Chapter Twenty-Two - Repercussions

Something was wrong, she just knew it. Nell was pacing up and down the nursery, a sleeping Fallon in her arms. She wasn’t worried about the pup, and the absence of Olivia, though annoying and typical, didn’t concern her. Alpha Liam was in danger and it seemed Theo wasn’t either reliable or loyal.

Nursemaid, indeed! Looking back on it now, he must have been having a good laugh at her expense.

Help him.

The plea was only in her mind and she didn’t really expect an answer from the elfkind. But it consoled her to think she had reached out to her kin. A phonecall to Mom wouldn’t have been of any use.

Is that what you want, Arielle?

It was the same deep voice as before. Nell almost dropped her small burden.

“Yes,” she said aloud to the otherwise empty room. “And I don’t know why.”

Feeling foolish, she followed it up with a thought.

Glad we’re communicating again. I’m Robin. Your uncle is so happy about your ability.

So she had another close relative, did she?

I’ve always wanted a brother.

She had dressed modestly for their appointment and was prompt, even though he hadn’t specified a time. In fact, there were still a couple croissants left on the china plate. Liam offered her one but Nell declined politely.“You will have coffee though, won’t you?” he said, knowing she was addicted.“Is that an order, Alpha Liam?”“Well done.” He gave her a slow handclap. “You managed to use both my title and my name so I can’t very well reprimand you for that.”“Glad to hear it,” she mumbled.“What’s that? Did you speak? I couldn’t quite catch it.”At least he hadn’t called her “it”, unlike some of the past bullies who had made her life a misery.“I’m happy to have met with your approval, Alpha,” she stated, avoiding his eyes now.He banged the desk, hard. “Look at me, Nell. You owe me that much.”Her forehead puckered. “I don’t understand.”“So many problems, so much pressure and all of it is down to you.”“Please explain, Alpha.”“I did meet my mate and I rejected her. Satisfied, no

Nell lay, dazed and confused, on the couch, a blanket covering her now shivering body.Liam was on the phone to his Beta.“I’m taking some personal time. For the rest of the day. Spread the word.” He glanced at her, but she turned her face away, gazing at the deeply embedded buttons. “I may even go out.”What did it all mean? she wondered. He rang Henry next, placing Deborah in charge of the nursery. She should have felt ashamed, yet she didn’t, and that probably explained why she wasn’t ready to face the Alpha yet.It meant nothing to him, of course. Hadn’t he confessed to ‘helping’ she-wolves in the past. Moving on to a hybrid elf made no difference to him. What was happening to her? Nell felt like crying and laughing, not to mention hitting something. Her mouth felt too small suddenly, and she reached a finger inside, reassuring herself. No, she hadn’t developed canines yet.If this was an elf thing, why hadn’t Robin warned her?“You’re going to take her away from me, aren’t you?”

“Alpha, excuse me for interrupting, but you must come and hear this.”“Not now, Henry. Go away.”“Sheriff Bostock’s here about a missing person.”“Can’t Jack deal with it?” he growled.“He was the one who asked me to fetch you.”Liam rolled his eyes.“Stay here,” he said to Nell. “No, don’t get dressed. I want you just the way you are when I return. This shouldn’t take long.”Taking the extra precaution of locking the door, he felt like whistling as he made his way downstairs behind Henry. There was a reception room for visitors. Seldom did any of them get to see the inside of his office, thankfully. The grey-haired man did not turn up in Watertight very often and not without good reason. He was standing by the windows, looking out towards the river which had a tendency to freeze up this time of year.“What can I do for you, Sheriff?” he asked, once the perfunctory greetings were out of the way.“I’ll get straight to the point, Alpha. I knew your father, a man who respected the harmon

Closeted in the Alpha’s bedroom later, Nell was astounded when he proposed watching a movie.“Disappointed?”The taunt was more like it, yet she sensed he was going through the motions.“Whyever would you think that?” she replied. It made Liam laugh.“I told you, today is all about you.”“Well, you could have fooled me. Where exactly are my panties?”“Don’t remind me,” he groaned. “If we weren’t on the verge of winter, I might have suggested a picnic.”“Pretending to be a romantic? Well, I’m not fooled.”“Careful, Nell,” he growled. “I’m still the Alpha.”“Do you think there will be any other interruptions?”“Invading my personal time once was bad enough. Twice would be unforgivable.”“Can I have a bath?” she asked.“Avoiding me already?”“Not especially. I just feel – used.”“That wasn’t my intention, Nell.”“I know,” she said. “Liam, I never expected to feel like that. In some ways, it was frightening.”“You’re not a virgin, surely?”She wasn’t sure whether to be offended, or not. “

Liam hadn’t expected Nell’s seductive request to affect him so much. If it had been just another she-wolf saying it, maybe he would have been able to brush it aside. It touched him that she wanted this and was able to express her feelings so readily, given their rocky beginning. He laid her down on the freshly laundered sheets beneath the duvet and stripped away the towel. Though he’d not even made it to bed last night, he hadn’t been anticipating this. Stripping off his pants and losing his boxers, he climbed in beside her and began to kiss her while one hand wandered almost lazily to a breast. She arched up with a gasp. Nell was sensitive in so many different places and he was looking forward to discovering all of them. “You feel so good,” he told her, his mouth leaving hers and seeking out a puckered nipple. “Liam!” she cried, thrashing her head from side to side. Already? Was this the human part of her or, as he was beginning to suspect, something else? “Touch me,” he said.

Nell was in Alpha Liam’s office when he took a call on his mobile which sent him into a funk. She hadn’t been forced to face anyone yet but knew it was only a matter of time. Her sister had brought her a change of clothes and underwear though she hadn’t seen Olivia, only heard the unmistakably flirtatious tone in her voice. She was glad of the wrapper since she spent a lot of time lounging on the couch. No she-wolves were allowed now, unless they came on pack business. In some ways she felt like a pet. His pet elf. “Leave me.” The commanding tone wasn’t a shocker so much as the words themselves. “Now, Liam?” It took only that for him to come to his senses. “I forgot, you can’t, can you? How’s the headache?” “Improving.” She reflected it was a good thing he had an ‘executive’ toilet just off the business room itself, though the feelings of sickness had long since disappeared. Having to dash out into the corridor, past the know-all guard, wouldn’t have been a pleasant experience

It started off conventionally – in typical fashion – at first. Or so Holly confided later when they discussed the day’s events over mulled wine in her bedroom, a place Nell had been banished to without any rhyme or reason. She spared a thought for Liam, who must be feeling something similar to her: displacement. But Nell didn’t want to examine that too closely right then. Did amnesia make a person heartless? she wondered. “That girl’s kooky, to say the least. Did you see the way she was clinging to, well, the other one?” “You mean the true Alpha?” There was no point pussyfooting around it, Simon was back from the dead and throwing his weight around as if he’d never been away. His first words to her had been insulting. Thankfully, Liam was out of earshot. “I’ve never fucked an elf. Tell me, how do you feel about doggy-style? You are the Alpha’s slave, aren’t you? Well, I’m back now, and it’s me you have to please. Remember that, hybrid.” Simon wasn’t as tall as Liam and she coul

Nell heard all the yelling well before Alpha Liam burst into Holly’s bedroom, dragging a red-faced Olivia by the hair.“Guess what she’s been up to?” he snarled.“Liam?”“Not in public,” he said. She tried not to let her indignation show. “I wanted to be certain it was you.”“Is Fallon okay?”Trust Holly. She had a good heart, despite acting a little young for her age.“No thanks to this one. She was drinking vodka straight from the bottle. I am willing to bet she would have put some in Fallon’s formula if it meant an easy life.”“Wasn’t someone meant to stay with her? Not Deborah, she does enough caring as it is.”“Whoever left her unsupervised will face my wrath followed by my fist, not necessarily in that order.”“Liv, what were you thinking? You could do irreparable harm to your unborn child.”“I know. I’m a mess. It’s Henry’s fault. He dumped me.”“Then you should have said something.”“He was the one supervising me. We had a row, and … ”Out of her eye corner, Nell could see Alp

It was her midwifery skills they wanted rather than her life’s blood. Despite herself, Nell was curious.“Will you break the news to Alpha Liam?”The Beta seemed to understand, even though he was still on all fours and lolloped away in the direction of the packhouse.Poor Jack. She didn’t envy him delivering that piece of information. But if this helped to forge a new alliance, who knew were it might lead? That was all to the good. She’d seen for herself the mingling of different species in the colony. Was she being naïve? Only time would tell.It turned out that she was about to bring yet another hybrid into the world. The human female was yet to be turned and that decision was on hold depending on whether or not her offspring lived and thrived. She was part of history. Fancy that.Alpha Liam was mad, of course, telling her she could have been killed.“Not when I’m performing a service,” she countered.“And when your usefulness was at an end?”“Vampires aren’t vindictive, just needy,

He didn’t have long, but you never knew with his kind. Perhaps loving Electra – had he ever known her real name? – had endowed him with more years. In any case Nell couldn’t forget the bond they’d shared. It was only right Sheriff Bostock released him. As a full-blooded werewolf he needed to face pack justice. Technically, that should be Far Hills, where he had been working and since he had wounded Alpha Warren’s daughter. Still, he’d been aiming for Simon and his instincts hadn’t been as far off the mark as his aim on that occasion. When he’d attempted to kill Liam at the mall, in his crazed state he’d assumed he was Simon. If Rae, her father and her mate, the Alpha King, didn’t want to press charges for the first incident, it was down to the Alpha of the Wide River pack to consider if he wanted to wreak a personal revenge on his mate’s father.Liam didn’t. He wasn’t that vindictive an Alpha. He even indicated Martin Field was welcome to see out his days with them, though not in so m

It took two whole days for Nell to heal, no thanks to her she-wolf side. Rose was a shadow of what she should be and Thom was both anxious and restless. He wanted to mount her but Liam managed to calm him down after a frustrating inner dialogue. Why not? She’s too fragile. That’s the point. My mate needs stimulation.Eventually, maybe.No. Now!In the end he went for a cold shower. He was beginning to wish Pamela hadn’t left the pack for pastures new at the same time as the departure of Simon and his cronies. Whether it was just coincidence or not he supposed he would never know, unless she slunk back and resumed her sluttish ways. Not even Nell had felt sorry for her once he explained it was in her nature and she hadn’t been forced to fuck at least half the unmated warriors.Ida came to see him a short while later. Liam was in his office, drowning in paperwork which he was having to read twice.“Any good at mates’ rights?” he asked, pulling a face.“What? Oh no, hardly.”He hadn’t me

Keeping a cool head was usually second nature to him, but this one was personal. He felt closer to Nell than anyone and was hoping to meet her pups soon. Alpha Liam was part of the clan, even if tenuously, though it was hard to accept Simon as one of them. He preferred to think all the elf genes had gone into the younger twin.Water. The thought whizzed into his head and he realised Nell was in a panic. Going into a trance state he travelled over the geographical features in the vicinity and came to the conclusion she meant him to join her at a fall of water. Could he contact the sprite? There was no harm in trying.Afterwards, he set off at a run, his pointed boots gliding slightly above the grass and soil. The scene which met his eyes was a perilous one. Still safely cloaked in a shield of invisibility, he decided not to communicate with his half-sister. It seemed she was shocked enough already.A she-wolf lay prone, unmoving, yet he sensed a rapid heartbeat.“Isn’t it done yet? Why

My nephew is tracking them.Where are you?But there was no further message and he hit the wall in frustration, belatedly realising it wasn’t his own office he was damaging.“Sorry, Alpha King.”“Understandable.”The older man came across and began to inspect a crack in the plaster. Liam was convinced this was a wind-up. He was sure it had been there before.“Stop messing with his head, Alpha,” Rae dared. She was flicking through a fashion magazine yet it was clear to Liam it was only a prop to keep her hands busy. Biting her nails had come and gone, as had fidgeting.Brock growled, though it sounded playful to him. He was glad she’d found her special someone. Whether they were fated mates or not was nothing to do with him.Taking a risk, he shared what he knew. It still seemed incredible to him that he may have elvish blood.“I don’t think she’s dead.”Liam winced at the word he’d used. One

The Alpha King was deeply offended. He kept saying so to his security detail in front of a woozy Liam. At least the bleeding had stopped, thanks to his wolf’s superb healing abilities. Thom was both angry and whiny, distressed because he could no longer talk to Rose. What was that about? Was Nell so far away? Invisible, maybe. No, she wouldn’t do that to Ida.Unless she was in contact with her elvish kin. Rose would take a back seat if that were the case.Rae had insisted on tending to his injuries personally.“This is all my fault,” she said. “I should have overseen the issuing of the invitations. A plus one card went by courier to the Red Moon pack. When I found out I assumed they would decline or that Alpha Leo would attend just to show his face.”“Does Alpha Brock know?”She nodded.“He’s very angry with me for the slip up, though doesn’t blame me for – well, what happened afterwards. Do you?”Liam could hardly say so when she was dabbing at his head wound so carefully.“Maybe thi

They didn’t spot the gatecrashers at first. Most people were being announced; not this pair. Liam’s hackles rose immediately on seeing Jessica, the black-haired stunner he’d denied, and sure enough, Simon wasn’t far behind. They’d chosen the same colour suit, charcoal, he and his twin, which was less of a surprise than the couple’s audacity. How dare they intrude on what was supposed to be Nell’s belated special day? Though he supposed he should cut the she-wolf some slack. Even though there was no longer any mate bond connection, still he felt a tug of sympathy and something else less easy to define. His mate was simply ravishing in a golden ballgown and matching accessories. Holly had been delighted to help her select the right clutch and shoes, though Nell had chosen the dress herself. Off one shoulder, it complemented her new height, though his cousin had reported back she was apt to look through the petite rack. That made him smile. Alpha Brock had warned Nell he would claim

The pups arrived early, a girl and a boy just as her elvish mother had foretold. Nell was stuck for a name for her daughter and then she remembered the no-nonsense she-wolf Liam had met at that ball. Ida seemed to suit the baby, who relaxed whenever she lengthened the two syllables which identified her. Their son was to be known as Cal. She felt close to him, too, just not in the same way. It had been intriguing to discover elves had physically interacted with the pack before and that their blood was in the Alpha’s veins, the ethereal nature of their culture part of his DNA. Simon’s, too. Nothing had been heard from him for months but he lurked at the edge of her consciousness like the threat of the boogeyman which had disturbed her childhood dreams. Olivia was due to stand trial for murder soon. The remains of Rosemary Worthington Field were currently resting on a coroner’s slab while all the relevant forensic investigations were being undertaken. She supposed it would fall to her

He’d had time to think both before and after Rae’s arrival. They’d had a decent heart-to-heart as well. She deserved better than Si, that was for sure. Hearing that his twin was planning to oust him wasn’t a surprise – once, he would have welcomed the notion – but, for Nell’s sake, that couldn’t be allowed to happen.Liam knew she didn’t care for status given her appalling background circumstances. At least it hadn’t been all bad, though Martin Field was never going to be the same again. He was all she had now, him, the pups, the pack and not to forget the elves, though it wouldn’t be practical to live with them.Could he permit his hybrid pup to live elsewhere? Only if certain conditions were fulfilled. He’d want to see her regularly, that was for sure, and not because he didn’t trust Melas and Robin. After all, he was basing this on a prophecy delivered by Nell’s dying elf mother, something he had never thought to question. When Simon came by, in something of a hurry, he didn’t know
