drink, the sensation sending a rush of nausea through me. “Tristan,” I muttered, attempting to reach out to him. Except I couldn’t move my arms, scratchy rope locking my wrists together. My eyes jerked awake and brightness pierced into them like knives. At first, all I could see was white, but as I furiously blinked, my eyesight cleared to show the hull of a ship, booted legs all around me. Memory entered my head, of Alpha Maximus and his men arriving in the cavern. Of the reality of Tristan’s allegiances being revealed. Of corpses on the ground all around me, dead by my curse. Of Philomela, blowing smoke into my face as she betrayed her real loyalties. “Good to see you’re finally awake, Andronika . Alpha Maximus’words entered my ears, and I turned over, gazing up to meet his light gray stare. Where am I? “On a ship,” he said with a slight smirk, teasing me with the obvious. Then he lift

Good morning, Andronika .Alpha Maximus grinned, tucking a curl of golden brown hair behind his ear.It fills my heart with joy to see you hale and healthy after such a terrifying plunge. I confess, we feared the worst when Melisande knocked you into the water. But I should’ve known better than to distrust Tristan.” To distrust Tristan. His words pierced into my heart, locking me in place even as I heard Tristan emerge out of the cave behind me. Felt him take in the image of Alpha Maximus with his soldiers standing nonchalantly behind him, Tristan’s voice stiff as he said, “Why are you here?” A question I was profoundly worried he already knew the answer to. “We feared you might have been injured, so rather than allowing you to bring her to us, we came in search. Alpha Maximus took a step closer. While I understand your actions, they were too risky by far.You may have both been killed.” A low drone of noise filled my ears and sickness twisted in my gut, ideas rising and fal

  • Bloodbound Destiny    HER DOUBTS

I woke to morning light peeping in through the branches Tristan had used to hide the entrance to the cave, my ears filled with the sounds of trickling water, chirping, and Tristan breathing in my ear, still asleep.A joyful smile bloomed on my face, the purest kind of bliss widening my chest, and if not for the strain on my bladder, I’d have allowed myself to fall back to sleep. Sighing, I carefully lifted the thick arm draped over my belly, the fact that he didn’t so much as twitch telling to the depth of his sleep.Outside, morning had already come and gone, the sun over the horizon and the summer air heated. Nothing stirred except the light breeze in the trees, yet I heard the chatter of squirrels as they yelled at me for interrupting the quiet of the morning. Taking care of my requirements, I crept back into the cave to find Tristan still asleep, eyelashes dark where they rubbed against suntanned skin, his hair a tangled mess.As was mine.Frowning at the tangle that was my braids

I groaned softly as he put a finger inside of me, felt his chest rise as he discovered my moisture, my yearning. The thought began to stray as my blood raced quicker through my veins, his cock firm against my behind as he pleasured me. He’d told me everything I needed to know— that he wanted the future I dreamt of for us, and all that was left was for me to believe that he’d never lie to me.And I did trust him.More than anyone. Everyone else lied and twisted and used me to attain their aims or to protect themselves, leaving me cold and alone, but never Tristan. He was ever and always the rock at my back. My love. My life.Twisting in his arms, I straddled him, my knees pressed against the furs as his hands massaged my thighs. Firelight lighted half his face, the other half shadowy, but all of it so lovely I felt I would weep. “I love you,” I said, bending forward to kiss him. I trust you.And I wanted him.The urge to be filled throbbed deep in my sex. I stroked against him, slick

Every bit of me for all of eternity. I held his neck as he slammed into me again and again, with each stroke the base of him pushing against the region his thumb had abandoned. My claws ripped his skin, my heels pressing into the tight muscle of his arse as I dragged him into me, my climax teetering on the verge.Tristan kissed me, our teeth smashing together with the power of it, his tongue running over mine as he pushed into me, breathing hot and quick. Then his hands grasped my hips, nearly dragging me off the rock as he thrust deep.Release burst over me like a storm. Like a hurricane that would break the earth apart, my body quivered as it bathed me in ecstasy, drawing me back under each time I breached the surface. Never had I felt anything like that, the feeling washing away sight even as it drenched me in color, my ears full with the sound of my name on Tristan’s lips as he climaxed, flowing into me in a deluge hotter than the seas we swam in.He buried his face in my neck, mo

  • Bloodbound Destiny    HIS FOREVER

Tristan murmured my name as I stroked him root to tip, and heat that had nothing to do with the hot springs erupted in my core. The side of my palm caressed my slippery sex as I pumped his length, and I leaned back, thrusting into it even as I felt my climax grow. I want you in me,” I whispered, but Tristan seized hold of my wrists, his voice a snarl as he replied,I think first I must prove my worth, love.In that moment I may have sworn that nothing could flame my desire more than the way he’d shouted love, but then Tristan took me farther into the cavern, putting me down on a slope of rock worn smooth by water running from another chamber above. It was nearly hot enough to burn, running in rivulets of fire over my throat and breasts, between my legs, but I hardly felt it when Tristan split my legs wide, exposing me.A breath kept too long within my lungs, shuddered free as I glanced at him, massive and powerful as a god between my legs, ready for him to plunge into me. And lest he misinterpret my message, I seized hold of my mail and raised it over my head, tossed it aside, the tunic and undershirt I wore beneath fast following, baring my peaked breasts. Tristan snarled, his eyes black as he sank to his knees, grabbing the tip of one of my breasts in his teeth. I gasped as he sucked it deep, teeth nibbling to the point I couldn’t tell if it was pleasure or agony, just that my thighs were sticky with the yearning for more. Not just more of his hands and lips on me, but mine on him. I wanted to taste that taut tattooed skin, to dig my claws into the firm curve of his muscles, to run my palm over his huge cock.So I pushed him back, stepping down into the pool, the heat of the water searing my skin as I backed further. “It’s hot,” I mumbled, reaching down to remove one shoe and then the other, flinging them past Tristan even as I held him in place with my eyes.As I took a step further, the water came to just above my hip bones. I unlaced my trousers,

Your father didn’t visit?” Tristan’s jaw was constricted. “Only when he wished for answers from her. My existence was the source of a great deal of friction between Lyra and him, so he never took me to Mystic Rune pack.”I hesitated, then added, “Did they not suspect you had god’s blood? My mother knew. He swallowed. “She forbade me to speak Thor’s name. One of my first recollections is of mom telling me that to do so would set me on the path to losing people I loved to fire and ash.He shook his head. “She painted these visions in my head of people screaming, people dying, and everything was always burning.”It was hard to hear that. Not only because she’d been correct, but in the attempt to prevent the doom she’d prophesied for him, Sage had filled her child’s brain with horrors that I felt persisted even now.“I was asleep one night,” he said.My mother shook me awake and told me to hide, pushing me under some blankets in a chest. Moments later, I heard a man’s voice. Heard him m

A heartbeat later, we hit.Even with their protection, the impact forced the air from my lungs. And there was nothing to fill them as we soared higher, then ,we were pushed down into the riverbed again, the water trapping us in its ceaseless churn.Spinning us around and around till I didn’t know which way was up.
