4 | Deadly Blink of an Eye

Who was the werewolf yesterday?

The question kept running through my head. Two days had passed since the incident with the two foreign werewolves on Leo Carillo beach.

Mom and I were lucky because at the crucial moment a savior came. Another werewolf with an equally large body, brown fur with snow-white patches, and dark gray eyes that glinted softly.

I don't remember anything wrong. Those eyes were indeed softly glowing instead of sharp like a typical werewolf. Even more astonishing was that he managed to kill two of our attackers in just one hard chop.

That werewolf was really strong.

Annoyingly, after saving us, the werewolf just ran away. He did help us kill the attackers, but he didn't have to leave the job of cleaning up the mess to me and Mom, did he?

So that night we had to drown two of the werewolf's bodies in the sea. For Mom who was injured and me who was in human mode, carrying two large werewolves was certainly very draining.

"Lei, have you done Professor Thomas' essay?"

I gasped in surprise. Half swearing, I took out my notebook. Damn, I forgot an important assignment from that killer history teacher.

You don't have to know Professor Thomas for long to know that he's a pain in the ass. Doesn't like fuss, always gives quizzes with random participants, and never fails to give assignments that are almost as long as the London Bridge.

Okay, I'm being hyperbolic. But when it comes to Professor Thomas being annoying, it's one hundred percent valid.

"Have you heard the news?" My friend sitting on the bench in front of me turned her head and said in a conspiratorial voice.

"What?" I wasn't too enthusiastic. My mind was only filled with two things.

Rushing through the essay with mediocre progress and getting a D or leaving the class during history class for not doing the assignment and getting an F for sure.

Neither was a good option. I snorted harshly.

"I met a super handsome guy."

My movement to open my notebook stopped instantly. So did my two male friends who flanked me on the right and left desks.

"He's really handsome!" My friend said again with ridiculously adoring eyes.

How handsome is that guy compared to Sol? Hah, the girls in this class need to meet my new neighbor to change their standards of good looks.

"He's tall ...."

"Hey, everyone here is tall." One of my friends protested.

I just grinned. That was true. The entire male student population in this school was tall.

"But you guys aren't as handsome as that guy." The friend in front of me argued.

I didn't want to hear any more of their ramblings. Professor Thomas will be here in ten minutes. Enough time to do the essay. A D is better than an F, right?

I was so concentrated on my work that I didn't notice the sudden silence in the classroom. It was only when one of my friends poked me in the back that I looked up.

And I was stunned.

My mouth must have been very wide and not pretty. My eyes hurt from bulging so wide.

And obviously Sol had caught me red-handed too. His gaze was fixed on me. I really believed that. Not on the girl in front of me and behind me.

Well, right. That's the proof. His smile is already making me misbehave. Gosh, how could he be that charming? Why was God unfair when He created Sol? God should have given him a few flaws so that the girls in this class wouldn't glare at him with admiration.

Wait a minute. It's not just the girls. Even the guys in my class were also in awe of Sol. It must be because of his cool body.

Tall. Muscular. Well-proportioned slender.

And ....

No! No! Why am I being such a flirty girl? My brain must be malfunctioning. I cleared my throat and calmed my racing heart.

"You have a new friend today. He's Sol, a transfer from Alaska." Professor Thomas introduced the handsome boy to the rest of the students.

I got goosebumps. This was the first time I had ever heard of Sol's home state. Alaska, which was a paradise for Dad and I, felt very intimate when I learned that Sol had also lived there.

"The only empty seat is just over there in the corner. Well, you know where you're sitting, right?" Professor Thomas asked.

Sol nodded. She walked slowly. Even his steps were very graceful and endangered the women's hearts. Like a wolf eyeing its prey.

And an uproar ensued.

Sol who was clearly looking at me, suddenly blinked one eye. I felt my eyes widen. On the other hand a loud gasp could be heard as they realized Sol was clearly only looking at me.

Damn, Sol will only add to my list of enemies. After this incident, there must be more girls in school who hate me.

That's right. After finishing Professor Thomas' history class, a group of girls deliberately bumped into me walking in the corridor. I rolled my eyes. The sophistication of today's technology defeated inner communication in the werewolf world.

News spread quickly through the small object in hand. The cell phone delivered the information about Sol blinking one eye to me.

For God's sake, it was just a wink, but why did it have such a severe effect on my social life?

"What a flirt. Haven't you tease your boyfriend enough?"

I sighed heavily. Their eyes needed to be checked.

I wasn't flirting. It was their boyfriends who flirted first. Their English grades must be terrible because they can't tell the difference between flirting and being flirted with.

"None of my business." I lunged coldly.

"Heh, don't go!"

Someone tugged on my shoulder. My steps were held back. The pull was strong enough to make me stagger slightly.

"You should be taught a lesson!"

The shout of one of the girls caught the attention of the people in the corridor. My forehead wrinkled.

I didn't like being the center of attention. I had tried to look as unattractive as possible, but these troublemakers were still targeting me.

"I have another class. Don't get in my way." My voice was very stern and cold.

"That's fine! You've already interrupted our boyfriends and now you want to act like a jerk!"

My patience was wearing thin. "I never bothered your boyfriends. Blame their eyes if they can't stop watching me."

Plak!

My head was thrown to the side. My cheek throbbed. The pain spread with a hot sting where one of the girls had slapped me.

"This is the first warning. Don't ever be a relationship bully."

I was really annoyed. This human mode left me with little to do. Plus Mom and Dad's warning not to draw too much attention to me.

For God's sake. What did my parents want from me anyway?

Because right now I really want to throw these girls out of the window and bite their necks so they can become werewolves like me. At least I wouldn't have to hold back and settle this boyfriend thing with a bloody duel.
